To kick off the New Year, we're sharing a podcast that we think Hit Parade listeners are going to love: Broken Record. Check out this episode with singer/songwriter Norah Jones, co-hosted by Blue Note Records President Don Was. Norah has been with Blue Note Records since releasing her juggernaut 2002 debut album, Come Away With Me. In this conversation, Norah details her musical upbringing and what it was like striking it big with her debut album. She also performs for us, and talks about the musical freedom she's found as part of the Blue Note family. Blue Note is one of the first and longest standing institutions of jazz music. Since its formation in 1939 the label has put out albums by Robert Glasper, Lee Morgan, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Gergory Porter, Bobby McFerrin, and many more. Learn more about your ad choices. Jesse Harris belongs to a generation of New York singer songwriters who came of age in the late nineties. He has made over 20 solo albums that walk the line between folk, jazz, pop, Brazilian and art rock. He's also a much sought after co writer and collaborator who has written songs for and or with many others like Madeleine Peyroux, Melody Gardot, Lana del Rey, and most famously Norah Jones. Jesse was already well into his career when he met a young Norah Jones on a road trip through Texas and played his songs for her. He had already been signed and dropped from a major label with his band Once Blue (a project he started with Rebecca Martin, and which also featured musicians Ben Street, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Kenny Wollesen), and had already been exploring a space in his songwriting that played in between jazz and pop. But that chance encounter with Jones, who was still a student at the University of North Texas at the time, was the one that would change the course of Jesse's career. They stayed in touch and began working together when Jones eventually moved to New York. Her debut album, 2002's Come Away With Me contained five of his songs including the now ubiquitous standard “Don't Know Why”. He also played guitar on the record. Their partnership has endured over the years - Jones and Harris have written together on and off ever since then - but it was that first record that arguably redirected the sound of certain strains of popular music and jazz for a generation. The success of Come Away With Me also opened new doors for Harris as a solo artist and a composer. Ultimately he started a label (Secret Sun, named after a solo album of the same name) to put out the projects that he produced for himself and others, and recently has been dividing his time between New York and Paris. Jesse is a relentlessly prolific songwriter, someone for whom songs are like air and water; they are simply a fact of life. Here he talks about Paper Flower, his most recent album recorded in Paris with American and French musicians, his approach to songwriting (“writer's block is a choice”) and production, taking things as they come, confession versus craft, venturing into the unconscious, and whether it is his fate to work with female artists. www.third-story.com https://www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story

With 20 albums under his own name and his instrumental group Cosmo, the man knows how to make a record. He is a wildly accomplished and successful songwriter. For example in 2003 Harris he received the Grammy Award for Song Of The Year for Norah Jones' breakout hit “Don't Know Why,” from her debut album, Come Away With Me, which has sold almost 30 million copies worldwide. Versions of his songs have been sung by artists as diverse as Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Cat Power, Feist, The Black Keys, M. Ward, Brad Mehldau, Bright Eyes, Smokey Robinson, George Benson, Pat Metheny, Kandace Springs, and Solomon Burke. I mean WHAT a list that is! Songwriting collaborations have included Maya Hawke, John Zorn, Madeleine Peyroux, Melody Gardot, Papooz, and Lana Del Rey. If you didnt think you knew Jesse, I bet you've heard his writing out there in the known universe of sound and by gosh he's a real potent force. Even after all this success, he is very mild mannered and thoughtful in this nice rambling interview. He's generous with his knowledge and a very easy guy to get along with. I must say I hang my pod head slightly when reflecting on how old this interview is. Like a fine wine, I hope it's benefited from a little time in the digital cellar. Drink in the wisdoms y'all !

Ein gutes Beispiel dafür ist auch der romantische Song "What Am I To You?". __________ Über diese Songs vom Album “Feels Like Home” wird im Podcast gesprochen (11:42) – "Sunrise" (18:42) – "What Am I To You?" In order to grow and be more than me, I need to open, unite, and receive, Something unknown and beyond my control, That will forever change my identity. ☉ Now, a couple more things. I don't know how clear I was that the energy/intensity is building between now and the partial solar eclipse next Tuesday. We can expect it to REALLY increase when the Sun and Venus exit pleasant Libra and enter the dragon's lair of Scorpio. I'm encouraging myself and encouraging you to raise your tolerance for intensity and not hang on thinking that "this" will be over soon and things will "go back to normal." That can lead to further stress when they don't. Secondly, I sense that "lines will be drawn," and people/nations will take their positions with the solar eclipse, but the real shit show is gonna be the total lunar eclipse on November 8. That is when all the subconscious fears and reactions to the solar eclipse can either support or destroy the new impulses/paths conceived with the new energy that comes in with the solar eclipse. Third, I didn't even mention that Saturn stations and goes direct on Saturday! OMG! Bad Kaypacha! He is just hanging out at 18+ degrees Aquarius from September 30 to November 12 (SQUARE THE NODES AND LUNAR ECLIPSE)! This indicates that choices, decisions, and actions need to be taken that break old relationship patterns so that new ways can take root and grow. So let's chill out with Norah Jones and "Come Away With Me." I like the whole album and thought of her other song, "Turn Me On," for Scorpio LOL: https://youtu.be/WmRT4TVCxG8 On the other hand, you may be feeling DOWN! https://youtu.be/LXOIIKNVGSw LAST SPOT!! Episode 66 of Ranking Tracks is back with another debut album from Norah Jones, Come Away With Me. It was my first time listening to the album in full and lots of great songs!
Norah Jones talks about the 20th anniversary edition of her Grammy award-winning record Come Away With Me and how her songwriting has developed over the past two decades. The singer, songwriter and pianist also discusses her past collaborations with Danger Mouse and Jeff Tweedy, and explains why the bathtub is the best place to write songs.
Few records define an era of grown-up pop music as Come Away With Me by Norah Jones. It appeared as if from nowhere in February 2002 and was suddenly everywhere. Blending contemporary and traditional, standards and covers, delivered in Jones' warm, disarming tones, Come Away With Me was an immediate hit, a balm in the post 9/11 world of hatred and warfare, something real and tangible in an unreal universe, a best kept secret to share. It seemed so unusual yet so familiar. It offered comfort. But what was this sound and who was it made by?
Printemps 2002.
After her fourth album The Fall in 2009 proved to be a departure from the well known blend of blues-jazz-country-pop, Norah Jones received a fan letter:“After I made The Fall, I received the sweetest letter from a fan in Argentina, but it was also criticising me as well. It said “I'm a really big fan but would you please go back to singing the ballads, because you do that better and I really need that from you”. It was a sweet letter but I decided then, you are never going to please everyone”. As Norah prepared to release a box set 20th anniversary edition of her quietly colossal debut Come Away With Me, I invited her to talk with me on The Art of Longevity with the aim of exploring just how far she had come in the intervening 20 years, musically speaking. After all, when an artist achieves the sort of success Jones did with a debut record, there is no point trying to repeat it. Instead, with each new album since, she has moved forward, while collaborating with some of the world's finest instrumentalists and producers. Genre blending was on the agenda from the off, yet Norah has continued to play with more different styles in such a way as to be a true alchemist. Do such talents pose a dilemma, I wondered? Was The Fall and then Little Broken Hearts a deliberate rebellion against the mould? Yes and no seems to be the answer. Jones was always a creator without boundaries, it was simply her massive early following (including the author of that fan letter) that placed certain expectations on her music. Our own fan letter to Norah would contain a somewhat different narrative. Never go back, keep moving forward and go even closer to the edge. Let's see where she travels next. Певица, пианистка и композитор Norah Jones выпустила дебютный альбом Come Away With Me в 2002 году и стала сразу же популярна во всем мире. On this episode of ActorSpeak, Austin Basis continues to speak with actor Ellen Gerstein (Shameless, Southland, James Dean, Seinfeld, Friends). In Part 2, we discuss her trust with Charlie Robinson, wielding a shotgun, auditioning for Barbra Streisand, her degree in psychology, working with Martin Scorsese in Raging Bull, her sense of humanity, humor & heart, connecting with people, and being the best you can in that moment. Ellen Gerstein is an award-winning Los Angeles filmmaker, actress, writer and director. She's a member of: Women In Film, The Alliance of Women Directors, Film Independent, and a lifetime member of The Actors Studio. As an actor, Ellen has worked with talented directors including Martin Scorsese, Mark Rydell, Mimi Leder, Rob Marshall, and Danny DeVito. Her TV credits include Law and Order True Crimes: The Menendez Murders, Southland and her recurring role on Shameless as Aunt Rande. Ellen starred in the award-winning feature film The Golden Age and in the short film Passage. Her acting work ranges from the comical to the poignant, working on shows like Better Things, The Morning Show and in the TNT movie James Dean. She played Aunt Lisa in Friends and Jerry's aunt in Seinfeld, so you've probably seen her talents grace your screen at one point or another. Ellen has also performed in multiple plays in Los Angeles and wrote & performed her one-woman show, My Psychotherapy Comeback Tour. Under the banner of Lulu Productions, Ellen has produced award-winning films, web series, music videos, documentaries, and theatre. She is currently developing several new projects, including Just South of Normal, a half-hour dramedy series in the vein of The Odd Couple about two high functioning men with developmental disabilities. I was lucky enough to participate in an early reading of this project, which was adapted from her award-winning short film Waiting For Ronald, with a blended cast of disabled and non-disabled actors. Come Away With Me, another film Ellen adapted, directed & acted in, has won over 15 awards and been in over 30 film festivals around the world- and was made with an all-female crew. What impresses me most about Ellen, besides her acting chops, is her persistent creative pursuits coupled with her warm welcoming spirit & sense of humor. Her passion for storytelling pushes her to constantly be creating new projects for her & her colleagues, and in turn, tell new stories. For dessert, Shane describes blacking out after a loft party and his pre-wedding nerves.
Few musicians get to experience the kind of career ride Adam Levy has had. It all started simply enough; Levy was a young, talented jazz guitarist who grew up in Los Angeles and had lived on both coasts - playing with numerous artists and earning some accolades for his smoky blues licks on Tracy Chapman's hit, “Give Me One Reason.” After a few more moves Levy found himself in San Francisco writing for Guitar Player magazine. Not a bad regular gig in a field where regular gigs come dear. A strange confluence of events then set him on a path that would sound like a yarn had it not come to pass. It was sparked by an e-mail from a little-known performer he'd played with in New York, along with a rare and uncannily good deal on an apartment in Manhattan and a cross-country tag along ride. That e-mail was from Norah Jones, with whom Levy had been playing gigs before he left for the West coast. She was headed into the studio to record her debut album for the Blue Note label and she asked him to come to New York and play some guitar. When it was released, Come Away With Me captured the zeitgeist of America in the aftermath of the September 11th terror attacks, sold millions of copies and won Jones eight Grammys in 2003 - and it also launched Jones, Levy and the other musicians in her band into the rarified air unique to multi-platinum artists. Levy played with Jones' Handsome Band for six years and two more albums before setting off on his own. Levy has kept busy since, relocating back to his native California, releasing several albums and chairing the guitar department at Los Angeles College of Music. Levy's deft, tasteful, slowhand guitar style has also been heard on recordings by Ani DiFranco, Amos Lee and numerous others, and his newest project is a quartet of top-notch musicians including Rich Hinman, Jay Bellarose and Jennifer Condos that can be found playing entertaining and unpretentious gigs around Los Angeles.

Jesse Harris is a singer, songwriter, guitar player and producer who has been walking the line between jazz and pop since he got started in the mid 90’s. While he was on a road trip with a friend, he stopped in Denton, Texas to visit some other musician friends of his, and happened to meet Norah Jones, who was still a student. The two became friends and ended up starting a band together after Norah graduated and moved to New York. That single chance encounter in Texas would prove to be an incredibly important one for both Jones and Harris. Jesse contributed five songs to Norah’s debut album “Come Away With Me” and won a Grammy for his song “Don’t Know Why”. Subsequently, he has released a dozen albums as a solo artist, and produced nearly the same again for other artists. Here he talks about his early musical development, his experience pre and post success, and the state of the business as he sees it today.
Rockers Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs have just released their third album together. "Under The Covers Vol.3" is their third album of covers that the duo put together from the songbooks of other artists that they both feel passionate about. Susanna returned to The Time Machine Radio Show last week to share the latest batch of songs. The gifted artist discussed the inspiration behind some of the songs off of the new album. She also discussed with The Time Machine's radio show host, Michael McCartney, the previous two albums from the duo known affectionately as Sid 'n' Susie (Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs), as well as her 2012 album "Someday", which became the most played album on the air for The Time Machine out of all of the records released in 2012. If you're not familiar with the album series that Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs have been recording and releasing, what you essentially need to know is that the first album covered sixties material (with the exception of the early seventies classic Bee Gees song "Run To Me"). The second album "Under The Covers Vol. 2" dove into the seventies and this latest album naturally dips into the eighties. Dips may not be the correct choice of wording. This new album plunges into the eighties and both Matthew and Susanna's song choices are so inspired that this collection of songs are a must have for your music collection. Susanna is a core artist of The Time Machine's radio format going back to the eighties with her fellow band mates Vicki Peterson, Debbi Peterson and Michael Steele of The Bangles. The band, along with The Traveling Wilburys, were the most played act on The Time Machine and helped define a sound for the radio broadcast that embraced a sixties musical sensibility with the modern music scene of the time. All four albums from The Bangles in the eighties solidified their status as radio core artists on The Time Machine and their return in 2003 with "Doll Revolution" was welcomed with open arms. The domination of that album's airplay was so strong that it became the most played album of the decade followed by Rachael Yamagata's debut album "Happenstance", "Not Ready To Make Nice" by The Dixie Chicks, Bruce Springsteen's "The Rising", Alice Peacock's self titled sophomore album, "Come Away With Me" by Norah Jones, John Mayer's "Room For Squares", "Mondo Magneto" by Brian Ray, "Lurch" from Mike Viola, "Brainwashed" by George Harrison, Nushu's "Nevermind Lullabye" and Rilo Kiley's "More Adventurous". Susanna found this old flyer to share for a June 13th, 1981 performance of The Colours, before the band became The Bangles, in the basement of the Echo Park Methodist Church Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast include The Bangles, Rachael Yamagata and Ronnie Spector. The Soulful Gentleman Love Junkie is Heston's fourth and hottest album to date, he believes, is his best yet. This well written and produced album has something for everyone. Production by Dj Kemit, with dance and steppers grooves like, To the Sky and Resign to You. Production by talented and highly sought after producer, Darren Daz I-Que Benjamin, with love ballads, such as the title track, Love Junkie, and second single, Dreaming which Heston's Fans have come to know and love. Influences of roots reggae are peppered throughout the Album - most evident in cuts like, Come Away With Me and Our Father - produced collectively by The Swatt Band and gifted producer and Bassist, Ryan Wilson - pulling songs out of Heston, that have bubbled inside this talented singer songwriter from his early days growing up in Dominica, and being influenced by the best that reggae had to offer.
