Biya Simbassa took many American track and field fans by surprise on Sunday morning when they awoke to results from the Valencia Marathon and saw that the 31-year-old notched a personal best by nearly four minutes to run 2:06:53. The performance was good for 17th place in the race but moved him to No. 4 on the U.S. all-time list. Only Khalid Khannouchi (2:05:38), Galen Rupp (2:06:07) and Ryan Hall (2:06:17) have run faster. Back in 2022, we paid a visit to Flagstaff, Ariz. for a video featuring Simbassa and also recorded a podcast episode detailing his career path from being born in Ethiopia, moving to the United States in 2007 and then going through the school system. He started running in high school in Minnesota and then continued his development at Iowa Central Community College before transferring to Oklahoma.  After graduating, he was coached by Scott Simmons in Colorado Springs before signing a pro contract with Under Armour to be part of the Dark Sky Distance Project with coach Stephen Haas. In 2023, Simbassa started working with Hall as his coach. The partnership lasted until this summer before Hall decided to step back from coaching. Simbassa worked with Ian Carter (a McKirdy Trained coach, who also was coached by Hall) for the Valencia Marathon build-up. CITIUS MAG spoke with Simbassa on Thursday afternoon to get details on how the performance came about. Minister Open To State Apology For Johnston Family But Pours Cold Water On Statutory Inquiry

Cold water has been poured on the prospect of a statutory inquiry into the death of Shannon Teenager Aoife Johnston at University Hospital Limerick. It follows a special meeting of the Oireachtas Health Committee this week, which confirmed the timeline for HIQA's impending review of Emergency Department capacity in the MidWest cannot be expedited. The bulk of the meeting was dedicated to issues arising at University Hospital Limerick and saw the MidWest HSE Regional Executive Officer, the Chief Nursing Officer and Health Minister all in attendance. Several TDs and Senators levelled criticism at the absence of the former Beaumont Hospital CEO, Ian Carter who has this week been appointed to lead day to day operations at Dooradoyle. Responding to Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway, Minister Stephen Donnelly confirmed the timeline for HIQA's MidWest ED report could not be expedited ahead of next Summer due to the workload involved. But not before tensions flared between the coalition colleagues over both party's respective handling of the health portfolio. The meeting was held just days after the solicitor for the family of Shannon Teenager Aoife Johnston called for a statutory inquiry to be held into the circumstances of her tragic death at University Hospital Limerick in December 2022. The Clarke Report published into her death last month was prohibited from resolving conflicting evidence provided by nurses and doctors on duty relating to the events of her death. Six people are currently facing a disciplinary process in relation to Aoife's death, in what's the largest action of its kind in the HSE's history. Responding to Meelick Fianna Fáil Deputy Cathal Crowe, Minister Donnelly insists the Johnston family will receive a state apology if desired, but says statutory inquiries could interfere with ongoing disciplinary procedures. The Department of Health's Chief Nursing Officer also addressed concerns over safe staffing levels at UHL. It comes amid reports from the INMO that 2,000 nursing and midwifery posts remain unfilled nationwide, amid claims 200 vacancies exist at UHL. Responding to Kilrush Independent Deputy Violet-Anne Wynne, CNO Rachel Kenna says an over-reliance on agency staff at Dooradoyle has led to unsafe situations. Issues relating to the disproportionate cancellations of scheduled care at Ennis General Hospital were also raised with Ennis Hospital seeing more deferrals of day case surgeries than any other facility in the MidWest. Health campaigners have since voiced concern that not only were vital appointments postponed, but that skilled consultants were also left idle, while the county hospital was deployed for it's overflow beds. HSE MidWest REO Sandra Broderick has pledged to investigate the matter.

This week, Ian Carter, naturalist, ornithologist and author, is back on the show with his new book titled Rhythms of Nature. (Previously, Ian was our guest on episode 105.) I really enjoyed his last book so I was eagerly awaiting his next publication. Rhythms of Nature delivers a great, engaging read and, like Ian's previous book, provides food for thought. As usual, you can expect a review on this blog in the coming weeks. For now though, I invite you to listen to my conversation with Ian.The book discusses a wide range of topics related to the natural world and our relationship to it. Which, as you know, aligns almost perfectly with my show's tagline. There are too many interesting subjects in the book to discuss in one episode. Although the book is not dedicated to hot-button topics, I decided to pick a few of the most interesting and currently debated. Namely, land access and the conflict surrounding field sports in the UK.Rhythms of Nature is dedicated to the author's observations and experiences in nature and is a very pleasant read. Keeping a diary can be a useful thing. Especially if the diarist focuses on events and experiences pertaining to their area of expertise. Ian Carter, naturalist, ornithologist and author, has kept his wildlife diary for over three decades. Ian worked for Natural England, a governmental advisory body, for twenty-five years. He has written articles for respected wildlife magazines and has co-authored papers in scientific journals. Ian was also involved with the Red Kite reintroduction programme and other bird reintroductions and wildlife management programs. It was therefore my pleasure to chat with Ian on my podcast about his latest book titled “Human, Nature - A Naturalist's Thoughts on Wildlife and Wild Places” published by Pelagic Publishing. The book is an elaboration on Ian's diary. It discusses his observations and extends them to wider philosophical questions related to our interactions with wildlife. Many of those questions and observations are quite similar to the ones I myself have accumulated over time. So I really enjoyed the opportunity to discuss them with Ian.I would definitely recommend Ian's book to all wildlife enthusiasts. It comprehensively discusses most, if not all, topics related to nature conservation and our relationship with wildlife. A special shoutout to Pelagic Publishing, an independent academic publisher of books on wildlife, science and conservation. Sid Vaughn and Ian Carter sit down with Scott Fauble to chat about 'Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw' The film is still in theatres and has earned more than $440 million in the box office. Synopsis: Ever since hulking lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America's Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless outcast Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative, first faced off in 2015’s Furious 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they’ve tried to take each other down. But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever — and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw’s sister — these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves.

Stick in the Wheel’s music has been described as “precision folk with anger, lust and blood.” The band’s founders Nicola Kearey and Ian Carter take Matthew Bannister for a walk through their East London stomping grounds, starting in a Victorian weaver’s house in Spitalfields, taking in Walthamstow Market and ending up in Epping Forest where they’re joined by fiddle player Ellie Wilson. Along the way they sing songs that reflect the chequered history of the East End of London and it’s more recent past.

The towering Ivorian defender answered your questions from across our social media channels in this week's Getting to Know You! Jordi Gomez joins us on the phone all the way from Cyprus, whilst Joe Garner sits down with Guy Clarke a little closer to home in the team meeting room at the Wigan Athletic Training Centre in Euxton. We also caught up with chief executive Jonathan Jackson to discuss the second year of our charity partnership with the Brick, the work on the DW Stadium pitch during the summer months and his recent visit to see Latics supporter Ian Carter in hospital this week. Jonathan and goalkeeper Christian Walton visited Ian who is making good progress after he took ill during Latics' home fixture against Rotherham United at the start of September. Our best wishes continue to go out to Ian as he begins to make his recovery. Living With Purpose Interviews

Ian Carter starts this interview by saying that he is a simple person, whose life has had an interesting journey. He started as a Teacher, became a Youth Officer, and a Director of Community Economic Development, before spending the last 20 years as CEO of Anglicare WA. Ian talks about how his Anglican faith has been a key factor in taking on this role, and also staying committed to it over the long term. He also reflects on how his commitment to social justice has deepened over the years, and how having passed 60 he has given himself the liberty to shout at the TV and radio when people make unjust statements. Ian will most likely retire in the next few years, and he reflects on how to do this well, and how he might reflect his purpose once he leaves Anglicare WA.
