Whenever Kristy struggled with anxiety or depression in the past, she coped by keeping herself busy. Even when she endured years and years of IVF and ICSI, she coped by keeping herself busy. But when she experienced birth trauma and a sudden decline in her mental health during postpartum, none of her previous coping mechanisms could be relied on. Instead of throwing herself into exercising three times a day, working on weekends, starting projects, learning a new skill, doing puzzles, building Lego, or reading, Kristy was confronted by the stillness of motherhood. Then, after nine months of depression, culminating in suicidal ideation, Kristy went to her GP for help, where she was confronted by an unexpected, but enlightening, diagnosis: ADHD. In this heartfelt and insightful episode, Kristy shares the many ways she is managing her ADHD and mental health in motherhood, while reflecting on the lessons she has learnt along her journey and celebrating all the friends who have helped her every step of the way. If you're an older mum, if you're a mum who has undergone fertility treatments, if you're a mum with a history of anxiety or depression, if you're a mum who is navigating ADHD in motherhood, or if you're just an all-round awesome human being, then this episode is for you.   EPISODE SPONSOR This episode of Perinatal Stories Australia is proudly sponsored by Mums Matter Psychology—because your mental health matters. It's nearly impossible to think about Chloe's story without thinking about all the places where she navigated the worst of her anxiety and melancholic depression: the hospital where she was left parenting in a traumatised body after a retained placenta; the inner-city Sydney suburb where, shockingly, she could not access any maternity support services; her in-law's house on the other side of Sydney where she moved to create a village but could not sleep; and the local esplanade where she pushed the pram and fought against her suicidal ideation every day. That's not even mentioning the emergency department, the short-stay psychiatric emergency care unit, and eventually the mother-and-baby hospital (MBU) where she was admitted for two months, all of which were integral to her story. In each setting, Chloe not only faced unenviable symptoms, but she also had to confront her own unwillingness to ask for help, the lies depression made her believe, her own trauma around electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and the question many MBU mothers grapple with ‘when will it finally be my turn to go home?' This is Chloe's profound story, what she calls her real reckoning and dark night of the soul, that explores the realities of experiencing and recovering from an acute mental health episode in early motherhood. It's a story about losing and finding yourself again in the most unexpected of places, but above all, it's a story about finally coming home. Please note, this episode touches on suicide and suicidal ideation. Go gently.   EPISODE SPONSOR This episode of Perinatal Stories Australia is proudly sponsored by Mums Matter Psychology—because your mental health matters. Episode 268Research has long linked loneliness to surprising health conditions, including diabetes and some cancers. The assumption has been that loneliness in some way causes these issues, perhaps through increased stress or inflammation. But in a study of tens of thousands of people's biomedical data, that link has gotten more complicated. Where does this leave the relationship between loneliness and health, and the public health programs that are trying to tackle both?Supermassive black holes are so big and existed so early in the universe's history that astronomers are unsure how they formed. Dark matter to the rescue? Among the theories of how they formed is “direct collapse,” which a study finds may be possible with some help from decaying dark matter. But a specific type of dark matter is needed to make this theory work…so what's next?A photon has been observed travelling in negative time. It was caught leaving a cloud of atoms before it ever entered it. How is this possible? Is this a time travelling photon? Well, somehow, no laws of physics were broken. Obviously some quirky quantum effects are in play – but what exactly is going on?Plus: How Earth may have once had a ring around it; a pair of black hole jets that are 23 million light years across; how some long-stemmed flowers have evolved to help bats pollinate them; and the discovery of a brand new, teeny tiny chameleon.Hosts Timothy Revell and Christie Taylor discuss with guests Leah Crane, Sophie Bushwick and Karmela Padavic-Callaghan.To read more about these stories, visit newscientist.com.Get 10 weeks of unlimited digital access to newscientist.com and our app for £10/$10 by visiting: https://www.newscientist.com/podcast Hosted on Acast. He really helps so much and does his utmost to keep me organised and on track.   What you may not know is that John retired from the police as a result of ill health in 2022!   Over the years, his mental health deteriorated significantly, which resulted in him suffering from severe anxiety, depression, and PTSD. He tried lots of different remedies and medications, but he did reach the point where he had to accept that he was just too unwell to continue as a police officer and that he couldn't recover and get well whilst he remained in that environment.   So, he retired on ill health in 2022, but the process itself was anything but smooth and it is incredibly challenging and there is a real lack of guidance and support, so John very kindly created this guide to help and support you through the process.   The Ill-Health Retirement Guide is completely FREE, you don't have to sign up or anything, you literally download it from the Blue Light Leavers website Blue Light Leavers ‘Ill-Health & Misconduct' section.   In this academy session, we talk through ill health retirement and how long the process takes, what the process looks like, and some of the challenges that you might come across.   I'm really grateful to John for sharing his experience and his knowledge. We've had numerous people reach out to him for a bit of help and support through their process for some advice and guidance, and he really knows his stuff.   If you or someone you know is being considered for or are going through the process and would like to reach out to John, then you can do that on john@bluelightleavers.com   In addition to the Blue Light Leavers Ill-Health Retirement Guide there is also support available from:  IoDPA (Injury on Duty Pensioners Association) they are the go-to for all things Ill-Heath Retirement and Injury on Duty claims. OCD had been part of Emma's life for many years, although she just didn't know it. Like for so many of us, her life-long OCD wasn't picked up on until early motherhood, after two miscarriages and the birth of a premature baby during a pandemic lockdown. In Emma's words, “it awoke the OCD beast.” This is one mother's poignant story about the pain of loss, of experiencing depression and an OCD crisis in motherhood, the resulting shame and anger that came with the diagnosis, and the all-too-familiar lengthy and financial barriers encountered when seeking support. This is also one mother's touching story about the very real power that radical acceptance, psychoeducation, writing, and community can have on the journey towards recovery and taming the ‘OCD beast'. This is Emma's story - of both power and pain, of acceptance and resistance, of isolation and community - and it's a story that will stay with you for a long time. After a blissful experience with her first son, it never occurred to Jess that a subsequent pregnancy and postpartum could be any different - until she found out she was pregnant with twins. From real and perceived health complications, Jess's mental health rapidly declined with every intrusive thought and compulsion that took over her life. The increased caretaking demands of parenting multiples and a toddler only compounded the feeling that she wasn't enough for her children. Despite being cared for by the local acute mental health team, Jess started to experience hallucinations and psychosis. This is one mother's heart-wrenching story that epitomises the painful realities of experiencing a perinatal mental illness: of your children being both your motivation to get better and your trigger; of wanting to keep your children safe but feeling unsafe in your own body and mind; and of wanting the best for your children but feeling like they're better off without you. Zuma dispels ill-health rumors at party rally

Former South African President Jacob Zuma made his first public appearance in a week as his party sought to dispel speculation that he's ill. Zuma, who has spearheaded the election campaign of the opposition uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) since it launched in December, failed to attend a series of party events this month. South African media including News24 have reported that Zuma has had a series of falls that have raised concerns among his medical and security teams. The 82-year-old former leader danced and sang on a stage at a party rally at his homestead in Nkandla in rural KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday evening as scores of supporters chanted his name. Zuma had visible stitches above his left eye and while he didn't address the reports about his health, his party derided them as attempts to undermine the party's growth. "The falsehoods about President Zuma's health are a desperate attempt to disrupt our progress and weaken our resolve," the MKP said in a statement. Zuma led South Africa for nine scandal-marred years that included allegations of large-scale corruption and the looting of billions of dollars of government funds. He's denied wrongdoing and hasn't been indicted on the accusations. His popularity, particularly in the second-most populous province of KwaZulu-Natal, is one of the key reasons the party is garnering support that threatens the ruling African National Congress's (ANC's) ability to maintain the national majority it's had since coming to power in 1994. The MKP's policies include the expansion of the social security net, the expropriation of land without compensation and the nationalisation of all major banks - including the central bank - and mines. Zuma told the crowd that the party aims to secure a two-thirds majority in parliament, a feat the ANC last held under his predecessor Thabo Mbeki - in order to change laws that hinder the wellbeing of black people who are the "rightful owners" of the country.

This has included examining how the motivation underpinning goal striving can impact upon the self-regulation of goals and well-being. Recently, Laura has researched in areas associated with elite performance environments, including the role of personality in elite coach-athlete relationships, resilience, psychological safety and fear of failure in a national sport governing body, and the experience of release from professional football academies. Welcome to Episode 82 of the Blue Light Leavers podcast. In this episode I'm talking to Simon and Angela Barry. In our first call, Simon really was genuinely pretty broken. He was lacking self-confidence, self-esteem, and he'd clearly been through a really tough time. They'd applied for a load of jobs with no success getting through to interviews, so we ended up working one to one. Why did I interview both? Well, I really wanted to share how PTSD and ill-health, retirement and all the associated symptoms and stress of the situation, can really impact everyone around you. Angela was so supportive, and she was very much part of this process, and she actually joined us for every call that we had. We talk about how we found the right roles, the application process, the interview prep, being ghosted, and the impact of dealing with the knockbacks and what success felt like with the choice of two jobs. I promise this is a stunning and very honest account of what they went through, and I really hope you enjoy it. I'm so grateful to Simon and Angela for their time and their honesty. 2023 Great Pottery Throw Down contestant Rebecca Norris tells me how she reignited her creative flame through pottery while navigating the demands of a teaching career.Rebecca was brought up in Northern England, where working-class values often overshadowed her artistic ambitions. She recounts finding solace in art during her school years and the subsequent pressure to prioritize a pragmatic career over her creative interests. Yet, despite these challenges, Rebecca's story is a beacon of inspiration, showcasing her ability to weave creativity into her life, teaching pottery workshops, crafting her own pieces, and imparting her knowledge at a local art school.Rebecca studied politics and English, although she didn't get along with ‘traditional' university, so changed to home study instead, and emigrated from the UK to Australia with her husband and son. While working in teaching, and after a significant health struggle, Rebecca made the decision to try as many craft disciplines as she could, and began reconnecting with her artistic side. And for those with a penchant for behind-the-scenes insights, Rebecca takes us through the labyrinth of emotions that came with her stint on the Great Pottery Throw Down. From the initial nerves of the application process to the empowering environment of the show, Rebecca's experience as a contestant reveals the deep connection between creativity and emotional well-being. Finally, as we discuss the complexities of pursuing a creative path post-show, Rebecca candidly discusses her future aspirations and the community support that sustains her. On this episode of the podcast I discuss the term "brain fog" and if this is appropriate when talking about neurological impairment in Long Covid. I discuss research and two papers which explain neurological complications with Long Covid and other post viral conditions. Cognitive dysfunction is scary, experiencing the loss of words, forgetting full conversations, moments in your life. Cognitive dysfunction effects many of our systems and evokes a multitude of associated symptoms. I also discuss how cognitive impairment is often suggested by medical professionals, as being a mental health condition, anxiety/depression rather than being acknowledged as cognitive dysfunction. This is detrimental to any treatment or therapies required for either/or cognitive dysfunction or mental health. It is imperative that further research is undertaken, and medical professionals have extended training, on the multi complex condition Long Covid is and how to appropriately address and treat the associated symptoms that effect the person, physically, cognitively, emotionally and mentally. Why are pregnant women advised to avoid eating fat when fat is one of the building blocks of the human body? Dr. Robert Kiltz provides clear answers and dispels many of the misconceptions that have plagued us for far too long. As a fertility expert who focuses on metabolic health and incorporates nutrition in his practice, he challenges the generally accepted idea of a healthy diet and how it relates to fertility. Couples come to him when they struggle to conceive. And the primary reason, like every other disease, is inflammation. Plant-based diets and our avoidance of fat causes inflammation. In this episode, Dr. Kiltz blows the lid off the myth that plant-based diets are always healthy. As shared via Brits in Portugal - https://www.facebook.com/BritsInPortugalWhen to call INEM on 112 (European Emergency Number) and when to seek advice from the SNS24 line. Helpful info here courtesy of our friends at Safe Communities Portugal.LAUNCH OF “WHEN TO CALL SNS 24 OR INEM” CAMPAIGN The General Directorate of Health (DGS), Shared Services of the Ministry of Health (SPMS) and the National Institute of Medical Emergencies (INEM) launch today the Campaign “When to call SNS 24 or INEM?” to raise awareness of the correct use of the lines “808 24 24 24” and “112” by citizens. The inappropriate use of these lines can delay critical responses in time and occupy resources in the wrong way. With the objective of providing an improvement in the quality of care and guaranteeing the access of users to the most competent body to provide the intended service at any given moment, the campaign compares non-emergent health problems and situations that may involve risk to life, thus clarifying when to use SNS 24 or INEM. In case of mild or moderate pain, fever, change in blood pressure, itching, persistent cough, persistent crying of the child, diarrhoea or nausea, or other non-emergency situations, the user should contact SNS 24 through the number 808 24 24 24 to receive the appropriate advice. When it comes to an accident with injured people, a suspected stroke, chest pain, choking, difficulty breathing, altered state of consciousness, severe burns or burns in sensitive areas, heavy or uncontrollable bleeding for example, the user should call 112 – European Emergency Number. In 2022, the SNS 24 Line answered more than nine million calls, the highest number ever. The Urgent Patients Guidance Centres (CODU) of INEM also received more than 1.5 million calls that year, the highest number since records began. Of these calls answered at the INEM CODU, more than 103,000 were transferred to the SNS 24, which represents an average of 280 calls per day that were considered non-urgent and an increase of 10% compared to 2021.

It was only after baby number two, Amelia, that Tegan was reacquainted with anxiety and OCD. Unfortunately, it was far from a happy reunion. After weeks of being dismissed by medical professionals and the hospital, Tegan finally received the care she needed when she was admitted to an MBU (Mother and Baby Psychiatric Unit), all thanks to the help of an unlikely stranger. In this episode we discuss preparing for pregnancy and postpartum with a prior history of mental ill health, postpartum OCD, anxiety, and depression, an MBU admission, medication, and parenting during COVID-lockdown.   FOLLOW the podcast on Instagram and Facebook @perinatalstoriesaustralia for more maternal mental health stories, education, advocacy, and community. With a long history of anxiety, I had every intention of not letting anxiety get in the way of birth and parenting. In fact, I spent most of my pregnancy doing everything I thought was ‘right' to plan and protect my mental health in postpartum. Unfortunately, I was so focused on postpartum that I couldn't see the anxiety escalating throughout my pregnancy. Welcome to Perinatal Stories Australia. In this first episode, I share part one of my own story and talk about what happens when, unfortunately like me, maternal mental ill health actually begins in pregnancy.   FOLLOW the podcast on Instagram and Facebook @perinatalstoriesaustralia for more maternal mental health stories, education, advocacy, and community. Associations of cannabis potency with mental ill health and addiction: a systemic review The Lancet Psychiatry Cannabis potency, defined as the concentration of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), has increased internationally, which could increase the risk of adverse health outcomes for cannabis users. This is the first systematic review of the association of cannabis potency with mental health and addiction. Overall, use of higher potency cannabis, relative to lower potency cannabis, was associated with an increased risk of psychosis and Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD). Evidence varied for depression and anxiety. The association of cannabis potency with CUD and psychosis highlights its relevance in health-care settings and for public health guidelines and policies on cannabis sales. Standardization of exposure measures and longitudinal designs are needed to strengthen the evidence of this association.   Read this issue of the ASAM Weekly Subscribe to the ASAM Weekly Visit ASAM
