In this episode of "Now That's Significant," host John Bird, EVP at Infotools, speaks with Lucy Davison, founder and CEO of Keen as Mustard Marketing, about the launch of the Insight Awareness Index, a new initiative aimed at measuring brand awareness within the market research industry. Davison, drawing upon her extensive experience in B2B marketing, highlights a common issue within the industry: market research companies often struggle to promote themselves effectively, despite excelling at providing marketing advice to their clients.   The Insight Awareness Index aims to address this challenge by providing a benchmark for market research and insights companies to measure their brand awareness and track it year after year. The index will survey industry professionals, asking them to name companies they associate with specific market research needs, such as brand building, customer experience, or innovation, going beyond simply measuring open rates or website traffic. Here are five takeaways from the conversation:  The "Cobbler's Children Have No Shoes" Problem: Market research companies often excel at advising clients on marketing but struggle to apply those same principles to their own brand building. The Importance of Long-Term Brand Salience: B2B purchasing decisions are often driven by brand recall and mental availability, making long-term brand building crucial for market research companies. Moving Beyond Short-Term Metrics: Measuring open rates and website traffic is not enough; market research companies need to focus on metrics that reflect long-term brand awareness and impact. The Power of Events and Thought Leadership: Davison highlights events and thought leadership as particularly effective ways to drive awareness and build relationships in the market research industry. The Insight Awareness Index as a Benchmarking Tool: The index will provide valuable data for companies to track their brand awareness over time, identify effective marketing strategies, and benchmark themselves against competitors.  The first set of results from the Insight Awareness Index is expected to be released in the fourth quarter of 2024, offering valuable insights into the industry's perception of different companies and the effectiveness of their marketing strategies. To learn more about the index, participate in the survey, or access the results, visit insightplatforms.com. *** Infotools Harmoni is a fit-for-purpose market research analysis, visualization, and reporting platform that gives the world's leading brands the tools they need to better understand their consumers, customers, organization, and market. Via Wikipedia: Lincolnshire Posy is a musical composition by Percy Grainger for concert band commissioned in 1937 by the American Bandmasters Association.[1] Considered by John Bird, the author of Grainger's biography, to be his masterpiece, the 16-minute-long work has six movements, each adapted from folk songs that Grainger had collected on a 1905–1906 trip to Lincolnshire, England.[2][3] In a similar fashion to these folk songs, many of the movements are in strophic form. The work debuted with three movements on March 7, 1937 performed by the Milwaukee Symphonic Band, a group composed of members from bands including the Blatz Brewery and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer factory worker bands in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.[4] --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/musicspeaks-podcast/support

USAA recently conducted a poll of Veterans, active duty personnel and the general population. The survey centered on the topic of Veterans Day.  The results were surprising.  John Bird, USAA's Senior Vice President of Military Affairs joins us to share more. Some of the results were disturbing; 28% of the civilian respondents didn't know or were unsure why we recognize Veteran's Day.  Others shed light on generational disparities between Veteran populations. Seventy percent of younger Veterans said they felt uncomfortable hearing “Thank You for Your Service” whereas only 24% of Veterans sixty five and older felt similar. John says that early on his career he also felt uncomfortable until he realized that people were just expressing their appreciation that he volunteered to serve. The survey has inspired a new USAA initiative; the “Go Beyond Thank You” campaign which encourages people to do more than just thank Veterans for their service. John shares examples such as having a deeper conversation with a Veteran, volunteering & contributing to non-profits that support Veterans and helping Veterans make the transition to the civilian workforce. We also discuss the USAA “Face the Fight Foundation” which seeks to address the scourge of Veteran suicide. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among post 9/11 Veterans. Their aspirational goal is to cut the suicide rate in half by 2030. Their website is a great resource for both Veterans and civilians to engage in addressing this important issue. USAA is also donating new exercise equipment centers in American Legion Posts to address the important connection between physical & mental health. John is a 1977 graduate of the Naval Academy. He “double volunteered” to serve in the submarine fleet, retiring at the rank of Vice Admiral. USAA was founded in 1922 by Veterans to serve other Veterans. They offer a variety of services including insurance products and financial services. They employ 37,000 persons across the country and last year donated $47.5 million to military family resilience programs. TAKEAWAY: “The best thing I ever did, short of my wife and kids, was joining the Navy.”

"I never felt sorry for a homeless person in my life. You've got to use that energy trying to sort them out..." Lord John Bird is the founder of The Big Issue — the revolutionary street magazine which turned 30 last year. Lord Bird's story is fascinating. He grew up in one of the roughest slums in London, was homeless at the age five, and found himself in and out of prison several times before the age of 18. (It was here, in fact, that  he first encountered a printing press.) Today, the Big Issue is the world's most distributed street paper — a project that has given millions of homeless people not just a solid income, but also a way back into society — and Bird himself is a hugely respected member of the House of Lords. In a brilliant episode of the podcast, he takes us on a journey from the slums of Notting Hill to the highest chambers in the land — via the tumultuous and sometimes raucous early days of the Big Issue, the new pressures of the pandemic, and an inside view on the political climate of the moment.

Despite less than half of Americans (43%) understanding the true meaning of Memorial Day, and many confusing it with Veterans Day, the majority of Americans (83%) do believe it's important to do something to commemorate Memorial Day. This Memorial Day weekend, USAA is bringing back its virtual Poppy Wall of Honor to give all Americans a unique opportunity to pause and remember the more than 645,000 military service members who've given their lives for our country since World War I. USAA, a financial services provider founded nearly 99 years ago by military members and continues to serve the military community and their families, created the digital Poppy Wall of Honor to offer Americans a chance to honor and remember the fallen. The experience, found at PoppyInMemory.com, offers visitors the opportunity to dedicate a virtual poppy in honor of loved ones that they've lost in service to our country. Additionally, the website includes information about why the poppy has become a symbol of remembrance, the ability to learn about each military conflict and the losses suffered, and several other ways Americans can #HonorThroughAction this year.  This is the second consecutive year that USAA has held the virtual experience which, due to the pandemic, replaced the physical Poppy Wall of Honor that was installed on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. in 2018 and 2019. He lives 7 miles from Cambridge and when visiting he cycles there. His latest Big Issue project is a docked bike share scheme for smaller cities using electric bikes fettled and hired out by unemployed people and others who may be vulnerable and in need of a way of improving their lives. Lord Bird has had a fascinating life so far — a life enriched by art and what he calls social kindness — and he's clearly not ready to put his feet up under his ermine robes just yet. The Big Issue is still sold by those living in poverty but, because of Covid, no longer from the street. Lord Bird discusses the various other ways you can now help out Big Issue vendors but first we talk about Giving Tuesday and Taking It Away Wednesday, with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea set to dismantle the well-used cycleway on Kensington High Street. Native Americans, also known as American Indians, Indigenous Americans, and other terms, are the indigenous peoples of the United States. Indigenous peoples are the first people. We recently, for the first time in US history celebrated Indigenous Peoples day, formerly Christopher Columbus Day. I don't know about you, but I'm feeling the newly branded day. When many of our fellow Americans think of Native American people, vivid images of headdresses, wild and free dancing, mystery, and what is most likely the most popular thought would-be “cowboys and Indians.“ The relationship between Indigenous peoples of America and newcomers is complicated, to say the least. These complications have driven such a deep divide that they are indeed different worlds. Despite Indigenous Americans often living on sovereign lands apart from the majority of Americans, they are experiencing the same disparities in their lives that other people of color in America experience. The impact of COVID-19 on Native peoples have gone wholly unreported. In fact, there is no news concerning Native people, readily available to the non-native population. This has contributed to the ignorance about the very people who paved the way for every newcomer to this land to live and thrive. Our guest today, John Bird “Elk Child,” is a Diversity and Inclusion professional and has a Masters in Education. Although he was trained as a clinician he quickly realized that he had to choose between doing clinical mental health work or community/organizational work. He chose to work with communities and organizations and has been doing some form of that for the past 35 years. John is also a proud member of the Black Foot People, who reside in both the U.S. and Canada. During this episode, John shares the rich history of the Black Feet Nation, belief systems, and communities of some native people that are in such contrast with the way the majority of Americans live, that it seems almost otherworldly. Tune in, take it in and apply all that you can to your life and the lives of others. Special Guest: John Bird.

Mr Peter Bird originates from a small rural village in South Cambridgeshire, UK. His humble beginnings started in Corporation housing and his father was known locally as the Professor because he was the only one they knew that had attended Technical College in Cambridge. Until the age of 16 he attended school within his village and had never traveled outside of the UK. Mr Bird left school with minimum qualification and was in a real sense a school failure. Why did a modern day successful school Superintendent fail school? Well in Mr Bird's opinion he did not fail school, the education system failed him. The memory game of traditional education kills children's creativity and passion to learn which is why he hated school. Mr Bird then started on a long road to prove his intelligence despite his school results resulting in a varied career in many fields which he will share with you. The connecting factor in all his career successes has been his sheer determination to not accept the current system or the situation he has encountered. Instead he has forged on to achieve and now pioneers to bring about change in education which he remains passionate about. During his career in educational leadership, Mr Bird has been the founding Principal in several countries including England, Qatar and currently The International Village School,Channi, India. IVS opened its doors in August 2018 and by JUne 2020 achieved IB World School statues in under two years, and during a global pandemic. Mr Bird's message is simple, education IS the gateway to personal growth and career success, BUT only if the education system fits the pupils and not forces the pupils to fit the education system. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/future-school-leaders/message

Finally, we speak to Omar Ocampo, co-author of the ‘Billionaire Bonanza 2020: Wealth Windfall, Tumbling Taxes and Pandemic Profiteers’ report. He discusses how inequality is an ‘American pre-existing condition,’ the astronomical growth of the wealth of Amazon’s Jeff Bezos during the Covid-19 pandemic which has at the same time rendered 40 million Americans jobless, how Amazon is arguably risking the lives of its workers while Bezos gets richer, how the rich avoid paying taxes through philanthropy and charity, how the government ends up borrowing money from billionaires, how taxes paid by billionaires have fallen 80 percent between 1980-2018, and more!

A funny, straight-talking and brilliant storyteller, John’s journey will have you enraptured from start to finish, in what must be one of the most iconic social enterprises in existence today. Lord John Bird’s story is one of the greatest Holly has had the pleasure to share on this podcast. From his early days in an orphanage, surviving through fighting and stealing, John’s childhood was not an easy one. Poverty-stricken, and in and out of prison, John realised that he would have to make his own path in life. It was a chance meeting, which developed into a friendship with Gordon Roddick (Anita Roddick’s husband), that would set John off on his incredible journey with ‘The Big Issue’. 29 years later, and over 200 million copies sold, The Big Issue is a social enterprise synonymous with the UK and has supported hundreds of thousands of people on the streets. This is a story of grit, chance meetings and the belief that poverty and social inequality should be tackled by empowering those so often forgotten in society. “I’m here to prevent the next generation of Big Issue vendors.”Homelessness is an example of a wicked problem – a complex, messy problem with many causes, contradictory forces, and no easy solution. Wicked problems are rooted in broken systems. It’s estimated that 2% of the world’s population are homeless. But many more – perhaps 1 in 5 people worldwide – may lack adequate and secure housing. In this episode we focus on the situation in the UK, where an unprecedented number of people are without a home or living on the streets. That number has doubled since 2010, and continues to trend upward. What will it take to shift the status quo on homelessness? We start with a report from the frontline of care for homeless people during the pandemic, recorded for us by Sara Emerson of Brighton charity Justlife. The coronavirus lockdown has had the short-term benefit of getting people off the streets and into temporary housing. But that’s an emergency measure, not a solution. Peter digs into the roots of homelessness with Dr Elisabeth Garratt from the Sheffield Methods Institute, who leads a research project exploring people’s experiences of homelessness in Oxford. And he talks to the founder of the Big Issue, Lord John Bird, about possible solutions, and how his own lived experience of homelessness helped him to redefine how we think about the problem. UPDATE: During Covid 19 Lockdown Im re publishing some of the most popular episodes. Good friend of the show Phil Ryan is a top man and as he cant tour right now he has taken his live music into the street where he lives to entertain the locals who are loving it. Check out this chat we had a while back before all the madness started to find out what makes Phil tick..... Phil Ryan has been a passionate campaigner – from helping the homeless to be self-sufficient, to saving his beloved Denmark Street from the voracious appetite of London’s property owning developers. His astonishing musical career has sent Phil across the world over the last forty years—a highlight being when he fronted the Animals in Moscow’s Red Square in front of 100,000 fans. He’s a singer-song writer as well as an entrepreneur who is never afraid to try something bold and new. This could be anything from setting up London’s iconic 12 Bar Club, to the numerous novels he’s written, and scoring the stage version of Silas Marner. Over a Victoria sponge cake at Region’s Park Café, he shared his passionate views with me over some tea for you to eavesdrop on.  “So having a mad father who used to jump out of windows on fire for a living means your childhood is going to be pretty unusual, and it was.”  2:15 As you might gather from the above quote, Phil had a very interesting father, and perhaps more importantly, a father that pushed him headlong into a creative life. Phil had many books impressed upon him and became a voracious reader at an early age. This upbringing would push him to become a writer in his later years. But first came music. Phil’s first instrument was the ukulele, which he then graduated from to a banjo—and then around the age of 12 (when girls started to become more appealing to him) he moved on to the guitar.  6:10 Phil’s musical career advanced quickly, catching a few breaks here and there, managing to share the stage with Johnny Cash as just an 18 year-old with a 12 string guitar. There is a song that Phil will play from time to time that will choke him up—it has a line in it that goes “In five minutes your whole life can change”. This sums up his entire life, one filled with bizarre encounters and chance meetings that have taken him down roads he never knew were there.   “I talk about my life as a ‘Portfolio Career,’ which is actually immaturity masquerading as sense of purpose and plan.”  12:14  John Bird and Phil came together to start The Big Issue, where they tackled starting a magazine with a purpose. They both took on as many hats as they could to get the magazine up and running, and Phil is proud to say the rules he originally set in place are still used in the Big Issue. The magazine is a social enterprise—not a charity. It urges people to get up, take action, and start taking steps towards financial security and a sustainable lifestyle with The Big Issue’s help. As of now, The Big Issue is in 72 countries and has impacted millions of lives. 21:16 The Big Issue has spawned Big Invest –they managed to get millions and supporting hundreds of social enterprise business, things that directly influence the communities they service. And Phil is all about preserving communities and the beauty that holds them together, which for him is the magic of music—an art that he wishes London embraced more by supporting its local musicians.  Links www.philryanmusic.co.uk www.aswegrowold.com (http://www.aswegrowold.com) ---- Phil's beautiful new song and video www.silasmarner.co.uk (http://www.silasmarner.co.uk)    ---- Full stage musical pitch for Silas Marner Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2GLk0Cm (https://spoti.fi/2GLk0Cm) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrTuJlDWR64 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrTuJlDWR64%0d) PhilRyanMusic.co.uk (http://www.philryanmusic.co.uk/) Support this podcast

He led the launch of the UK Social Bond Fund in partnership with Big Issue Invest in January 2014. They currently have four funds with over £400m under management. Simon says, “You shouldn’t have to sacrifice financial returns in order to do good for society.” Simon shares how that exponential growth of social and sustainability bonds is now outpacing green bonds and that national governments are moving into green bonds. He explains how impact measurement happens only after engagement and that any measure is good as long as it provides evidence. Highlights in this episode: * You can do good for society without sacrificing financial returns  * Bonds are key to bringing mainstream into impact investment * The challenge of “how we measure impact” * The importance of Social Alpha and Social Intensity Ratings * How investments are mapped to impact categories and SDG sub-targets * Knocking on doors of the banks with the capacity to issue larger sustainability bonds  * We need national governments and aggregators in the bond market involved in social and sustainability bonds Useful links: Columbia Threadneedle - [https://www.columbiathreadneedle.co.uk/](https://www.columbiathreadneedle.co.uk/) Simon Bond - [https://www.linkedin.com/in/simon-bond-6500b367/](https://www.linkedin.com/in/simon-bond-6500b367/) UK Social Bond Fund - [https://www.columbiathreadneedle.co.uk/regional-home/institutional/ct-investment-capabilities/fixed-income/uk-social-bond-fund/](https://www.columbiathreadneedle.co.uk/regional-home/institutional/ct-investment-capabilities/fixed-income/uk-social-bond-fund/) Annual report - [https://www.columbiathreadneedle.co.uk/media/12629605/en_uk_social_bond_fund_annual_report_2018.pdf](https://www.columbiathreadneedle.co.uk/media/12629605/en_uk_social_bond_fund_annual_report_2018.pdf) Big Issue Invest - [https://bigissueinvest.com/uk-social-bond-fund/](https://bigissueinvest.com/uk-social-bond-fund/) John Bird, founder of The Big Issue - [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Bird,_Baron_Bird](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Bird,_Baron_Bird) Peabody Trust - [https://www.peabody.org.uk/](https://www.peabody.org.uk/) The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), EYE Bond Program (Education, Youth, Employment) - [https://www.iadb.org/en/idb-finance/investors/eye-bond-program](https://www.iadb.org/en/idb-finance/investors/eye-bond-program) Time Stamp: [02:12] 33 years in corporate bonds and impact [05:01] Analysing Peabody Trust in my first job [07:50] US, UK and European Social Bond Funds are all growing [12:06] Bonds give more targeted impact, Big Issue partnership [19:17] Why the liquidity of bonds is important [23:50] Measurement comes from engagement [27:30] Green Bonds and the immense implication for society [28:23] How to measure job impact and how to launch a social bond [36:05] National government issuing green bonds [38:11] Danone's social impact bond [43:30] “Bringing mainstream into Social Investment” [46:13] Mapping to bond issues to the underlying 169 SDG sub-targets [48:00] Social bonds will grow exponentially, national governments are issuing Green Bonds [49:12] Columbia Threadneedle is invested in this area and in me [52:36] Simon Bond's life and career inspiration [54:18] A good leader Connect with JP Dallmann on [Linkedin](https://www.linkedin.com/in/jp-dallmann/), [Twitter](https://twitter.com/JPDallmann), or [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/inspiredbyjp/). Only advertised by word of mouth, remarkably 46 men and women showed up at 6 AM for the first meeting! Everyone enjoyed the camaraderie so much they decided to meet monthly for lunch, thus the Oilfield Christian Fellowship was founded and within a few months, as many as 250 were attending.Today OCF luncheons and dinners are held in Canada, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Wyoming, and Pennsylvania, with more chapters in the making. Here speakers share how they came to know Christ and what He is doing in their lives. Big Issue founder John Bird talks to Michael Berkeley about the role music played in transforming his life. For two weeks in 1970 John Bird worked in the Houses of Parliament washing dishes; in 2015 he returned as a life peer. To say he didn’t have a great start in life is something of an understatement. Born in 1946 in a Notting Hill slum, he was five when his family was made homeless and at seven he was taken into care. Much of his teens was spent in reform school, he slept rough, and he went to prison several times for stealing. But John Bird turned his life around and has devoted it to fighting for social justice and particularly for homeless people, founding the Big Issue in 1991 with Gordon Roddick. Nearly thirty years on, and with over 200 million copies sold, it’s become a multi-million pound social investment enterprise, and has helped 92,000 vendors earn nearly £120 million pounds. John tells Michael about the music that cut through his chaotic childhood, and we hear Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture, played to John's class by a beleaguered music teacher and which John has never forgotten. Passionate about making classical music accessible to all and breaking down notions of elitism in music, John chooses works by Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Weber, Wagner and Steve Reich, music he has discovered on his extraordinary journey from reform school and prison to the House of Lords. Over a Victoria sponge cake and tea at Region’s Park Café, he shared his passionate views with for you to eavesdrop on. “So having a mad father who used to jump out of windows on fire for a living means your childhood is going to be pretty unusual, and it was.” [2:15] As you might gather from the above quote, Phil had a very interesting father, and perhaps more importantly, a father that pushed him headlong into a creative life. [6:10] Phil’s musical career advanced quickly, catching a few breaks here and there, managing to share the stage with Johnny Cash as just an 18 year-old with a 12 string guitar. There is a song that Phil will play from time to time that will choke him up—it has a line in it that goes “In five minutes your whole life can change”. This sums up his entire life, one filled with bizarre encounters and chance meetings that have taken him down roads he never knew were there. “I talk about my life as a ‘Portfolio Career,’ which is actually immaturity masquerading as sense of purpose and plan.”   [12:14] John Bird and Phil came together to start The Big Issue, where they tackled starting a magazine with a purpose. [21:16] The Big Issue has spawned Big Invest –they managed to get millions and supporting hundreds of social enterprise business, things that directly influence the communities they service. And Phil is all about preserving communities and the beauty that holds them together, which for him is the magic of music—an art that he wishes London embraced more by supporting its local musicians.   Links PhilRyanMusic.co.uk (http://www.philryanmusic.co.uk/) Support this podcast

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the impressionist and satirist Rory Bremner. He was born in Edinburgh in 1961. A self-confessed show-off, he started doing impersonations at primary school, sending up teachers, sports commentators and Moira Anderson! Entertaining his school friends inevitably developed into performing on stage and he worked as a stand up on the comedy circuit, and notably at the Edinburgh Festival. Following his sell-out run at the Festival in 1986 the BBC offered him his first television series, Now Something Else. It ran on BBC2 for seven years. In 1993 he moved to Channel 4, where his show Rory Bremner - Who Else? developed a much more hard-edged, satirical and political bite. It also picked up more than 10 major awards including Baftas for himself and fellow writer-performers John Bird and John Fortune. His meticulous research and observation of the politicians he mimics inevitably led to his fraternising with them and ultimately led to being awarded the final accolade for a satirist: he was banned from Labour's battle bus in the 2001 election campaign.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Have I Told You Lately? by Van Morrison Book: The History of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon Luxury: Radio

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is John Bird. As a student, he changed the face of the Cambridge Footlights review by rejecting jokes on bed-makers and punting and writing a political review instead. In the early 1960s he helped found The Establishment Club with Peter Cook. Writing sketches with John Fortune, they found they were unable to find suitable actors to perform their work, and so took to the stage themselves. Satire, he says, died in the late 1960s and he struggled to make a living, until Rory Bremner hired them. As 'The Two Johns', their dialogues featuring an awkward interviewer and slippery politician have won them much recognition and a BAFTA award.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Repons by Pierre Boulez Book: The collected works by Wallace Stevens Luxury: 2,000 soft loo rolls
