#585 Today I'm talking with Caleb Wojcik. Caleb and I go way back, and he's been on the show a couple of times. A while back he talked about creating videos and getting started on YouTube. More recently he came on to talk about SwitchPod, the physical product that we co-invented and co-launched on Kickstarter to the tune of $438,000 from backers. I wanted Caleb to come on the show today for a few reasons. Number one, to give you an update on that company, where it's at, how it's doing, and how it's performing. But more than that, Caleb has another update to share. Recently he and his wife have given birth to twins. They also have a toddler, so parenting has definitely affected Caleb's work in many different ways. Caleb is here to share honest and real insights on what it's like to be an entrepreneur while raising small children, to give us an update on SwitchPod, and to talk about our new course, YouTube From Scratch. #427: This episode of the SPI Podcast is about the business at SwitchPod, a physical product my videographer, Caleb Wojcik—who joins me—and I created. From an idea in 2017, to a $418K Kickstarter launch in 2019, to building and shipping it, to placement on Amazon and retail stores... It's been awesome, and we want to share what we're learning along the way to help you fast-forward your own physical product success. Podcast show notes available here: https://www.smartpassiveincome.com/session427
https://fizzleshow.co – Caleb Wojcik saw a need for a sturdy switchable handheld tripod at a video conference back in 2017. He hadn't built a physical product before, but that didn't stop him or business partner Pat Flynn from launching the super successful SwitchPod six months ago. Find out how they built and launched the SwitchPod as Caleb explains everything in this episode.
While on our first stop of the sabbatical year in San Diego, I got to visit Caleb Wojcik in his home studio. In addition to this episode, we also recorded an episode with me on the Caleb Wojcik Show which publishes today. Caleb is an incredible filmmaker who has worked with clients like Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income and ConvertKit (filming their I Am A Blogger series as well as the Craft + Commerce conference). He also filmed our own seanwes conference. Caleb regularly teaches what he's learned building a successful six-figure client-services business with his podcast, courses, and YouTube channel. In today's episode, I ask Caleb what he would do to get his first client if he was starting from scratch. If you're looking to sell your filmmaking services, this episode is for you. Aside from client services, Caleb is also the inventor of SwitchPod. SwitchPod is a minimal, versatile, handheld tripod for vloggers that raised over $400,000 on Kickstarter. We talk about going from client services to physical products and the future of SwitchPod. Caleb recently set up what many would consider to be a dream home video studio in the past couple of years. But like many of us, he still struggles with overthinking content creation and production quality. We talk about some tips for overcoming overthinking and how to make videos more easily.
This podcast episode was not planned. While staying in San Diego during my sabbatical, my friend Caleb Wojcik invited me to his house to record a podcast. Caleb lives in Encinitas (about a one-hour train ride from where we were staying in downtown San Diego). Caleb and I recorded two podcasts: one for his show, and another for mine. You'll see that interview with Caleb on the podcast feed in the next day or two. I was getting ready to take the 3:00pm train back to the city after recording with Caleb, when I received a new message on Instagram from Calvin Rosser: “Hey dude, think I saw you're in San Diego. I'm in Encinitas (north of San Diego) if you want to get together. Fairly free during the evenings this week. Just working and surfing.” I'd met Calvin once last year at Craft + Commerce conference. We got coffee together the last morning before I went to the airport. Calvin has been a nomadic traveler for many years now. Over coffee last year in Boise, Idaho, he shared stories of his travels, and emphasized the importance of going with the flow and not having an overly rigid plan. “You may find that you love a place and want to stay longer.” At the time, he spoke of settling down. Several years of traveling nomadically was an incredible experience, but he was ready to slow down and stay in one place for awhile. We both just happened to be in Encinitas at the same exact time. How perfect was it that he messaged me without knowing? This must have been where he settled down last year. Calvin laughed. “I actually just got here a day ago.” “What happened to settling down?” “I still want to. I miss having friends I see regularly and with whom I can go deep.” We met at a coffee shop in Encinitas, but Calvin hardly sat down. Right away, he asked if we'd be willing to go somewhere else. “I actually have a car, but I prefer to walk. There's a place nearby that's really nice—it's about a 14-minute walk from here. Is that okay?” Calvin has a thoughtful tone, as you'll hear in the recording. He doesn't mince words, and he doesn't waste any time getting straight to deep and meaningful matters. Before I know it, we walk through an iron gate into another world. I'd never been in a meditation garden, but visiting at golden hour is everything you'd imagine: fish, flowers, and colorful foliage abound as you walk through winding pathways and up stairs. As we go up, the trees give way to a bright sky with a sun that will set within the hour. We find a bench at the top in a little clearing that reveals a stunning panorama of the Pacific Ocean. We are high up on the cliff. “I'm trying to remove guilt when not working,” Calvin says. “Do you mind if I record our conversation?” I ask. “We don't have to do anything with the recording, but if we end up discussing something worth sharing, then at least we have the option of making it available as a podcast.” Calvin doesn't mind. He almost seems indifferent. I hand him the lavalier microphone to clip to his shirt. He doesn't seem phased. We don't begin with any formal introductions. The tone of our conversation remains the same. We just continue talking. “With my work, I feel that there's an endless list of things to do. When I'm not working, I should be focused on that list of things to do.” The guilt. As a recovering workaholic, I know it all too well. There were only ever two modes: 1. Working 2. Feeling guilty about not working I didn't like feeling guilty. Calvin's the same. He's internally driven, and unsatisfied with anything less than reaching his full potential. That was me, and why I worked 18-hour days for a decade. Then I burned out. “The times I feel the guilt the least, and the times I feel most alive, is when I'm connecting one-on-one with someone else,” Calvin says. “I'm able to engage with that in a way where the other stuff sort of melts away.” The seanwes podcast has not, historically,
Today, I’m really happy to have my friends Pat Flynn and Caleb Wojcik on the show. The reason why I’m having both of these 2 on today is to talk about their incredibly awesome invention, the Switchpod. In fact, I have one on my desk right now and it’s the main handheld tripod that I use for all of my videos. In today’s episode, we’re going to break down every aspect of their invention from how they got the idea, how they manufactured it and how they managed to exceed their Kickstarter campaign in just a day. What are your tried and true ways to gain new clients? We’re often so desperate for income that we grab at anything and everything without really asking “Is this project right for me?” or “Do I even really want to do this work?). Caleb Wojcik shares some tips on lining up work with clients you really want to work with, in his case, Pat Flynn and ConvertKit. Caleb Wojcik is the founder of the DIY Video Guy, Caleb Wojcik Films, and co-founder of Fizzle.co. His background includes a degree in business, and he can include Chris Guillebeau, the NFL, MLB and the Rose Bowl as clients. He started as a wedding film photographer but slowly grew his business to include a film production company, a podcast, and the many amazing courses he offers on DIY Video Guy. On today’s episode, we dive deep into how to connect with the people you really want to work with, the different versions of networking and which will work best for your goals, and how to get recurring clients as opposed to one time gigs. Caleb’s insights into the business mindset are priceless and can definitely help you to scale your business according to your needs while charging what you’re worth. Things like raising prices can be scary and often intimidating but Caleb breaks it down in a way where you can do small things to help raise your perceived value so that you can increase your prices without the client batting an eye. What is your go-to method for finding new clients? Do you do more business through direct to client marketing, agencies or referrals? Leave a comment below! In the episode: How to connect with people you really want to work with How to make smart gear purchases When and how to grow your team sustainably Some great online tools to help your business How to get recurring clients instead of one-off’s Steps you can take to increase your value and prices Quotes: “The biggest thing for me has been knowing the right people and building relationships years in advance of ever working with them... Try to get introduced but putting yourself in the same physical location or at events, like conferences, as other people that are doing cool stuff that’s how I have built my network of clients even before I needed them.” (7:02) “Two of my favorite things to do at a conference are to introduce people: So when you start to meet people and you meet a new person, introduce that person to someone that might overlap well with whatever it is they have going on because once you become that connector at an event, then people will kind of reciprocate in the same way and introduce you to people. And when I am ending a conversation with someone at an event or conference, I try to ask do you know of one person here that you think I should meet that would be perfect for X, Y or Z and then that gives you the next person to go talk to.” (13:10) “Really investing in your peers, certain people at your level, in a few years those people are going to be speaking at events and those people are going to be starting companies that can hire you. So, that’s kind of the process I have now.” (14:35) “I think it is important to be confident in your pricing and if you do play the low pricing game you’re just setting yourself up to compete with a bunch of other people as opposed to if your pricing yourself higher, typically those clients are better and you have less competition at that price point.” (32:07) Links: DIY Guy Video Caleb Wojcik Films Fizzle.co Follow Caleb Wojcik on Youtube | Twitter | Instagram Asana Active Campaign Boomerang for Gmail Check out the full show notes page Stay up to date with everything we're doing at Studio Sherpas

YouTube Certified Expert, Tim Schmoyer from Video Creators TV teams up with the DIY Video Guy, Caleb Wojcik to bring you the essentials of shooting a quality YouTube Video with gear that transcends any budget. Whether you’re just starting your channel and looking for inexpensive, quality suggestions, or you’ve been growing your channel for a while and are ready for a change, we have product suggestions and shooting tips that will be sure to make a huge difference in your video quality, performance, and audience’s response. Does Gear Really Matter and Does it Make that Big of a Difference? In the YouTube realm, it does. People will judge you, your video and your channel immediately based on sound, picture and lighting quality. Caleb points out that “we’re trained from birth to watch TV and Movies that are highly produced… Having quality gear sets you apart and viewers immediately take you more seriously”. Is One Aspect More Important than Another? Or Are They All Equally Important? Caleb recommends spreading your budget across these three areas: Audio Camera Lens Lighting He states that while all three are important and compliment each other, Audio trumps lighting and camera lens when it comes to pleasing your audience. Poor quality sound can be so distracting during a video that the viewer will turn it off within the first few seconds. So when it comes to prioritizing one area, we recommend sound first, but picture and lighting are still extremely important in conveying quality to your audience. Tips: You Can Have Good Lighting Without Spending Any Money (8:00) Vlogging: Invest in an audio setup that can plug right into a camera. (12:29) Syncing video is only intimidating if your software can’t help you. (12:40) What is a Mirrorless camera? (16:45) You can start shooting in 4k for around a $1000 but as far as people viewing it in 4k… That might not be for a while. The following links direct to B&H Photo, Video and Pro Audio a paid sponsor of Video Creators. Under $1000 Budget: Camera Lens: Canon PowerShot (S110, S120 orS130). These can shoot in HD and help you get started. (10:10) Audio: RodeVideo Micro orRoad Video Mic Pro. Sony ECM CS3 Record separately if you can, because most cameras have a very tiny microphone. You can use the Tascam DR-05or the Zoom H1 to sync your audio and video later. Lighting: Cowboy Studio orFancier Studio ($100-150). Editing Software (Apple): Final Cut Pro X Editing Software (PC): Adobe Premiere Pro CC $1000 - $4000 budget: DSLR Cameras: Canon T3I T4I T5I 60D 70D (best option) XLR’s C100 or Mark II Lowest option for Canon 4k: XC10 - $2000 with built in lens and image stabilization. First of all, I just wanted to wish all of my listeners a happy new year! I also wanted to thank everyone who has read, liked, or shared one of my blog posts on LinkedIn over the past year. In early December, LinkedIn’s editors named me as one of 90 top writers of the year, an honor that took me completely by surprise. So thanks for reading my work on LinkedIn. And while you’re there, send me a request to connect! So today’s episode is all about video. You’re a writer, so why should you care about video? Isn’t video expensive and difficult to produce? What kind of equipment should you buy? Should you script it out in advance, or just shoot and edit? These are some of the questions I discuss with my guest today, Caleb Wojcik. Caleb is a video producer who spent several years filming games for major national level sports leagues before setting up his own business teaching video production, marketing, and strategy for the web, which he calls DIY Video Guy. He also runs Caleb Wojcik Films, a video production studio. Caleb produces videos for some of the biggest names in the online entrepreneurial space, like Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income. Through his web TV show and podcast, Caleb shares incredibly useful tips for making great videos by yourself, without having to hire a large and expensive crew. I’ve been following Caleb for a number of years now and I’ve learned a lot from him about video production. And if you ever need to go deeper on the topics that he covers, you can check out one of the excellent online courses he offers. Today's question comes from Jon, who is setting up a video studio in the corner of his home office. What some space-saving advice do I have to recommend? In this episode I mention a bunch of photography tools, including using a wide angle lens, using bokeh effect (works better on a standard lens), using LED lights to save on space and heat, folding light reflectors, and ring lights. The lenses I mentioned are the Canon 1.4F 50 mm or 35mm lens. For purchasing camera equipment, Amazon is a good resource, as is B&H Photo (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/). YouTube is best for public videos and is the most cost-effective option (http://youtube.com/). Wistia is a more expensive option, but it will give you the best data and is ideal for paid communities (http://wistia.com/). Vimeo is another good option for videos in a paid course (http://vimeo.com/). Also, hear why I think you should upload videos directly to Facebook. In this episode we're going to hear from a guy who has made the indiepreneur jump several times. In fact just recently before we recorded this episode he left a company he co-founded to start all over working for himself. The man in question is, of course, Caleb Wojick from DIYvideoguy.com. Caleb is one of my favorite people and over the last few months since we recorded this conversation has become a friend. He's helped me through a ton of stuff and this episode is a bit of a break from the norm in that it's literally packed from start to finish with great insight into how to make a living doing your own thing. Caleb teaches creatives how to make better web videos and makes videos for start-ups and solopreneurs. Here are some of my favorite bits from the show: On Producing Content and Building an Audience “Everything I do starts with writing, so the more I write, the more I can produce. If I just sit in front of a microphone and have a topic, that's really hard.” “The first thing you need to do is grow an audience and that has to be on a specific topic and it just takes time. And until you have an audience of people who care about what you're saying, it's going to be hard to make money.” On Finding Your Thing and Getting Good At It “It been over 10 years of me searching for this thing. I was just searching and searching. And I still don't know what this will look like in 10 years. I think that you eventually learn that you have fall in love with not knowing what's going to happen.” “You don't have to decide you're entire life today, but you can decide what you're going to do with your life right now and focus on that.” “If you commit to something for long enough, you're going to get good at it.” “I think a commitment to improvement is key to [success].” On Self-employment and Continually Improving “If you aren't question what you're doing with your life, I think that you've gone into this lazy, lackadaisical, non-caring mode. And I think you need to question what you're doing. Not to the extent of depression and anxiety, but to wake up in the morning and think, how am I feeling, how am I doing, how am portraying myself to my audience and is there anything I can improve on.” “One of the biggest things I've learned over the past three years of working for myself is that you can work the burnout schedule, but eventually you hit a wall. So for me I had to learn how to recharge.” “The whole idea of committing yourself to something for a long time has greatly influenced my current path of getting better at stuff.” “Spend less time planning and more time doing stuff. And doing stuff publicly. Share the kind of things you're making. It's important to plan stuff out, but unless you starting doing stuff, you're not going to get better at it.” As always, I had a great time talking to Caleb. Enjoy the show! Show Notes Min 35:54: As an indiepreneur, how do you figure out what “work” leads to money and what doesn't? Min 38: What it's really like to to be self-employed. The Agents of Change: SEO, Social Media, and Mobile Marketing for Small Business
There’s no question that video is a critical marketing tool, from raising our online visibility, to improving our SEO, to driving more qualified traffic, and generating leads and sales. But not everyone has an unlimited budget for Hollywood-level production values. How can you create engaging, effective videos with a limited budget and with limited time in the day? Well, we brought in the DIY Video guy himself, Caleb Wojcik, to share his secrets on how you can build your business with video, without breaking the bank. http://www.themarketingagents.com/73
One of the most effective ways to show potential customers how your product could be useful to them is to feature it in a promo video. Well-made promo videos can be inspiring, insightful, and fun. The problem is, video can take a bit of time to learn how to do right. Luckily I have a good friend who runs his own video production studio. His name is Caleb Wojcik; you might know him from Fizzle, which he recently moved on from to run his studio full time. If there's one person I'd recommend to take video production advice from it's definitely Caleb. I recently asked him to hang out with me and talk video for an hour; we dug into gear, production techniques, and some sweet hacks to make your editing workflow quicker. This episode will be especially insightful if you're thinking about making a promo video for your product. Enjoy!Show NotesCaleb Wojcik's DIY Video Guide – if you're getting into making promo videos for your business, I can't recommend this guide enough. Caleb Wojcik's gear guide – we talked a bit about gear, but it's way too easy to waste time figuring out what gear to buy instead of actually making videos. Luckily Caleb's done all the work for you in this free guide. Pat Flynn's website – we mentioned our friend Pat a few times; here's his site if you haven't had a chance to see his work yet. Wistia's “down and dirty” lighting kit – for less than $100 you can make your own professional lighting kit, my friends at Wistia show you how.Caleb and me hanging out – the live hangout this podcast recording is taken from.
Caleb was on the fast track to success. He dedicated his collegiate career to building a glowing resume complete with internships, grades, and extracurricular involvement. He parlayed that momentum into a secure job at a multinational American company (Boeing). From there he worked hard to earn his MBA on the side. All signs point straight […]
Caleb Wojcik is a DIY video expert, filmmaker, and the brains behind the incredibly successful and entertaining online business training platform that is Fizzle.co, which provides people with honest business advice — so if you’re interested in developing the skills to support a life to travel, your first month only costs $1. So check it out — I have Caleb on the show to just chat about his travels — and get his stories. A while back he started a website called Pocket Changed which was about improving your finances to help you do the things you want to with your life. On that list was travel, which is something he has quite a background in. He didn't travel much as a kid, never leaving the country through high school. Going to college, he knew he wanted to explore somewhere in Asia and his school --Michigan State -- encouraged study abroad for the majority of its students. He carefully arranged his studies so that he would qualify for the abroad program in Japan, thus sending him on his first international trip. Today, he lives in San Diego with a business that supports the ability to take trips like 6-weeks in Italy - living and working as he went. Travel has always been a part of his plan. Subscribe on iTunes, Stitcher Radio, Soundcloud or TuneIn What We Cover: How Caleb organized his studies to qualify for travel, making it a priority not just in his life, but his education. Caleb's current lifestyle which affords him the ability to travel whenever he wants, and work from the road. On this episode of the Online Marketing Made Easy Podcast, we talked all about video creation and editing. I know a few of you instantly felt a little anxious when you read those words, because video is not usually at the top of anyone’s “favorite things to do” list - or at least that's the case for me! I’ve been creating videos ever since I started my online business, but it’s always been a tough thing for me. I don’t particularly like to see myself on video and let’s face it, video is a lot of work - from both the creation and editing sides. And yet video is very important for online marketers, which is why I invited my friend, Caleb Wojcik to be on the show. Caleb promised me that he would give some tips to make video easier, and he delivered on his promise! In this episode, here’s what we’ll cover: Caleb's progression from screencast videos to using multiple cameras The best type of video to start with How your audience determines how polished your videos need to be How to make videos using PowerPoint or Keynote How to make video editing faster and less painful The reason why 60% of the people that Caleb surveyed don't create video A trick for finding mistakes in the videos you create The benefits of editing backwards The sweet spot when it comes to video length Why you shouldn't put videos that people will pay to see on YouTube Where to host your videos And so much more! Key Takeaways If you're nervous about creating videos, screencasts are a great way to start. The best screen recording software is Screenflow for Mac and Camtasia for windows. It at all possible, when shooting video, sit facing a window. If natural light isn't available, position lighting directly in front of you, at a 30-45-degree angle. Light shining directly on you, you'll end up with a shadow from the camera on your face. When using your phone to shoot talking head videos, be sure to use a mic, such as Rode Smartlav to improve sound quality. DIY videos are fine, especially when they're not being used as part of a paid program. For paid programs, it's better to go pro if possible. Matt and Andrew were excited to talk to Caleb because they met through Fizzle.co. Fizzle is an online resource and forum for entrepreneurs looking to start an online business. Because of what Caleb helped to build, Listen, Money Matters exists. Caleb manages the finances for several small businesses including Fizzle, his website, CalebWojcik.com and his wife’s photography company JenWojcikPhotography.com. Caleb recommends paying small business taxes quarterly. It saves you getting a big bill at the end of the year that you weren’t expecting. Managing finances for your business doesn’t mean you have to do it alone. A skilled accountant can make the process much easier. Xero is a web-based program that is a sexier version of QuickBooks. You can track spending and even create invoices through the program. For his personal finances, Caleb used a spreadsheet for two and a half years, hand entering every transaction. His wife understandably didn’t want to use the spreadsheet so they started using Mint. Eventually, they plan to use You Need A Budget. Caleb still misses his spreadsheet though. If you’re thinking about making the leap from working a 9-5 to working for yourself, having six to twelve months of expenses saved is a good rule of thumb. Managing money for your small business is one of the most important aspects of running it but it doesn’t have to be the most time consuming if you partner with a good accountant and use some of the great technology designed to make it easier. Caleb Wojcik is one of the three co-founders of Fizzle (along with Corbett Barr and Chase Reeves), an online business training program that I've participated in and talked about a little bit on this blog and on Twitter. Before working on Fizzle and embracing a life of entrepreneurship, Caleb lived amongst the cubicles… working for a large aerospace company. During that time, he actually had the difficult job of creating spreadsheets with names of people to be laid off. (Now he actually helps teach people how to quit your job, which is ironic.) Disenchanted with corporate work, Caleb founded the blog PocketChanged.com (recently re-branded as CalebWojcik.com), which led to working with Corbett Barr, the creator of ThinkTraffic.net. Think Traffic was kind enough to publish my guest post 5 Ways Copying Politicians Can Grow Your Blog earlier this year) In this episode, Caleb and I discuss: how he went from a corporate career to cubicle renegade why Caleb became an entrepreneur instead of continuing to work in the corporate world how you can quit your job to become an entrepreneur even if you have large amounts of debt the importance of connecting with other people online how Caleb was able to turn a side blog into a new job which made him much happier "By the way, it's pronounced “WAH-JICK," rhymes with “LOGIC.”

I realized that I never really introduced myself, talked about my background, or how I came to be an entrepreneur (even though I was dead set against it my whole life). In this episode I'll discuss my small town upbringing, four years of building the perfect resumé in college, why I stayed in my cubicle for nearly four years, what I do now for a living, and what 2013 has in store for this podcast.
