On deck: (6:38) December has arrived. Which means we're getting close to the homestretch of the NFL regular season. The NFC has become a barnburner due to the developments of yesterday. Not just at the top of the conference as the Lions, Eagles and Vikings are fighting for a #1 seed (who comes out on top?), but the Buccaneers have drawn even with the Falcons for first place in the South. What about the Seahawks? They currently own sole possession of first place in the West as they've put themselves in good position to win the division. How will this all play out? I can't forget the AFC as the Chiefs continue to squeak by winning these games like a Houdini act. Is this sustainable? The Bills aren't letting up anytime soon. Even the Steelers keep pace with a huge win in Cincinnati. I'll get into Matt Eberflus being shown the door in Chicago, as well as, all that's transpired throughout the Thanksgiving weekend in the league. (36:12) Just when you thought college football couldn't get more interesting, you had two major upsets and a comeback for the ages by Georgia to save themselves from postseason extinction. Ohio State loses an opportunity to play in the Big 10 Championship game after Michigan beats them for a fourth straight year. Then the Miami Hurricanes inexplicably blow a 21-0 lead at Syracuse to find themselves on the losing end, and in all likelihood, will be out of the college football playoff altogether. To top it off, Georgia was down 17-0 at the half and 14 points halfway through the fourth quarter before coming from behind and winning in eight overtimes vs. Georgia Tech. Is this the win that could propel them to a deep playoff run? (50:06) The Association had a couple of key players come back from injury. Mavericks Luka Doncic doesn't skip a beat with a 36 point/13 assist performance from a wrist injury. While Celtics Kristaps Porzingis makes a triumphant return last week against the Clippers. You've also had two situations regarding players calling out their teammates with pathetic efforts in recent games, such as Anthony Edwards and Dejounte Murray which I have to expound on. I'll look at the teams that have made some hay (ex. Rockets, Bucks) as of late and anything else that's going on in the NBA. I'll add on some college basketball as the two time champion UConn Huskies come off of losing three straight early this season. On a sad note, I'll discuss the passing of former legendary St. John's coach, Lou Carnesecca who died at the age of 99 on Saturday. (1:04:03) What has gotten into the Washington Capitals? They're missing their franchise player (Alexander Ovechkin) who's out for at least three weeks with a fractured leg, have risen to the top of the Eastern Conference (despite an embarrassing moment by their goalie last week). I'll take a look at what else is happening in the NHL, including the Winnipeg Jets who have cooled off considerably after a record breaking start to the season. (1:11:27) MLB's hot stove will heat up this coming Sunday as the Winter Meetings will begin. Some activity has taken place as the Dodgers have signed pitcher Blake Snell and re-signed Tommy Edman. Is Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki not too far behind? Is this good for baseball as the rich get richer? The Mets try to get into the action by signing Frankie Montas to a two year deal in their own right. Am I a fan of this deal? Plus, the Rays will play a ton of their home games (47 of them) during the first part of the year and have 69 of final 103 on the road. Why is this the case? And a farewell to former Giants SS Brandon Crawford who retires after 14 years in the big leagues. Decoding the Universe - Part 33 "Lucky No. 7" With Rabbi Ari Sollish (Recorded live at the Intown Jewish Academy on August 18, 2019) Seven is a highly significant number in Judaism. It is a number that is part of the natural fabric of the universe. The are seven colors of the rainbow. There are seven musical notes. There are seven foods with which Israel is blessed. There are seven dimensions of heaven. There are seven days of creation, and days of the week. And there are seven Divine emotive attributes, known as sefirot. The Kabbalists decode the numbers and reveal the dazzling connections between the seven mystical sefirot and the appearances of seven throughout our natural world. In this session of Kabbalah & Coffee we explain some of the most essential features of our world in light of mystical math.

She tells us how she quit her job with only a month's salary in the kitty, to a journey that has seen her as management of international acts at the Delicious Festival, SAMA Red Carpet show for live TV, Delicious Festival and the Mebala Biodiversity Conference. I started by asking her whether she was daunted by the prospects of managing the address of Barack Obama to tens of thousands eager South Africans....

Dear friend Ted Wulfers was here in February to play a show at Schuba's in support of his brilliant new CD and vinyl album "Lucky No. 7". Ted came in to the CAU studio with with fellow Californian and stellar drummer, Tripp Beam. It was acold and windy Chicago day, but it was plenty hot in the studio with these two.

If you look up the phrase 'Renaissance man' while flipping through a dictionary, it will describe such a person as someone "who has acquired profound knowledge or proficiency in more than one field." Being a professional musician in the new music paradigm fairly requires a level of acumen in diverse disciplines. Even artists with management need to be versed in social media, recording technology and the Internet, in addition to being accomplished musicians with a tireless and diligent work ethic. And being a successful musician also takes luck, and luck favors the prepared. Ted Wulfers is just that sort of artist. He has recorded five albums in eight years, including Lucky No. 7, which was released in January of 2013. He tours nationally as well as holding court at a weekly residency in Los Angeles, while splitting his time between L.A. and his hometown of Chicago. Wulfers owns and manages his own vintage recording studio, makes appearances on other artists' albums, scores music for video games, and still found time to catch a fish sizable enough to be featured in an exhibit in Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History. His live shows are sometimes a Springsteen-esque three to four hours in length, and if you want to learn how to earn a living in music, listen up, but stay out of Ted Wulfers' way.

Winecast, a podcast by Tim Elliott

The theme this month is from Beau at basicjuice who picked off-dry wines. I picked three from the wine store and one from the cellar to fill the bill. What I looked for was a bit of sweetness, but not enough to be confused with a candy bar. The first selection is from Josef Friederich, a Deidesheimer Hofstueck Spätlese 2003 ($8.50) - From the Pfalz region of Germany, this wine is made from the Kerner varietal. Clear leaning toward straw in color, lean citrus nose, interesting herb, green apple and honey flavors with a dose of acidity and slightly mineral finish. Nicely off-dry and quite similar to Riesling in flavor. A good choice for a warm day on the patio that would benefit from some food. Score: 8/10 My second selection is from the Sokol Blosser Winery, their Evolution, “Lucky No. 9” NV ($14) - A great label that plainly states it’s “off-dry” flavors; I have wanted to find an excuse to pick up a bottle. Light straw color, peach and pear nose, pineapple and peaches with noticeable acidity make this a good choice with food. Seems dryer than the Deidesheimer Hofstueck Spätlese, but qualifies as off-dry I guess due to it’s high acidity stealth flavor thing. Score: 8.5/10 Further investigation found this wine to be made from 9 grapes: Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muller-Thurgau, Muscat, Gewurztraminer, Semillon, Pinot Blanc, Sylvanner and Chardonnay. Damn, I would have guessed a bit of Viognier in this blend Check out their website at: http://www.evolutionwine.com/ The next selection is from Beni di Batasiolo, the Moscato d’Asti 2004 DOCG ($9) - The shelf stuffer said, “perfect for the patio”, so I thought it would be great for this off-dry event. I should have read the back label, which refers to it as, “Excellent with all deserts.” Oh well, it was open, so I had to taste anyway. In fact, I had a heck of a time extracting the cork from this baby and found out why once I poured my first glass. Nice lemony straw color with creamy bubbles, yes, bubbles. I have had many wines with spritz in my day, but this one rivals some low carbonated sparkling wine. The nose is classic muscat: melon and peaches. Very spritzy melon and peach flavors with enough sweetness to rot your teeth without going over the top (I’m not going to drop “cloying” here DISQUALIFIED as an off-dry wine, but quite nice in it’s own right. Score: 8.5/10. Note: don’t store these in a warm room or in your car for fear of explosion; I’m serious. My alternative selection (to make three for Winecast norms) is from the Snoqualmie Winery, their Columbia Valley, Chenin Blanc 2002 ($5) - Light straw yellow with a bit of green color, lean nose of apple and pear, green apple, peach and watermelon popsicle flavors which finishes off-dry. Pretty good, but one-dimensional. Score: 7.5/10 Best of tasting: Sokol Blosser Winery, Evolution, “Lucky No. 9” NV ($14) Best value: Josef Friederich, Deidesheimer Hofstueck Spätlese 2003 ($8.50) Thanks to Beau at basicjuice for the theme and Lenn Thompson for the original inspiration (best wishes to Nena and you on Friday!).
