We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, and CONCACAF Champions Cup chat, and we're joined by AFTN writer Felipe Vallejo again to do it all this episode. Whitecaps CEO and Sporting Director Axel Schuster held a media roundtable on Wednesday. As the new MLS season gets underway, we preview what is shaping up to be an interesting and unpredictable Western Conference, with some clear standout teams, some movers and shakers, and some teams that we just don't know what to expect from them yet this season. Raymond Watts in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.pigindustries.com/ Following hot on the heels of his new album ‘Red Room' (released in May 2024), industrial rock mainstay Raymond Watts aka PIG has today reissued a fully remastered version of his seminal mid-‘90s album ‘Sinsation' via Metropolis Records (CD, digital) and Armalyte Industries (deluxe 2xLP vinyl). Out of print for almost three decades, it makes a timely reappearance just ahead of a North American tour.'Sinsation' was originally released in 1995 on Nothing Records, the label established by Nine Inch Nails kingpin Trent Reznor, and not long after PIG had opened for NIN at a number of shows. Nothing was an influential and commercially successful label with a cult underground following that also issued records by Marilyn Manson, Squarepusher, Autechre, Meat Beat Manifesto, Pop Will Eat Itself, Einstürzende Neubauten and Plaid, as well as NIN themselves.

Interview by Kris PetersWhat do you do as you near the twilight of an illustrious music career?Set course for Australia, apparently! After pushing 40 years in the music industry, English alternative rock outfit Pop Will Eat Itself have finally decided to bring their pasty white legs Down Under for the first show of their careers on our shores in February and March of next year. The loveable poms have promised to treat their neglected fans to a set of Greatest Hits, and, just to soften the blow, have invited UK indie/dance/rock outfit Jesus Jones to share in the fun with them.It is an upbeat and lively union of bands, with Jesus Jones frontman Mike Edwards stopping in for a chat with HEAVY to get us acquainted. We start by asking what delights Jesus Jones have in store for their Australian fans."You've put me on the spot there," he laughed. "Delights? Don't know if it's delights. It makes it sound like we should be bringing Frankincense and Myrrh (laughs). I was gonna say the same thing that we normally do, but it's not quite right… My strapline for this tour is 'all of the energy you're used to seeing, all the songs you wanna hear, but this time played better than they were in the past. How's that?"In reality, either band could have come over here by themselves and pulled decent crowds around the country, so we quiz Mike as to why they chose to come together."They're a band that we have a lot of affinity with," he replied. "We've played with them in various guises before and done tours with them. Great bunch of guys, easy to get on with, plus, more than anything else, do you want to go to Australia? Hell yes!"In the full interview, Mike tells us what we can expect from Jesus Jones' shows, being aware of your limitations as you grow older, the early days of the band and where they fit in, coming up with their eclectic sound, being part of a musical movement that changed the musical landscape, future plans and more.

This month we're headed to 1994 for a smorgasbord of slacker rock, industrial, alt country, pop punk, jungle, hip hop, triphop, and more. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. Robots In Love  began with a mind-meld between Elenor Rayner and an Atari Computer. With the ability to combine intense emotion with pounding beats, Elenor creates beautifully sad music for the dancefloor. A prolific and critically acclaimed New Zealand based-artist, she first established a successful music career in Melbourne, Australia touring the world and has credits on more than 50 CD releases.  She was once named “up and coming artist of the month” by Rolling Stone magazine and she is best known to fans of dark electronica and industrial music worldwide for her previous output as Sobriquet Nation, and as a member of Snog, The Crystalline Effect and Soulscraper. Her focus has been on Robots In Love remix collaborations, including work with Caustic Grip, Stars and the Underground, two remixes of the same song for LazyboyProactive, and the brand-new remix of JA/VI's dark pop song "Good Cocaine."  She is currently working on new remixes for Swedish indie-pop band Tiny Fighter, and Australian darkwave / post- punk / gothic rock legends, IKON. She's preparing for live dates with Snog in September supporting Pop Will Eat Itself in Melbourne and Sydney; and recently revealed that Soulscraper are also planning live shows for later this year. https://robotsinlove.bandcamp.comSubscribe to my monthly mailing list for the latest music news, updates and my next interviews and events:http://eepurl.com/gtw6PPQUEEN OF WANDS with DJ NocturnaEvery Saturday on Modsnap RadioKMOD: San Antonio"San Antonio's leading alternative streaming Radio Station since 2017"Listen : http://modsnapradio.comPlaylist and podcast: https://djnocturna.comYouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DJNocturna2pm (HST), 5pm (PST), 6pm (MST), 7pm (CST), 8pm (EST)#ModsnapRadio #Postpunk #goth #Industrial #Dark80s  #DarkWave

TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ DAVE BEER # 081 - PART 1 The man behind the iconic brand Back 2 Basics speaks about his life from quitting high school and becoming a roadie. Come listen to one of the greatest promoters from the 1990s golden era of house music lay it all out on his rise to fame and being part of the New York City Club scene. His vision was to take a part of the New York Club scene and import into the UK and he did it and very well at that. Beer's obsession with the punk-music scene saw him become a groupie, hitching up with punk band The Clash. As a keen Photographer, he captured many exclusive shots of the bands he followed incorporating them into art projects at college. His persistence on the tour circuit led to his first proper role as a roadie and later as tour manager for bands including That Petrol Emotion, The Ramones, Ghost Dance, The Utah Saints, and The Sisters of Mercy who he lived with at the time. During a spell with Stourbridge noisemeisters, Pop Will Eat Itself, Beer found himself working on the 1987 Def Jam Records tour that included Public Enemy, Ll Cool J and Run - D.M.C., but life as a tour manager would soon takes its toll.

Whipping boy's second album Heartworm was released on 23 October 1995. I first saw Whipping Boy in the early 90s in Cork. I loved the two Cheree EPs and their debut Submarine. Their gigs were always intense, explosive tinderbox affairs. Then we heard that they'd signed a record deal with Sony. Well this'll be interesting, we all thought. Heartworm was a revelation. In this episode I discuss the album with Paul Page, the band's guitarist. We talk about: the influence of seeing of Echo & the Bunnymen at Dublin's SFX in 1985; Whipping Boy's early days; passing off songs from Pop Will Eat Itself as their own demo tape to get a gig in Dublin's Underground; the early Cheree EPs; Submarine; signing to Sony; the writing and recording of Heartworm; touring with Lou Reed; and Heartworm's reissue. Produced by Paul McDermott for Learn & Sing Productions.

Matthew Sweet talks to Coventry born Clint Mansell, founder member of the group Pop Will Eat Itself, and one of the most distinctive composers of modern film. His credits include 'Requiem for a Dream', 'The Fountain', 'Black Swan' 'Loving Vincent', 'Rebecca' and many others, including his latest score for Ben Wheatley's new film 'In The Earth'. which is released this week. Clint talks with Matthew about his approach to writing for film, the people who have inspired him, and his regular working relationships with directors Ben Wheatley and Darren Aronofsky. He also speaks about working with the film director Duncan Jones on his sci-fi masterpiece 'Moon' and how significant this was for him, not least because he had idolised Jones's father, David Bowie. And Clint Mansell speaks candidly and movingly about the sudden death of his girlfriend and how this impacted his music for the film High Rise.

The Art of Longevity

Success came relatively quickly to Gary Numan, when his single ‘Are ‘Friends' Electric?' rose to the top of the UK charts in May 1979. Without a chorus and clocking in at nearly five and a half minutes, it was an unlikely a hit record as you could imagine. Its parent album, ‘Replicas', released the month before, went to number one in the album charts, as did its successor, ‘The Pleasure Principle', released only a few months later. This album featured what is perhaps Numan's best known single, ‘Cars'. He went out on a national tour to promote that L.P. yet still found the time to write and record his next album, ‘Telekon', released in September 1980, which also reached the number one spot. Three chart-topping albums and a national tour in less than eighteen months! It's a hell of an achievement, matching the The Beatles' first three album releases no less. Numan crowned off this period with three shows at Wembley arena. Not surprisingly, the twenty-two year old was burned out and he announced that these were the last dates he would play.He continued to release albums, though – and, in fact, returned to playing live quite quickly – but his career shifted into a slow decline, despite the high quality of albums such as ‘Dance' and ‘I, Assassin'. The constant mockery by the press and Radio 1's steadfast refusal to play his singles meant that by the late eighties, Numan had mislaid his artistic vision as he struggled to write the kind of songs he thought people wanted to hear.In the early 90s, though, encouraged by his wife, Gemma, and inspired by Depeche Mode's ‘Songs Of Faith And Devotion', Numan decided to write the kind of album that he wanted to hear. The result was ‘Sacrifice', which was an unarguable return to form, a trend he sustained on the subsequent albums ‘Exile' and ‘Pure'.1997 saw the release of a double album of Numan covers, called ‘Random', with artists such as Damon Albarn, The Orb, Pop Will Eat Itself, and Republica paying tribute to Numan's songs. Around this same time, acts like Nine In Nails and Marilyn Manson were including Numan covers in their live sets. Suddenly, Numan, long scorned by the British music press, underwent a critical revaluation. Over the last fifteen years, Numan has released a further five albums, including his new release ‘Intruder'. The albums have achieved higher and higher UK chart positions, with 2017's ‘Savage (Songs From A Broken World)' reaching number two. Throughout this time, Gary has continued to tour, with his concerts attended not only by the die-hard ‘Numanoids' from his early successes but also a whole new generation of fans. Next year, it looks as though, forty-one years after his ‘farewell' concerts, Gary will return to the stage at Wembley Arena. It has been an incredible career, forged by both Numan's musical talent and his tenacity and determination to succeed. In an hour long conversation for The Art of Longevity, Gary tells lifelong fan and Electronic Ears presenter Fenner Pearson, all about it. Support the show (https://www.songsommelier.com)

Some of those come up in this podcast. How does creativity can flourish in lockdown? How do performers reach new audiences? Some answers are here. The Wonder Stuff with Miles Hunt in conversation with David Eastaugh The Wonder Stuff released four albums and nearly 20 singles and EPs, enjoying considerable chart and live success in the UK. The band have continued to tour and record since 2000. Largely the vehicle for the songwriting of Miles Hunt, the band split up with a farewell performance as headliners of the 1994 Phoenix Festival, but reformed in 2000 and have toured and recorded since then, with Hunt the sole member of all line-ups. Known for their catchy songs and Hunt's sharp lyrics, the band's sound evolved from guitar pop to include sampling and elements of folk and country. The band - and Hunt in particular — were favourites of the UK music press, and were often associated with fellow Black Country acts Ned's Atomic Dustbin and Pop Will Eat Itself, with whom they have toured throughout their careers. The band scored one UK number 1 single, their release of "Dizzy" with comedian Vic Reeves, 17 top-20 single hits, and three top-10 albums in the UK. The band also toured internationally, and achieved some success in the United States, where they had six songs on the Billboard Alternative Songs Chart.

The latest chapter in the JOHN WICK saga, the new PARABELLUM, follows its assassin hero on a long perilous journey through hostile territory, a setup that brought to mind Walter Hill’s controversial hit turned cult classic THE WARRIORS. In this half of our pairing of violent journeys through the night, we examine Hill’s film in the context of the director’s late-’70s/early-’80s hot streak, to discuss how its rain-slicked streets and stylized version of New York gang culture came to typify a certain strain of ’80s action filmmaking, and debate whether its portrayals of masculinity and romance work in the context of Hill’s bare-bones approach to storytelling. Welcome to Episode 19! This is a conversation with Ben Ellingworth. Aria Award winning drummer for Illy, drummer for Warflags and a fantastic session player. He's worked with acts ranging from Pop Will Eat Itself to Peking duck and Clairy Brown, and is the ex drummer for both MM9 and Switchkicker. I first met Ben when he was working at Billy Hydes Drumcraft in Surry Hills, and I can distinctly remember seeing him play for the first time at the Annandale with Switchkicker. I walked away speechless after that gig. Ben had such an amazing sound and presence, and was one of the first guys I saw using a hybrid setup to it's full potential. So damn good! It's been such a pleasure to watch Ben go from strength to strength, including winning an Aria award for his work with Illy! We cover a lot in this conversation: Moving to Melbourne, what it means to “network”, growing up on the Central Coast, his tattoo and the philosophy behind that. (p=p-i). Plus we even talk a little bit about drums. It was such a blast to get to chat with Ben, please enjoy! Ben Ellingworth Illy (Aria Award Winner), Warflags, Pop Will Eat Itself, ex MM9 + Switchkicker. It's fair to say Soundtracking might not exist without Clint. That's because the genesis of the idea formed when Edith saw him performing his film scores at the Largo in Los Angeles back in 2012. And 5 years later, here we all are! After his band Pop Will Eat Itself disbanded in 1996, Clint was introduced to the business when Darren Aronofsky asked him to score Pi. The pair have collaborated several times since - as part of total body of work comprising around 50 films. During the course of the conversation, you'll hear extended extracts of Clint's work on High Rise, Moon, Pi, Black Swan and Requiem For A Dream. But we begin in the iconic venue in which this interview took place - Air Studios in London - with the main theme from the very first score he recorded there ...

The industrial music-heavy festival Cold Waves was started four years ago by Jason Novak (Acumen Nation, Czar, Acucrack, Cocksure) as a way for the community to rally after respected colleague Jamie Duffy took his life in June, 2012. Cold Waves continues to grow and gather momentum each year. This year's event (9/23-9/24 at Metro) is stacked, featuring performances from Meat Beat Manifesto, Clock DVA, The Cocks, Pig, 16Volt and more. The kickoff show on 9/22 at Double Door features nothing less than the 30th anniversary performance of the reunited Stabbing Westward. For this episode, Novak sits shotgun for a trip to the Fulton Market location of taqueria/sandwich shop Cemitas Puebla. To summarize: The tacos are poquito and the cemitas have a grande amount of bread. Over dinner, Novak talks about the evolution of Cold Waves, focusing on the memory of Jamie Duffy ("I think he would have been overjoyed at this"). He says the success of Cold Waves feels bittersweet ("You're constantly reminded that this shouldn't even be happening"). We also talk about Cold Waves kickoff band Stabbing Westward's ascent in the 90s. Novak says, "I remember (Acumen) being the junior version chasing after them." We chat about the 90s scene, industrial music, Wax Trax, Revolting Cocks, and Pop Will Eat Itself. Novak also talks about his charity, Darkest Before Dawn, which aims to provide support to Chicago's service industry and live entertainment workers, people whose schedules and isolation leave them "susceptible to depression, anxiety and suicide."

I'm DJ Tintin and this is my retro podcast. Glad you've found it. Feel free to stay as long as you like. Sorry for the re-introduction, but I've been away for so many weeks between my last podcast and this one that I almost feel like stranger to many of you. If you're tuning in for the first time, I am. And if you are, in fact, a newbie, I recommend going back and re-reading the first sentence, making sure to apply a tone of sincerity to the voice in your head instead of a sarcastic one. Before you do, however, I need to add a few more adjectives. That first sentence should read: Greetings from bread-less, milk-less, power generator-less Charlotte, NC. What the hell am I talking about? Well, for those listeners in the U.S., (and possibly abroad) you are probably well aware of the recent hurricane that hit the eastern seaboard over the past week. (If you're not, may I suggest the internet?) As such, there is neither bread, nor milk, nor power generator to be found anywhere as these are the desirable items for which panic-stricken residents spend hours in check-out lines hoping to buy the week leading up to the event.  Now, as a mid-west transplant living in the Carolinas for 14 years, I get the fear associated with hurricanes. I do. They are analagous to the fear we mid-westerners have in regards to tornadoes. The difference is you have about 10-15 minutes maximum to prepare for a tornado as opposed to a week or so for a hurricane. What that means is after a tornado passes, I can at least emerge from the twisted pile of tinder that used to be my house, go down to the local market (if it’s still standing) and celebrate my continuing to live with a bowl of cereal. In the Carolinas, that’s an impossibility because the shelves have been completely wiped out.   If I were a guy who actually bothered to prepare for catastrophe instead of worrying about posting his next podcast, I'd actually scoop up all the lunch meat, cereal and lightbulbs from the nearby food emporium at the first word of impending doom. Surely, someone with bread, milk and a power generator would be willing to barter for shelter should I be left homeless. Methinks the guy with the cache of mustard or mayo would probably be sitting pretty as well. On to the music … L.A. Style make their first appearance on CRC. They were a rave group that toured extensively between 1991 and 1995, when they eventually split up. The group was founded by radio host Wessel van Diepen, also the most successful dance-pop producer in Dutch history having assembled the groups Nakatomi and the Vengaboys as well. The band was fronted by Frans Zid Merkx, a multi-tool artist going by the moniker FX. Best known for their huge club hit James Brown is Dead, L.A. Style were the first group to land a rave track on Billboard’s Hot 100 Airplay chart. The song here, American Dream, is the last track on L.A. Style’s self-titled album from 1993. The sample contained within comes from the first inaugural speech of President Richard M. Nixon, delivered Monday, January 20, 1969. See the excerpt below: “The American dream does not come to those who fall asleep. But we are approaching the limits of what government alone can do. Our greatest need now is to reach beyond government, and to enlist the legions of the concerned and the committed. What has to be done, has to be done by government and people together or it will not be done at all. The lesson of past agony is that without the people we can do nothing; with the people we can do everything.” Pop Will Eat Itself have appeared a couple times in earlier CRC episodes (#13 and #20) and both times the tracks used were taken from their Cure For Sanity album circa 1990. If you believe the past is a good indicator of the future, you won’t at all be surprised to learn that X, Y & Zee, the track here, also appeared on that amazing album. I say amazing because I have vivid memories associated with it, trucking home from Texas to Kansas over fall break my sophomore year in college. I took my roommate to see the Kansas/Kansas State football game and then we stayed in Manhattan (also called "The Little Apple", which is home to the KSU campus) with friends drinking and carousing well into the night after a KSU victory (though truth be told I’m a KU fan). This album received heavy rotation on that 1200-mile round trip and deservedly so, though you won’t find much agreement among those haters of what was called the “grebo” movement. Mostly a product of the music media who have an unfailing compulsion to label clusters of similar-sounding music, grebo started in the late 80s and continued on into the early 90s before “Brit Pop” took over. PWEI were forerunners of the subculture, which encompassed bands whose sound blended garage rock, hip hop, pop and electronica. Dreads, partially shaved heads and high ponytails, torn jeans, boots, lumberjack shirts, army surplus clothing, and eclectic hats defined the fashion (if you can call it that), a look dubbed by the Trouser Press as “slimy-looking lowlifes playing retrograde raunch”. Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, Jesus Jones, The Wonder Stuff and others were all part of that short-lived movement. The remix appearing here, though taken from the single, also appears as a hidden track at the end of the Cure for Sanity CD. A little PWEI trivia: the band was headed by Clint Mansell, a fine musician who has gone on to score many Hollywood films including the Darren Aronofsky films Pi and Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler and Black Swan. Music writing credits on PWEI albums are all listed as Vestan Pance, a pseudonym for the entire band. At one time, after the addition of drummer Robert “Fuzz” Townshend to their line-up, they proposed the name Vestan Pance and Socks, which was summarily rejected by their label RCA. Speaking of heading up an artistic movement, The Happy Mondays would most certainly qualify. Lead by one-time smack user Sean Ryder, the Mondays charged headlong into what would become the Ecstasy-fueled club scene in Manchester, England. Dubbed “Madchester” by those who were there, the Mondays became poster boys for the “haves” of the sonic landscape, diving into excess so severely that they nearly drove their label, Factory Records, into financial oblivion. The whole thing is pretty well-chronicled in the excellent film 24-Hour Party People, directed by Michael Winterbottom, which is sort of a dramatized account of Factory Records head man, Tony Wilson, and the rise of Joy Division, with some attention given to other Factory bands including: New Order, A Certain Ratio, The Durutti Column and, of course, the Mondays. The track here, W.F.L. (which stands for Wrote For Luck) was remixed by Paul Oakenfold and appears on the mini-album Hallelujah. Hallelujah was originally a four-song EP called the Madchester Rave On EP, but was renamed after three bonus dance mixes were added before its release in the U.S. For Erasure buffs, a Vince Clarke remix of W.F.L. also appears on the CD version of the Mondays’ second full-length album called Bummed. When close-knit bands lose a member to tragic circumstances there exists a time of deep reflection followed by a re-evaluation period where remaining members make the critical decision to fold up the tent or to carry on. After losing singer Ian Curtis to suicide on the eve of their first U.S. tour, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris of Joy Division decided to continue on, though they decided a name change was in order to escape the long shadow left by Curtis. Out of the ashes came New Order. For Rob Rowe of Cause & Effect, the untimely death of friend and co-founder Sean Rowley too put his hopes for the future in serious doubt. The tragic loss in many ways eclipsed the success of their self-titled debut album on Exile Records (which was later re-issued as Another Minute by BMG). That album spawned two top ten dance singles, including You Think You Know Her, which stands as the group’s pop chart high point. Unlike Joy Division, Rob made the decision to move forward under the C&E banner. He enlisted Keith Milo, a California-based electronic musician and, along with drummer Richard Shepherd, the band released their second full-length album, Trip, in 1994.             “Performing the tribute to Sean at the KROQ Acoustic Christmas Show in LA was a turning point,” explains Rowe in the band’s Offical bio, “The overwhelming support from the fans and audience made me realize that giving up just wasn’t an option.” “Coming in to Cause and Effect after Sean’s death was a scary thing to do,” adds Milo. “There was so much uncertainty. Sean was a genius with melody, he was irreplaceable. I think there was solace in the fact that we became a very different band at that point and we all felt that we were doing the right thing by continuing on.” Produced by the great Martyn Phillips, Trip contains the brilliant track appearing here, It’s Over Now. It ultimately climbed to #7 on Billboard’s modern rock charts, and was the band’s fourth release to appear on Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. The last artist I want to touch upon this go-round is Man Parrish. An Andy Warhol, Club 54 “freakazoid”, Man Parrish is responsible for a couple of the most enduring, innovative and influential tracks in the history of electronic music. I say a couple because as quickly as he arrived he vanished once again into relative obscurity. Arriving right at the juncture of the evolutionary electronic music tree where legendary producers like Arthur Baker and John Robie split from the Kraftwerk-infused trunk to create a portion of the hip-hop foundation with Soul Sonic Force’s track Planet Rock, Manny Parrish would split the other way, building upon the notes of Kraftwerk’s Autobahn that were no doubt trapped somewhere in his brain. Using a Roland TR-808 drum machine and two keyboards, he crafted Hip Hop Be Bop in his bedroom. In doing so, he became one of the early producers-turned-artists on the electronic music scene. In an interview, Man said of the track, “It was played in a really wide spectrum: in black hip-hop clubs, in white underground places like Danceteria, in after-hours clubs. The radio station pumped it like crazy because I did vocoder spots for them and in exchange for payment, they put my stuff into heavy rotation. When you first hear it, you think, ‘Huh, weird instrumental track.’ But the more you listen to it, it's like, 'This is really interesting.' It even happened to me: I used to hate it at first." Hip Hop Be Bop went on to sell over two million copies, but Parrish received almost nothing for his groundbreaking efforts. Much like innovation, ripping off artists was commonplace back then. As Parrish explains, “When I first started out I was so broke I made this song called Heatstroke as a soundtrack for a porno movie. Some DJ had sampled it off the movie, made an acetate, and somebody told me, ‘Hey they're playing your music at this club.’ I ran down to the club and all of a sudden my song came on. I asked the DJ, ‘Wait a minute, where'd you get that record? It's my music.’ He told me, ‘That's your music? Come down to the record company, they'll sign you on the spot.’" He goes on to say, “I got nothing--it was the classic first record rip-off deal. I would go to the label and literally beg for rent. The guy who owned it bought a plane, a house in Vermont, and a Porsche with a hand-carved dashboard. It was how everyone did it back then.” After suffering so many disappointments and massive burn-out, Parrish ended up a male prostitute for a spell to pay the bills. As many musicians as were influenced by him, Man Parrish inadvertently may have influenced thousands of lawyers as well as his story reads like a textbook case of copyright infringement, an issue which would come to the forefront of music as technology and sampling began to take hold during the 80s. That’s it for this episode. Thanks to everyone for tuning in and be sure to support the artists as they make this all possible. Barring any more hurricanes, I’ll be back soon with another episode. Cheers!
