Short History Of...

Victory in Europe Day brought the curtain down on a horrific conflict that decimated a continent and upended the world. But the price of victory over fascism was impossibly high. Many millions had been killed, and vast areas of Europe had been all but destroyed. VE Day signalled the end of Nazi Germany, and yet the war on the Pacific Front was still raging, and Stalin was already tightening his grip on what would become the Eastern Bloc. Meanwhile, many of the countries that had joined the fight against Hitler were left broken, bankrupt, and lawless. So, what did it take for the war to finally end? How was news of Germany's surrender spread and received? And amid the devastation, how do the continent's citizens celebrate and look forward with optimism?  This is a Short History Of VE Day. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Chapter 1 What's Savage Continent Book by Keith LoweSavage Continent is a book written by Keith Lowe and published in 2012. The book offers a comprehensive account of Europe in the aftermath of World War II. It focuses on the period from 1944 to 1949, exploring the physical, political, and psychological ruins left behind by the war. Lowe examines the deep divisions, violence, and chaos that plagued the continent during this time, as countries and communities struggled to rebuild while dealing with the aftermath of Nazi occupation, mass displacements, ethnic cleansing, and vengeful violence. Savage Continent sheds light on lesser-known aspects of the post-war era and offers a poignant analysis of the long-lasting effects of war on societies and individuals.Chapter 2 Is Savage Continent Book A Good BookOpinions on whether a book is good can vary greatly depending on individual tastes and interests. However, "Savage Continent: Europe in the Aftermath of World War II" by Keith Lowe is generally well-regarded by both critics and readers. The book offers a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of the immediate aftermath of World War II in Europe, focusing on the social, political, and cultural consequences of the conflict. It delves into the widespread violence, displacement, and chaos experienced by the continent during this period. Many readers appreciate Lowe's thorough research, engaging writing style, and ability to unveil lesser-known stories and perspectives. However, it is important to note that the book's content can be quite graphic and disturbing, as it deals with the atrocities committed during the war and its aftermath. If you have a particular interest in this historical period and can handle graphic descriptions, "Savage Continent" is likely to be an informative and thought-provoking read.Chapter 3 Savage Continent Book by Keith Lowe Summary"Savage Continent: Europe in the Aftermath of World War II" is a book by Keith Lowe that examines the continent's tumultuous period between 1944 and 1950, immediately following the end of World War II. The book offers a comprehensive and often shocking account of the destruction, violence, and chaos that characterized the post-war era in Europe.Lowe begins by highlighting the immense devastation caused by the war, from the physical destruction of cities and infrastructure to the loss of life and displacement of millions. He explores the psychological and emotional trauma suffered by not only soldiers but also civilians who had endured years of occupation, bombings, and forced labor. The book delves into topics such as the mass rape and sexual violence inflicted upon women, the vengeful acts committed by both victorious and defeated nations, and the revenge taken against collaborators and perceived enemies. Lowe also examines the displacement and forced migration of millions of people, the challenge of rebuilding shattered economies and societies, and the rise of political extremism and nationalist movements. While Savage Continent paints a bleak picture of post-war Europe, it also highlights acts of compassion, solidarity, and resilience in the face of immense hardship. Lowe explores how individuals and communities rebuilt their lives, the efforts made to establish new systems of governance, and the beginning of the process of reconciliation between former enemies.Overall, "Savage Continent" offers a detailed and often disturbing account of the harsh reality faced by Europeans in the aftermath of World War II. It challenges many commonly held beliefs about the immediate post-war years and provides a deeper understanding of this complex period in European history. Chapter 4 Savage Continent Book...

Piše: Milan Vogel Bereta: Lidija Hartman in Jure Franko ”Spomeniki so vseh mogočih oblik in velikosti. V tej knjigi sem predstavil pomene in motive, ki se skrivajo za širokim naborom obeležij – ne le običajnih kipov, ampak tudi abstraktnih skulptur, slik, arhitekturnih objektov, muzejev in spominskih parkov, porušenih zgradb in porušenih vasi, koncentracijskih taborišč, pokopališč, grobnic in svetišč.” Tako angleški zgodovinar Keith Lowe, avtor, ki je slovenskim bralcem znan vsaj še po knjigah Podivjana celina in Strah in svoboda, strnjeno povzema vsebino in sporočilo odlično napisane knjige Ujetniki zgodovine. Kaj nam spomeniki drugi svetovni vojni povedo o zgodovini in o nas. Predstavitev petindvajsetih spomenikov in obeležij z vsega sveta v tej knjigi to nazorno kaže. Nikjer ni nobenega kipa, nobenih portretov ljudi, zamrznjenih v akciji.

During this episode, we discuss our time at the NCAA Convention. This was a historical meeting as the new NCAA Constitution was officially adopted during this convention. The new constitution contains language that supports student athletes' ability to profit from their name, image, and likeness. We are joined by our producer, Anthony Palmer, from Palm Tree Pod Co.During the convention, members were allowed to voice their opinions about the new constitution. Dr. Bill Fierfelder, President of Belmont Abbey College, voiced concern that the new constitution was rushed. Mads McKenna, a member of SAAC, expressed her support for the new constitution and added that she was pleased with the fact that student-athletes could now profit from their NIL. Betsy Mitchell, Athletic Director of Cal Tech, expressed her opposition to the new constitution and stated that the new constitution was revised to benefit a few members, rather than the majority of institution members. We interviewed a few amazing guests. We spoke with Keith Lowe from DV Sport about the POV of a parent of a student-athlete trying to navigate the NIL era. We sat down with Harrison Larner, a junior at Northwestern University and co-founder of 8 In The Box Productions, to discuss how student-athletes can promote themselves using visual media. We also spoke with Sylvia Cortes, a student-athlete from the University of Alabama at Huntsville and member of SAAC. She provided updates on SAAC and also the new NCAA Constitution. Our final guest was Andrew Trimble CEO of Kairos, a scheduling and communications platform. We discussed the demanding and ever-changing schedules of student-athletes.Wheeler also expressed his love of Subito sandwiches. We discuss our favorite recent nillies, including FSU women's soccer's apparel line, Notre Dame football's deal with Ikonic, and Raising Cane's proposed deal with Adonis Arms. In This Episode: VicTreeFi on Instagram | Facebook | LinkedIn | Website Name Image Likeness: Instagram

Humankind has always had the urge to memorialise, to make physical testaments to the past. There’s just one problem: when we carve a statue or put up a monument, it can wind up holding us hostage to bad history. In this extraordinary history book, Keith Lowe uses monuments from around the world to show how different countries have attempted to sculpt their history in the wake of the Second World War, and what these memorials reveal about their politics and national identity today. Amongst many questions, the book asks: What does Germany signal to today’s far right by choosing not to disclose the exact resting place of Hitler? How can a bronze statue of a young girl in Seoul cause mass controversy? What is Russia trying to prove and hide, still building victory monuments at a prolific rate for a war now seventy years over? As many around the world are questioning who and what we memorialise, Prisoners of History challenges our idea of national memory, history, and the enormous power of symbols in society today.

Why does the Second World War continue to have such a strong appeal for us? “It’s the fudging of the truth that’s much more important than the actual lies … mythology is more difficult to get to grips with.” In summer blockbusters and bestseller lists, on internet chat forums and national debates, World War II is a cultural touchstone for us. Decades on from Basil Fawlty’s famous “don’t mention the war” bit, this is the war we just can’t stop mentioning. In this episode, Natasha tells a somewhat appalled Simon about the time she had a dream she interviewed Hitler for Life & Faith, and also has a more serious conversation with British historian Keith Lowe, author of (among other things) The Fear and the Freedom: Why the Second World War Still Matters. They discuss good and evil, a war criminal who later repented, the antagonism that many Holocaust survivors faced after the war, and the religious revival that followed in its wake.  And, of course, whether comparisons between the Second World War and Covid are valid. “People want to be a part of something bigger than themselves, they want to part of a community - because that’s what they felt during the war.” --- Buy Keith’s book, The Fear and the Freedom Read Natasha’s article, “What do the stories we tell about the Second World War say about us?”

Brezzakonje, bolezen, lakota in smrt vsepovsod, torej. Ta uspeh pisateljica v pomembni meri dolguje prav Lazarjevim ženskam. O čem torej govori njen roman? – Govori o prekletstvu genialnosti, o krhkosti medčloveških odnosov in o magični moči urejenega, toplega doma.
