Janine advises businesses to create now, next, and later plans instead of 12-month plans, and to focus on the known and unspoken problems of their target clients. Other key takeaways include setting up for 2023 by knowing your numbers, surrounding yourself with the right people, and understanding both your target clients better and how your product or service solves these problems."What I see is too many people chasing shiny stuff, too many people following what everyone else is doing. We go into comparisonitis and it fuels self-doubt, but we also go into comparisonitis and spend money where we shouldn't. And I think this ability to have conviction in what you're doing and how you're doing it is vital. "In this episode, we cover the following:1. Getting clear on your business and its offering2. What does it mean to “be brilliant?” How can you manifest brilliance? What does brilliant even mean? The amazing Janine Garner is with us today to help guide us to becoming brilliant and answer these questions. Janine is the best-selling author of It's Who You Know and From Me to We. She also has a new phenomenal book out called Be Brilliant that we'll be focusing on in this episode. Janine is also a business growth expert, keynote speaker, and consultant with a background in the corporate world. Join us as we discuss how building brilliance also builds high performing leaders that create extraordinary results. Show Notes: [2:50] - Janine shifted by accident from the corporate world to being a best-selling author and shares her story on how she started on this route. [4:17] - She didn't feel very fulfilled in her career and was constantly looking for more. She relocated to Australia with nothing and rebuilt her career and network from the ground up. [5:34] - While building her new life in Australia, Janine realized how powerful making connections and networking is. [6:19] - Throughout this experience and after a few years, she still had the feeling of “is this it?” and had lost her motivation. [6:56] - Janine met Abigail Disney, the grand-niece of Walt Disney, and had the opportunity to have lunch with her. Abigail told her, “You don't have to climb Mount Everest. You simply have to choose to be a brick in the wall of change.” [7:56] - Janine shares her story about her “ah-ha” moment when talking about work with her young daughter. [9:30] - She left her six figure income to network and start her own journey. This domino effect led her traveling, speaking, and writing books. [11:12] - How do you define brilliance? Janine defines it as being the very best that you can possibly be. [11:57] - When we can get into the space of accepting who you are and what your potential is, there is amazing growth. [12:20] - How can you build incredible teams and be an incredible leader if you yourself feel like you are in survival mode and not shining brilliantly? [12:49] - Janine started speaking with great leaders to try and find what was missing. She found this consistent thread of self leadership. [13:40] - The essence of Be Brilliant is honing in on that self leadership so you can better lead others. If you can lead yourself without stepping into self doubt, you will be brilliant. [14:55] - The enemy of your brilliance is in you. It's that negative voice in your head that keeps you small. [16:10] - Many people are acquiring stuff and contacts and knowledge, but are still struggling with self doubt. That self doubt keeps you stuck. [18:07] - Janine tells a humorous story about a guest she had on her own podcast that really impacted John. Her guest named her negative inner voice Mildred the orangutan. [20:00] - Being able to distance yourself from that voice in your head really gives you a reality check. [20:32] - Janine created a series of “laws” in Be Brilliant - be you, be ready, be together, be heard. [21:04] - The first law, “be you,” is owning your spotlight. [21:31] - The next law, “be ready” is about harnessing your energy. This all about ensuring that you are functioning at your best for as much time as you possibly can. [22:53] - Law number 3 is understanding that you cannot be your brilliant self without other people who see and support your growth and potential. [23:42] - And law number 4, “be heard,” is about raising your profile, being seen, and influencing the performance of the people around you. "Conversations and Connections to Amplify and Inspire" - Kerryn Powell the Network Catalyst
Kerryn Powell, The Network Catalyst enjoys conversation. She knows through conversations you can amplify your message, inspire others, expand your thinking, share knowledge and experience.Conversations are the way to open doors and opportunities. Conversations build relationships. Here Kerryn speaks with Janine Garner, author of Be Brilliant: How to Lead a Life of Influence (her third book, following the bestselling It's Who You Know.)Be Brilliant explores why we are so exhausted with, well, just being so exhausted! We are sure you can relate, especially given recent world events. What Kerryn loves most about Janine's work is that she is not afraid to throw rocks at arguments and approaches we've been told before. For example, while she no doubt respects Simon Sinek's work around the importance of WHY, she explores how this has made us even more anxious than ever before. Her solution is to first focus on WHO we are, who we want to become, and who we surround ourselves with. She challenges us that we are already perfectly imperfect and brilliant, and she does that by walking us through her 4 laws of brilliance.Originally, Kerryn met Janine networking, and firmly agrees with the power of connections and that is why she was not afraid to stick her hand up and cheer on this book and Janine's work. Being part of this project and Janine's network demonstrates that there is always a way... when you have a supportive network, and anything is possible.Kerryn and Janine live and breathe connection and want to help make a difference.Enjoy the conversation and as Janine writes "Be Brilliant"More details and to purchase the book visit- bebrilliantbook.comTo contact Kerryn Powell, for more conversations to inspire you- visit kerryn-powell.com.auBe Brilliant explores why we are so exhausted with, well, just being so exhausted! When you use the word brilliant to describe someone, I’m wondering what comes to mind? Is it elusive, talent, just plain luck? In this episode we unpack what does it mean to be brilliant. Janine Garner grew up in Yorkshire in the north of England into a traditional farming family. Even from an early age she questioned the world she was in, and sought to explore new horizons. This is not about spraying business cards at soul-crushing events but being strategic and thoughtful about who you need around you. Janine says that “networking still matters, but your network matters more”. The book is a practical guide for the who, what, where and how of finding and maintaining your core group of influence – underpinned by the fact that value goes both ways. BIG IDEA 1 (3:15) - Quality over quantity. This concept is about finding your core four. This isn’t about finding lots of people and having transactional relationships but having your core four people. She named these four as the butt kickers, promoters, teachers and pit crew. Purpose is important as to knowing what roles you need around you. For example, in some points of your life you need more butt kicking than promoting or other times you need more pit crew than teachers. A clear purpose also helps you determine ‘what good looks like’ and what you need from that particular relationship or person. The interesting part is you don’t always have to be explicit with person, sometimes they naturally fall into those roles. However sometimes you will need to ask a person to play a specific role in your life/career. Janine expands these core four roles into 12 specific roles, three in each category. She has a template called the ‘SORT’ (see resources link below) which is used to audit who is in your circle at the moment. This book is also about reciprocity - the mindset of both give and take with your network. BIG IDEA 2 (5:59) - Beware of the shadows! Janine describes four shadow types that you need to be aware of and wary of. They are your burners, underminers, judgers and fighters. You need to avoid having too many (or any!) of these people in your life and spending time with them because they suck all your energy away. As this book is about strategic and intentional networking - thinking who is around you and who you’re spending the most time with - you want to make sure those people have a positive influence on you. BIG IDEA 3 (7:33) - This is an ongoing process. There are different times in your life or career that you will require different support and the value exchange. This might mean you have to change the way you hang out with people, for example going to different types of networking events or mixing with different people. Think about how you can learn from these networking events and experiences. Being an ongoing process you need to constantly think about the why, the who and the how. Who are the people you don’t know and who do you need to add in or change? The important message of this idea is cultivation. There are ten steps mentioned in the book that can help cultivate your network; from making a good first impression, being memorable, being an action taker and following through. Ep 019 - Choose your hero's wisely by Janine Garner
Ep 016 - Reach your Emerald City by Janine Garner
Collaboration and connect expert Janine Garner shares: • Why developing your network is essential for your marketing machine, your intelligence bank, and a board of advisors. • The biggest challenge people have when it comes to networking: not investing in core connections in the right way. • Where to start in developing a network that truly supports you. • The four key people you need in your network to help you become the person you want to be and create the results you want.
Former U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt once said I'm not the smartest fellow in the world but I sure can pick smart colleagues. Building a high impact community of people around you who are smarter or more experienced than you in a variety different areas is one of the largest things you can do to fast track or up the ante on your own influence. Essentially having a speed dial of your own A Team, I know it's certainly been one of the challenges in my own journey. How do you find the right people and then when you found them how do you approach them. How do you not sound like some strange deranged stalker. How do you come across as professional but still be open enough to discuss some of the actual challenges and roadblocks that you're currently facing? How do you get that mix right? Luckily for me obviously and luckily for you my next guest has decoded it all. Janine Garner is the author of the newly launched "It's who you know - how a network of 12 key people can fast track your success". She spent 20 years working across the world in corporate marketing roles with some of the world's largest brands. She then went on to be the founder and CEO of the little black dress group which is one of the most influential women's networking groups in the country. She was listed as one of Australia's most inspiring women by Madison magazine. And if that is not all impressive enough she like me started out in Australia knowing no one as a backpacker so we chat a little bit about that. We went right in to the difference between how we're all connected right now but not really connected We've got more contacts than ever before but less engagement and we're feeling less engaged and less connected than we have done previously. We talk about finding your board, finding your board of people around you who's going to help you get where you want to go. We talking about value exchange, we talk about how do you know when it's time to move on from a certain contact or a certain group of contacts. And how do you make that shift. We also talked about the role of courage. Big one for me. Role of courage and certainty in a reaching out and getting those connections. Is your network working for you? Are they pushing relentlessly to ensure you become the very best you can be? Chances are they are not - but you’re not alone. In this age of social media, where ‘friends’ and ‘connections’ come easily, many of us have made the mistake of valuing quantity over quality. We have drifted off track in our approach to networking. Janine Garner is an expert in developing purposeful relationships and she’s here to help you create your perfect network. She calls it your ‘Core Four’ - your personal board of advisors that will bring out the best in you.
