Formed in 1996 and named for the California-Mexico border town, the indie rock band Calexico is returning to New Zealand once more for three shows this February.  Frontmen Joey Burns and John Convertino originated the band, the shows they're playing a part of their 20th anniversary tour for their original album: ‘Feast of the Wire.'  Joey Burns told Tim Dower that back when they first created the album, they had no idea that it could be an anniversary tour twenty years on.  “We were all so focused on the next project,” he told Dower.   “We don't often take the time to pause and reflect back and celebrate an album.”  Burns said that it feels really good to reflect back on the album, their lives, and their friendships through the lens of this tour.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cofounder of Calexico, Joey Burns and long-time compatriot Sergio Mendoza stopped by for a warm chat about what's going on with this prolific band.  With a unique blend of folk, indie rock, and Americana,  and with great respect to the traditions of Mexico and South America, Calexico has become synonymous with the sound of the desert southwest.  Decades in, they are still blooming with new material.  Their most recent release, recorded in Tucson, AZ at Sergio Mendoza's home studio, continues the tradition, sounding as if it is floating from the windows to the streets of some narrow-walked Mexican town.  We're talking recording, touring and plenty of other savory topics so come on in and give a listen.

We spoke to Joey Burns on the eve of Calexico's recent European shows in Brussels and London. Calexico play bigger venues in Europe than they do on their home turf, despite inventing a sound that conveys that land so evocatively. Indeed, it was music journalist Fred Mills who captured the band's sound so perfectly with just two words: “desert noir”.  What a cool subgenre to have invented. Since most music writers lazily throw in all the various tex mex music flavours in describing Calexico's sound, Joey is happy to clarify:“We are connected more with mariachi and cumbia than say tex mex or tejano or norteño which has a different connection to a different tradition. For the most part we are mariachi, cumbia. I've never felt like I've mastered anything, but I'm lucky enough to play with some of those that have”. Calexico is touring as a septet, with Burns and partner/drummer John Convertino accompanied by Sergio Mendoza, MARIACHI LUZ DE LUNA, upright bass virtuoso Scott Colberg and the brilliant guitar player and singer Brian Lopez. The set combines magical mariachi of the highest possible standard, yet when the band chooses to (as on the thrilling Then You Might See) they jam out extended plays of true sonic power in the style of Radiohead or James. In combining those elements the band's singularity is astonishing. I can usually pinpoint exactly how I discovered a new band of longevity and for Calexico it was a recommendation from the late, erudite Robert Sandall, BBC Radio 3 presenter of Late Junction and one time Head of PR for Virgin Records. He told me I must listen to Feast of Wire three times. He was very specific about it. I remain entirely grateful to Robert. There is nothing quite like a recommendation that sticks. Not only did that one tether me to Calexico for life, but the ‘listen three times' rule is something I have adopted as a tactic in my own recommendations. I implore you, thrice discerning listeners. It is well-known that beautiful things often come in threes. Support the show

Think of this as a remix. Last year, I interviewed New Orleans bounce artist Big Freedia for an episode about his Christmas music including the EP he released last season, Smokin' Santa Christmas. In early January, I interviewed New Orleans' founder of "rap cabaret" Boyfriend about Amy Grant's A Christmas Album. We also talked about her work with Big Freedia--a part of the conversation I saved because the Amy Grant conversation was a full episode on its own. (Boyfriend has also appeared on the show to talk about her love of The Carpenters.) So this week, I've pulled the two interviews together, combining highlights of the Big Freedia interview with Boyfriend's behind the scenes point of view, and I've included a short digression into Boyfriend's first Christmas song, a version of "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. This episode also includes another call-back. When I interviewed Calexico's Joey Burns, we talked about the Spanish language Christmas song, "Mi Burrito Sabanero," which they performed with singer Gabi Moreno on their Seasonal Shift. This week, I go through some of the recorded highlights of the song's history, though they really don't make it any clearer why that song has developed a seasonal following in Miami.  If you have any questions, suggestions, or favorites you want to share, I'm at alex@myspiltmilk.com. Twelve Songs of Christmas

In December, I had more good interviews than I had time for, so I ran episodes that featured excerpts from conversations with a number of artists. One such musician was Joey Burns of Calexico. Calexico released Seasonal Shift in time for last Christmas, and last December I ran the part of our conversation about their version of "Happy Xmas (War is Over)" and the political significance that Calexico's music has taken on.  This week, I'm returning to that conversation, which again ranges wildly from talking about their musical guests, their method, and their musical default settings (which aren't what you might expect.) Unfortunately, it sounds like someone is stacking poker chips throughout the interview. That sound wasn't audible when I talked to Burns, but it showed up on the recording for the first and only time so far. I wish it wasn't there, but since the alternatives were use the recording or don't, I went with it. I didn't find it too distracting; if you do, sorry. I wish it wasn't there either.  This episode also shines a spotlight on an album I consider to be a good but not great Christmas album: The Beach Boys' Christmas Album from 1964. I generally consider Christmas music to be a singles or playlist medium, but The Beach Boys' Christmas Album gets a lot of love. It deserves the praise it gets on the strength of a handful of songs, but the version of "Blue Christmas" illustrates some real problems that The Beach Boys just couldn't overcome.

I'm ending 2020 with a bang on a number of fronts. First, I have four interviews for the nights before Christmas--"folk pianist" George Winston; singer Inara George of The Bird and The Bee; Jamie Hilsden, who performed this holiday season as The Myrrhderers; and Matt Munoz of the East Bakersfield ska band Mento Buru.  The second big news is that there will more in the upcoming months from all of these artists and others I have interviewed this season including Steven Drozd, Grant-Lee Phillips, Joey Burns of Calexico, and Holly Foster-Wells, Peggy Lee's granddaughter. Twelve Songs will take December 30 off but will return January 6, 2021 and will continue year-around at that point. I've always thought that the show was more about musicians and their musical, commercial and personal lives, and that Christmas music was simply a unique lens to help us get that view. I've never thought the show was simply part of the soundtrack to the season. This episode's interviews need little explanation. Inara George's roofers decided the day and hour of our interview was the time that they needed to work over her room, but the hammering is only briefly noticeable.

¡Feliz Navidad! Christmas is approaching and we have a lot of conversations to get to. This week, I spend time with Joey Burns of Calexico, Grant Lee Phillips, and Holly Foster Wells, singer Peggy Lee's granddaughter and the president of Peggy Lee Associates, which oversees her musical legacy.  Calexico released Seasonal Shift in November, and it's true to the band's long-time project as it lives in a place where cultures find ways to coexist. As such, Calexico projects often feel like they have political subtexts, and Burns addresses that.  Grant-Lee Phillips released the four-song Yuletide EP this year, and he talks about what Christmas music taught him about songwriting as a boy. He reflects on the experience of playing Christmas shows with Aimee Mann and being a mall Santa one Christmas season--a first for 12 Songs! He also talks about how his "Winterglow" ended up on Gilmore Girls.   Holly Foster Wells remembers Christmases with Peggy Lee including Christmas parties that inevitably features some of the top singers of the day singing Christmas favorites around the piano. She provides behind the scenes recollections of her decorations and her biggest Christmas hits. We'll have more with Wells on Peggy Lee soon.  This episode also spotlights Christmas Time is Here, a new album from sax player Benny Barksdale Jr. that sounds like home cooking--not quite smooth jazz but close, and the kind of warm sound and easy groove that sounds great at Christmas time.

Let’s say you want to be a musician. The music bug bit you, and you just can’t resist the urge to pick up an instrument, maybe keep a notebook handy at all times to write down ideas and lyrics. You start recording pieces of melodies and sing them to your phone before the ideas evaporate. Maybe it was because you saw that performance where the light bulb went off over your head, or you heard a song in a movie soundtrack that moved you, or you got on stage and felt more alive than anywhere else. However it happened, you are soon wood shedding and finding like minds to play with and then finding an audience to play to. The muse serves up a sweet elixir, and you may be forever under its spell. The Deer, from Austin, Texas, perform in Greer, SC 4-13-19. Photo: John Gillespie Our guests on this podcast are firmly in that camp, but there are also plenty of musicians who have dropped out. Some came back, too. In our first episode on Side Hustles, there were a lot of examples of why music artists would want to quit making music, at least as a primary means of making a living. Making money by making music is harder than ever, it seems, unless you are at the very top of the heap. The pitfalls for professional musicians seem to have no end. But, there is no shortage of people making music, and plenty who stay with it through thick and thin. I hinted at why that’s the case in our first episode, but never spelled it out. If you haven’t deciphered the clues yet, stick around and it will come together by the end of the episode. Along the way, you’ll hear from Dangermuffin, Joey Burns of Calexico, The Deer, Max Brown and Phil Bronstein from The War and Treaty, and Dan Fedoryka from Scythian, along with a lot of their music, too. Thanks for visiting! Please support the music of the artists you enjoy hearing here, and I hope you will spread awareness about this independent project and consider helping by subscribing, rating and commenting on the show where you get your podcasts, and by becoming a patron. Joey Burns is a leader and founding member (with the brilliant drummer, John Convertino) of one of the most exciting, talented, and critically lauded bands on the planet, Calexico. On this edition of the podcast, Joey discusses the band’s Tucson roots, what the environment brings to the music, fostering a spirit of collaboration, speaks very candidly about Calexico’s creative process, and much more. Calexico is currently on tour in support of their new album, The Thread That Keeps Us (easily one of the best albums of the year thus far), and if you have the chance to see them live, don’t hesitate to do so. Also on the show, a brief preview of an upcoming conversation with Philip Haldiman, one of the stars of The Room, which will have a screening at FilmBar on Friday, June 15th at 10 pm. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

My guest this week is the very creative and grooving drummer, John Convertino. Along with Joey Burns, John started Calexico in the mid-90's after a long stint playing and touring with the seminal group, Giant Sand. His work with Howe Gelb in Giant Sand brought him from LA to Tucson, where he's been living for many years, and has helped to develop a creative and nurturing music scene. Calexico has released a series of amazing albums, and John's unique approach to the drums is always a highlight. The group successfully mixes folk, rock, twang, mariachi, and avant-garde music into their sound, and it was great to discuss all of those elements with John, as well as his history playing in his family band, how he met Howe Gelb and started playing in LA, his move to the desert of Tucson, and his experiences recording and working in the studio. Enjoy my conversation with John Convertino!

Calexico is the seminal desert noir band. Their music is a melting pot where traditional Latin and southwestern elements of mariachi, conjunto, cumbia and Tejano styles peacefully and harmoniously coexist with alt-country, indie rock and a trace of jazz. Founded in 1996 by singer Joey Burns and drummer John Convertino at the University of California - Irvine when the pair met while Convertino was playing in the group Giant Sand, Calexico started as a side project and grew to its current six members and an identity all its own. John will join us from his home in Tuscon, Arizona and we'll talk about the process behind recording the soundtrack for Circo - a documentary about a century-old Mexican circus.

An Arizona band led by singer-guitarist Joey Burns and drummer/multi- instrumentalist John Convertino, Calexico has spent a decade and a half as a go-to purveyor of atmospheric, even cinematic desert pop. With the aid of trumpets, pedal-steel guitars and piano, Calexico has become a festival favorite (playing a set at Bonnaroo earlier this summer), recorded high-profile collaborations (including 'In the Reins,' a tremendous album with Iron & Wine), and evolved into a consistent studio force (most recently releasing the well-received 'Carried to Dust'). Here, Calexico performs live at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, R.I.
