View From The Rafters: Behind the Scenes with the Boston Celtics
After being traded to the Boston Celtics the day before training camp, Jrue Holiday has taken on the challenge of moving to a new city and accepting a new role on a new team. He dives into his experience, how he's embraced having the ball in his hands less and how it all comes down to one thing: winning. Winning a championship alongside Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and the rest of the Celtics is his one and only goal on the NBA court, but as Holiday explains, his competitive nature doesn't stay in the locker room. He says it follows him home, into a house that features one of the most competitive families in the country. Holiday and his wife, two-time soccer gold-medalist and former US Women's National Team member Lauren Holiday, can't be on opposing teams for anything for fear of an argument. And now, their extreme wills to win have passed on to their kids to create an interesting dynamic to say the least. Holiday often calls his daughter “JT,” and he tells a story about how his son thought Jayson Tatum's sneakers were actually his sister's. The second half of the episode dives into Holiday playing against his former team, the Milwaukee Bucks, for the first time and drawing the assignment to guard all-world forward Giannis Antetokounmpo. Was that actually Holiday's idea? Maybe, he says. Holiday has now played alongside Antetokounmpo, Tatum, Brown, Anthony Davis, DeMarcus Cousins and on a gold medal-winning USA Men's Basketball Team, so Marc and Abby ask him about common threads among the best of the best. The group rounds out the conversation by diving into Holiday's experience at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics – AKA the Covid Olympics – and how bizarre it was for him to see Team USA's opponents act like fanboys around the likes of Tatum and Kevin Durant. 0:30 – Jrue on his love for food 2:30 – Adjusting to playing with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, and how they differ from other superstars he's played with 13:15 – Jrue on his competitive nature, and how that impacts his marriage to USWNT soccer great Lauren Holiday, who's also extremely competitive 22:10 – Flipping to the other side of the Celtics/Bucks rivalry, playing the Bucks for the first time, and defending Giannis 31:00 – Jrue's experience at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics 35:15 – How the bubble led to the launch of his family's JLH FundSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's beginning to look a lot like...the WN2T Boyz are about to bring that Christmas spice to your earholes! They begin, as they always do, by spreading that small business love (4:05) and recapping your responses to our Top 5 Christmas Movies poll (15:12). Next, they celebrate the start of the NBA season (29:45) and nominate their Cousin of the Week (47:27). The guys tell you how they really feel about that stimulus package (52:00), and last (but certainly not least), they talk about how The Mandalorian has filled their cups with joy (1:11:05). Since there is ever so much soccer, its a Filibuster on a Monday! We start by reminicing about howl long it has been since we recorded on a Sunday (miss you, Martin), before getting into the meat of the podcast. D.C. United actually played Chicago last week, and we talk about Conor Doyle's golazo and the formation that the team employed in that game. We also talk about the draw against Toronto FC, and start off with the stellar performance of Steve Birnbaum in that game. We then talk about the defense overall and how impressed we were by them and how they did not give up a goal against one of the highest-priced attacks in the league. Finally, we talk about how TFC didn't really create many chances, despite the popular narrative that they dominated the game. We move onto tomorrow's game against the Philadelphia Union in the US Open Cup, and how the Union have been burning up their starters in the league. We argue that they should concentrate on the Open Cup, because they have a better chance at pulling a 2013 D.C. United then doing well in this regular season. We also talk about Friday's game against the Seattle Sounders, who will be getting Clint Dempsey back from suspension but will be missing Obafemi Martins. We compare Dempsey's suspension to what Cuauhtémoc Blanco got, and then talk about what Dempsey will do in this game and how United will have to play to win. Finally, we talk more about the 2015 World Cup and start with discussing their high press. We ask whether or not missing Lauren Holiday and Megan Rapinoe made the USWNT better, their central midfield tactics, and how the United States will approach this game against Germany.
It is an extra-long episode of Filibuster today, both because there is so much soccer to talk about and because Adam has abandoned us for fairer climes. Jason, Ben, and Leanne press onwards, opening the show talking about D.C. United's 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the US Open Cup. We talk about how, despite leaving the game a little late, it is still a good win, as well as talking about Jalen Robinson specifically and what we want to see from him going forward. We then move onto D.C. United's 2-1 comeback victory over the New England Revolution. We talk about how the beginning of the game wasn't great, and then break down Fabian Espindola's role, whether it be goal scorer or provider. With a curse to the MLS schedule makers, we then move onto tonight's game against the Chicago Fire, and talk about Mike Magee, what worries about the Fire but why in the end United should beat them (because they're not very good right now). For the last MLS game of the week, we wrap up by talking about the Toronto FC game on the weekend. Sebastian Giovinco still scares us, Toronto FC can play physical like we do, and United's best strategy might actually be to just bypass the midfield to get the ball away from Michael Bradley. And since there wasn't enough soccer to talk about, we have to break down the USWNT and their game against Colombia. We talk about why you shouldn't feel great even with the win, the yellow cards received by Lauren Holiday and Megan Rapinoe, the ever-changing right midfielder, and how to win in spite of your flaws. It is a super-sized episode, so strap in and give it a listen!
