See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
John Bohannon. Nostro fratello John Bohannon. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This Week in Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence (AI) Podcast
Today friend of the show and esteemed guest host John Bohannon is back with another great interview, this time around joined by Oren Etzioni, former CEO of the Allen Institute for AI, where he is currently an advisor. In our conversation with Oren, we discuss his philosophy as a researcher and how that has manifested in his pivot to institution builder. We also explore his thoughts on the current landscape of NLP, including the emergence of LLMs and the hype being built up around AI systems from folks like Elon Musk. Finally, we explore some of the research coming out of AI2, including Semantic Scholar, an AI-powered research tool analogous to arxiv, and the somewhat controversial Delphi project, a research prototype designed to model people's moral judgments on a variety of everyday situations.

In this extra special episode of the TWIML AI Podcast, a friend of the show John Bohannon leads a jam-packed conversation with Hugging Face's recently appointed head of research Douwe Kiela. In our conversation with Douwe, we explore his role at the company, how his perception of Hugging Face has changed since joining, and what research entails at the company. We discuss the emergence of the transformer model and the emergence of BERT-ology, the recent shift to solving more multimodal problems, the importance of this subfield as one of the “Grand Directions'' of Hugging Face's research agenda, and the importance of BLOOM, the open-access Multilingual Language Model that was the output of the BigScience project. Finally, we get into how Douwe's background in philosophy shapes his view of current projects, as well as his projections for the future of NLP and multimodal ML. This Week in Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence (AI) Podcast
Today we're joined by friend of the show John Bohannon, the director of science at Primer AI, to help us showcase all of the great achievements and accomplishments in NLP in 2021! In our conversation, John shares his two major takeaways from last year, 1) NLP as we know it has changed, and we're back into the incremental phase of the science, and 2) NLP is “eating” the rest of machine learning. We explore the implications of these two major themes across the discipline, as well as best papers, up and coming startups, great things that did happen, and even a few bad things that didn't. Finally, we explore what 2022 and beyond will look like for NLP, from multilingual NLP to use cases for the influx of large auto-regressive language models like GPT-3 and others, as well as ethical implications that are reverberating across domains and the changes that have been ushered in in that vein. Michelle and Mark are together again this week to talk with John Bohannon about AI startup, Primer. His goal is to build systems that continuously read documents and write about what they discover. He discusses his recent work building a self-updating knowledge base and the research his team just published. Perhaps most interesting is the circuitous path he took to get to Primer. Hear about his adventures along the way to becoming a data scientist specializing in natural language processing. How does a microbiologist who developed a pregnancy test for fish get distracted by Python? What does contemporary dance have to do with establishing AI policy? Join us as he weaves a common thread along his career path: encountering interesting problems and discovering creative ways to solve them. John Bohannon John Bohannon is the Director of Science at Primer, an AI startup in San Francisco. Until 2017 he was an investigative journalist and data scientist writing mainly for Science magazine and Wired. He spent the first half of his career as a foreign correspondent, including as a Fulbright scholar in Berlin. His reporting from Gaza won the Reuters-IUCN Media Award for Excellence in Environmental Reporting from Europe. While embedded with military forces in Afghanistan he engineered the first voluntary release of civilian casualty data by NATO and the United Nations. As a visiting scholar in the Program in Ethics and Health at Harvard University he focused on the involvement of doctors and social scientists in the US government’s torture program. He was also the scientific advisor to Isabella Rosselini for “Green Porno” (winner of 4 Webby awards) and “Animals Distract Me” (official selection, 2011 Sundance Film Festival). He is the author of a peer-reviewed study of people’s inability to distinguish pet food from paté, which inspired Stephen Colbert to eat cat food on television. He has a PhD in molecular biology from the University of Oxford. This Week in Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence (AI) Podcast
In this episode i'm joined by John Bohannan, Director of Science at AI startup Primer. As you all may know, a few weeks ago we released my interview with Google legend Jeff Dean, which, by the way, you should definitely check if you haven’t already. Anyway, in that interview, Jeff mentions the recent explosion of machine learning papers on arXiv, which I responded to jokingly by asking whether Google had already developed the AI system to help them summarize and track all of them. While Jeff didn’t have anything specific to offer, a listener reached out and let me know that John was in fact already working on this problem. In our conversation, John and I discuss his work on Primer Science, a tool that harvests content uploaded to arxiv, sorts it into natural topics using unsupervised learning, then gives relevant summaries of the activity happening in different innovation areas. We spend a good amount of time on the inner workings of Primer Science, including their data pipeline and some of the tools they use, how they determine “ground truth” for training their models, and the use of heuristics to supplement NLP in their processing. The notes for this show can be found at twimlai.com/talk/136

Global Footprint We're often told that we consume so much that we need one and a half planets. It comes from the Global Footprint Network a think-tank that has pioneered ecological foot-printing but what does that number even mean, and is it helpful? Chocolate makes you thinner We tell the story behind the chocolate experiment designed to deliberately fool the press. Concerned about the amount of pseudo-science surrounding diet and nutrition, John Bohannon and Peter Onneken ran a trial and had the results published in an online journal, sent out a press release. While the results were correct the trial wasn't very robust but this didn't stop the story that chocolate made you thinner running in newspapers, magazines and on TV around the world. Peter and John had fooled the press and they made a documentary about it. But the experiment has sparked a debate about whether it was ethical to fool the press in this way and whether the whole project was just self-serving.
My good friend John Bohannon and I have an exciting exchange about a legalistic identity: an identity defined and shaped by our obsession to our performance for Jesus rather than Jesus' performance for us. Legalism flips God's plan of grace on its head and reverses God's design backwards, putting the focus on us and how well we do instead of focusing on Jesus work on our behalf. Grace sets us free to celebrate and enjoy the freedom we have in letting go of ourselves and grabbing hold of Jesus. Dear Montréal,This week on the radio show we explore some new territory by having professional Latin dancer Alina Litvak on the show. We talk to her about the Latin & ballroom dance studio she started with her partner Maxim Fomin, Quartier Latin. We also quiz her about the different dance styles they deal with, and the life of a competitive dancer. In the second half hour Jenn tells us about an amazing contest inviting scholars to create a dance video representation of their doctoral thesis. J.D. chimes in that you can see great Ted talk titled Dance vs. powerpoint, a modest proposal by the very same John Bohannon who organizes the Dance Your PhD contest. We then move into some heavier news about the Canadian Conference of the Arts funding loss, and a general discussion about the future of arts funding. Before we sign off, Jenn takes the opportunity to plug her upcoming show as a part of Studio Fleur D’asphalte’s Les Performance de la mi-lune on August 4th. Look out for her company, Woo Me Myth.J.D. also has a performance coming up with Glam Glam Productions as a part of Diver/cité. On that note, tune in next week for our roundtable discussion with some wonderful queer artists! Our show from AUGUST 2nd, 2012Listen:(Download)Until next week,Allison Burns, Jenn Doan and J.D.
