Explore the connection that strong family relationships and church community have on the next generation. Dr. Terry Linhart, founder and CEO of Arbor Research Group and Executive Director of Bethel University's Extension Studies joins Jim Mason (HSLDA President) in a discussion on his various research projects. Together, they delve into an insightful discussion on the influence of familial relationships, the next generations societal well-being, and how our upbringing can shape virtues through institutional frameworks. “I think the child centered approach to education and individuality is very important. And that's the richness of why we love homeschooling, isn't it? It's the thing that we get to focus on the child and help. One of the loud cries from our research of parents in a local community is that about 20% of them just really would love to see a healthy mentor for their kid. . . That's what I see with homeschooling and my grandkids and the kids in our community [who] are involved in homeschooling. [Homeschool grads] who come to Bethel have this sense of enthusiasm for the future. I think that's contagious.”—Dr. Terry Linhart

If a group, business, family, or relationship is going to stand the test of time, then learning how to resolve conflict is critical to its success. However, we don't hear or say "I'm sorry" very often. We live in an anger of age and drama and there are few models for us in how to apologize in healthy ways. We expect people to "just get over it" eventually.  Research shows that even the best leaders make mistakes as they push forward and take chances. But they also know how to admit they were mistakes and keep leading forward. Being decisive has risks and when the best leaders can admit that they made a mistake, they usually find that others rally around that with greater certainty than around leaders who act like they're always right. Because we all make mistakes. We all wrong others. And we need to get the apology thing "right."  The content for this episode comes from Terry's book, The Self-Aware Leader, and the research of Elena L. Botelho and Kim R. Powell found in their book, The CEO Next Door: The 4 Behaviors that Transform Ordinary People.  Terry discussed The Five Temptations of a CEO by Patrick Lencioni, a fantastic leadership fable to read for anyone who leads others.    Ask a question for Terry to answer next week! You can be on a future podcast if you ask a good question that will be helpful to others. What if I told you that you had complete control over one of the main reasons people are successful in life? Too often we attribute success to talent, tireless hard work, and luck. Those certainly can contribute, but they aren't the main reason. They aren't the "ace card" that we're all wishing we had in those we work alongside. In addition to being able to make good decisions (see episode 14), a successful person has to be RELIABLE. Reliability is what seperates people in the workplace, the nonprofit world, and school from others. I talk about why reliability matters in this episode, share the four elements that contribute to reliability, and provide the next steps for us to work at becoming more reliable. The content for this episode comes from the research of Elena L. Botelho and Kim R. CEO's live in a unique space and they don't show up at conferences or on social media. If you want to catch one for an interview, you have to show up at his/her workplace. I have wanted to interview Kip Wieland ever since I once heard him say that CEO's have to find a personal balance between serenity and enterprise if they are to survive. So I made the trip to his factory. I wanted to learn more about what he meant because his comment came at a time when I was trying to find a similar balance. I also wanted to learn how such a creative person like Kip could effectively lead the administrative team of one the country's most innovative furniture companies. If you've flown American, Delta, Jet Blue or other airlines, visited Disneyworld or Google headquarters, or sat in a hospital chair, you've benefited from the work of Wieland Designs or Six Inch. And you'll benefit from the insights Kip shares from the top as he works to mesh his unique personality with the day-to-day responsibilities of a CEO.  Many of us have responsibilities that keep us up at night. It's tough to know when to turn off our minds and the lights and it's even more difficult to find peace when the waters of commerce or nonprofit leadership get rough. And if they're not rough now, they will be sometime. Some of us are also very creative and yet tasked with deeply administrative routines and tasks. Kip provides a rich perspective on all of this and this interview will be an encouragement to you no matter what your work responsibilities are.  Wieland Designs - http://www.wielanddesigns.com/ Six Inch North America - https://www.sixinchrocks.com/ You can follow Kip on Twitter (@kipwieland).  = = = = =  Coaching with Terry Linhart is hosted by Terry Linhart, Ph.D. Terry is the author of THE SELF-AWARE LEADER and the founder of The Arbor Research Group. Some people have trouble making decisions for various reasons. Yet for leaders of all types, being decisive is one of the primary needs for those who work with them. Our special guest is Dr. Terry Linhart, author of the book The Self-Aware Leader: Discovering Your Blind Spots to Reach Your Ministry Potential. You've studied what you think you need to know before entering a career in ministry. Is there anything that is more important than knowing about hermeneutics, homiletics, theology, exegesis, and everything else you have likely learned in seminary and church ministry so far? Yes, there is. How well do you know yourself? You need to build your ministry career on the right foundation of an objective understanding of self. If you don't comprehend your strengths and weaknesses, then you won't be fully prepared to enter the crucible of ministry. Serving as a pastor is one of the toughest calls there is. But it can also be one of the most fulfilling and rewarding, especially if you have taken the time to examine both your gifts and vulnerabilities. The church needs leaders who have the clear-eyed courage to pursue the hardest part of the ministry journey: seeing yourself. The Self-Aware Leader will help you to do just that. Dr. Terry Linheart is also a speaker, consultant, and professor of Christian ministries at Bethel College in South Bend, Indiana. For over twenty-five years, Terry has led and taught about topics related to Christian ministry and organizational oversight. His youth ministry experience includes eight years in parachurch ministry with Youth for Christ and seven years as youth pastor at Hope Missionary Church in Bluffton, Indiana. He has taught at Asbury Theological Seminary, North Park University, Huntington College, Taylor University, and Alliance Graduate School in Quezon City, Philippines. Our children and teens are like sponges, created to learn. Because of where they're at developmentally, they are especially impressionable and vulnerable. One of the most effective molders of young hearts and minds in the culture. As Christian parents and youth workers, our job is to nurture them in the Christian faith so that they will grow up to be lovers and doers of the truth of Christ. In this episode, our friend Dr. Terry Linhart will help us learn about effective nurture and instruction. We also begin the podcast with some fun Christmas movie trivia, as well as discussions about fruitcake and youth culture news including the use of laptops, concussions, technical virginity, teen suicide and cyberbullying, as well as distracted driving.
