Four years later, I'm still here, knowing that persistence shapes both leaders and the organizations they guide.” When Purpose Pays Better Than Paychecks “Our team can't match the salaries of big tech giants, but what we offer is purpose. BearingPoint study finds 43% of C-suite adopting a 'wait and see' approach to AI

Management and technology consultancy BearingPoint, has launched an in-depth study on artificial intelligence (AI), emphasising the critical need for organisations to transition into augmented organisations to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving market landscape. The research reveals a notable scepticism towards AI among executives in Ireland and the UK, potentially delaying the necessary transformation. An augmented organisation leverages AI and other emerging technologies to enhance capabilities and operational efficiency, reinventing customer and employee experiences and, ultimately, disrupting its value chain to stay relevant in the market. The study, titled 'AI-driven transformation: Becoming an augmented organisation,' underscores AI adoption as a strategic imperative for long-term success. The research, which surveyed 700 C-suite executives across Europe (including 170 from Ireland and the UK), the US, and Asia, revealed key strategies and challenges in AI adoption. Notably, there is scepticism towards AI among executives in Ireland and the UK, with 43% adopting a 'wait and see' approach. The study also found that only 38% of respondents in Ireland and the UK are directly involved in AI-related decision-making, but a significant portion is well-informed about AI initiatives. Governance remains a focus area for Ireland and UK respondents, with 46% still contemplating the best approach to AI governance. 82% of these respondents believe that establishing an effective AI cross-functional task force is crucial for becoming an augmented organisation. Worryingly, the study highlights that only 19% of C-suite executives in Ireland and the UK are actively adopting AI technologies with almost one in three organisations either having no AI implementations or have not started considering AI technologies. This is despite that fact that data readiness among UK&I respondents is relatively high, with only 1% unsure about their data readiness, 42% mostly ready, and 24% fully ready. "AI is a present-day necessity, and the pace of AI innovation and its adoption by competitors and consumers is accelerating," said Stephen Redmond, director, head of data analytics & AI at BearingPoint. "Our study indicates that organisations that fail to integrate AI effectively are at significant risk of falling behind competitors already leveraging AI to enhance productivity, drive innovation, and deliver superior market experiences. AI should be seen not just as a tool, but as a strategic asset that drives new value propositions and market differentiation." Despite prioritising training, findings from the BearingPoint study indicate that only 38% of organisations in Ireland and the UK have a strategy for adopting Al and managing the changes it brings. Four pillars for transitioning to an augmented organisation The study serves as a comprehensive guide for C-suite executives, detailing how to strategically organise and equip their organisations to harness the full potential of emerging technologies. It underscores the importance of acquiring new skills and implementing innovative processes to adopt AI at a competitive market pace. Four key pillars are central to transitioning to an augmented organisation. 1. Establishing effective AI governance: For C-suite executives, establishing AI governance is vital for becoming an augmented organisation, and nearly half of the organisations surveyed are still thinking about the best approach to governance and decision-making for AI. According to the study, cross-functional governance framework is essential to align AI initiatives with business objectives and ensure ethical use. It involves setting up a dedicated AI oversight committee to monitor and guide AI deployments across various departments. It also includes establishing clear policies and protocols to manage data privacy, security, and compliance, ensuring that AI applications are not only effective but also responsible and transparent. 1. Optimising A...

40% of population unaware of the digital euro, making Ireland the third least informed country

The digital euro has entered a two-year preparation phase which will lay the foundations for potentially issuing the digital euro across Europe. According to a new survey conducted by management and technology consultancy BearingPoint in seven countries across Europe, 40% of respondents in Ireland have not heard of the digital euro, a planned digital version of physical euro bank notes and coins. So, whilst knowledge of the digital euro is relatively widespread across Europe, in Ireland, further communication and education is required to ensure acceptance of the digital euro as a supplement to cash. According to official communications of the European Central Bank, the digital euro is not intended to replace cash but to complement it, which is also reflected in the survey results. On average, around 26% of respondents expect the digital euro to be used as a supplement to existing payment methods. Information on the digital euro is most pronounced in Austria, with only 27% of respondents having not heard of it. High awareness in Austria could be due to the intensive political discussion on the digital euro there. On the other hand, 43% of respondents in France had not heard of the digital euro. In the countries with the highest cash use, Austria and Germany, the expectation is that the digital euro will be used less frequently than cash. In Finland, the country with the lowest cash use, the digital euro is expected to be used more frequently than cash. Of the respondents aware of the digital euro, across all age groups, Irish respondents are the most likely to believe that it will replace cash. Expectations of the critical characteristics of the digital euro are consistent across countries, these being: fast, secure, and accepted everywhere, closely followed by availability at all times. Anonymity as a characteristic was by far the least important. Respondents said their preferred use of the digital euro would be for online shopping, with one in two in Ireland saying they would use it there. In all countries surveyed, the digital euro would also be used frequently in daily shopping, such as at the supermarket. The criteria of free to use and accepted everywhere 24/7 (online and offline) would encourage respondents to use the digital euro the most. Trust in data security is seen as a more important criterion for usage than a great user experience. Results of the survey show that the personal bank receives the highest trust for digital euro transaction data. With an average of 4% across all countries, very few respondents would want to entrust their transaction data to technology companies such as Apple, Google, or Amazon. Christian Bruck, Partner and Payments Expert at BearingPoint: "Cash is by far the most popular payment method in Europe. It is so high partly due to the fact that in uncertain times, cash is perceived as particularly familiar and secure. Cash remains highly valued, reflected in the strong majority favouring cash in the next five to ten years. It is interesting to note that, despite the differences in today's use of cash, an average of one in five people would use the digital euro several times a week. This underlines the potential of the digital euro. Gillian O'Sullivan, Partner and Ireland Country Lead at BearingPoint: "Although knowledge of the digital euro is now relatively widespread across Europe, Ireland is lagging with 40% of respondents in Ireland never having heard of it. The findings of our survey highlight that further communication and education is required in Ireland to ensure acceptance of the digital euro as a supplement to cash. In Germany (71%) and Austria (79%), cash use is significantly higher than in other European countries. Respondents from Switzerland (63%), Ireland (61%), the Netherlands (57%), and France (55%) also show a relatively high level of cash use but are well behind Germany and Austria. Finland has a significantly lower cash usage pattern at 43%. The popularity of cash is al...

During this episode, Dr. Sean McFate discusses his influential book, The New Rules of War. Sean describes how the Westphalian state system is changing, consequences for conventional war, the rise of mercenaries and international mega-corporations, and information operations. Plus, the Cognitive Crucible gets not only one–but two–Monty Python references. Research Question: Sean asks several questions worthy of examination. First, how can a democracy fight secretive wars without losing its democratic soul? Second, strategic culture can eclipse strategic IQ; so, how can a strong strategic culture be broken? 0:00 Intro.1:37 Start of interview.3:03 Francine's "origin story". She grew up in Chicago and graduated from Purdue in accounting but "she hated it." She began in internal audit at Chicago's Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust. She later worked with KPMG/BearingPoint in the early 1990s. She also worked at JP Morgan where she focused on Y2K risk. Post Sarbanes Oxley she worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP until 2006. She then pivoted as an investigative reporter and feature writer. At MarketWatch, and for The Wall Street Journal and Barron's, McKenna reported on public company accounting, fraud and financial investigations, and the potentially dubious financial reporting practices of pre-IPO companies. She also started teaching at different universities. She has now joined full-time as a Lecturer at University of Pennsylvania Wharton Business School.17:53 On Ernst & Young's $100 million penalty by the SEC for employees cheating on CPA ethics exams and misleading investigation. To put this case into context, it's important to understand KPMG's case from 2019 ($50 million penalty by the SEC). Note this teaching case study on the KPMG/PCAOB scandal.24:50 Criminal convictions in KPMG case.26:01 EY's role in misleading the investigation of the SEC.31:38 On KPMG receiving its largest UK fine (£14.4M) for providing false information about its audits of Carillion and Regenersis. On why the "Big 4 Audit Firms" are "Too Big to Fail."33:16 What's really going on with the Big 4  audit firms? Audit services vs consulting services. "When there is tension between professionalism and commercialism, [the latter] will always win out." "You cannot restrain the heartless except via enforcement."37:50 On lessons for directors in frauds of private companies. "I use Theranos as a warning case for students in accounting: it's the canary in the coalmine in case the audit profession doesn't evolve." There were three audit firms involved in the Theranos case: EY at the beginning but then walked away, then KPMG until they had a dispute about stock option valuations (staying only to do consulting), and PwC did forensic work winding down the company. None of them audited the firm, they only provided services. "They [the audit firms] made more money, with less liability, by providing other services [actively choosing not to provide auditing services.]" "Private companies avoiding going public [the deeper scrutiny] is the shape of things to come." How the JOBS Act stripped away some of the scrutiny over emerging growth companies [EGCs]. Some, like SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce, are in favor of this lighter regulatory approach.47:22 On whether unicorns require a stricter regulatory framework. "We are seeing this [laissez-faire] attitude to the max in the crypto industry."50:00 On whether Sarbanes Oxley had a negative effect on the US IPO market. "We should not have marginal/shady companies in the public markets." On the negative effect of relaxing the rules in the JOBS Act. "We should be talking about the quality of companies, not the quantity of listings."55:26 On the difference between valuations (in private companies) and marketcap (in public companies). "I'm a big believer in the power of short sellers and activist investors to highlight [price inefficiencies and fraud] because they put their money where their mouth is." "The SEC has been very disappointing in both Republican and Democratic administrations in terms of actually calling accounting fraud by its name." On the role of whistleblowers.01:04:02 On the rise (and increasing political polarization) of ESG. "I'm cynical towards it, firms are looking to get a piece of clients' wallets." "The trend first emerged in Europe with firms providing side audits like carbon emissions." "My head is tainted with the idea that it's all a big marketing ploy." The audit mandate in the proposed SEC's climate change disclosure rules. On the proxy proposals (like Exxon's) and greenwashing.01:10:28 - Three books that have greatly influenced her life: Siddartha, by Hermann Hesse (1922)The Road Less Traveled, by M. Scott Peck (1978)The Origins of Totalitarianism, by Hannah Arendt (1951)01:13:18 - Who were your mentors, and what did you learn from them? From her time at Continental Illinois:Peggy Jackson TurnerJudy Port01:15:03 - Are there any quotes you think of often or live your life by? "Der Mensch Tracht, un Gott Lacht (Man Plans, and God Laughs)" (Yiddish)"Morallity cannot be legislated, but behavior can be regulated. Judicial decrees may not change the heart, but they can restrain the heartless." Martin Luther King Jr.01:16:12 -  An unusual habit or an absurd thing that he loves: collecting metal objects.01:17:47 -  The living person she most admires: Judge Jed S. Guest Debbie Cameron, Build Consultant's newest Partner, and Build Consulting's Kyle Haines had an informal discussion on what the upcoming few years will probably bring to the nonprofit IT ecosystem, changes to expect and the value of change management in nonprofit IT projects. Their conversation also touches on the importance of planning for 3-5 years out instead of trying to plan for 10 years out when making a software selection, how best-of-breed models allow greater flexibility to pivot but require greater emphasis on keeping clean export-able data, and observes that being the planner and cheerleader for nonprofit tech projects complements being the planner and cheerleader of an active family. Debbie led the development of Build Consulting's change management practice before joining the leadership team. Prior to joining Build Consulting, Debbie led the multi-year constituent relationship management transformation at the World Wildlife Fund that brought together diverse stakeholders ranging from data scientists to relationship managers. Debbie began her career at Anderson Consulting in the Enterprise Technology practice and then worked for Bearingpoint as an Engagement Manager in the State, Local and Education practice. She is a graduate of Virginia Tech. Our Fireside Chats are designed for audiences with varied experiences with technology. In this Fireside Chat learn more about the value of change management in nonprofit IT tech projects and the leadership role Debbie Cameron will take on as she joins the team of Partners at Build Consulting.

Russ Berland is back on this episode of The Compliance Life to share how he uses creative communication to change compliance culture.  Changing Culture at BearingPoint Tom Fox credits Russ with being one of the first persons to come up with a compliance movie. Russ relates that the lack of an integrated culture was one of the biggest issues at BearingPoint in 2007. His goal was to build company culture, and expectations around the same. Research suggested that they should start with their training, so Russ and his team came up with the idea of a series of videos - a “mockumentary” - similar to The Office. The team gathered stories from employees, which became inspiration for the script.  The first series of videos about the fictional Agreva Group was a phenomenal success. Russ relates that the “magic for us was that because they were our own stories, the people at BearingPoint recognized them and empathized with them…” After each six minute episode, a senior official would talk about the policies that applied to the situation portrayed in the video, and what the characters should have done. Russ comments that the training was the talk of the company: people eagerly looked forward to the release of the next episode, and diagnostic surveys showed marked cultural change as a result. One of their employees even became a local celebrity from acting in the series. They subsequently created a column and a second series of videos. Tom comments that using the employees' stories not only made them more targeted and engaged in the series, but also allowed Russ to gather information. Their post-diagnostic surveys helped them to measure the effectiveness of the training. Russ adds that engaging the senior leadership to talk on the videos made them the mouthpiece for the culture they were trying to create, while setting the tone from the top.
