Topics:5-Element Hiring FrameworkHiring for Attributes vs. ExperienceMoneyball Thinking for Smart Hiring...and so much more.Top TakeawaysWhat happens when you work and lead with passion?Vern and Michael emphasize that passion is crucial for both business success and leadership. Passion keeps teams committed through challenges and drives both personal and professional growth. For leaders, it means embracing a growth mindset, being open to feedback, and fostering team development. Passion is just one element in Vern's hiring framework—and a key predictor of success.Scorecards help you hire without the guesswork. Hiring practices often rely on gut feelings, making them prone to bias. Michael advocates using scorecards with measurable criteria like technical skills, cultural fit, and soft skills, along with clear performance expectations. This approach makes it easier to assess candidates objectively and sets the stage for accountability. When new hires understand what's expected, they can focus on the right things to succeed in the role. When paying more helps small businesses scale faster. Vern and Jordan acknowledge that small and medium-sized businesses often hesitate to offer higher salaries. But hiring top-tier talent for critical roles is an investment in expertise that can drive results quickly. This aligns with Michael's Moneyball approach to hiring. Just as the Moneyball thinking in baseball focuses on overlooked metrics to build a winning team, in business, the idea is to invest in key roles that might be costly upfront but will have outsized returns over time.About Vern DavenportVern Davenport is a partner at QHP Capital, a growth equity firm focused on healthcare, life sciences, and technology. Topics:How to Free Up Leadership BandwidthThe Power of Mission, Vision & ValuesPitfalls in Implementing The Management System...and so much more.Top TakeawaysWant more freedom? Get more structure and discipline. Many founders resist structure, fearing it will slow them down. In reality, a well-defined system brings clarity, accountability, and autonomy. As an SMB founder, Michael knows firsthand that clear roles and a problem-solving framework allow companies to move faster and focus on growth instead of firefighting. Vern describes The Management System as liberating. It removes dysfunction and unnecessary complexity, creating an environment where talented people can thrive.Middle management is the backbone of scalable companies. Great companies scale by empowering middle management, not by keeping decisions at the top. The Management System ensures that middle managers understand the bigger vision, their role in achieving it, and how their success is measured. And if someone resists this level of accountability and transparency, the system reveals it fast. Efficient teams track fewer metrics—and get more done. Vern suggests ditching 50-slide reports for clear, actionable tools. Tracking sheets keep teams focused on 10 or fewer key metrics—green means you're on track, red means it's time to act. Tools like the A3 condense problem-solving into a one-page plan outlining the issue, root cause, and next steps. With these tools, teams leave meetings not just informed, but aligned and ready to execute.Teamwork makes the dream work. Podcasts and books often highlight solo journeys to success, but Michael emphasizes that true success comes when a team unites for something bigger than themselves. What matters more than personal wins is a shared mission and a willingness to support each other through the highs and lows. When a group shares that purpose, success follows naturally.Recommended Reads from This Episode“Accelerating Growth” by Vern Davenport: Unpacks how a structured system can help companies scale by improving execution, accountability, and leadership alignment.“Getting the Right Things Done” by Pascal Dennis: Teaches how to apply lean management principles to eliminate inefficiencies.“The Founder's Dilemma” by Noam Wasserman (Harvard Business Review article): Explores the trade-off between control and financial success that founders face as they scale.About Vern DavenportVern Davenport is a partner at QHP Capital, a growth equity firm focused on tech-enabled life sciences and pharma services. This is a fascinating discussion with two real leaders in health and health tech

When Joel Vengco started his thesis during the third year of a MD-PhD program, it was the beginning of the end of his time in medical school. It changed his career path and kicked-off what he says is a love for data. The field of Big Data didn't exist yet, but it's essentially where Joel was focused. And thanks to a professor who was also the chief scientific officer at Eclipsys (which later merged with Allscripts), Joel had access to extensive datasets to drive his work. He initially found a lot of data in disarray, but he also recognized the future potential for using data to transform the healthcare industry.Joel eventually left medical school in favor of a career chasing healthcare data inside venerable provider and vendor organizations – from Eclipsys and GE Healthcare, to Boston Medical Center, Partners Healthcare, and Baystate Healthcare where he founded the digital health incubator, Techspring. Joel is currently SVP & Chief Information & Digital Officer at Connecticut's most comprehensive healthcare network, Hartford Healthcare. In this episode of Healthcare is Hard, Joel talks to Keith Figlioli about using data to drive healthcare transformation, his strategies for optimizing technology in a provider organization, and his advice for startups and entrepreneurs. Some of the topics they discuss include:Data liquidity. For people who work with big data, the “5 Vs” that guide success – volume, value, variety, velocity and veracity – are well known. But Joel says another attribute that's missing and will be increasingly important is liquidity. He talks about how being able to move data from one place to another is essential for creating ecosystems. He talks about how analytic ecosystems, partnership ecosystems, and even startup ecosystems all require data to move freely.Data literacy. Through his various roles, Joel has seen significant differences in the way organizations use data to make decisions. He describes how some providers monitor data retrospectively, while others are using data more like a payer would, especially when those organizations share risk. He talks about a future where organizations understand data at a deeper level and use it to not just “admire the problem” with reports, but to help make the next decision.Technology through an equity lens. In many ways, technologists and developers are designing the future of healthcare. Joel talks about the responsibilities that come along with that, and how he instructs his team to look at everything they build, design and develop through an equity lens. He also discusses recent developments in artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, and the need for guardrails to ensure it's used responsibly.Shifting right. To support the transformation of healthcare, Joel talks about how technology leaders in health systems must move beyond the traditional business of IT. He estimates that the average health system currently invests 90% of its resources on traditional IT work, and only 10% on transformative projects. He calls for a drastic shift and says organizations should get to a place where they're spending 40% on traditional IT and 60% on transformation. To hear Keith and Joel talk about these topics and more, listen to this episode of Healthcare is Hard: A Podcast for Insiders.

Staying on top of your health isn't always easy. Time, money, and knowledge all play a big role in shaping your healthcare. Missing a follow-up appointment might not seem like a big deal, though it could be a game changer for your health or your practice and staying on top of appointments should be a priority. But when life gets in the way, who is there to address it? On the latest episode of Highway to Health, host David Kemp speaks to Kevin Sleeper, the Chief Growth Officer with Abax Health about how Abax is working to decrease referral leakage, improve provider cash flow, and boost patient outcomes. Sleeper's main drive: maintaining patient health improves their quality of life. By ensuring your patients attend their recommended follow-up or referral appointment, their healthcare concerns can be addressed by a specialist and financial leakage can be kept to a minimum while improving patient outcomes. “I walk out the door and I never come back. That's the leakage we're talking about. A patient that you could get scheduled back into your health system for a follow-up visit, walks out your front door, and you never see them again…there's a lot of issues, both from a revenue standpoint and from a patient-safety, patient-health standpoint that result from those things,” explained Sleeper. Sleeper has been the Chief Growth Officer with Abax Health since August 2022. Prior to helping Abax expand its horizons, Sleeper worked as the Director of Healthcare East at Workday and in leadership and sales roles nThrive, athenahealth, and Allscripts. He is a graduate of the University of Vermont with a Bachelor of Science degree in Small Business Administration and Management. Abax Health is a clinical analytics and patient engagement company that helps improve patient outcomes by connecting referrals and increases clinical revenue by stopping revenue leakage.

The possibility of Patient Directed Interoperability in Healthcare? Think it will happen? FTA Apple's health data-sharing feature is now live in the latest version of iOS, allowing some users to give their clinicians information from their phone's Health app via their electronic health records.  The integration will https://www.mobihealthnews.com/news/apple-adds-walking-stability-family-and-provider-health-sharing-and-more-wwdc-2021 (initially work) with six major EHR companies: Allscripts, athenahealth, Cerner, CPSI, DrChrono and Meditech Expanse.   "Having meaningful conversations with a doctor about everyday activities during a visit is a key part of managing health, but it can be difficult to remember the details," said Apple during a press release about the new feature in June.  Apple also announced on Tuesday that iOS 15 will allow users to store verifiable health records in the Health app, based on the SMART Health Cards specification.  "In an upcoming software update, they can also choose to add verifiable COVID-19 vaccination records as a vaccination card in Apple Wallet to present to businesses, venues and more," https://developer.apple.com/news/?id=7h3vwlh5 (said the company). Patients at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208647 (participating hospitals and health systems) were already able to view data about immunizations, lab results, medications and vitals directly in the Health app. Now, the new feature allows information to flow in the opposite direction. ---- #healthcare #healthIT #cio #cmio #chime #himss https://www.healthcareitnews.com/news/apples-health-data-sharing-feature-now-live (https://www.healthcareitnews.com/news/apples-health-data-sharing-feature-now-live)
