Some United Kingdom supermarkets have done away with 'best before' dates on most of their products. Others are planning to follow their lead. Research shows that best before dates lead to food waste, as still-edible items are frequently tossed in the trash. And with food inflation making waste more costly, it seems like an idea worth considering...So a new survey asked Canadians just that. Would they buy products without best before dates? Which ones? Do they ever consume products past those dates? The results illustrate Canada's culture of food safety, but also the hypocrisy in some of our food decisions.(You can find the full survey right here.)GUEST: Sylvain Charlebois, Senior Director, Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University, co-host of The Food Professor podcast

When an architect and a designer collaborate, the results can be greater than either of them, or the clients, expected. But it can also be a difficult relationship, with clashing visions, disputed budgets, and creative misunderstandings. Two top talents—architect Gil Schafer and interior designer David Netto—discuss the success of their past collaborations, why a shared vision is important but different perspectives can be even more powerful, how to turn inevitable friction points into creative opportunities, and why window treatments and mantels so often become bones of contention. "For Liz, her connection to mother earth is everything. As a child, she lived between California and Mexico until she was 14. She spent part of her childhood playing, dancing, and brewing potions in the forest of Northern California. The other part of her childhood was spent in the community with family, friends, and elders in a small pueblo just south of Guadalajara, Mexico. As the first of her social circle to get a job in high school, people began to seek to her for career advice in 2010. What started with introductory resume and interview prep ended in comprehensively coaching people in self-advocacy, leadership skills, conflict resolution, boundaries, etc.Somewhere along the way in her 20's Liz was sucked into the hustle culture of corporate life working in Marketing and Communications, she climbed the corporate latter, made 6 figures, owned a custom home, custom pool, and drove an Alfa Romeo. She lived a very consumptive lifestyle of careless accumulation and forgot her earth momma roots. During this period, she had accomplished more than she could have imagined by 27 but was deep in a pit of depression and anxiety. She describes this time as her period of purgatory. Today, she recalls that season of her life with warm eyes and a large grin as she reflects, "mother earth was just calling me home."She balanced her coaching business while also working a demanding corporate job as head of internal communications for supply chain at the largest high fashion retailer in Northern America. She eventually had to quit her 9-5 life to tend to her growing coaching practice. She is now living in rural Upstate New York, where she called in her soul family of healers, herbalists, and teachers. Liz found her way back in harmony with mother earth and is on the path of becoming an herbalist as well. Liz brings a soulful approach to the collective about how to show up as a divine, grounded, strong, boundaried version of yourself while working in dominant corporate cultures. With a focus on shadow work, self discovery, self advocacy, and boundaries, Fem Home Ec's mission is to teach the art of coming home to your body and intuition while living in harmony with mother earth and the structures of our dominance culture." Marissa Alley, CPA Australia's Executive General Manager People and Culture, drops in to discuss how businesses and employees can navigate this difficult environment. Dr. Rob and Tami help define what the definition of true recovery is in this week's episode. If you or a spouse is ‘sober' that doesn't always mean they're on a path of recovery. Dr. Rob shares some signs that show you're actually making progress towards becoming a better person. Dr. Rob and Tami also talk about why it can take so long for a sober addict to actually ‘be' a good person that can connect empathically with their spouse. TAKEAWAYS: [0:25] Is remorse necessary for recovery and healing? My SA hasn't demonstrated any remorse throughout his recovery. [4:35] What is the definition of recovery? [6:25] My husband has trouble connecting emotionally. Will he ever be able to authentically connect with me? [10:30] Just because they're sober doesn't mean they're automatically going to be nice to you. This process takes time. [11:05] My heart still aches that my SA acted out for the last 15+ years with friends of mine. I'm having trouble pretending it never happened. [12:00] Dr. Rob can tell based on how an addict in treatment talks and whether they're talking sobriety seriously or not. When they leave treatment, that's just the first step on a long journey. [15:00] Unfortunately, you won't be able to look at this person again. [18:10] As a betrayed spouse, your whole world has been poisoned. It makes sense why the brain can't just ‘forget' that. [19:25] What is hyperphantasia? [23:10] An affair partner reached out to me. I blocked her. My spouse is still upset that this woman reached out and wants to verify whether one of this woman's children is biologically mine. This would mean unblocking the affair partner to ask her. What can I do to comfort her? [25:25] Betrayed spouses can hyper fixate on the why and get stuck in the process. They want to bring the affair partner in thinking it'll lead to closure. It won't. This week Frankie Tortora and Steve Folland have a chat in response to a question from inclusion and equality consultant Beth Cox. She says: “How do I get into the zone earlier in the day?Pre-child my working hours were 10-7, with my best work done between 3 and 7 - it took me that long to really get into the flow. The thing I've struggled with since having a child at nursery and school is that I tend to hit the elusive 'flow' approximately 20 minutes before I have to pick up my child. Pre-child I could have leant into it and created my best work, but now I have to drop what I'm doing and take another day to get back into that zone again (if at all). When I mentioned this in the DIFTK community, Tori Beat felt the same. She said:"I get so frustrated when I feel like I'm about to have a mild epiphany and then POW, it's pick up time. It's akin to when one of those magicians whips a tablecloth from underneath a beautifully laid table but, instead of leaving everything in miraculous good order, EVERYTHING IS SMASHED ALL OVER THE FLOOR. And I've got to tidy up."It is so frustrating, and I just don't know how to change it. Even now, I've got a clear day for focused work but it's only 10am and I'm clearly very distracted. My son goes to a childminder two days a week after school so I do have two 'long' days, but even then the flow doesn't happen until about 4pm (I rarely get it on the short days). I'm a solo parent so can't take turns with a partner to just work through, and rarely get child-free time other than that I pay for, which doesn't help. HELP. How can I take less time to get in the zone of doing my best work?” What would your advice be? You don't hear me! is the emotional cry underneath the explosions and irrational pleadings of 7 ½ yr. old Jude. His parents have come a long way in being patient, but they get stuck and threaten punishment when he refuses to do what he has to do. They fear he will push others away with his demands, will always have to be right, and will have no friends. Renee and Gary have recorded episodes of Jude's raging that are included. When we discuss how to respond to the need under his screaming, Renee and Gary fear they will have to give in to what he wants. Today we're talking to Republican U.S. Senator from Florida Marco Rubio about all the major issues affecting America. We cover the encroaching influence of China, the baby formula shortage and high gas prices, and the war in Ukraine, as well as culture war issues and why so many Republicans are hesitant to participate. For each of these topics, Senator Rubio explains the challenges facing America and how the GOP would go about addressing them, in contrast to what the Biden administration is doing, which seems to just be making everything worse. This week, in episode 107, Shawn Busse, Jay Goltz, and William Vanderbloemen discuss whether the old line about hiring slow and firing fast makes sense during a labor shortage. As William puts it, “What if you do have to hire fast? How do you do that? What if you do want to keep people even if you might have wanted to get rid of them before? How do you do that without ruining your culture?” Plus: How do you know it's really time for someone to go? And what happens when employees share their salaries with each other? Anything good? And as we all binge watch the real life dramas about WeWork and Theranos, the question inevitably arises: Is it still okay to fake it until you make it? And if so, where do you draw the line?
