It's finally happening - Cyrus and Sarah have finally read The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson! Turns out they loved it, but isn't that always the way with books you've been putting off? Baru Cormorant is a twisty turny hard fantasy novel about the devastation of empire, with fabulous worldbuilding, fantastic characters, and also it's kinda gay. We love to see it. Topics of discussion include the belief structures behind imperialism, the joy of an unreliable narrator, and what the fuck a 'murre' is. Support the show

My personal favorite Goodreads list Ninefox Gambit is on is Space Operas About Rebelling Against Imperial Powers That Involve Body Snatching and Are Gay. Happy Reading Everyone Today's Library Tidbit is on technology anxiety! You may have noticed that we do a lot of programs at the library geared toward learning a new device, gadget, database, or software. The reason we do this is to provide a relaxed, small group environment with a knowledgeable staff member who is able to give some closer attention and answer questions as they come up. We think this is important because many many people today have technology anxiety. There are actually two different types of technology anxiety. There is the anxiety that is an effect of both what we are seeing on our screens combined with a need to constantly be checking our screens, and there is the anxiety someone feels when they attempt to use technology they are unfamiliar with. Today's tidbit is on the second type of technology anxiety. We may discuss how technology can add anxiety and stress to our lives at a future date. Technology anxiety is not a new concept. Back in 1987, Larry Rosen, Deborah Sears, and Michelle Weil wrote a paper titled Computerphobia in the journal Behavior Research Methods, Instruments, & Computers, that looked into the, then just called, computer anxiety of university students. Now that we have more technology than just computers available for personal use the term has evolved, but the general concept has stayed the same. I feel like most people are familiar with what anxiety is and feels like. However, just to make sure that we all understand what the type of anxiety I am talking about in this tidbit. Anxiety is intense, excessive, and persistent worry and fear. Technology anxiety is when a person has intense, excessive, and persistent worry and fear about technology. This can manifest itself in different ways, but the most common ways this anxiety presents is with a raised heart rate, change in body temperature, chest pain, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, difficulty thinking and forming thoughts, difficulty in making short term memories. Some people will have more of the physical symptoms and some people will have more of the cognitive symptoms. Either way as you can guess the effects of technology anxiety do not help people learn how to use technology, which is one of the way people can lessen their technology anxiety. If you have ever been handed a new device or logged into a computer and not recognized what was on the screen and gotten immediately worried and afraid? You've experienced technology anxiety. Everyone has this to some degree, but if the anxiety is so large that you cannot learn new technology on your own you should come in and take one of our classes! There's no reason to feel ashamed if you experience technology anxiety. It's extremely common and you are probably doing better with technology than you think you are. If you experience technology anxiety when you need to sit down to do something with technology that makes you anxious take a few deep centering breaths first. Deep breathing is proven to lower your heart rate, which helps lower anxiety. Some technology topics the library has classes on in August include, iPads, Apple watches, ebooks, Android tablets, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and Library databases.

One quest all of will at some point take part in, is the quest for our own identities. Whether this is something consciously undertaken or subconsciously sought, the narrative of who we are as individuals is a human quest. It's not then surprising that a lot of fiction reflects this; the classic hero's journey is, at its core, the search for identity, for a place in the world. This week the dragons delve into just why this is such an appealing aspect to add to a narrative. What exactly is identity in narrative terms? How does it put pressure on a plot? And what are some of the best ways this trope is used? Episode 216: Sugar & Spice - Nuance and the Nice-washing of Female Characters in Speculative Fiction   While SFF has gradually been including a broader selection of fully formed female characters - as opposed to the sexy lamps, girls in refrigerators and 2D love interests of earlier speculative fiction decades - there is still one aspect that appears to elude our grasp. The vast majority of female characters have to be mostly 'nice' (unless very obviously the villain.)  This week Jules and Madeleine take a look at why this is still prevalent and why it causes problems. It’s almost my brother’s birthday. He’s finishing up the Dune series and he really likes the dynamic of a villain who has to do good in order to ultimately do evil. He’s looking for more books with this concept or vice versa (good guy doing bad to do good). I’m a former bookseller myself, but I’ve got nothing. He’s also a linguist, if that helps. I realize this is super specific, but I’m really hoping you guys can help me be the best sister for his birthday. Please no YA or romance. I’m looking for literary fiction audiobooks that are so engrossing they’ll help me forget, say, that I’m doing household chores or facing a stressful day at work. The books that have fit this bill for me in the past are: The Nix, The Changeling, The Miniaturist, Swing Time, The Circle, and Rebecca. Preferences: Under 12 hours No graphic sex scenes Light to no cursing Thank you for your podcast!! -Veronica   3. I really love small town stories and I have been searching for one to really grab my attention. I prefer something darker and more serious in tone. I love books like Beartown or J.K. Rowling's A Casual Vacancy where a close knit community gets unraveled by an event. I prefer books that don't focus on a single character, but rather explore relationships and different perspectives within a small community. I have Little Fires Everywhere on my TBR but I would love more recommendations for small town stories. -Marija   4. Hi, I've discovered that I have a curious but extremely distinct affinity for non-fiction books that cover broad history through a narrow lens. I feel like I'm struggling to describe exactly what type of books I mean, but when you hear some titles, you'll get it. Examples that I've loved in the past are Tom Standage's "History of the World in 6 glasses" and "An Edible History of Humanity"; "At Home" by Bill Bryson; "Consider the Fork" by Bee Wilson, and most works by Mary Roach and Simon Garfield. I love love love reading about history, but I've never been a huge fan of biography/autobiography or books that dive too deep into a single event. I guess I love the big picture/global view (most bang for my buck, maybe?), but with a fun and unique thread tying history together in a way I had never considered before. Looking forward to your suggestions! Thanks so much! -Kelly   5. Hi! I'm a big fan of your podcast and have had submitted questions before, your recommendations are always great. I am a middle school teacher and I have recently started a Dungeons and Dragons club at my school, and the response has been overwhelming. I expected 8-10 kids to sign up but I actually had over 30! As we begin to play D&D and other RPGs, I'd love to be able to have an "inspiration library" stocked with fantasy/adventure books. Obviously, I need titles from Tolkien, Terry Pratchett, and JK Rowling but I would love to include books with strong female and minority protagonists. I want my new club to be inclusive to everyone and my goal is to provide something for everyone. You always say to mention if you're under time constraints so while I hope the club lasts for a long while, I'd like to start compiling my library soon. Any recommendations you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks so much! -Matt 6. A peculiar request: I am especially fond of books where humans are aided by talking cats. Neil Gaiman's Coraline is a good example, as are many of the Tortall books by Tamora Pierce. I would love suggestions for other books with human-cat partnerships. Thank you! -Crazy Cat Lady   7. Cozy nothings? It could be the weather or just the year, but I've been enjoying "nothing of contention happens" books recently. My go to series for this is The Cat Who series by Lilian Jackson Braun which is set in a fictional small town and focuses primarily on the day to day life of people there (technically it's a cozy mystery, but the mystery is pretty minimal). Other examples would be Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, Agatha Christie (before the murder kicks in) and the Mitford series. Contemporary or classical, adult lit series preferred, and bonus points if they're on audio. -Terry   Books Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James Insurrecto by Gina Apostol VE Schwab’s Shades of Magic series (A Darker Shade of Magic) The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson (tw: institutionalized homophobia, torture) The Wanderers by Meg Howrey Burial Rites by Hannah Kent Into the Water by Paula Hawkins The Fates Will Find Their Way by Hannah Pittard How the Irish Saved Civilization by Thomas Cahill Pandemic by Sonia Shah Dactyl Hill Squad by Daniel José Older The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste Sabriel by Garth Nix 100 Books with Cats post Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris Flavia De Luce series by Alan Bradley (#1: The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie) Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney (rec’d by Jeff)

Amanda and Jenn answer holiday gift requests in this week's episode of Get Booked! This episode is sponsored by Penguin Random House Audio and Book Riot Insiders.   Questions   1. Hello, I’m looking for a book recommendation for my friend. She has been going through complicated, heartbreaking separation and has had a tough few years. She’s always been an avid reader and recently mentioned to me that she thinks she’d like to read a sweet, hopeful love story. I really want to find her something like this for Christmas. Originally I suggested When Dimple Met Rishi and the Kiss Quotient to her, but she’s older than I am and I don’t know how much she would enjoy YA, and I don’t think she’d go for a true romance novel. One of her favourite books is Practical Magic, she also loves Kate Morton books, historical fiction and classics. Please could you suggest a heartwarming love story for my friend, bonus points for historical fiction or witches. Thanks --Emily   2. Hi! I absolutely love your podcast, as well as all the other Bookriot podcasts! For holiday presents this year I am gifting basically everyone in my family with books, as we are a family of avid readers. I'm pretty good with picking out books for everyone, except my brother. Lately we have also gotten in some heated debates regarding feminism. I was hoping you could give some suggestions for a non fiction book that addresses feminism and is backed by lots of cold hard facts, in a not too aggressive way if possible. I am hoping a book will get him to open his mind more to the struggles still facing women. Any feedback is appreciated, thanks again! --Liza   3. I'm planning a trip to Egypt this Christmas (2018) to get my fill of the sites there. Can you recommend some books, both fiction and non, that will help whet my appetite for my trips? I'm open to all stages of Egyptian history. I have already read the whole Elizabeth Peters 'Amelia Peabody' mysteries a couple of times and loved them. I would prefer to avoid dry boring histories and accounts for something a bit engaging especially as I tend to read to relax and don't want to have to think too much. Bonus points for anything easily available by ebook or audiobook as I live in a country where libraries and bookstores with English books are limited in selection. --Beth   4. Dear Amanda and Jenn I heard your nudge on your last episode to get Christmas recommendations in ASAP and I was spurred into action, especially as I have a two-fer if possible. The first is for a friend of mine. He asked me to find some book ideas to give to his sister for Christmas. She likes ‘books where women move to Cornwall or wherever and open a bakery or something and maybe fall in love’. She has read everything by: Lucy diamond, Jenny Colgan and Cathy Bramley He wants to find her something new, possibly someone with a big catalogue of books for her to keep reading if she likes it. The second is for me. Last year you recommended ‘Pride and Prejudice and Mistletoe’, I think in your Jane Austen episode, and it was the last book I read in 2017. I LOVED it and it was the perfect light end-of-Christmas read. It was my first Christmas contemporary romance and I’m hoping you can find me another. Jane Austen connection welcome but not necessary. I normally read regency romances so that’s fine too, just something light and Christmassy to close off my year. Just FYI I hated Austenland. I’m in England so UK availability is a must for both. Thanks so much! --Kim   5. Hi! in Ep. 147 you recommended "River of Teeth" by Sarah Gailey which I bought for my boyfriend-- immediately-- like as I was listening to the show because he loves Hippos. Idk, it's a childhood thing that has morphed into an adult thing. Anyhow, he's obsessed with the book, he's almost finished. I actually bought "American Hippo", so he could read the whole series & stories. He can't stop talking about it! This makes me so happy! For Christmas, we are getting each other a book and chocolate instead of traditional gifts. I'm nervous because I hit it so out of the park on this book that any other book may be a let down. Can you help recommend another fun, romp of a book? It doesn't have to have hippos, lol. He's into Thrillers, Adventures, Fantasy (but while he watches High Fantasy, I've never seen him read it), Sci-fi. He loves Neil Gaiman and Murakami. He mainly gravitates towards shorter books & graphic novels. If you could recommend by early December that would be great! I really appreciate it. PS. Also, I LOVE your show because I always find the best recs for me/friends/family. In a sidebar, I sent my bff "The Book of the Unnamed Midwife" because she's a Doula and she is obsessed. --Kate   6. Hey there! I love your show and look forward to it every week! Ever since I started listening I can hardly keep up with my TBR list, my library holds list has gotten bonkers and I couldn't be happier! So thank you :) I am writing because I need some help getting a book for my husband for Christmas. We are both avid readers and started a new tradition last year that on Christmas Eve we give each other a book and spend the night reading and eating chocolate. He loves high fantasy and grim dark stories which are a bit out of my wheelhouse (I don't tend to like to go as dark as he does). He loves Brandon Sanderson's The Stormlight Archive and has read absolutely everything by Brian McClellan and Mark Lawrence. He also recently read Patrick Rothfuss (Kingkiller Chronicles) and loved it too. He also has really enjoyed The Magicians Trilogy by Lev Grossman and loved Ready Player One (neither of which are grim dark obviously). I'd like to get him something that he maybe hasn't heard of that will really knock his socks off! Looking forward to your suggestions! --MJ   7. My husband told me that for Christmas this year, he wants books (yay!). He specifically asked for a series that has at least 3 books already published, the longer the better. He doesn't read as often as I do, but when he does, he can tear through books/series very quickly, so when I say long, I mean loooooong. He's really into "high fantasy," especially Brandon Sanderson, Robert Jordan, and Terry Goodkind. He also likes sci-fi and other types of fantasy, and sometimes reads big-name thriller writers like Stephen King and James Patterson. A while ago, I bought him the A Darker Shade of Magic series, which he devoured, and for Christmas this year I would like to introduce him to a new (to him) author/series that is somewhat in his wheelhouse, but maybe expand his horizons a little bit (ideally something not written by a white man and with main characters who are not white men). Thanks for your help, --Rebekah   Books Discussed How Long 'til Black Future Month? by N.K. Amanda and Jenn discuss Australian historical fiction, psychopaths, comedic murder mysteries, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Book Riot Insiders, Penguin Random House Audio, and So Done by Paula Chase.   Feedback Just some feedback for Ben’s daughter from episode 155! As someone not *too* far removed from the voracious-child-reader stage can I suggest: Dragonskin Slippers (Jessica Day George), Inkheart (Cornelia Funke), The Ranger’s Apprentice (John Flanagan), the Stravaganza series (Mary Hoffman) and Eragon (Christopher Paolini). Hope some of those are useful, and thank you so much for the podcast - every episode just brightens my week x --Hannah   Questions   1. First of all, when I found your show it was like a dream come true. I love to read! Second only to my love of reading, is my love of discovering new books and putting them on my to read shelf. I keep telling my husband that I wish I had y’all’s job. Speaking of my husband, I am recently married and we are getting ready to go on our honeymoon in December. We are heading to Australia! My husband and I have no intention of just laying on the beach and relaxing all honeymoon. That’s not our style. Instead we plan to do plenty of historical tours. My favorite tours are when I already have a little background on the history of a place. I was hoping you guys could recommend some historical fiction novels set in Australia, especially dating back to its early colonial days and possibly some about its Aboriginal population. I do not like nonfiction or pages and pages of descriptions. I can’t wait to hear your recommendations!! Thank you! --Amelia   2. Hello Ladies! Thanks for answering my previous questions (all those Besses are this Bess) and laughing at my jokes! Very validating! I'm writing to ask for reading recommendations to read over my honeymoon! We're going to an all inclusive resort and I can't wait to just lie around and read :) I'm specifically asking for books that are that tender, heartrending romance where you just want them to be together! Examples include Song of Achilles, Room with a View, Golden Compass Series (Will x Lyra forever). I already own Possession, haven't read it yet -- Way down with pining and angst, I am not really looking for a romance novel, but a literary story where two characters' love is just oh so burny and tender! Thanks in advance, --Bess - bride to be   3. Hi, so like you I loved Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho and I am waiting on tenterhooks for the next book in the series. I’m looking for something to filled the Sorcerer to the Crown shaped hole in my heart. I really like both the Regency, the politics, the slow romance and the magic elements of the book. The Regency period is such an interesting time in British history - right on the edge of the modern, but not quite there yet. I don't need the book to have magic, but it is always a plus. I have already read: Arabella of Mars by David D. Levine Shades of Milk and Honey by Mary Robinette Kowal Sorcery & Cecelia: or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot by Patricia C. Wrede & Caroline Stevermer and loved all of them. --Sidsel   4. I am looking for recommendations for my 11 year old daughter. She would love to read YA, but I think I would like to hold off from the love relationships and more adult themes for a little bit longer. Last year she read "Some Kind of Happiness" by Claire Legrand and said it was written for her. I'm looking for books that are perhaps more mature, but somewhere in between middle grade and YA. Thanks! --Lauren   5. Hi Amanda and Jenn, I am listening to Deadly Manners, a dark comedy murder-mystery podcast series I am in love with! It's an old-school style story with modern sensibilities. The plot: there's a dinner party and guests are getting picked off one by one, and Levar Burton narrates. Need I say more? I just finished the next to last episode and am already dreading the void in my life when it's over. Can you recommend some books to fill it? Thanks! --Alexis   6. I know Halloween just passed but I heard Shelly Laurenston's booklist from Smart Bitches, Trashy Books podcast, one of the things she mentions is psychopaths and I was wondering if you had any recommendations for this. I don't want mystery or thrillers, more like a mind dive into spotting them, try to understand why they do it or facts. Since the holiday are coming up I would like some recommendations as soon as possible please. --Ash   7. Hi Jenn and Amanda, I would love to get some recommendations for romance novels that deal with sexual trauma or sexual dysfunction (or that just acknowledge the fact that sex isn't always easy and fun). I'm not fussy about the type of romance (just no paranormal). I realize this may be difficult because romance is supposed to be escapist but I am desperate to see my experience represented. Thanks so much for your help! --Joss   Books Discussed The Monster Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson (tw: homophobia, assault) Becoming by Michelle Obama obviously The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough That Deadman Dance by Kim Scott The Mothers by Brit Bennett My Education by Susan Choi Heartstone by Elle Katharine White Gail Carriger Witchmark by CL Polk Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste Death at Wentwater Court by Carola Dunn An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good by Helene Tursten, transl. Part 2 of our epic chat with Seth Dickinson, games writer and author of 'The Traitor Baru Cormorant'. In this 1st half (last week)we mostly discussed Seth's brilliant debut novel, and the line between complicity and subversion. In this half we discuss: - His work on Destiny's lore - Using animation and sound to tell a story, and how it can improve gameplay without actually changing it - Uncharted and how in so many games there is no narrative, or reason to care, about killing the poor AI cannon fodder - Bastion/Half Life/Transistor/F.E.A.R - and the tricks they use to make you care about the characters and game world. - Ludo-narrative dissonance!

The surgery makes Tereshkova into a tank. In the war, she never showed any fear, not at Fulda, not even in the snows of Vogelsberg when the Americans dropped the first bomb. When Clinton and Yeltsin shook hands at Yalta, when the word came down to the 8th Guards Army to yield Frankfurt and withdraw to Soviet soil, Tereshkova spat into the dirt and said: “Too bad." | Copyright 2014 by Seth Dickinson.
