Happy Thursday everyone, this is Garrison Hardie with your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief for Thursday, July 28th, 2022. Columbia University fencer, Sylvie Binder, will be the Ivy League's pick. The award is meant to honor women student-athletes who have "distinguished themselves in their community, in athletics and in academics throughout their college career." Binder, a senior from Armonk, New York, won the NCAA Fencing Championship in 2019. Binder was selected over Thomas, whose eligibility was hotly contested as Thomas is biological male who identifies as a woman and began transition in 2019. Thomas swam for the men’s swim team representing the University of Pennsylvania for three seasons before transitioning to compete against female swimmers, breaking records and winning championships in the women's division. Riley Gaines, an SEC champion swimmer who competed against Thomas at the NCAA Championships, said the male nomination as "Woman of the Year" was "another slap in the face to women," adding that the NCAA has now "made this award worthless." The University of Pennsylvania nominated both Thomas and tennis player Iuliia Bryzgalova for NCAA Woman of the Year in July. The NCAA website states that a school may nominate two individuals for the award if one of the two nominees is a "student-athlete of color or international student-athlete." The announcement on Monday narrowed down the 577 students nominated to 151 female athletes. The Woman of the Year Selection Committee is set to select 10 nominees from each division and the top 30 will be announced in October, with the winner announced in January at the NCAA Convention in San Antonio. Moving on… Hey California! That’s a place that exists… California Democrats Move to Make State a 'Sanctuary' for Child Sex Change Surgery https://neonnettle.com/news/19709-california-democrats-move-to-make-state-a-sanctuary-for-child-sex-change-surgery "Woke" lawmakers have introduced a bill to create a safe haven for doctors to perform operations on kids to remove or alter their genitals. The bill was introduced by Democratic California State Sen. Scott Wiener. As Neon Nettle has previously reported, Wiener successfully campaigned to legalize "gay sex" with minors in the state. Weiner's latest bill would block courts from enforcing out-of-state court orders revoking custody for parents who allowed their children to get illegal sex changes. The measure would also weaken parental rights of those who aren’t supportive of sex changes for their kids, giving "woke" teachers and other officials more powers to put children through life-changing transgender treatments without the need for family approval or knowledge. The proposal comes as several states move to restrict “gender-affirming care,” for children, which includes socially transitioning, puberty-blocking drugs, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries. Texas is treating these procedures as a form of child abuse under existing state laws, Alabama has banned the procedures for minors and Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is making an administration-wide push to ban child sex-change procedures.Wiener characterized the bill as an effort to grant legal protections to transgender minors and their parents, noting that the bill blocks California courts from enforcing out-of-state subpoenas for parents who break state laws banning child sex-change treatments. The legislation also makes the enforcement of out-of-state arrest warrants for violations of child sex-change bans the lowest law enforcement priority. A spokeswoman for parental rights group Family Watch International told the Daily Caller News Foundation how the law might work in practice. If a mother in Texas believes her daughter is actually a boy and seeks a double mastectomy for her, her doctor may alert the authorities that the child is at risk for permanently disfiguring surgery, she explained. If the mother flees to California with the child to get the surgery, California would currently be required to comply with court orders from Texas to have the child returned to the state, according to the spokeswoman. Wiener’s bill would block California courts from complying with Texas’s child custody orders when it comes to parents giving their children sex changes, she explained. My goodness that is wicked… California is just going to be heaping judgement on itself and our nation by these disgusting practices. Let’s shift our eyes over seas now… https://dailycaller.com/2022/07/27/us-military-prep-war-pelosi-taiwan/ US Military To Prep For War If Pelosi Goes To Taiwan: REPORT The U.S. military is readying for possible conflict in the Pacific ahead of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s possible trip to Taiwan in August, according to The Associated Press. The Pentagon will escalate troop movements and security measures in the Pacific if Pelosi follows through with her planned Taiwan visit. China likely would not attack Pelosi’s plane directly, officials familiar with the matter told the AP, but senior officials worry that her presence could inflame existing tensions between the U.S. and China over Taiwan. Officials declined to provide specifics but said measures could include fighter jets, ships and surveillance equipment to create redundant shields around Pelosi. China threatened to impose a no-fly zone over Taiwan if Pelosi visits and has dispatched warplanes into Taiwan’s claimed air defense identification zone, CNN reported, as a possible countermeasure. Pelosi would be the highest-ranking elected official to visit Taiwan in a quarter century, according to the AP. While enhanced security is typical of any high-level official visit to a foreign country, the precautions would go beyond those taken for trips to less risky destinations. Tensions between the U.S. and China have escalated in recent months over conflict related to Taiwan, an independently-governed country that China perceives as part of the mainland. Milley said Sunday that the number of dangerous interceptions between U.S. and Chinese forces in the South Pacific has escalated in 2022, and China has used unusually strong language opposing the U.S. ahead of Pelosi’s possible visit, Financial Times reported Saturday, citing six people with direct knowledge of the warnings. China confirmed prior threats of possible military action should House Speaker Nancy Pelosi follow through on Monday. “If the US side insists on making the visit, the Chinese side will take firm and strong measures to safeguard our sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Zhao Lijian said. In exchange, Russia will send over Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan… Their deal sounds cooler. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Wednesday that the United States made a "substantial" proposal to Russia to bring home wrongfully detained WNBA star Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan, who is also serving a prison sentence in Russia. CNN reported that the U.S. offered Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer nicknamed "The Merchant of Death," for the prisoner swap. A prisoner swap freed former U.S. Marine Trevor Reed from a Russian penal colony in April. Blinken added he would engage with Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. It was the first public acknowledgement of a deal that could involve a prisoner swap or addressing the sanctions placed on the country after it invaded Ukraine. “My hope would be that in speaking to Foreign Minister Lavrov, I can advance the efforts to bring them home,” Blinken said. Blinken said President Joe Biden has been directly involved in the negotiations and he signed off on the offer to Moscow. This has been your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief. During this episode, we discuss our time at the NCAA Convention. This was a historical meeting as the new NCAA Constitution was officially adopted during this convention. The new constitution contains language that supports student athletes' ability to profit from their name, image, and likeness. We are joined by our producer, Anthony Palmer, from Palm Tree Pod Co.During the convention, members were allowed to voice their opinions about the new constitution. Dr. Bill Fierfelder, President of Belmont Abbey College, voiced concern that the new constitution was rushed. Mads McKenna, a member of SAAC, expressed her support for the new constitution and added that she was pleased with the fact that student-athletes could now profit from their NIL. Betsy Mitchell, Athletic Director of Cal Tech, expressed her opposition to the new constitution and stated that the new constitution was revised to benefit a few members, rather than the majority of institution members. We interviewed a few amazing guests. We spoke with Keith Lowe from DV Sport about the POV of a parent of a student-athlete trying to navigate the NIL era. We sat down with Harrison Larner, a junior at Northwestern University and co-founder of 8 In The Box Productions, to discuss how student-athletes can promote themselves using visual media. We also spoke with Sylvia Cortes, a student-athlete from the University of Alabama at Huntsville and member of SAAC. She provided updates on SAAC and also the new NCAA Constitution. Our final guest was Andrew Trimble CEO of Kairos, a scheduling and communications platform. We discussed the demanding and ever-changing schedules of student-athletes.Wheeler also expressed his love of Subito sandwiches. We discuss our favorite recent nillies, including FSU women's soccer's apparel line, Notre Dame football's deal with Ikonic, and Raising Cane's proposed deal with Adonis Arms. The annual NCAA Convention is this week and it is one of the most important gatherings of Association membership in the modern history of the NCAA. Dan Schumacher, Director of Athletics at UW-Eau Claire, visits 1.Question Podcast co-host @TaiMBrown at the 2018 NCAA Convention. Schumacher, currently in his third AD job, discusses doing your best due diligence to understand the issues you may face when taking on a new leadership role. He points out that problems are usually deeper than the eye can see.
@TaiMBrown visits with Julie Soriero, Director of Athletics at MIT, during the 2018 NCAA Convention. Soriero, a former coach and longtime administrator, discusses the aspects of positioning oneself for career advancement. The 2018 NCAA President's Pat Summit Award winner also touches on the topic of women in leadership positions within athletics.
At the NCAA Convention this past January, Patti Phillips caught up with Carla Williams, the director of athletics at the University of Virginia, and the first female African-American athletics director to lead a Power Five Conference institution – which is incredible! During her time as a standout women’s basketball student-athlete at the University of Georgia, Carla volunteered in the athletics department and her career in administration was born. She went on to be an assistant coach at Georgia during one of the most successful periods in women's basketball history (including a run for the national championship!). It’s truly fascinating that Carla knew she wanted to transition to athletic administration while she was coaching and used this platform as an opportunity to learn as much as she could about the many angles of administration, which became a reoccurring theme in Carla’s journey – be a lifelong learner! Carla is an incredibly hard worker, whose advice is "be the best at your job.” This is what we tell all of you, our members, at our summer institutes and at Convention. You have to be a rock star, and Carla absolutely is. Head to womenleadersincollegesports.org for more about us and to become a member! Tai Brown talks with Dr. Brian Hainline at the 2018 NCAA Convention. Dr. Hainline, Chief Medical Officer for the NCAA, addresses the medical concerns that are currently on the forefront of the minds of all who are involved with Student-Athletes. The biggest issue he identifies is mental health. Hainline discusses best practices provided by the NCAA, including a simple teaching module which touches on the ABCs of mental health, which can be found at www.ncaa.org/ssi
Tai Brown sets up shop at the 2018 NCAA Convention and visits with Rob Carolla, Director of Communications at College Football's 150th Anniversary. Carolla discusses the organization designed to spearhead college football's sesquicentennial celebration. The NCAA and the College Football Playoff are among the parties involved.
Micah and Rex recap the 2018 NCAA Convention, including NCAA President Mark Emmert’s State of the NCAA address and the new legislation enacted. They also give their own State of the NCAA address. Link to the new legislation enacted.

It is already the midway point of January. In a month's time, we will be looking at conference tournaments and discussing who has a chance to make the NCAA tournaments. However, there is still a lot of basketball to be played and many teams are starting to take the turn into the second half of conference play. On Thursday's edition of Hoopsville, Dave will chat with a number of guests to get a landscape of where things are in Division III. The conversation will include checking in at the NCAA Convention where legislation will be voted on by DIII members and conferences on whether to start the season a week earlier. Dave then talks to some of the hotter teams in the country. Two women's programs (ranked and unranked) who are leading their respective conferences and looking to build on recent success. Also two men's programs one of which is not in the spotlight as much as they traditionally are along with a program we haven't talked to in a number of years. This week's WBCA Center Court will feature a women's coach who is doing what she can to spread the word about women's basketball including giving more of her time to make sure her colleagues are taken care of and heard. Hoopsville is presented by D3hoops.com and airs from the WBCA/NABC Studio. You can send your questions to the show and have them featured on the Hoopsville Mailbag segment. Email them to hoopsville@d3hoops.com. Guests include (in order of appearance): - James Wagner, CSAC Assistant Commissioner - Bobby Hurley, Stevens men's coach - Kris Huffman, No. 9 DePauw women's coach - Polly Thomason, Texas-Dallas women's coach (WBCA Center Court) - Matt Logie, No. 7 Whitworth men's coach - Ashlee Rogers, Marymount women's coach
On almost any night you can expect there is something to talk about in Division III basketball. From upsets to dominating results, when thousands of games are being played there never is a moment that goes by that shouldn't be discussed. That's what we hope to do on Hoopsville every show. Sunday night is no different. There are plenty of upsets to discuss along with figuring out just exactly who are the best teams in the country. Sometimes that discussion means talking to those who won, those who lost, and those who are helping determine conference races. On Sunday's show, Dave talks to several teams who are in the conversation around the country. From a men's team who ended a 72-game conference winnings streak to another men's squad whose undefeated conference run ended. Also, a women's squad who is already having the best season in four years and another being led by a man who has overcome more than most do and trying to lead by examble by staying focused despite his battled with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Dave will also update a few items voted on this week at the NCAA Convention that will affect basketball starting next season. You can watch Hoopsville live in the video player above or watch it on Facebook Live (simulcast). If you missed the show live, you can watch the video On Demand in the same manner or listen to or download the podcast located on the right side (available when the show concludes). Don't forget to contribute to the new "Hoopsville Mailbag" segment. Email questions you may have to hoopsville@d3hoops.com. Dave will answer them on air tonight or on a future show. Guests scheduled to appear (in order of appearance): - Michael Coppolino, Mount St. Mary women's head coach - Paul Culpo, Castleton men's coach - Derek James, MacMurray women's coach - WBCA Center Court - Ryan Kane, Ripon men's coach - Tom Palombo, Guilford men's coach
In every season there are surprises. Teams who rise to the top at some point making everyone take a second look at what is going on. For most, it is a matter of making sure they are still around come the midway part of the season. Are they still for real? On Thursday's night's Hoopsville, Dave chatted with teams who clearly aren't just start-to-the-season flash-in-the-pans. Some conference races are not shaping up how many expected when the season began and for these squads they are perfectly fine with that. Don't forget Thursdya's coverage looked primarily at the East, Mid-Atlantic, Great Lakes, and West Regions, but we also included taking a look at this week's NCAA Convention and other news around Division III basketball. If you missed Hoopsville when it aired live, you watch (above) On Demand or listen (or download) the podcasts (available when the show concludes). Don't forget to contribute to the new "Hoopsville Mailbag" segment. Email questions you may have to hoopsville@d3hoops.com. Dave will answer them on air tonight or on a future show. Guests scheduled to appear (in order of appearance): - Mike Miller, Messiah women's head coach - Chris Downs, St. Lawrence men's head coach - Jon Miller, Hanover men's head coach - Chris Novak, Bethel men's head coach

Kevin is also the founder of Fieldhouse Leadership, raising the capacity of leaders in collegiate athletics. Oklahoma City is home for Kevin along with his wife and three boys. Interview Questions: (Breaking News on NLRB instruction to private colleges re: social media) They cannot restrict their student-athletes from social media Cannot restrict their access to the media Referred to the student-athletes as employees – this is BIG This reversed policies that schools have which prevent and punish student-athletes for certain social media posts or even banning social media altogether revents requirements of student-athletes to turn over login usernames and passwords Interesting moving forward re: employment status Schools usually have these guidelines for a good reason; they are typically looking to help keep the student-athletes out of trouble Why don't you take a few minutes and take our audience into your journey, and how you got where you are today. Background in healthcare staffing Became frustrated with corporate America Noticed as the industry was changing how his colleagues spent a ton of time on Facebook; saw potential in using Facebook for a recruiting tool within their company; it worked! Got hooked on Twitter immediately Left his job and started his own healthcare staffing company; it did not go well On the side, was doing social media consulting Noticed how student-athletes were having a tough time using social media; always getting in trouble Finally a friend told him he should go fix it Went for it five years ago without a single college athletics contact Now been on over 100 campuses; trains coaches and staff in addition to the student-athletes in all student-athletes KEY: not just learning how not to make mistakes on social media, but rather how can you use it for your benefit What is Fieldhouse Media and Fieldhouse Leadership, and what do you do on a day-to-day basis? FieldHouse Media – Social media firm; how/why to use social media well; to stop using it inappropriately does not mean they are using it well FieldHouse Leadership – was an email service at the start; a way to challenge/encourage athletic department administrators Jeremie Kubicek – Giant Worldwide Be a leader people want to follow What are the most common leadership issues university athletic departments are struggling with? Pioneer Culture/Leader – futurist; strategic thinker; military style thinker; visionaries; the downside is it can be win-at-all-costs; can be a dominating personality and can shut other voices out; many people under this leadership will feel misunderstood; so the goal may be achieved, but at too high a cost Insecurity – people constantly feel like they need to prove themselves to someone; lots of comparison to others; leads to burnout; What have you found to be the most effective techniques or tools to help them work through those issues? Lots of visual tools Support Challenge Matrix [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="792"] (Support Challenge Matrix from FieldHouse Leadership and GiANT Worldwide)[/caption] What kind of culture are you creating? Leave the room and have your staff place you. Most are Dominator or Protector Under stress, culture trumps strategy all day every day; important to develop culture and challenge in good times, it will last through stressful times as well Talk about the five leadership voices. What are those and why are they important? Builds off of Myers-Briggs; simplifies Pioneer – futurist/military/strategic Nurturer – caretaker/champion relational harmony/impact on people Guardian – champion of logic/systems; is the structure and money there to execute? Is this even necessary? Creative – champion of innovation/can see opportunities and threats/struggle with status quo/can often have a hard time explaining what's in their head Connector – Champion of relationships/collaboration/branding/passionate salesperson If you can understand you natural voice and where you struggle, it will help you communicate with others We need every voice! 73% of people are nurturers are guardians; means most people don't want to move forward; keep things as they are; that has to factor in when leading people through change and into the future You tweeted recently that “too many leaders do a 180 once they are in a position of power.” What do you mean by that and how can we prevent it? When we're trying to move up the ladder, we have humility and want to serve; we realize we have to go above/beyond to get to the next step When we get there, now we want to be served; now we have power and we're for ourselves instead Leaders burnout or undermine their positions because of this People don't want to follow leaders who are for themselves Book recommendation: Ego is the Enemy by Ryan Holiday What advice do you have for young professionals who are striving to be better leaders or maybe even trying to get that first opportunity to lead? Lead now! Don't wait for a title! Lead yourself; be the leader now that you would want Treat people around you the way you would as the leader Prohibition v. inhibition: who is stopping you from leading now? How do you approach leadership within your family? How, if at all, does it differ from the way you lead in your company? Being intentional Leadership is not a professional thing; it's not something you leave at the office when you come home to your role as husband/wife/father/mother Have a vision for how you want your family and your kids to be, and put structures in place to make that happen; hope is not a strategy What habits have been key to your success? Networking – in the best sense of the word; he likes to meet people and help people; wanting to genuinely serve people; has served him well Scheduling detail time in the day – not a strength, so something that must be addressed with structure Where can people go to learn more about you or Fieldhouse Media/Leadership? @kevindeshazo on Twitter @fieldhousemedia @fieldhousedaily Fieldhousemedia.net Fieldhouseleadership.co Fivevoices.com (free assessment) kevin@fieldhousemedia.net
