Subscribe on iTunes Follow on Spotify Follow on Podchaser Follow on Instagram Connect on Facebook Join us for a Ceremony Full Transcript Four of my closest friends watched from their computer screens as I put on a small pile of t-shirts, each one on top of the other. Before putting on each shirt, I read aloud the words I had painstakingly written on the fabric with a ballpoint pen. Words of grief. Words of loss. Words of shame. [MUSIC] The thing about shame is that it thrives on secrecy. So I'd created this ceremony to share it in a safe space, to expose the shame and take some of its power away. Putting all those t-shirts on felt awful. But it was an important beginning of the ceremony that ultimately freed me. I’m Colleen Thomas. I'm a ritual artist and I help people make sense of life through ceremony. This is Shame Piñata. It can be difficult to keep going through the hard times, but the good news is that as human beings, we are so amazingly creative. We can reframe major life changes as initiations and we can do it on our own terms. Lent: The experience of transition into womanhood was something that everyone present took very seriously. It just felt, like, an honor to be celebrated and cherished. Venegoni: A ritual passage ceremony I wish I could have had would be something along the lines of a coming out ceremony. You know, I think that for so many queer people that not only is it not honored, but it's something to be ashamed of or to hide. Taylor: I didn't die. I survived. And I really do... from the ancestral work that I've done in my life... time is not linear in that world. Like, time is a spiral. It's past. It's present. It's future all at once. And so the healing that I did on that day and continue to do ripples back to my Ancestors. On Season 2 of Shame Piñata, join me to explore how to honor each change as a new beginning. Episode 1 launches on February 5. Be sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Radio Public or go to shamepiñata.com to learn more.

Spiritually Minded Mom Podcast

One of my favorite talks from the April 2020 general conference was by Sister Joy Jones. She shared about the roles of covenant-keeping women in the Restoration. Sister Jones said, “In the final analysis of women’s continuing roles in the Restoration, and for us all, what role is preeminent? I testify that it is to hear Him, to follow Him, to trust Him, and to become an extension of His love.”This season on the podcast we have talked about each of these four roles that Sister Jones called “preeminent.” In episode 10, the final episode in this series, I’m focusing on the last role “to become an extension of His love.” You’ll hear what happened when I found a teenaged girl wandering on the side of the road in deep snow, what the story of the Nephites and the Anti-Nephi-Lehis in the Book of Mormon teaches us about Christ-like love, and thoughts on how keeping our covenants can help us show up for others with love instead of judgement, gossip and pride. Thank you so much for joining me this season on the Spiritually Minded Women podcast. I hope by listening to these episodes you have come closer to the Savior. I hope you have come to know more fully that your own journey has value and that the things your journey allows you to contribute are unique and important. Unforgettable: Messaging | Leadership | Personal Brand | Visibility

Ever pushed publish on something personal, controversial, or that offers your service... then felt queasy in your stomach, wished you could take it back, and had it consume your thoughts for the rest of the morning? Even though your logical brain tries to tell you it’s no big deal, that doesn’t stop the flood of thoughts. >>> I’m too much. Nobody cares. Everyone thinks I’m silly. (Or at least those are the thoughts I have.) That, my dear ones, is a vulnerability hangover. It triggers this inner evolutionary part of yourself that feels like this small act could get you kicked out of the safety of the tribe, out into the desert to wander until you die of thirst. We worry vulnerability hangovers are a sign we’ve done something wrong. But the problem with that thinking is that then the next time when you’re ready to post something, you remember that feeling and think twice. Maybe it’s not worth sharing. Maybe I should just share an inspirational quote everyone will like. For many women, the decision to stop taking birth control comes with the unintended and generally unforeseen consequence of skin issues like acne and rashes. The truth is, your hormones are taking an unexpected roller-coaster ride and your body is just trying to regain its balance. My friend Dr. Jolene Brighten knows a thing or two about this. She's a functional medicine and naturopathic medical doctor and the founder of Rubis Health, a clinic specializing in women's hormones. Recognized as a leading expert in post-birth control syndrome and the long term effects of hormonal contraceptives, Dr. Brighten helps her patients find a healthy balance between conventional and alternative medicine. In this interview, Dr. Brighten and I look at the seldom discussed effect that birth control pills can have on your skin, whether you take them currently or have in the past. As always, talking with Dr. Brighten was so enlightening. She is full of information, that as a woman, I wish I had learned years and years ago.   Have you experienced unexpected effects when you stopped birth control, specifically that may be tied to your skin? Leave a comment!   In this episode: What “post-birth control syndrome” is and what the common symptoms are The effect that birth control can have on your body's nutrients What happens to your hormones when you go off of birth control Tests you should ask your doctor for if you're struggling with a hormonal issue after stopping birth control   Quotes: “If you're on hormonal birth control now and you're like, this is my jam and I want to stay on it, let's talk about how to keep you safe. And if you've already come off you may be experiencing post-birth control syndrome.” [2:47] “Your body has to detox, it has to get things out. But if you're not getting things out through the channels of elimination, like urine and breathing and pooping, your skin becomes the place where your body pushes that out. It's not betraying you. It's trying to keep you super safe!” [5:44] “I advocate that women get a full thyroid panel every single year as part of their yearly exam, sooner if you have symptoms.” [15:22]   Links: Be sure to enter our incredible launch contest to win over $500 of skincare goodies! Based in Cape Town, South Africa, he is the creator of the Aron Regimen. By examining the causes of atopic eczema and the common flaws in conventional treatment, Dr. Aron has developed a totally different approach to treating it. In this episode, Dr. Aron shares his groundbreaking treatment regimen and how he discovered it. Perhaps the most interesting part of it is its simplicity. It involves taking normally available medicines and combining them in such a way that can be used throughout treatment and adapted for patients of all ages. Have you reached a dead end in treating your eczema? Tell me about it in the comments!   In this episode: An explanation of Dr. Aron's unorthodox approach to diluting medicines when treating eczema Why treating the root cause of eczema is the most important thing you can do The potential synergy of antibiotics and steroids for sustainability treating eczema in patients of all ages   Quotes “I have done something that confounds common sense in the sense that I've taken a steroid that we all use and is widely available, I've taken an antibiotic… and I've taken those two active products and put them in a moisturizer.” [4:21] “The skin is almost certainly infected if the condition is chronic. Sometimes I have clients who are losing their minds because they can't figure why they keep getting hives. They've had allergy testing but just can't figure out what to do. These chronic, itchy, bumpy conditions have solutions as my guest today tells us all about. Dr. Kara Fitzgerald is a mentor, a teacher, and a brilliant practitioner. She not only sees patients but also teaches clinicians. With a postdoc in nutritional biochemistry and laboratory science, Dr. Kara is the author and editor for case studies in integrative and functional medicine. She's the co-author of the e-book the Methylation Diet and Lifestyle, she's on the faculty at the Institute of Functional Medicine and has her own practice in Connecticut. As Dr Kara explains, hives are caused high histamine, which is often the result of an allergic reaction, but not always. We discuss identifying the most common allergies so you can eliminate those. We also examine non-allergic factors of hives, like autoimmune disease, and how to mitigate those. There are steps you can take to counter the histamines that flood your system and cause these uncomfortable reactions. What steps do you take to treat hives? Let me know in the comments!   In this episode What hives are and why it's so bothersome Common resolutions to hives What mast cell activation is and how it leads to hives What you can do to help lower your histamine load in the face of a hives outbreak Labs to ask your doctor to run if you have chronic hives   Quotes “It's up to us to figure out two things. One - we want to figure what the triggers are, and two - we want to balance the immune system so we stop having those reactions altogether.” [3:45] “A low histamine diet is probably going to be the best for someone who's got some gut disturbance.” [8:08] “As soon as you go on a good supplement, a good antihistamine immune balancing supplement protocol and work on your diet, you'll be able to step away from relying on those medications.” [14:04] “Treating your gut, taking botanical antihistamines, lowering overall inflammation, and changing your diet. If you've tried just about every medication under the sun for your persistent skin condition and nothing seems to be working it may be because those medications are not addressing inflammation in the gut. Inflammation is part of just about every chronic skin condition, but it's often overlooked. My friend Kelsey Kinney is a registered dietician specializing in digestive and hormonal health. Kelsey works with her clients to address all sorts of digestive and hormonal diseases including balancing microbiomes, optimizing motility, regulating the HPA axis, and encouraging a healthy diet and lifestyle. She's also my go-to person for all things probiotics. It turns out that skin problems are often caused by an overgrowth of bad bacteria or a deficit of good bacteria in your microbiome. When bad bacteria get through to where they don't belong, our immune systems go on the attack and inflammation results. Looking at the microbiome and understanding what's happening in there is key to getting to the root of chronic skin conditions. Have you treated a skin condition by balancing your gut's microbiome? Many people don't realize that our skin acts as a barrier to help protect us from the outside world. When that barrier fails, it can lead to a whole host of conditions from, eczema to food allergies. I am so excited to have an expert on the skin barrier, Dr. Peter A. Lio, on this episode to talk about this important topic. Dr. Lio is a Harvard trained integrative dermatologist and clinical assistant professor of dermatology and pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He's published over 100 papers in addition to a textbook on integrative dermatology. He specializes in using moisturizers to protect and support the skin and its function as your body's outer barrier. Today we discuss how skin is the first line of defense for our bodies. It keeps out the elements of the environment that would cause a lot of damage if they made their way in. When there is a breakdown in this barrier there can be a whole host of issues. As Dr. Lio tells us, the proper use of moisturizers can play a big role in maintaining your skin barrier's functions. Do you use moisturizer to treat chronic skin conditions? Tell me about it in the comments!   In this episode What the skin barrier is and why it is important Filaggrin and its connection to eczema What you can do to protect your skin-barrier if you have a deficiency in filaggrin The connection between leaky skin and food allergies and what the research says about preventing the development of these allergies in the first place What you should keep in mind when looking for a moisturizer The role the skin barrier plays in conditions like psoriasis, rosacea, acne, and seborrheic dermatitis   Quotes “Our skin barrier is really critical to keeping our skin healthy and keeping the immune system and our other allergies in check. It's our barrier to the outside world.” [2:38] “If you have eczema, you know that you're deficient [in filaggrin], either genetically or functionally.” [6:44] “Wherever there is inflammation in the skin, the barrier is in trouble.”  [15:01]   Links Be sure to enter our incredible launch contest to win over $500 of skincare goodies! If you stop to think about it, most of the needs we are trying to get our partner to fill are the same needs that went unmet when we were children. Joyce Schafers went through her own trauma and betrayal and recognized this failing pattern, so she created a model to help other couples thrive. A best-selling author, public speaker, and life skills coach specializing in relationship counseling, Joyce has a keen ability to expose the root issues that cause relationships to fail and heal them before they do. Joyce is sharing with us her theory of the cycle of emotional pain, what happens when we are in it, and how we can get out of it. She is discussing the unconscious needs we try and fill externally, why you need to do the work to recognize and acknowledge your wounds, and managing your triggers in order to fill your own cup. Using her own experiences as a guiding light, Joyce is an advocate for awareness and using the power of choice to create the life you deserve. It is time to stop putting pressure on your partner to fill the unmet needs of your childhood and break the cycle to stop your emotional pain. Are you ready to accept yourself, flaws and all? Let us know your thoughts in the comments on the episode page!   In This Episode Defining trauma, betrayal and the cycle of emotional pain Creating the awareness and addressing your emotional needs Why you should view your triggers as opportunities to heal your trauma Strategies to break your cycle of emotional pain How unhealed traumas from childhood show up in adult needs   Quotes “The trauma when it is not addressed creates this emotional need which then creates this desire to get the emotional need met externally” (2:40) “When we’re triggered, my approach is to help that person become aware of what is actually going on, and help them debunk the story” (8:39) “When you can really like plug your own details into the cycle of emotional pain, understand exactly how it is impacting you, it is so incredibly powerful.” (15:57) “The common denominator here is me. So how our my broken bits, how is my trauma and emotional pain creating this cycle?” (22:14) “If we created our story, that's a good thing because we can create a new one. And you can create a new one by not believing the stuff we have believed in the past.”  (29:20)   Links Be one of the first 2 people to contact Joyce via her website & you will win one of her self study courses.
