What Went Wrong with Katy Perry's Comeback

Keith Montena returns this week to discuss  "143", Katy Perry's sixth album, and the missteps that defined her 2024 comeback. After a few underperforming albums, Katy set the stage for a maximalist dance-pop album with Women's World as the lead single, dubbed a female empowerment anthem. But with producer Dr. Luke's controversial involvement, an inconsistent rollout, and material that failed to resonate, the era did not live up to expectation. From a pop fan, hear about why "Women's World" faced so much backlash, the history behind WHY collaborators were controversial, and an analysis from a pop fan on Katy Perry's trajectory from "Teenage Dream" to "Witness" and her (lovely!) redemption arc with "Smile", in just under 40 minutes. Vinyl Drop dives into how this comeback went off the rails.

______________________________________________ *Matthew 14:25-33* Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.' And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, 'O you of little faith, why did you doubt?' And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, 'Truly You are the Son of God.' ———————————————————————————— Jesus On Water Walks: His Fearless Looks Effortless (Tribute to Heart Wants What It Wants by Bebe Rexha) [Original written by: Bebe Rexha, Bonnie McKee, Ido Zmishlany, Jussi Karvinen, Liana Banks, Ray Goren, Ryan Williamson, & Sarah Solovay] Lyrics: Jesus On water, walks Water, walks Water, walks Water, walks Fearless looks effortless In His Father's name From above From above From above From above Worthy of praising So Pray to the God, who's faith, it soothes Master of the unseen Can heal like no one else can do Still dodging death Everlasting tune Dry bones writhing In His presence They're awakening So Be the arrow in His quiver Shout out words of prophecy Praise God cause He died for you on Calvary Jesus On water, walks Water, walks Water, walks Water, walks Fearless look effortless In His Father's name From above From above From above From above Worthy of praising So He's God Gonna praise His love He's God Gonna praise His love He's God He's the One to trust He's our truth ~ Jesus On water, walks Water, walks Water, walks Water, walks His fearless looks effortless Ducking fiery darts He's my escape He's led so many folks From death to life Never made one mistake Our souls, He won't mishandle He steals our pains Dry bones writhing Through His breath & presence He's awakening Be the arrow in His quiver Shout out words of prophecy Praise God cause He died for you on Calvary Jesus On water, walks Water, walks Water, walks Water, walks His fearless looks effortless In His Father's name From above From above From above From above He's worthy of praising He's God Gonna praise His love He's God Gonna praise His love He's God He's the One to trust He's truth ~ Jesus On water, walks Water, walks Water, walks Water, walks His fearless looks effortless He's our truth ~ Our truth ~ Truth ~ His fearless looks effortless He's our truth End Tribute written by Melissa SmithBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/mel-s-music--3634451/support.

Bonnie McKee chats about co-writing hits with Katy Perry, including "California Gurls" and "Roar," as well as her own artist career that has resulted in successful singles such as "American Girl." PART ONE:Scott and Paul share a little preview of what's to come as they prepare to celebrate Songcraft's 10 anniversaryPART TWOOur in-depth conversation with Bonnie McKeeABOUT BONNIE McKEE:Bonnie McKee grew up as a classically trained singer and pianist, but began pursuing a pop music career while still a teen. In 2004 she released her debut album, Trouble, with Reprise Records, but soon switched her focus to working as a behind-the-scenes songwriter. She has written ten songs that have hit #1 in either the US or UK, and is best known for her work with Katy Perry, which began with the Diamond-certified and international chart-topping album, Teenage Daydream. Bonnie contributed to three songs on the album, all of which became chart-topping singles: “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).” When the deluxe Complete Confection version of the album was released, Bonnie landed two more chart-topping singles with “Part of Me” and “Wide Awake.” She went on to collaborate with Katy Perry on four songs on the follow-up album, Prism, including the Top 20 single “Birthday” and the #1 hit “Roar.” Other successful singles from the Bonnie McKee songbook include “Dynamite” for Taio Cruz, “Hold it Against Me” for Britney Spears, “C'Mon” for Kesha, and the UK chart toppers “How We Do (Party)” by Rita Ora and “I Don't Care” by Cheryl. Additionally, she's written songs for Cher, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, Bebe Rexha, Jason Derulo, Kygo, and Adam Lambert, among others. In 2013, Bonnie reemerged as an artist with the single “American Girl” on Epic Records. She recorded an entire album, but parted ways with the label and it was shelved. Enough tracks and demos leaked online over the years, however, that fans were clamoring for it. Now, more than ten years later, Bonnie has re-recorded the album. She combined the re-recorded tracks with the original release of “American Girl,” which has now been streamed 23 million times on Spotify. The end result is Hot City, an album more than a decade in the making.

We sat down for a conversation about the craft of songwriting, what the critics get wrong about pop music, and what it takes to make it in an industry built around putting people in boxes and keeping them there.  Social links: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/headonfirepod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/headonfirepod TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@headonfirepod Support my work on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/headonfirepod Buy me a Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/headonfirepod Subscribe to the Head On Fire podcast Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/head-on-fire/id337689333 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4qTYYhCLMdFc4PhQmSL1Yh?si=5387b774ed6e4524 YouTube: https://youtube.com/c/HeadOnFirePod

We had the pleasure of interviewing Sophie Powers over Zoom video!Genre-blending singer-songwriter Sophie Powers has shared her eagerly awaited label debut single, “Nosebleed,” available now via Atlantic Records in partnership with TAG Music, the innovative new record label founded by trailblazing musician/entrepreneur Gabe Saporta (Cobra Starship, Midtown). Marked by its provocative lyricism and grungy twist on an inherently cookie-cutter genre, the track explores this generation's tendency to experience emotional extremes, as noted by the powerful chorus, “and we feel nothing even though we feel it all.” Toronto born, Los Angeles based artist Sophie Powers has been a force to be reckoned with since convincing her parents to let her drop out of high school and pursue a career in music at 16 years old, while also making her own clothes and becoming a fashion designer in her own right that fit the aesthetic and the direction she was heading with her craft. Within two years of taking that risk, she quickly earned attention for her direct and emotionally charged songs about teen relationships, depression, anxiety, all told through a unique musical blend of hyper pop, dark pop and punk pop. Powers' bold approach has reaped over 100K monthly Spotify listeners, close to 185K followers on TikTok (and more than 5.6M likes), 123K followers on Instagram, all affirming the immediate connection she has already made with fans around the world. NOSEBLEED, like all of Sophie's music, has a deeply rebellious spirit. Growing up, Sophie was drawn to strident, powerfully confident pop stars like Lady Gaga and Kesha, who struck down expectations of what it meant to be a “female artist” with little more than their own star power; the first show she ever went to was a Bruce Springsteen concert, an artist unafraid to unpick the social mores of conventional North American society and who made his way to arena stages through wry subversion. Avril Lavigne, Canada's patron saint of sarcastic, singular weirdos, was also a key influence. So you can understand how Sophie became the artist she is today: She was raised by musicians who valued individuality and, more importantly, pure honesty, above all else.Powers has raised her profile through features with artists like Kellin Quinn, NOAHFINNCE, DE'WAYNE, and $atori Zoom; collaborations with Bonnie McKee, Slush Puppy, Jon Lundin, Mike Gonek, Cam Hunter, Matt Squire, Jack Laboz, and Sacco; and show-stopping live performances spanning events like Subculture, So What Fest, and DUSK AZ Festival to tours and special guest slots with NOAHFINNCE, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, Peaches, and Scene Queen, Poptropicalslutz! Now, with “Nosebleed” and more new music to follow, Sophie Powers is creating her inimitable footprint… and the best part is, she's only just getting started. We want to hear from you! Though we've thought about what we want to be when we grow up, we're not nearly as reflective about who we are now. Marsha sits down with her friend, singer-songwriter Bonnie Mckee to talk about what it meant to manifest her dreams as a teenage pop-star living in Hollywood, and ultimately, becoming one of the biggest co-writers for some of our favorite pop artists to this day– Katy Perry, Brittany Spears, Jason Derulo, Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera (the list goes on). Bonnie explains to Marsha that it wasn't easy becoming a pop-star at age 16 after all. Shortly after her first album release, Bonnie tells Marsha she was lonely, broke, eventually dropped from her label, and struggled to work through a serious addiction to crystal meth.  Marsha and Bonnie discuss the business of songwriting, and how Bonnie figured out how to rebuild her life after hitting rock bottom. Bonnie also tells the story behind how she met, and eventually co-wrote some of the biggest hits for Katy Perry (“California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Last Friday Night”,and “Roar”). The two conclude with a discussion on sobriety, and Bonnie shares her new endeavor as a director and actress, in her new short film “April Kills The Vibe.” Bonnie also tells Marsha about her new music dropping in 2023. Bonnie McKee is a grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, filmmaker, and producer whose music has collectively sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. After scoring a record deal and moving to L.A. at the age of 16, she navigated “many lives” in Hollywood and faced setbacks when she was later dropped from the label. At a point in time, McKee was struggling to get by - with no running hot water or a cell phone - until the stars began to align and fortuitous introductions were made, like meeting Katheryn Hudson (who we know as Katy Perry) in a thrift store. She relaunched her career and went on to write 10 #1 hits, including “Teenage Dream,” “California Gurls,” and “Dynamite,” and collaborated with some of the biggest artists in the industry: Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Taio Cruz, Kelly Clarkson, and Kesha to name a few. In 2020, McKee wrote, edited, and produced an award-winning short film, “April Kills the Vibe,” that has earned her over 40 awards. In this episode, McKee imparts valuable insight on her past struggles with comparison and staying relevant in the ever-changing music industry, shares stories of “getting back up and doing it again” despite experiencing failure, reflects on how her definition of success has evolved, and highlights the importance of collaboration. “The Coup” premiered on March 26, 2012. It was directed by Paris Barclay, and written by show creator Theresa Rebeck. This is the first episode Ms. Rebeck has been credited with writing since episode 3. Upon premiere, the episode was viewed by 6.14 million, which is down .42 million from the week before. It just keeps going down… This is the first episode where there is zero music by Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman, which makes sense since the workshop’s over. Instead, we have the original song “Touch Me” written by Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic and Bonnie McKee, and two covers of Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” and Sly and the Family Stone’s “Dance to the Music.” After the Bombshell workshop, everyone is asking if the musical is dead. Well, Ivy is at least - driving herself crazy on a stationary bicycle. In addition, Derek and Ivy are taking a bit of a break so her inside track on the progression of Bombshell is moot. Derek meets with Karen to tell her that “they” are talking to a new songwriter, a new approach and a new song “and they need her to sing it.” The catch? Tom and Julia can not know. But they do know! Because assistant Ellis and producer Eileen are now BFFs and Ellis now seems to have a full time gig as a professional snoop. Karen is concerned about aligning herself with Derek but agrees to meet him at a dockside in Queens. The dockside ends up being a Brooklyn warehouse where Ryan Tedder of One Republic is working on, which involves Karen singing “‘touch me’ to a bunch of dancers.” Sam and the ensemblists of Bombshell *finally* get Ivy out of the gym by taking to Brooklyn Bowl. Bobby the soothsayer laments “they pay us nothing for those things and then as soon as it’s over no one calls and then we end up prowling around trying to figure out what’s going on. We did all that work for free, basically, and then we have no rights to even ask a question.” The result is what is perhaps the most realistic exchange of the television series thus far: Jessica: “I hate the theatre.” Bobby: “I hate the theatre.” Ivy: “I love the theatre.” Which turns into a bowling lane dance party, jumping off of the furniture, and grapevining down the bowling lane. Ivy catches Ellis on one of his snooping missions, where he lets on the Karen and Derek are working together. She replies, “Oh if they’re going to replace me with a star that’s bad enough but Karen Cartwright is a nobody.” Bobby meets up with Karen under the guise of catching up since the workshop, but what he’s really doing over beers is getting the dirt on Karen’s secret project.  The secret project ends up being a choreographed performance of “Touch Me” a Marilyn-inspired techno song staged on a rotating bed with satin sheets. Needless to say it doesn’t go over well with Tom and Julia, with both of them feeling betrayed by Derek and Eileen going behind their backs. But when the creative team finally comes together, Eileen tells them that the Marilyn musical now needs a star to move forward. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

DJ Blacklow's Podcast

It’s been while since I’ve gotten a new podcast out the door – in fact, this is my first of summer 2013. I suppose it’s a blessing that I’ve been working so much (both DJing and in my full-time job as a journalist), that I haven’t really had time to crank ‘em out like I had been a year ago. I’ve been in a weird transition period as a DJ recently in terms of defining my sound. From the first time I finally spun an after hours party last fall, I’m learning that deep down I’m a big room guy – I prefer a more driving and dramatic sound to lighter fare. But I’m not a strictly tribal after-hours guy like Paulo or Abel, or a circuit peak king like Joe Gauthreaux or Danny Verde — I’m not an awesome tea dance master like Wayne G or Grind, or an EDM strictest like Nicky Romero or Alesso (all of whom are some of the DJ’s that I admire the most right now and love to hear out live often). Being the Gemini that I am, I have a really hard time picking one sound and sticking to it. And in that, I’m finding that which truly is my own sound. I love pop music and I love wordless tribal beats, I have gay and straight influences, and I can’t play only male or female vocals (although being gay, I’ve always loved a good screaming diva!). And lord knows, I can’t stick with a decade — you’ll yet again hear at least something in here from each of the past five of ‘em. Through it all, I came of age in New York City, so I’ll always be partial to a classic house 4/4 beat, no matter how it’s dressed up. What you won’t hear are remixes from any of the DJs whom I’ve historically been most influenced by — in the SoundCloud age, all DJs have access to a panoptic of sounds that range from official commissions to tracks put together by a teenager in their mom’s basement. There’s a new guard rising, but top talent always shines through. With the exception of a few songs, many of these remixes are by folks I’ve never used before. This podcast reflects my schizophrenia a bit, and yet I was totally conscious about its bi-polar nature when I was laying it out and recording it. It’s almost like a wedding of my influences – what’s the saying? — Something old, something new … something borrowed, something blue. I decided to start this one out very tribal in the first five tracks to build a foundation, but with a new take on some very classic and recognizable vocals. Then there’s a spurt of some new pop music, before I get into what I think is a very strong section of EDM-light (the type I love). From there I throw in a couple of more pop songs (with EDM-light remixes) before going into a few flashback tracks that you probably haven’t heard out anywhere in quite a while (a trademark of any one of my sets), before ending with five female vocals that have me singing out loud in the shower right now. And as always, my closing track might seem out of left field, but it’s the track I’m most likely to throw on at the end of the night just to make myself smile when I’m in the car driving home alone after a gig that just ended at 4 a.m. Without further delay, please enjoy a selection of tracks that have truly made the middle part of my summer ... The dog days, if you will. I think it was worth the wait. And for those of you in Chicago for Market Days this weekend, see you on the dance floor! My Upcoming Live Schedule: August 9th – 5 -6 PM, Minibar, Chicago (Market Days) August 10th – 6 – 7 PM … Minibar, 8 – 9 PM … DS Tequila, Chicago (Market Days) August 16th – Stripper Circus, Share Nightclub, Las Vegas August 17th – private party in the Hollywood Hills September 1st – Size Sundays, Here lounge, West Hollywood September 7th – Rasputin, West Hollywood Tracklist: “Arriba! feat.
