We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, and CONCACAF Champions Cup chat, and we're joined by AFTN writer Felipe Vallejo to do it all this episode. The Whitecaps finally played their first competitive game of 2025, and while the end result of the Champions Cup clash with Saprissa wasn't what they were hoping for down in Costa Rica, there were a lot of positives and and an away goal to take from the tie. We delve into the match, look ahead to the MLS season opener in Portland and hear from 'Caps coach Jesper Sorensen and Timbers boss Phil Neville. As the new MLS season gets underway, we preview what is shaping up to be an interesting and unpredictable Western Conference, with some clear standout teams, some movers and shakers, and some teams that we just don't know what to expect from them yet this season. We cast our eyes over the Whitecaps' 14 Western rivals and bring you a special collaboration piece we did previewing Vancouver themselves on the Soccerwise podcast. All of this, plus former Whitecaps captain Kendall Waston runs through our infamous food segments, Pop Will Eat Itself continue their residency as our Album of the Month and feature again in this episode's Wavelength, there's another Britpop song, and we pay tribute to the recently departed Jam drummer Rick Butler. We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, and CONCACAF Champions Cup chat and interviews. The wait is almost over, with the first competitive matches of the season coming up thick and fast this week for the Whitecaps in both league and cup action. The 'Caps have added two players to bolster their roster, with another key piece, experienced Mexican forward Daniel Rios, set to join on loan for the season any day now. Are the team ready to go? We chat with 'Caps coach Jesper Sorensen and ask just that, plus talk tactics, transfers, and more in the first of three one-on-one interviews this episode. Our feature interview is spread over two parts, as we sit down with former Whitecaps captain Kendall Waston in an extensive 50-minute interview to chat about his time in Vancouver, his love for the city, his successes here, the truth about his controversial departure, his footballing career and journey, playing at two World Cups, and now facing his former side in Champions Cup action. As if all of those interviews weren't enough, we bring you a third one this episode as we chat with new Whitecaps winger Emmanuel Sabbi for the first time to talk about his move to Vancouver and MLS, his footballing journey so far, what he brings to the team, going up against Jesper Sorensen's sides in Denmark, does he fancy a chocolate digestive, and more. All of this, plus Pop Will Eat Itself continue their residency as our Album of the Month and feature in this episode's Wavelength, there's another Britpop song, a prog rock number to explain a few things, and it's our final Hot Chocolate Boy of the year. We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps and Canadian soccer chat. The Whitecaps' owners dropped the bombshell announcement last week that the club were up for sale. That's naturally led to a lot of questions, concerns, worry, and more for supporters. We're joined by Harjeet Johal to delve into a lot of those questions in this episode, including will the team stay in Vancouver, who might the new owners be, does the lack of their own stadium and tangible assets affect things, what does it mean for the search for a new head coach and more. Plus we hear some thoughts from Whitecaps CEO Axel Schuster about the sale. In happier Whitecaps news, we look at the draw for them and the other Canadian teams in the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup and Canadian Championship, which has thrown up some pre-Christmas crackers for the season to come. Welcome back to another episode of the Third Sub Podcast presented by Macey's Sports! In this episode, Alex and Sam are back, as usual, this time to chat all things awards in a special edition of the show. To start, they talk about one award that a team brought back lately, and that's the Canadian Premier League's North Star Shield, which Langford's Pacific FC won for the first time on Sunday. Despite facing off against the x2 CPL champions, Forge, away, Pacific stood strong and took care of business in the final, and they break that down in this episode. After that, they look at what this win means both for Pacific, as well as the league as a whole, as it changes the landscape of the CPL as teams get set for their 4th season of competition in 2022. Then, they shift their attention over to the other team in BC, the Vancouver Whitecaps, breaking down their latest roster moves, seeing what they could mean for the 'Caps team this offseason. Continuing that, they then dive into a yearly tradition on the show - their 2021 end-of-year awards, as they give out some hardware after a year to remember for the Whitecaps. The awards up for grabs include: MVP Rookie of the Year Unsung Hero Defender of the Year Shea Salinas Departure of the Year Robert Earnshaw Third Sub of the Year Eric Hassli Goal of the Year Alphonso Davies most promising player Kendall Waston most improved player Game of the Year Lastly, but most certainly not least, they look at the news that the Whitecaps will be getting a 2nd team back (sort of), thanks to the creation of MLS Next Pro, the newest MLS U23 reserve league, giving teams like the 'Caps another option to give youngsters minutes. We look back at the emotional day that was but also the frustration that was left behind with the final standings that saw the 'Caps finish just two points, and one win, away from a playoff spot. How close were Vancouver in reality and does the squad need a complete rebuild or build around a current core when the new manager comes in? We look at all that and more, and ponder which other players we may have seen for the last time. We also sit down with Alphonso Davies to talk about his three years with the Whitecaps and relive some memories with him of his time in Vancouver. Plus we chat with Jordon Mutch about the ups and downs of his first season in MLS and hear from young homegrown player Simon Colyn after his MLS debut. Here's the full episode rundown of the main segments from the show:03.15: Vancouver Whitecaps chat - the Portland game, frustrations at just missing playoffs, pressure on new coach, what excites fans for next year54.32: Alphonso Davies interview and discussion77.50: Which players will be back, including Kendall Waston chat86.21: Jordon Mutch interview and discussion95.47: Simon Colyn scrum and young player discussion102.35: Wavelength - Los Campesinos - Every Defeat A Divorce (Three Lions)109.40: BC Soccerweb headlines - a look at some stories from around the football world

It's been an eventful week for Vancouver Whitecaps, albeit not the kind of headlines the club would be hoping they'd be making at this point of the season. Carl Robinson's departure was a look to the future for the 'Caps, but if anyone thought it was going to have an immediate impact on the present, Saturday's loss to the LA Galaxy quickly dispelled those thoughts. We look back on the week that was, talking some more about Robbo's release and who the prime candidates are to take over from him. Marc Dos Santos may be the standout name at the top of many people's lists, but who else is in the frame? And what identity will that see the 'Caps with moving forward? We also pick over the bones of the loss in LA, hear from both interim head coaches, and bring you Zlatan Ibrahimovic's view on Alphonso Davies heading to Bayern Munich. The playoffs are still a mathematical possibility, but it's one tricky equation to make that happen. All this, plus we look at what Robbo's departure will mean to some of the current squad, play you Kendall Waston's thoughts on it all, and English punk poet Patrik Fitzgerald features in this week's Wavelength. From the highs of Portland to the lows of Toronto. It had been a busy and mixed few days for Vancouver Whitecaps. A lot of ups and a lot of downs, so it was perhaps only expected that we got both of those in the 'Caps 2-2 draw with New York Red Bulls on Saturday. Depending on your glass half full/empty attitude to the 'Caps this season, this was either a battling point against one of the best teams in MLS this year, or two crucial points blown by an avoidable late goal. We take a look back at the match and hear from both head coaches. Coming out of the draw, and with the West looking tight but also close to getting away from the Whitecaps, we look a bit further ahead and look at the future of some players and coaches, and look yet again at the team's current defensive woes. All this, plus we hear from Tim Parker on his return to B.C. Vancouver Whitecaps must be wishing that the World Cup "break" was still going on. I know we do! Two defeats in two matches against two lowly teams has derailed all the good work done before the break and put the Whitecaps playoff hopes very much in trouble as they slip further behind in the points per game standings. We look back at Vancouver's Canada Day defeat at home to Colorado Rapids. What went wrong? How much of it was on the 'Caps and how much was down to the play of the visitors? And where does the team go from here? We also hear from both head coaches, Colorado's Anthony Hudson and Vancouver's Carl Robinson, plus we speak with Tim Howard, who had a lot to say about Vancouver fans and MLS security after the game. We also look back at what came out of the Whitecaps Town Hall meeting midweek and chat about a fantastic week of World Cup action and what lies ahead. Vancouver Whitecaps are only two more draws away from equaling the MLS record of six straight games sharing the points. Three more and they set a new record. Come on boys, you can do it. Let's go out there and make some history! There's every chance they'll inch closer to it on Friday when they travel to the Rocky Mountain state, not for chocolate covered cravings but to take on Colorado Rapids in MLS action. The Rapids are bad this year. If the Whitecaps can't beat them, do they deserve to even make it to the playoffs? Joe, Nick, and Gideon ponder that question, plus look at the dangers Colorado pose to the Vancouver defence, and the dangers Tim Howard poses to his own one. Who will win the golden ticket in this week's Whitecaps rotation lottery? Has Kei Kamara put his misses behind him or will we see him drop to the bench this week? And who steps up to fill Kendall Waston's huge shoes in the centre of the 'Caps defence? All this plus Do You Know Who I Am? and our prediction game in our latest episode. Have a listen!

Moving on to Canada, we hear from an injured Whitecap who sadly can't be at the Gold Cup with Canada this summer, David Edgar, [13:37] who chats with us about his injury, when we might see him back on the pitch, life as a colour commentator, the Gold Cup, and the Canadian Premier League. Four days, two matches, two different competitions, two defeats. That's been Vancouver Whitecaps' week, but the performances and circumstances of the games against San Jose Earthquakes and Tigres in the 'Volcano' were very different natural disasters. The 'Caps battled hard against a much better Tigres side in Mexico on Tuesday night, coming away with just a two goal deficit and are still very much in their CONCACAF Champions League semi-final. We look back at the game, the performances, and the strange feeling of coming away from a game that we expected the team to do much worse in but being disappointed with how things ultimately played out. 'Caps coach Carl Robinson gave us a call just before he headed home from Mexico to chat about the game and what may lie in store in the second leg (00:16:23 mark). There were some good defensive displays in Mexico, especially from Kendall Waston and David Ousted. But where was that in San Jose? Can they produce that every week in MLS? San Jose was a mess. We look at the great start, the turning point of Ousted's sending off, and the subsequent defensive collapse, posing the question what future does Kekuta Manneh have with this team if he can't add a better defensive side to his game and what could the 'Caps get for him if they decided to put him up for a trade? Our player interview this week is with one of the Whitecaps most recent additions, Brek Shea (00:49:48). We sit down with Brek to talk about his career, moving to Vancouver, and life off the pitch. We found it an interesting chat and we're sure you will too. And there's still time to bring you Tim Parker's footballing bucket list (01:16:17). Have a listen.

June is very much a feast of football. There's the Euros, Copa America, the Canadian Championship, MLS and USL matches to enjoy. So many games to watch, so little time. We cover all those competitions in our latest podcast and we kick things off with Vancouver Whitecaps. They've got it all to do in their semi-final second leg against Ottawa Fury, heading in to the game with a two goal deficit on the back of a pretty horrible performance for the most part. We hear from 'Caps coach Carl Robinson, who tells us what winning the Voyageurs Cup meant and means to him and the club, and we chat with one of the Whitecaps who came away with praise from last week's loss, debutant centre back Cole Seiler, about that game, making his first team debut, his own development and the USL season so far. There's a lot of Vancouver connections with the Ottawa side and one of them is current Fury goalkeeping coach, and former Whitecaps NASL 'keeper and Soccer Bowl winner, Bruce Grobbelaar. We dig into the AFTN vaults for our chat with Bruce from back in 2012. It may be four years old, and things may have changed for him, but it's a fascinating chat with the legend and well worth hearing again as he talks about his time in Vancouver, Liverpool and Zimbabwe and we look at everything from his wobbly legs to his European success and Hillsborough. And there's still time to look at Kendall Waston's sending off at Copa America and ahead to the Euros, which get underway this week. Carl Robinson will be cheering on Wales and he chats about what qualifying for their first major tournament since 1958 means for the country and the massive steps Wales have taken to improve the game there. Canada (and Scotland) take note! There's a lot of chat to be had, so have a listen!

Another Saturday, another Vancouver Whitecaps sending off, another game where Carl Robinson and everyone else is sick of talking about referees, oh and a second half fight back to claim a point. It was an eventful game against a managerless Houston Dynamo side. We pick over the bones, then throw them at referee Drew Fischer, as we look back over the main talking points from the match - the goals, the defensive breakdowns, the world class saves, the red cards. So much to say, so little time. We hear from both coaches, Vancouver's Carl Robinson and Houston caretaker Wade Barrett, about those talking points and venture into the Dynamo dressing room to hear from goalscorer DaMarcus Beasley, goalkeeper Tyler Deric and defender Sheanon Williams about Houston's turbulent week and what the team needs to do to start climbing the table. And there's still time to hear from Kendall Waston about his red card last week in Portland, look at the Whitecaps' disciplinary problems, the CONCACAF Champions League draw, the Crystal Palace friendly and what the line-up might look like in this week's Canadian Championship first leg in Ottawa. There's a lot of chat to be had, so have a listen!

The hours are slowly, very slowly, ticking down until Sunday's Western Conference semi-final second leg between Vancouver Whitecaps and Portland Timbers. So let AFTN help you kill some time while you're waiting for kick off with all the pregame build up you need for the clash between the Cascadian rivals. We hear from both coaches, Vancouver's Carl Robinson and Portland's Caleb Porter, ahead of the game. What did they learn from last week's first leg? Who's fit and ready to go? And can there be any surprises between two teams that know each other so well? Robbo also chats to us about the excitement of knockout Cup ties throughout his career and shares his thoughts on two legged semi-final series. One of the men who looks fit, ready and raring to go is Whitecaps captain Pedro Morales and he updates us on how he's feeling with less than two days to go. But one player who is definitely ruled out of Sunday's game is Vancouver centre back Pa Modou Kah. We sit down with the Gambian for a lengthy chat about his first season with the 'Caps and his current injury status. Kah talks about making the move and settling into Vancouver, his fellow centre backs Kendall Waston and Tim Parker, what he brings to the locker rooms, his recent gift of rings to all staff, his future plans and more.
