Amanda and Jenn discuss cozy reads, morally complicated characters, small-town stories, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by the Read Harder Journal, The Plotters by Un-su Kim, and At the Wolf’s Table by Rosella Postorino. Subscribe to the podcast via RSS, Apple Podcasts, or Stitcher.   Feedback Maid by Stephanie Land (rec'd by Jessica from Insiders) Eat Yourself Calm by Gill Paul (rec'd by Morgan)   Questions 1. It’s almost my brother’s birthday. He’s finishing up the Dune series and he really likes the dynamic of a villain who has to do good in order to ultimately do evil. He’s looking for more books with this concept or vice versa (good guy doing bad to do good). I’m a former bookseller myself, but I’ve got nothing. He’s also a linguist, if that helps. I realize this is super specific, but I’m really hoping you guys can help me be the best sister for his birthday. Please no YA or romance. I’ve linked his goodreads so you can see what he normally reads. Thank you! -Emma   2. Hi! I’m looking for literary fiction audiobooks that are so engrossing they’ll help me forget, say, that I’m doing household chores or facing a stressful day at work. The books that have fit this bill for me in the past are: The Nix, The Changeling, The Miniaturist, Swing Time, The Circle, and Rebecca. Preferences: Under 12 hours No graphic sex scenes Light to no cursing Thank you for your podcast!! -Veronica   3. I really love small town stories and I have been searching for one to really grab my attention. I prefer something darker and more serious in tone. I love books like Beartown or J.K. Rowling's A Casual Vacancy where a close knit community gets unraveled by an event. I prefer books that don't focus on a single character, but rather explore relationships and different perspectives within a small community. I have Little Fires Everywhere on my TBR but I would love more recommendations for small town stories. -Marija   4. Hi, I've discovered that I have a curious but extremely distinct affinity for non-fiction books that cover broad history through a narrow lens. I feel like I'm struggling to describe exactly what type of books I mean, but when you hear some titles, you'll get it. Examples that I've loved in the past are Tom Standage's "History of the World in 6 glasses" and "An Edible History of Humanity"; "At Home" by Bill Bryson; "Consider the Fork" by Bee Wilson, and most works by Mary Roach and Simon Garfield. I love love love reading about history, but I've never been a huge fan of biography/autobiography or books that dive too deep into a single event. I guess I love the big picture/global view (most bang for my buck, maybe?), but with a fun and unique thread tying history together in a way I had never considered before. Looking forward to your suggestions! Thanks so much! -Kelly   5. Hi! I'm a big fan of your podcast and have had submitted questions before, your recommendations are always great. I am a middle school teacher and I have recently started a Dungeons and Dragons club at my school, and the response has been overwhelming. I expected 8-10 kids to sign up but I actually had over 30! As we begin to play D&D and other RPGs, I'd love to be able to have an "inspiration library" stocked with fantasy/adventure books. Obviously, I need titles from Tolkien, Terry Pratchett, and JK Rowling but I would love to include books with strong female and minority protagonists. I want my new club to be inclusive to everyone and my goal is to provide something for everyone. You always say to mention if you're under time constraints so while I hope the club lasts for a long while, I'd like to start compiling my library soon. Any recommendations you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks so much! -Matt 6. A peculiar request: I am especially fond of books where humans are aided by talking cats. Neil Gaiman's Coraline is a good example, as are many of the Tortall books by Tamora Pierce. I would love suggestions for other books with human-cat partnerships. Thank you! -Crazy Cat Lady   7. Cozy nothings? It could be the weather or just the year, but I've been enjoying "nothing of contention happens" books recently. My go to series for this is The Cat Who series by Lilian Jackson Braun which is set in a fictional small town and focuses primarily on the day to day life of people there (technically it's a cozy mystery, but the mystery is pretty minimal). And I'm here today with Sandra Baublitz. Hi, Sandra. Sandra: Hi, Alexandra. Alexandra: Am I pronouncing your last name right, by the way? Sandra: Yes, that's correct. Alexandra: Okay, good. Let me give our listeners a little introduction to you. Sandra Baublitz has been a bookkeeper. She's worked at a greenhouse and raised and sold produce, among other jobs. However, writing is her first love. Her "Clarissa and Paw Mini Mystery" series has a lovable St. Bernard as a detective. The first story started out as a contest entry. Sadly, it didn't win and sat for many years, until Sandra dusted it off, edited it, and published it. There are now five short stories in one novel in the dog detective series of mystery books. Sandra doesn't own a St. Bernard herself. So for now, she is content to write about Paw while her two cats rule the household. Tell us about Clarissa and Paw. Let's start there. Sandra: Clarissa is the young woman. She's in her early 20s. And her Uncle Harry is a police chief. So she grew up to know about police investigations and such. And so she herself has gotten into investigating mysteries. The first one pretty much was when she went to visit her cousin and realized that her uncle had been murdered. And, of course, Paw, he is her loyal St. Bernard, and he loves to get into mischief and dig into things. So, of course, she is going to find some clues that drag her into this mystery too. Alexandra: Right, yeah. And in the introduction, I mentioned that you've always wanted to own a St. Bernard. What is it about those dogs that appeals to you? Sandra: I think they're so big and warm and lovable. I really fell in love with them when I first saw the Beethoven movie. And so I mean you saw this huge fuzzy dog...and then what also compounded it was I worked at a place where we did computer printer cartridges, and I worked in-house, but they would have people that worked at home and brought their work in. One day, a woman brought in a St. Bernard puppy she had just gotten. Well, I just fell in love instantly. I had dogs when I was younger, but never a great big dog, because my mom was like "We're not feeding a great big dog." And probably after my little dog was gone after so many months, I might've tried to get a big dog, but the cats just showed up. So after that, we became a cat household. Alexandra: Right, yes, yeah, exactly. Clarissa, you mentioned that her uncle was a police detective. And then in the first short story, there's a different uncle. Sandra: Yes, that's a different uncle.

Help support this podcast! >> Welcome to Episode 017 of the Write Now podcast, my lovelies. I am so glad you're here. Today we're going to talk about your work/life/writing balance. Where are you putting your energy? If you go out to iTunes and check out the Write Now podcast "about" info, you'll see it says: "A weekly podcast for aspiring writers looking to find a healthy work/life/writing balance." Sometimes, I feel like three separate selves trying to work together, instead of one self trying to find balance: my work self, my life self, and my creative writing self. And they don't always get along: Work self: This is your professional side -- the one that is paid to meet & greet clients, counsel people over the phone, make sandwiches, pour concrete, teach math, serve lasagna, balance the company budget, and lead a team. Life self: This is the "home" you -- the part of you that takes care of and hangs out with your family & friends, washes the dishes, binges on Star Trek: TNG reruns, volunteers at the animal shelter, and loves chili dogs. Writing/creative/passion-project self: This is often your most personal or secret self -- the you that loves, desires, and needs to create. The you that stays up until 2:30 a.m. drinking coffee and hammering out the next chapter of your novel (or bemoaning your writer's block). Think about how much energy you devote toward each of these three realms. (Not how much time you spend in each! Time and energy are different.) This can be per day, per week, per year -- however it makes sense to you. My lineup: Work = 70% of my energy Life = 25% of my energy Writing = 5% of my energy Don't judge me too harshly, please. Next, I'd like you to think about what it would take for you to be balanced or more satisfied with how you're prioritizing your life. Please be aware that balance is different from equal. A healthy work/life/writing balance doesn't mean each one should get 33.33% of your energy. It means that you need to determine what a satisfying, healthy balance would be for you, and be very intentional about living that out. For me, that healthy, ideal balance would look like this: Work: 30% Life: 35% Writing: 35% What is your ideal balance? How does it differ from the balance you're juggling right now? And what can you do to balance out the energy you spend in each realm? The book of the week. This week, I gave in to my curiosity (no puns about cat-killing, now) and read what I had long viewed as a member of a weird fringe genre of literature -- cat mysteries. The Cat Who Could Read Backwards by Lilian Jackson Braun is the first in one such series (dubbed "The Cat Who..." mystery series). I was a little disheartened that the cat (named Koko) was not the main character -- rather, he plays supporting actor to newspaper reporter Jim Qwilleran as the latter finds out who kills a local art critic. Notably, The Cat Who Could Read Backwards was published in 1966, so there are no mobile phones in characters' pockets, no computers in the newsroom, all newspapers are printed on paper, etc. And honestly, that just made this cozy mystery feel all the more cozy to me. There's just something about reading a paper book or newspaper by the fire with a cat curled up in your lap that's incredibly comforting. Despite, you know, all the murder that keeps happening. This is a sweet-natured, cozy murder mystery that pokes fun at the pretentious nature of the art world while elevating the pretentious nature of cats. I liked it, much to my surprise. But I'm not incredibly sure it's worth your time. Keep up-to-date with my reading exploits on Goodreads. Leave me a review. Like the Write Now podcast?
