This week as we kick back and enjoy the Fourth of July holiday vibes here in the US, we are taking a little break from our regular podcast schedule to re-share with you a favorite episode from the archives. From time to time throughout the year, the Wildfire team will be sharing episodes that really resonate with us personally. Today, Monica Haro has selected this episode about suicidal ideation because she believes can be a mental health aspect of a cancer diagnosis that is not talked about often in the breast cancer community. Jen Rozenbaum is a photographer and author who was diagnosed at 41 with Stage IIb hormone-positive lobular breast cancer. In this episode Jen reads her piece “The Search to Feel Alive” from Wildfire Magazine's 2021 “Grief & Acceptance” issue. Jen tackles the hard subject of suicidal ideation, and the difference between being alive and feeling alive. How do you live your life once you are done with breast cancer treatment and declared No Evidence of Disease when the reality is it is an unrecognizable new life littered with the rubble of your pre-diagnosis existence? What if all you want to do is get in bed and never get out? What if you aren't the badass cancer warrior people think you are? How do you cope when well-meaning outsiders say “at least you are alive” and “you should be celebrating” but you feel minimized and isolated from those comments? The breast cancer community is starting to talk more about mental health, anxiety, and depression - but not so much about suicidal ideation. April will talk more with Jen about survivor's guilt, and the turning points to find help. Victoria speaks with Jen Rozenbaum! "Turning Tragedy Into Triumph and Using Photography as a Healing Tool" - Jen candidly shares with humor and compassion about one of her life's greatest struggles- her journey with breast cancer. She tells about the wisdom she has gained, the truth that she has found within and the incredible strength that she possesses and shares with other survivors. I was a stay at home mom in the process of trying to have another baby. After a miscarriage and a subsequent life threatening ectopic pregnancy, I found myself sad, frustrated and very alone. I didn't want to just wallow in my sadness, so I figured I needed a distraction. That is when I picked up a camera for the first time. I remember it clearly. I placed a glass on my coffee table and took a photo. Then I moved a knob and took another photo and so on. Slowly but surely, I was teaching myself photography. In early 2009 I was invited by a photographer friend to assist her on a boudoir shoot. I happily agreed. What a life-changing day that was. To this day I am not sure I can explain why, but I knew in my bones that boudoir was my calling. I immediately started a boudoir photography business out of my bedroom and started feverishly marketing and in my first 2 years of business, I photographed more than 400 women! Spoiler Alert: I also got pregnant with my second child! Through my journey as a boudoir photographer, I have learned so much about women and myself. I learned that we all struggle with problems such as fertility, marriage issues, self-esteem and self-worth, body image issues, etc… Boudoir gave me a platform to start speaking about these topics publically. Out of that, the #ShamelesslyFeminine® movement was born. In 2017, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I knew once again it was time to be public and share my journey. I am still a boudoir photographer, but now I also turn the camera on myself to use art therapy as a way to heal from my cancer and to inspire women and men that are going through tough times in life. Today, I spend my time shooting, teaching, writing, podcasting and working on another movement called Life After Breast Cancer to help women put their lives back together after cancer. I am so grateful my camera has opened up opportunities for me that I never could have imagined existed. I am grateful my camera has been by my side through everything and has brought such amazing people into my life.

Is it easier for you to forgive yourself or forgive others? What makes that so? How can you live life intentionally so you don’t waste a second? Lauren and I dive into forgiveness and dating in this episode, which are very interconnected actually. After Lauren comes back from the retreat she shared about in Episode 48, we dissect what forgiveness looks like, if it’s easier to date when you’re in your 20s or when you’re older, and so much more. Here’s what Lauren learned at the Matthew Hussey Retreat and there are some gems in here friends! The Two Types of Forgiveness The forgiveness of others The forgiveness of self Lauren shares an example that Matthew Hussey used at the retreat that really helped her understand how to forgive yourself: Imagine a relay race. Now imagine that the first runner trips. The fourth runner in that race isn’t wasting any time getting mad at the first runner because she is simply running as fast as she can to make up the time. Matthew said that your life is a relay race and that every day you’re a new runner. There is no point in berating yourself when you’ve got a race to run. Dating + Living with Intention Lauren shares that she will date again because she’s not who she once was. She loved this insight from Matthew: Living with intention may not spark much change in your routines or life. Instead, living with intention may simply look like being aware of what your heart is saying. Dating When You’re Younger (20s) vs. Dating When You’re Older (30s, 40s) Dating is different as you age. Your standards change. The pool from which you can date has changed. You have different life experiences. Remember that you have choices in who you date and whether you date, but even those choices can be overwhelming. As you age, you realize that you’ve made mistakes and that you can be harder on yourself than on others. When you’re in the trenches of stress and life, how can you realistically practice self-care? What are real-life ways to take care of what’s going on inside your heart when you feel super stressed? And what are Lauren and I doing about it? Co-host Lauren Trantham and I talk about what’s going on in our lives, how we’re battling stress and the possibility of a Shamelessly Feminine Retreat in 2020. If you’re stressed out right now, take comfort in knowing that Lauren and I are right there with you so we share what we’re doing in our real lives to combat stress and practice self-care. Three Ways We are Practicing Self-Care: Both of us will attend a retreat. It’s so good to get away, but it’s also super hard. Lauren decided to unplug by taking off all the apps on her phone and turning off her email. When we decide to get away, we wonder what do we do with ourselves when we’re not social. Lauren has attended workshops because she likes to get away from home and learn from an expert. But how do you know when you’re ready to go on a retreat? For Lauren, going on a retreat is just an annual thing. Her family asks each other how they’ll get to the next level and learn something new. Going on a retreat or attending a workshop is just a part of her life. For me, it’s about getting away from my daily life because I want to get real and do the work. 2. We’re not self-medicating. I haven’t been drinking lately to take better care of myself. Without drinking, there is so much more clarity and pain. We can self-medicate with our phones, exercise, shopping. Ask yourself, “What am I doing to self-medicate?” Nobody feels better after self-medicating. Make a journal of ideas to practice self-care and what brings you joy so that list is available in times of high stress so you don’t have to think of ways to practice self-care on the spot. A creative outlet like art, photography, etc. can help you practice self-care. 3. We’re broadening the definition of self-care. Self-care may look like tapping, a.k.a. EFT or Meridian Tapping. It might look like Reiki (energy healing) or Polarity Therapy. And of course, don’t forget to move your body, whether that’s through a work-out or dancing. I’m guessing you have a toxic person (or two!) in your life. How can you recognize toxic people? Why is it so hard to recognize that toxicity? And what does recovery look like? Co-host Lauren Trantham and I dig into what a toxic relationship looks like, why they can be so hard to pinpoint, and how you can recover from that type of abusive relationship. We want you to know that if you’re in an abusive relationship, please seek help because you have the freedom to make choices and get out. Recognizing Toxic People For me, I have one of two reactions to toxic people: (1) they either make my skin crawl immediately OR (2) I understand they’re toxic but believe I can help “fix” them. One way to recognize toxic people is to ask, “How does this person make me feel?” In my life, I don’t want to upset the toxic person so I stuff down my own feelings and don’t take care of myself, all in the name of selflessness. Even when you recognize toxic people, you sometimes can’t separate from them, e.g. a family member. Toxic relationships are complicated. Emotional and verbal abuse comes out like a dripping faucet, but the next thing you know, you have a flood. Humans can adapt to almost anything so we adapt to abuse too. Abuse happens slowly. Two more keys to recognizing toxic people are asking, “Can I identify the drips?” and “Am I able to do something about it?” You can only control your own reactions. Recovering from Toxic People Lauren shares these best practices as she’s recovering from her toxic relationship: Be really clear about how you feel. Take moments to discover how you feel. Analyze if there’s any legitimacy to how you feel. Be really clear on who you are. Surround yourself with those who know and love you. Conclusion: Remember that abuse can be really hard to recognize because it’s made up of little manipulations. Also, know that you can recover. You are free to do what you need to do to get help. Do you find that you like everything to be perfect? That you can’t stand it when you let someone down? Do you have a low tolerance for mistakes? And does forgiving yourself seem impossible? Lauren and I dissect our lives as we talk about what perfectionism is, why we can’t stand making mistakes, and how to forgive ourselves. You’ll also hear about the mistake Lauren made for a charity event, the time I hit a 95-year old man with my car, and an email from a fan declaring his love for me. You won’t want to miss this episode. Letting Go of Perfectionism Recently, Lauren left off her partner’s logo on a graphic promoting a charity event. She felt horrible. Here’s one question to ask yourself when you’re struggling with being perfect: What is the truth in this situation? Making Mistakes Lauren believes that she’s not so much a perfectionist, but someone who doesn’t want to let anyone down. When she does make a mistake, she resolves to be better only to let someone down again. Here are several questions to ask yourself when you’re struggling with being perfect: Where does that thought come from? Do I hold people to the same standards that I hold myself to? What stories am I telling myself? Forgiving Yourself Others may forgive you far more easily than you forgive yourself. Here’s one question to ask yourself when things don’t go as you planned: Can I forgive myself when I make a mistake? Your Next Steps Remember that perfectionism can show up in body image and unrealistic expectations. Read this Psychology Today article, Mothers are Drowning in Stress, to get an idea. Here are two more questions to ask when you’re struggling with perfectionism, making mistakes, and forgiving yourself: Who do I have to be perfect for, i.e. who demands perfection from me? What is real? If you struggle with perfectionism and a low tolerance for mistakes, will you get back with us? Let us know if you struggle in these areas too! What does confidence have to do with reaching your potential? What’s one secret you need to know to live more confidently today? And how does your wardrobe impact how others respond to you? Devoreaux Walton, an author and confidence coach, joins me as we talk about confidence, self-talk, and your wardrobe. While we don’t see eye-to-eye on everything we talk, we still collaborate and connect, and respect the heck out of each other! If your confidence needs a boost and you don’t know where to start, listen to Devoreaux’s wisdom. Devoreaux’s Journey from Feeling Stuck to Living with Confidence In 2014, Devoreaux was frustrated. She felt stuck working at a job she didn’t enjoy. She wanted to be confident and charismatic, but she wasn’t. Then she discovered counseling and therapy then she hired a life coach and audited her closet. Through her experience, she discovered “insider secrets” to become confident in who you are. One insider secret is to be aware of your mindset and to understand the power of self-talk. We all have lots of thoughts throughout the day with the majority being negative. Being self-aware of the thoughts you’re thinking can shift the focus of the negative and toward the positive. But how do you stop the negative self-talk? Focus on gratitude. Ask yourself, “What’s the best-case scenario?” Focus on the good that can happen. What happens when the best-case scenario doesn’t happen? Remember to control what you can control, which is what you do, say, and think. When the outcome doesn’t go your way, think through what went well and what could be improved for next time. Honor yourself for what you did well and then evaluate what could go better the next time. How does your wardrobe impact your confidence? There’s a massive impact between clothing and confidence. How you dress impacts how others view you and how you view yourself. The response you get from people when you wear yoga pants will be a different response than when you wear a suit. After a difficult emotional time, dressing in a way that makes you feel confident and taking good care of yourself will help you feel more empowered. Spending time the night before can make a world of difference in having a successful tomorrow. What if you’re multi-faceted and you’re unsure what image you want to show the world? There are times and places for everything. In general, it’s possible to have a consistent theme with your colors, fabrics and textures no matter what roles you play. So what is Devoreaux’s Style? Her style has evolved because style is all about continuous improvement. We’re all changing and growing. It’s about a journey and enjoying the present moment. Three to four years ago, Devoreaux’s style was more Americana, e.g. J. Crew and Ralph Lauren. Now, she prefers timeless elegance like Talbots, St. John, and Chanel. Her wardrobe has really shrunk. She encourages us to get rid of things that don’t fit, that we haven’t worn in a while, and aren’t respectful to our bodies. Audit your closet and maximize the essentials in your wardrobe. Devoreaux believes that women should always cover their derrieres, bosoms, and mid-sections. I don’t agree with this. But that’s okay! Connect with Devoreaux Walton: Website YouTube Facebook Devoreaux Walton is an author and confidence coach who serves as the CEO and Founder at The Modern Lady, a lifestyle company that educates and empowers women to live their best lives. In this episode of “Surviving to Thriving: Overcoming My Darkest Moment” I talk with author, podcaster and intimate photographer Jen Rozenbaum. After a miscarriage and life-threatening ectopic pregnancy, Jen needed to direct her energy into something creative, so she picked up a camera and taught herself photography. When a client asked for a boudoir photo, Jen really connected with it, and later learned that many women who seek out intimate photos are suffering from infertility or other issues around femininity. These sessions were healing, both for Jen and her clients. And she didn’t know it at the time, but it was all practice for her real darkest moment… a breast cancer diagnosis in 2017. Something she found, ironically, while noticing a shadow on her self-portrait. Going through surgery and chemo wasn’t the darkest part of her journey, however; it was post-treatment. Jen didn’t trust life and mourned the person she was prior to cancer. She wasn’t that person anymore. There was a lot of shame associated with both her fertility struggles and cancer, worried people may think she had done something to deserve it. She now shares those difficulties openly and authentically via her podcast, and through Instagram self-portraits. She also continues connecting with women through intimate photography, helping them be shamelessly feminine. I am excited to bring you a solo episode this week! I plan to bring more of just me and my thoughts as well as continuing to talk with amazing guests. If you have suggestions on what you’d like to hear, please don’t be afraid to email me at Jenrozenbaum@gmail.com! Today, I want to talk about “more butt, less but”. As many of you know, I am a boudoir photographer and what I mean by that statement is that I want to see more butt and fewer excuses that we make to ourselves. “Whatever you’re thinking about in your head, it’s probably not true!” - Jen Rozenbaum I see this so often in my line of work! We are making all kinds of excuses and are afraid to get out of our comfort zones. Now, it can be difficult to do, I know! But, the only time you’ll grow and learn what you’re are capable of is by getting uncomfortable and stepping out from behind those barriers. “See what you’re made of, girl!” - Jen Rozenbaum Where are you making excuses in your life? Are those excuses preventing you from going after what you really want? Tell those voices to shut up! I’m guilty of this mindset as well. For example, I am publishing a book and I really had to step out of my comfort zone in this process. I had moments when I told myself, “I’m not qualified, I don’t have a degree in this”, but the truth is, I have valuable life experience that has to be heard! So, ask yourself, “are those excuses really true?” “Get out there and do something uncomfortable today!” - Jen Rozenbaum Let’s Connect! See all that Jennifer has to offer at Shamelessly Feminine! EPISODE SUMMARY: This past weekend was my daughter’s bat mitzvah and although I didn’t feel stressed about the whole thing, it did take a lot of time off my regular routine. The Saturday before my daughter’s party, I went to a party and had a few drinks. I wasn’t feeling well on the way home and was sent to the emergency room. The doctors took a lot of tests and could not really find a reason for my sickness but I knew that it was because I overworking myself and not listening to what my body needed. Why are we so good at ignoring what our body needs? We continue to push through and break down once our bodies have had enough. It was as if going to the ER was my body yelling at me and telling myself to slow down! So for you, are you listening to what your body needs? Are you giving yourself the self-care that you need? Thank you for tuning in for another episode of The Intuitive Woman Podcast and the series, Trouble To Triumph. I had the pleasure of speaking with Jen Rozenbaum today. I met Jen casually through yoga and attending classes at The Center for Wellness and Integrative Wellness in Roslyn, NY. This past year I was captivated by her story. She was very public about her breast cancer diagnosis, as well as her daily vlogs, her feelings of diagnosis, surgery, reconstruction, side affects, emotions and more. I would watch her, in the good the bad and the ugly moments as she shared her story with the world. As Jen would say sometimes, the "ugly cry". In this conversation, Jen doesn't hold back, and gets pretty vulnerable. She's truly an inspiration to every woman, with or without cancer. Jen also went very public on: www.thewell.northwell.edu There you can find a few stories of Jen's journey. Jen has a podcast in the works: The Shamelessly Feminine Podcast and all her info is below. It’s difficult to be in front of the camera, but the person behind it can make all the difference. Boudoir photography is having a moment as a beautiful expression of femininity. Whether it is to celebrate a wedding, reclaim your body after becoming a mother, or to stand tall and beautiful in the face of recovery, a boudoir photo shoot allows women to see themselves as they really are, uniquely beautiful. One of the frontrunners in the boudoir photography business is Jen Rozenbaum, whose fine art background and compassionate heart have produced a style of boudoir photography that is one part art and one part social movement.
