One of the great things about our short Canadian summers is spending time at a cottage. I'm lucky in that I have a good friend who rents hers out a few weeks a year. Hubby and I spent a week there this summer during one of the hottest weeks we've had so far. We swam in the lake, or lac as they say in Quebec, lite campfires and roasted marshmallows, cooked burgers and hot dogs on the BBQ, spent time with family and just generally soaked up the sights and sounds of nature. It was a blessed time.Grand Lac Nominique is a small lake, as they go here in Canada. The lake is 8 km long and 3 km wide and it can be found in the Laurentians, which are a mountain range in eastern Canada, in the province of Quebec. The lake is bounded by big rocks, and the water laps against them in a very pleasing way… a snippet of which is what I'm offering you today.Like the Canadian summer, this is a short and sweet taste of the glories of the Grand Lac Nominique. Bernardo, 58, is serving a life sentence after being convicted in 1995 of the kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault and first-degree murder of two teenaged girls, and he was declared a dangerous offender. He's been transferred to La Macaza Institution, a medium-security prison in the Laurentians region of Quebec. Families of Paul Bernardo's victims demand killer's return to maximum security The government attempted to have the video removed, but Ontario Superior Court Justice David McCombs ruled that the entire 31-minute interview was valuable to the public. "The Internet is now an established extension of responsible media outlets' reporting," the judge ruled. Psychological Profile of Paul Bernardo: Paul Bernardo is a notorious Canadian serial killer and rapist who gained widespread media attention due to his heinous crimes committed in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Analyzing his behavior and statements, we can construct a psychological profile to understand his mindset and the factors that contributed to his ability to deceive interrogators. Psychopathy: Bernardo's behavior and lack of remorse indicate that he exhibits psychopathic traits. Psychopathy is characterized by a disregard for the rights and feelings of others, a lack of empathy, and manipulative tendencies. His ability to commit gruesome acts without showing signs of guilt or remorse suggests a significant deficit in emotional processing. Sexual Sadism: Bernardo's crimes involved sexual assault, rape, and murder, indicating a strong sadistic component to his personality. He derived pleasure from exerting power and control over his victims, engaging in acts of extreme violence and degradation. This sadistic tendency likely played a significant role in his motivation to commit these crimes. Narcissism: Bernardo's statement about his sexual insecurity and performance anxiety reveals a narcissistic viewpoint. He emphasizes his own needs and desires, portraying himself as the victim of his own sexual impulses rather than taking responsibility for the harm he inflicted on others. This self-centered perspective aligns with narcissistic traits commonly observed in psychopathic individuals. Deception and Manipulation: Bernardo's ability to lie to police interrogators is rooted in his psychopathic tendencies. Psychopaths are skilled manipulators and often possess a charming and persuasive demeanor that allows them to deceive others. Bernardo likely relied on his ability to manipulate and distort the truth to evade detection and maintain control over the situation. Criminal Sophistication: Bernardo's crimes were carefully planned and executed. He and his wife, Karla Homolka, worked together to abduct, rape, and murder their victims. The fact that they managed to commit these crimes without being apprehended for a significant period indicates a certain level of criminal sophistication. Bernardo's ability to maintain a double life and avoid suspicion is likely a result of his meticulous planning and ability to adapt his behavior to avoid detection. The events of Bernardo's crimes, particularly the abduction and murders of Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French, shocked the public and continue to hold significant news value due to the controversial court proceedings and the nature of the crimes committed. Bernardo's psychological profile provides insight into the underlying factors that contributed to his ability to lie to police interrogators and manipulate others, shedding light on the disturbing mindset of a psychopathic serial killer.

About Maia Maia's formative years were spent in a home built by famed Canadian architect Ron Thom. With an approach that is as creative as it is rational, Maia's design sense is fueled by sun-filled travels. Her professional experience includes the development and enforcement of qualification standards for professions, regulatory frameworks, and lobbying for public policy in support of safe interior environments in Ontario.  Starting in 2014, Sharon led several projects intended to provide a more inclusive and fairer pathway to qualifying as an interior designer in Ontario through competencies-based frameworks. In 2020, ARIDO undertook a commitment to the advancement of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility within ARIDO as an organization, the profession, and the community. Sharon is a Maltese-Canadian who is proud of both her Maltese and Canadian heritage and roots. Ted Kalil is the chair of Nordiq Canada and a strong ally to females in sport. Ted's love for the outdoors started at age 9 attending Camp Nominingue in the Laurentians (with ties to the legendary Jackrabbit Johannsen, who effectively introduced nordic skiing to North America). It was there, in cedar canvas canoes built onsite at the camp, that his passion for paddling first began. One of his favourite quotes is Camp Nominingue's motto, which is from Henry David Thoreau's book, Walden, and it reads, “Rise free from care before the dawn, and seek adventure. Let the noon find thee by other lakes, and the night overtake thee everywhere at home." As a father to 3 daughters, Ted has a passion for supporting women in sport. He served for years on the board of Fast & Female, Chandra Crawford's not-for-profit, and moved over to the Nordiq Canada board where he now serves as the Chair since 2021. I was pleasantly surprised at the depth of the Rush rabbit hole I went down while editing/mixing Jake's story.  I, for example, had no idea that they had recorded most of their biggest hits at Le Studio in Morin Heights (just a short drive up the road from here in Montreal).  In fact the videos for Tom Sawyer and  Limelight  both feature the Laurentians quite prominently. There is no official video for YYZ though this live concert from Rio in (I think) 2002 is definitely a trip (not every day you see a crowd of 10s of thousands of people singing along to an instrumental). Jake did a fantastic job of telling some of the story of YYZ but did you know it lost out on the 1982 Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental to Behind My Camel by The Police?  (And that Sting refused to play on Behind My Camel?)  The more you know... If you want to hear the original studio version, you really ought to to check it out here either before or after you hear Jake tell his story!   Be sure you follow The Volume Knob on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or at our website volumeknob.net. Her next move was to the Eastern Townships where, from 2000 to 2004, she was an integral member of the sommelier team at Auberge Hatley, a 5 diamond CAA – Relais & Châteaux. Throughout her exciting career path, Elyse continued to earn credibility for her craft and accolades in Canadian and international competitions. Elyse Lambert is now the 5th Best Sommelier of the World 2016. She is currently working as a Sommelier Consultant and continues sharing her passion at Radio-Canada’s morning show, Medium Large and as a wine column in Journal de Montreal. Lynda Quirino has been involved with the paranormal investigation and research field since 1982.
