The Four Seasons are one of the greatest vocal groups of all time. Led by Frankie Valli, their lead singer with the distinctive falsetto voice, they had dozens of hits beginning in the early 1960s including “Sherry”, “Big Girls Don't Cry”, “Can't Take Me Eyes Off Of You”, “Dawn (Go Away)”, “Rag Doll”, “Working My Way Back To You” and many more. My guests in this episode all had important roles with The Four Season. L. Russell Brown wrote their hit song “C'mon Marianne”. Lee Shapiro was their longtime Keyboard player and the arranger for their hits “December 1963: Oh What A Night” and “Who Loves You”. Robby Robinson is the band's current Keyboard player and Musical Director for the last 46 years. And John Paiva was the band's guitarist from 1973-78. In honor of The Four Seasons my featured song is “Sherry”, their first smash hit.---------------------------------------------The Follow Your Dream Podcast:Top 1% of all podcasts with Listeners in 200 countries! For more information and other episodes of the podcast click here. On today's StartUp Health NOW episode we're bringing you an excerpt from a recent StartUp Health Masterclass featuring Lee Shapiro, the managing partner at 7wireVentures. Very few people, if any, have the experience and market understanding that Lee Shapiro has. As we'll get into in the conversation, he's been an investor as well as an operator, guiding Allscripts and then Livongo. More than that industry expertise, however, we appreciate Lee's ability to put work and life in perspective. He's become a real sage, and in this Masterclass he shares wisdom on how to thrive and grow even when the markets are constrained. The Masterclass was held in front of a live virtual audience of around 40 founders from the StartUp Health community. Towards the end of the class we opened up the line for questions, so you'll get to hear Lee's practical feedback to founders working in the trenches. This session was so rich with insights and takeaways that we turned it into a video and a blog post as well. The video breaks down Lee's 21 top insights from the session, so if you want to skim through those, head over to StartUp Health TV on YouTube. Enjoy the Masterclass. In this episode, McDermott Digital Health Co-Chair Lisa Mazur sits down with Lee for his thoughts on key ingredients of a successful digital health solution, what he looks for in early-stage companies, top trends in digital health and more.
Whether they like it or not - and they probably don't – every health tech founder needs to think about money. How much they need, and how to get it. For many founders, raising outside funds becomes a whole new full time job that they have to take on. This year, funding in the sector has dipped sharply, making that job even harder and more stressful. On our podcast this week, we hear from the other side of the table. We sat down with the heads of two major health tech investment firms and got their advice for health innovation entrepreneurs in 2023. First up is Lee Shapiro, managing partner at 7wireVentures and long-time collaborator with StartUp Health. Shapiro is a luminary in digital health investing so we asked him for his macro view of the industry and got a few practical tips for founders raising funds today. Then we hear from Shawn Ellis, managing partner at Distributed Ventures, a $100M fund that invests in Seed and Series A deals and has a strong health tech focus. In our chat Ellis broke down where his firm has found success recently and exactly what he looks for in a pitch. Just FIVE MONTHS after launch, rural health startup Homeward is proving its potential for growth with MORE funding – today announcing its $50 million Series B (that's $70 million total for the folks keeping score at home) – AND a huge 30,000-patient partnership with Priority Health. Co-founder & CEO Dr. Jennifer Schneider is here to breakdown both bits of news and give us some context about what they indicate about the rural healthcare market. There are a couple surprising facts in this one that add up to why investors like ARCH Venture Partners and Human Capital (co-leads), General Catalyst (which led the Series A), and Lee Shapiro and Glen Tullman (old buddies and former Livongo colleagues who went in on this with personal funds outside of their fund 7wireVentures) were excited to jump into a quick Series B. Surprising Fact 1: 90% of all rural Medicare beneficiaries are covered by just 7 payers, which makes the Priority Health deal a bigger deal than even that massive 30K patient population might indicate. Surprising Fact 2: Homeward's market of rural Americans is actually TWICE as large as the diabetes market that spurred the investment and growth of Livongo. For all the math, the details on how the business actually works five months in, and how Homeward is actually going to market as a ‘healthcare infrastructure' provider rather than just a next-gen medical group, you're going to have to give this one a watch! * Jessica DaMassa, the emerging ‘It girl' of health tech interviewing, chats it up with the ‘who's who' of the health tech and healthcare innovation set on 'WTF Health - What's the Future, Health?' This week we bring you a conversation between Unity Stoakes, President & Co-founder of StartUp Health, and a very special guest, long-time StartUp Health investor, collaborator, and friend Lee Shapiro. Lee is the Managing Partner at 7wireVentures, a leading health tech investment firm, but that's just one of the many hats he's worn in recent years. The "beachside chat," which was held live at the 2022 StartUp Health Festival @ ViVE in Miami Beach, covers a range of topics, from what 7wireVentures looks for in a startup to how healthcare can learn from adjacent industries, like gaming and banking. Lee Shapiro is one of those rare voices in the industry that combines hard-earned operational experience with the health moonshot wisdom of a philosopher. He embodies the characteristics of tenacity and humility that he looks for in a startup founder, and he's always a pleasure to talk to. Enjoy the conversation. What's Lee Shapiro's take on the health tech market's state-of-play? 7wireVenture's Co-Founder and Managing Partner stops by to talk early-stage investment, what's hot and what's not post-pandemic, and how he views the digital health funding frenzy of the past couple years which, one could argue, was kicked into high-gear by portfolio-company-slash-previous-employer Livongo. Lee says there's “enough broken business processes in healthcare to last a lifetime,” which means a lot of opportunity for consumer-minded health tech startups to change things, but does the recent slowdown in venture funding and pummeling of public market health tech stocks indicate that the category is in trouble before it even gets a chance to make a real impact? We get Lee's opinion on whether or not the market is cooling, what he thinks will happen next with valuations, and what he views as the best way to scale a healthcare startup – particularly as we watch Glen Tullman run the ‘Livongo playbook' at new business Transcarent. And, speaking of Glen… did Lee really teach him everything he knows?? We're starting some trouble in this one! *** Jessica DaMassa, the emerging ‘It girl' of health tech interviewing, chats it up with the ‘who's who' of the health tech and healthcare innovation set on 'WTF Health - What's the Future, Health?' January 14, 2022: Informed connected healthcare consumer. That's https://www.7wireventures.com/ (7wireVentures) mantra. How will big tech, private equity and hedge funds engage across digital health this year? Here to talk funding is Co-Founder and Managing Partner, https://www.linkedin.com/in/leeshapiro/ (Lee Shapiro). The concept of care is moving outside the four walls of the health system. It's moving into the home. It's moving to rural locations. “Care Everywhere and Access to Care” is a huge funding area that will trend in 2022. What distinguishes the winners from the not so successful players in the digital health space? Where does an M&A strategy make the most sense? And what should we make of Oracle's acquisition of Cerner? Key Points: 00:00:00 - Intro 00:04:30 - Put consumers in the position of being better able to manage their health. When you do that, everybody wins. 00:11:40 - We'd rather take a great team with an okay idea than a so-so team with a fantastic idea, because we know that that great team is going to turn that good idea, in all likelihood, into a fantastic idea 00:16:55 - What funding trends will we see in 2022? https://www.7wireventures.com/ (7wireVentures)

The idea was conceived by Lee Shapiro and Stephen Wise, who were commissioned by WB executive Greg Silverman to draft a screenplay.
