In which the Mister and I check out YOU ARE NOT MY MOTHER (2021) which you can stream on Hulu. From writer/director Kate Dolan, the film follows Char (Hazel Doupe), a young woman who's living with her Grandmother (Ingrid Craigie) and Mother (Carolyn Bracken). Her mother suffers from depression and after a tense scene in the car, Char storms away but then later discovers the empty car. The police are called in and a missing persons report is put in but a few days later her mother comes back but something is off. Very moody, tense and atmospheric, this film was an absolute treat and we recommend it. The film clocks in at 1 h 3 m and is not rated on IMDB but we think the drama and horror definitely make this a PG-13. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. The Final Chapter of the 19th Annual A-Z of Horror Festival has finally arrived. Was it worth the wait? Well, let's call it a mix of good and bad. We have disappearing mothers, Kevin Bacon, a town filled with crazy southerners, werewolves, talking pets, a lost movie that should have stayed that way, and preferring the zombie apocalypse to going into work. Let's have ourselves a little chat about:Relic (2020)Stir of Echoes (1999)Two Thousand Maniacs! (1964)The Undying Monster (1942)The Voices (2014)Werewolf By Night (2022)Xenia (1990)You Are Not My Mother (2021)Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (2023)
And we're back! Apologies for the interruption in regular podcast programming. But we return with the second half of our discussion of modern Irish horror and a look at Kate Dolan's 2021's film You Are Not My Mother, which twists expectations of metaphorical folklore in fascinating ways.
Top o' the mornin' to ya! We hope you've got your green on because it's our annual St. Patrick's Day episode, highlighting horror films from the Emerald Isle! This episode is filled with bad accents and fueled by Irish whiskey. Before we get to the pot o' gold, though, we've gotta travel down the rainbow known as Horror Business. Up first is Real World Horror, all about a "terrifying" ghost train barrelling through a town in London the UK. Up next we discuss Jeremy London returning to films and making his horror debut with the film Bone Face, as well as Guillermo Del Toro making his own version of a classic monster, the return of Slasher, and a remake of a controversial film from the 70s. We close out the segment with a story about a card game based on John Carpenter's classic film They Live. We then head to the motherland for our film reviews. Up first is the 2023 film Unwelcome, featuring trolls or goblins or leprechauns or little green ghouls. Whatever they are, they're nasty lil' buggers. We then discuss the 2021 film You Are Not My Mother, about a young girl and a creature who may or may not be her mother (hint: the name of the film). So grab a pint or a shot or both and get ready to party with the Grave Plot Podcast!
On this episode Ygraine chats with guest Dr. Vincent Gaine about Paganism in horror films and they chat about Pyewacket (2017) and You Are Not My Mother (2022) Theme Tune: Afraid of Me by Cadaver Club

In this Film Ireland podcast, Gemma Creagh talks to Kate Dolan, the writer and director of You Are Not My Mother. Rooted in eerie Irish folklore, the creepy and unsettling chiller is Kate's debut feature. Char's mother, Angela, has inexplicably disappeared. All that remains is her abandoned car. When she returns home without explanation the following evening, it becomes clear to Char and her grandmother, Rita, that something is amiss. She might look and sound the same but Angela's behaviour has become increasingly frightening, as if she has been replaced by a malevolent force. As Halloween night looms, a night steeped in ancient myth and legend, Char realizes that she is the only one who can save her, even if it means potentially losing her forever. Following its cinematic release this year 'You Are Not My Mother' is currently available to watch on Netflix.

Today, we welcome writer/director Kate Dolan to the show to tell us all about her highly successful and inspiring filmmaking journey that lead her to make her debut feature, You Are Not My Mother (2022). Kate chats with our host, Giles Alderson, about how she started out as an art director and learned from others on set. She talks about what she learned from directing children, how making short films and screening them at festivals – including Berlinale – got her an agent, and whether she thinks that short films still work as calling cards when you haven't made a feature film yet. She also discusses how her debut feature You Are Not My Mother came about, her writing process, why the early inclusion of her 1st AD and her editor made her script better, and why it's so important to build a relationship with your actors and your crew. Kate is an absolute inspiration. You don't want to miss this. So, sit back, relax and enjoy this week's episode with Kate Dolan. YOU ARE NOT MY MOTHER is out now! In this episode Mike, Rich and Steve take a look at two new releases, starting with FATHER OF FLIES. This finds a young boy trying to navigate the new family dynamic now that his step-mother has moved into his home, while trying to make sense of the supernatural goings-on which started shortly after she arrived! Our second review is YOU ARE NOT MY MOTHER. Set on a council estate in Northern Ireland, a young girl tries to understand the wild shifts in mood that her mother is suffering from. Our Short Shot is TROLLIED, very entertaining short featuring one of our favourite tropes, the "inanimate object made evil". Click the link to watch the whole 4 min short. Finally, our DTV Throwback finds Wesley Snipes as THE CONTRACTOR, an ex-CIA agent sent to London to complete an unfinished mission. Follow the Short Shots TWITTER page, where we will be linking to a short film every day! Don't forget to also check out our main show, the DTV DIGEST on TWITTER and FACEBOOK!

It ended up being entirely about the philosophy of horror, the grotesque, virtue and vices and the realm of hades . We looked at several recent horror films I thought were instructive and illustrative for various reasons and in various ways. I tied this analysis into the notions of a modern, demythologized and disenchanted world, as well the spiritual realities we all face. Movies analyzed include: The Cellar, Hole in the Ground, You Are Not My Mother, My Friends Hate Me, Last Night in Soho, and more!

Ket tells Kim about the little Irish Folktale, from Kate Dolan, You Are Not My Mother. As fellow Irish Lasses (ask 23andMe!), this one was a fave. Ket tells Kim exactly how long it will take for her to live down her previous barfing habits. And, we can't stress this enough, grab ALL the blankets you can. Most importantly, we'll learn if Kim will live or die in You Are Not My Mother.Dir. When you peer into the mirror, do you like what you see? What about when you just get out of the shower? That probably depends a great deal on your age… Here in Episode 007 of Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies, we talk about the increasing appearance of Naked Old People in Horror movies! Sure, we got that dilapidated “dish” in Room 237 in “The Shining” (1980). But the appearance of saggy and baggy bods has surely ticked up in frequency over the past decade with films like, “REC 2” (2009), “The Taking of Deborah Logan” (2014), “The Visit” (2015), “The Witch” (2015), “Hereditary” (2018), “Midsommar” (2019), “It: Chapter Two” (2019), “The Dark and the Wicked” (2020),”Amulet” (2020), and of course, that brings us to our big Feature Review of Ti West's “X” (2022)! In addition to the new Ti West flick, in Episode 007 your favorite Horror hosts also bring you reviews of The Exorcism of God (2022), Umma (2022), Off Season (2022), You Are Not My Mother (2022), and Bhoothakaalam (2022). And as part of our usual, genre-defining PSAs, we even briefly discuss a couple a couple of non-Horror movies, namely, Deep Water (2022), Beneath the Surface (2022). Also in Episode 007, Jay of the Dead reveals the unforgettable true story of how Dr. Shock earned the nickname, “Back-Door Becker.” We also read an email from Candela, our Norwegian high-school student friend, who responds to our hosts' answers (from Episode 006) to her question about American Horror movies influenced by the Cold War. Some of the boys were “deep in their cups,” as they say, while recording this episode, so our coherence may waiver somewhat from segment to segment. And of course, you will get seven, Horror-themed Specialty Segments from each host, including Jay of the Dead's It Could Happen to You Horror, Dr. Shock's Macabre Film History, Gillman Joel's Horror Lagoon, Mister Watson's Horror Hierarchy, The Dead Zone with Dr. Walking Dead, GregaMortis's Monsters on the Mantle, and Horror in Black and White by Mackula! Join us! (P.S. Sorry this episode was so damn late in releasing.) YOU ARE NOT MY MOTHER picks up it's harrowing tale the week before Halloween and Char's mother, Angela (Carolyn Branken), has inexplicably disappeared. All that remains is her abandoned car. When she returns home without explanation the following evening, it becomes clear to Char (Hazel Doupe) and her grandmother, Rita (Ingrid Craigie), that something is amiss. She might look and sound the same but Angela's behavior has become increasingly frightening, as if she has been replaced by a malevolent force. When Halloween arrives, a night steeped in ancient myth and legend, Char realizes that she is the only one who can save her, even if it means potentially losing her forever. Director and screenwriter Kate Dolan (Catcalls) joins us for a conversation on updating the folkloric tale of the changeling and the connection to a more modern and scientific context of mental health, as well as the razor sharp examination of the mother / daughter relationship, while scaring the pants of viewers. Joining Paul Webster this time around... Ross Killeen and Narayan Van Maele. Ross talks with us for a second time on the podcast, along with his exceptional DOP Narayan, chatting about what is sure to be one of the year's most popular cinema going experiences "Love Yourself Today." The film centres around the music of Irish singer/songwriter Damien Dempsey but also turns the lens on his fans. Love Yourself Today is an emotive celebration of modern spirituality and the power of music to heal. Ross Killeen is a Director and runs two very successful production companies; Event Junkies and Motherland. Ross set up Motherland, a collective of Directors, Producers and Editors, producing commercials, films and documentary to find depth, poetry and inspiration in unexpected places. The meticulous preparation he puts into every project can be felt in the comfort of his subjects, who tell their stories with pride. This is evident in abundance in his latest work. Ross's own work has won a number of awards, from Kinsale Sharks to ICADs and a Vimeo Staff Pick. 99 Problems Ross short film, is received its premiere at The Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival. Screen Ireland's POV Scheme was established to support women filmmakers, and in 2020 four live-action fiction titles were commissioned with a budget limit of €400,000. In this podcast, which was recorded last April, POV Writer/Directors Kate Dolan and Antonia Campbell-Hughes talk to us about working on their two films You Are Not My Mother and It Is In Us All respectively. This event has been made possible with the support of the BAI. About Kate Dolan Kate graduated from the National Film School at IADT in 2012. There, she majored in Directing. After working at ad agency TBWA for a year and a half after graduation Kate then took the leap to work on her writing & directing full time. She started working on commercials and writing in her spare time. In 2014, she attended Berlinale Talents to develop a short entitled Little Doll at the Short Film Script Station. The short then had its premiere at Berlinale 2016. For her work with Little Doll, she was included in the British Council's fiveFilms4freedom 2016 Global List – 33 inspiring people from around the world promoting freedom, equality and LGBT rights every day. In 2017, she made her Screen Ireland funded short, Catcalls, an irreverent horror about a sexual predator who gets what's coming to him. The film won Best Short Film at the YDA Ireland in 2018. Kate was included in the Irish Times list “Top 50 to Watch in 2019.” Her POV film You Are Not My Mother is scheduled to screen at the 46th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Antonia Campbell-Hughes Antonia is a highly acclaimed actress with a wealth of awards and nominations under her belt. After a breakout leading role in Rebecca Daly's The Other Side of Sleep at Directors Fortnight/Cannes, she went on to receive the 2012 Screen International ‘Star of Tomorrow' title, followed by the prestigious Berlinale Shooting Stars award. She has received international acclaim for her brave film work, namely 3096Days, shot by Michael Ballhaus who received the Golden Bear at Berlinale 2016. She had a BAFTA-winning performance as Kelly in Kelly+Victor. Antonia wrapped leading in Colum Eastwood's thriller Black Medicine shot in Belfast. Antonia is among the main cast with Claes Bang and Brian Cox in TV Pilot for 8-part series, Little Room. 2018 saw Antonia complete Cordelia, playing the title role. QUEST FOR LOVE, Antonia's debut short as writer/director starring Kerry Condon (Galway Film Fleadh '18), received glowing praise. 2019 saw Antonia second short ACRE FALL BETWEEN feature as part of THE UNCERTAIN KINGDOM project (BFI/NI screen). Antonia's Screen Ireland POV/Catalyst feature It Is In Us All was shot on location in Ireland 2020, led by Cosmo Jarvis. #WomenInFilm #WFTIreland #WIFTI #IrishFilm https://wft.ie/
