This week the PsychoFellas chat with the soulful songbird Maleke O'Ney. Maleke is a multi-talented singer/songwriter that was born in a small town in Florida and later moved to the nation’s capital where she began her musical career. Maleke performed at several BET sponsored events and was the lead singer for a popular GoGo Band. This exposure gained the attention of a production team birthed from the Tank and Ginuwine camps. They created a body of work that sparked the interest of Dreamworks reps and Maleke was introduced to the reality of the music business. After some creative differences, Maleke refocused and repositioned herself to begin a new chapter in her journey as an Independent Artist in Atlanta, GA. Maleke has collaborated and forged many great relationships with the entertainment industry elite. Maleke has established herself not only as a highly sought after Performing Artist, but one of the go to writers within the Atlanta and UK music scenes. In 2014 Maleke released her debut EP “The ReIntroduction”, that depicts the magnetic performer’s struggles with love, relationships and self-discovery. It garnered rave reviews from many, including Sonic Soul Review Magazine: “The ReIntroduction is a must have in your collection! Her hauntingly, sticky voice oozes everything soul music has been missing.” Before dedicating focus to her 2018 release, “Confessions of a Pentecostal Girl”, Maleke performed to sold-out crowds and toured internationally with Artists such as Ro James, Eric Roberson, BJ The Chicago Kid, Julie Dexter, Jesse Fisher, Janelle Monae, Edwin McCain, Jarrod Lawson, The DangerFeel Newbies and Loose Ends to name a few! Her forthcoming release entitled “Not Really, But Kinda” is a collaboration with famed Unhooked Generation and DJ Jazzy Jeff’s Playlist Retreat alumni, DJ AppleJac. Born and raised in Birmingham, England, this classically trained artist composes and arranges her own music. Influenced by legends such as Nancy Wilson, Abbey Lincoln, and Bob Marley, as well as popular icons Omar and Sade, Julie takes classic soul to the heart of Artistry. Fans and critics across the globe have followed her journey through the circles of Jazz, Broken-Beat, Bossa-Nova, Reggae, Afro-Beat and Soul. Her dynamic voice was first heard in 1994 on "The Jamaican Beat" Vol 1 with Jazz Jamaica then later in 1997 on Dune Records' release of J-Life, a European Jazz quintet formed by Gary Crosby and led by Jason Yarde. She later toured several continents with Jazz legend Courtney Pine as the lead vocalist for his ensemble. It was in 1999 that Julie took a leap of faith and moved to Atlanta, Georgia. She launched her own label, Ketch A Vibe Records and in 2000 released the critically acclaimed EP Peace of Mind, followed by Dexterity (2002), and Conscious (2005). Moon Bossa, a collaboration with Khari Simmons was released in 2007 and her single "Ketch A Vibe" was featured in national radio ads for Democratic Presidential Candidate Senator Barack Obama. From Jazz to World Music, Soul and beyond, Julie Dexter is one of an elite few whose talent can transcend genres. She makes it all work on her own terms, as an audaciously independent artist with an undeniable connection to her audience. Julie has shared the spotlight with artists Mint Condition, Jill Scott, Bilal, Omar, Loose Ends, Rachelle Ferrell, Ledisi, Eric Roberson and Raheem DeVaughn to name a few, Julie not only holds her own with them but has been praised and respected by them too. Her latest anticipated project with Chicago's own Producer/DJ Steve "Miggedy" Maestro is entitled 'New Again." the fruits of his labor, JSoul has teamed up with some of soul music’s most illustrious artists such as: Eric Roberson, The Floacist, Julie Dexter and the incomparable Carol Riddick; who happens to be featured on the official single, “Tell Me.” No stranger to Hip-Hop, JSoul has collaborated with the DMV’s own, Mr. International himself, Substantial. He is crossing all boundaries and bridging them together with Black Sinatra. Baltimore’s own, JSoul, has been influenced by legends. He’s studied their formulas, paid his dues, and has mastered his very own unique style that is reminiscent of old school flavor, with a new school sound. Singer, songwriter and producer are three titles JSoul embodies. He has written and produced all the music on Black Sinatra. JSoul expresses his interpretations of love by using his velvet vocals, gliding them over soulful tracks. This is simply one of the many reasons why it makes him the Soul Brotha #1 to watch out for! By now you know this show is about all things soulful. From time to time we have featured guest DJs, podcasters, and a healthy dose of international musicians with fierce showmanship! Today's Labor Day Special will help you whistle while you work. We feature the talents of Honey Soul...podcaster, dj, interviewer to the stars. I'm a fan of her podcast which has up close and personal interviews with newsmakers of the soul scene. Find Honey Soul at her homesite, iTunes, and Myspace.com. Also, she is a regular DJ at Superstation ProjectVibe.net! Be sure to get all the downloads and support her wonderful work via donation and/or online purchase of artist's tracks! We proudly give to you the one and only Honey Soul..... COA I'm a strong believer in making your own opportunities. In Oct. 2004 I created a site called honeysoul.com. Honeysoul.com's audience consists of a large number of loyal, soul music supporters who actually buy music (yes I know that's a strange concept but I'm not kidding, it still actually happens). In addition to honeysoul.com featuring my own mix of "radio blogs," full CD previews, videos, new releases, and headlines I am very proud of my interviews or "conversations" as I like to call them. I have had the pleasure of talking to Jaguar Wright, Dwele (twice), Wayna, Gaelle, Carmen Rodgers, Lina, Julie Dexter, Darien Brockington (twice), Syleena Johnson, Ladybug Mecca, Stokley Williams (Mint Condition), Jonz, Geno Young, Jon B, Anthony David, Goapele, Frank McComb (twice), Valencia Robinson, Eska, Javier, Esthero, Yewande, Joi, Ron Isley, Lisa Shaw, Van Hunt, Amel Larrieux, Kim Hill, Teena Marie, Donell Jones, Bilal Salaam, Sy Smith, Randevyn, Carol Riddick, Yolanda Johnson and Raheem Devaughn. Who's next? It may be you. If you're a soul artist making meaningful music, let's talk. -Honey- Honey Soul
