U.S. Rep. Seth Magaziner faces a very different election landscape than when he won his congressional seat in 2022. Although Republicans had high hopes, Magaziner beat GOP candidate Alan Fung two years ago by just under four percentage points. This time around, Magaziner faces token opposition, but it's unclear if Democrats will be able to regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Senate may be up for grabs, and polls show a close presidential race between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump. Magaziner describes Trump and the election deniers who support him as a threat to democracy. So how should Democrats respond if Trump wins in November and their fears come to fruition? What does Harris need to do to overcome voters' concerns about inflation and other issues? And how does Magaziner see the outlook for strengthening democracy in the US and abroad? This week on Political Roundtable, The Public's Radio political reporter Ian Donnis goes in-depth with the congressman from Rhode Island's 2nd District.

Seth Magaziner and I met when he ran for, and served as, Rhode Island State Treasurer for eight years. I asked that we make this conversation non-partisan, to which he agreed, and as always was gracious with his time and accessibility. We talk about his view of the three biggest issues he sees facing America: climate change, income and opportunity inequality, and the rise of non-democratic movements inside and outside of the country. He talks about the House of Representatives as the purest elected part of government, since Senators can be appointed by governors when the office falls vacant, and the President is actually placed in office by the Electoral College. (Originally and Constitutionally, Senators were appointed by state legislatures and there was no popular vote until the 17th Amendment in 1913.) The discussion covered Ukraine, a war that originally was to see Russia in Kiev in two weeks, and is now in its 500th+ day with Russia on the defensive. I asked what we learned about our own military preparedness. Seth is optimistic that polarization will be lessened, and wants to ensure that the debt ceiling is never again used as a bargaining chip by either party. He points out that there are many bipartisan discussions, agreements, and bills passed that don't always make the media even now. He told me that he was surprised by “how nice people are in the House”! I surprised him by recommending Washington's Café Milano, the restaurant where the food is supposed to be mediocre but the neutrality is top priority and power brokers from both parties enjoy meals together. I did tell him reservations are tough and he may have to call on Ms. Pelosi to get a table!

He is running for Congress to fight for the middle class and those working hard to join it. Seth will work to help Rhode Islanders keep up with the cost of living by protecting Social Security and Medicare, lowering the price of prescription drugs, and returning big oil company profits back to consumers. Seth will stand up for a woman's right to make her own health care decisions and pass common-sense gun safety legislation.Seth has served as Rhode Island's General Treasurer since 2015 where he has delivered results for the second congressional district by investing in education, job creation, and clean energy infrastructure. As Chair of the state's school building task force, Seth led a statewide school construction initiative that created over 28,000 jobs and repaired or replaced over 200 schools like Garden City Elementary School in Cranston and the soon-to-be-completed combined elementary school in Johnston. Seth also launched innovative clean energy financing programs that have helped cities and towns build out solar, wind and climate resiliency projects, saving taxpayers money and reducing fossil fuel emissions. With help from the programs Seth created, the town of West Warwick hasn't paid an electricity bill on any municipal building in five years. Over the last eight years, Seth has used his office to fight for things that matter to Rhode Islanders. He helped pass the Reproductive Privacy Act in 2019 that codified the protections of Roe v. Wade into state law, as well as common-sense gun measures like banning guns on school grounds and a red flag law to take guns out of the hands of domestic abusers. As a new parent, Seth will fight to build a country where everyone has a chance to achieve the American Dream like his family did. Seth's grandfathers were both sons of immigrants who grew up poor. Despite not having much, when they returned from World War II they were able to find good, middle-class jobs – Grandpa Bob as a steelworker in Worcester and his Grandpa Louis as a bookkeeper at a fruit canning company in New York. With those jobs, they bought homes, started families, and put their kids through college. Their kids, Seth's parents, both graduated from college and started a business together in Rhode Island, where Seth was raised and has served for the past eight years as General Treasurer. This was the American Dream that was so common a generation ago – the promise that with hard work and perseverance, each generation can leave a better life for their kids than they had for themselves. That American Dream of economic mobility has broken down for many families and was never afforded to others. Seth believes we can only restore the American Dream if we send representatives to Washington who will fight for working people and stand up to the extreme elements in Washington that put their own ambition ahead of doing what is right. Seth has spent his career fighting for working Rhode Islanders, and is ready to bring that fight to Washington.

The delta variant of the virus has led to a nationwide spike in new confirmed cases. Magaziner said, “In order to protect the health and the lives of Rhode Islanders, we must follow the science.” The agency has about 100 employees. Magaziner has also directed his staff to explore adopting requirements in line with President Joe Biden's policy for federal employees, under which staff must either provide proof of vaccination or comply with regular testing. Rhode Island's coronavirus community transmission rate continues to climb and is now at more than 126 cases per 100,000 people in the past seven days, which is considered “high,” the state Department of Health reported Thursday. The agency also reported more than 200 new confirmed coronavirus cases, but no additional deaths. Wednesday's positivity rate was 2.9% from 7,156 tests. There were 39 people in the state's hospitals with Covid, according to the latest data. Nearly 662,000 people have been fully vaccinated in the state. The department also reported that most of Rhode Island's state-run COVID-19 testing sites will be closed Monday in observance of Victory Day, the holiday that marks the end of World War II and is celebrated only in Rhode Island. Testing sites will resume normal operations on Tuesday. For more about the coronavirus pandemic and the latest on all things in and around Westerly, head over to westerlysun.com. September 12th marked the anniversary of the day that Biko, arguably the most exciting leader of his time, was murdered by apartheid police in 1977. Biko's ideas have continued to resonate long past his death, and have especially shaped the convictions of the new generation of activists emerging from the #feesmustfall and #blacklivesmatter movements. This week we kick off our inaugural season of our weekly livestream talk show, AIAC Talk, with a discussion on the life and legacy of Steve Biko. Dan Magaziner (Yale University) and an editorial board member of Africa Is a Country joins us for the first half of the show. Magaziner will talk about his book, "The Law and the Prophets: Black Consciousness in South Africa, 1968-1977." Two young South African activists and thinkers will join us in the second half of the show to talk about what Biko means today: pan-Africanist historian Phethani Madzivhandila and University of Cape Town student activist Alex Hotz. In the final week of Black History month, we chat with Dr. Daniel Magaziner, Associate Professor of History at Yale University. He is also … More Ep8. A conversation with Dr. Daniel Magaziner on an Apartheid-era art school
Daniel Magaziner’s latest book, The Art of Life in South Africa (Ohio University Press, 2016, and UKZN Press, 2017), is a welcome addition to the intellectual history of South Africa. Rich in color images and documentary history, The Art of Life tells the story of African art in white apartheid South Africa, juxtaposing the beauty of an ordinary life well lived, against the random cruelty of the apartheid state. The book follows the story of the Ndaleni Art School in modern-day KwaZulu-Natal from 1952 until its closing in 1981. The school was set up to teach the art teachers of the Bantu education system, but in doing so, it opened up the student’s lives to more complex discussions of creativity, beauty and resilience. Magaziner sets up the tale by spinning the individual lives against the opposing pressures of both the apartheid state and the black consciousness movement. On the one side, rigid oppression, and on the other, the push to fight apartheid or be deemed a collaborator. The individual stories of former Ndaleni students force the reader to see beyond the black and white of these opposing narratives. The people profiled chose to lead fulfilled lives, not because they were defying apartheid, but because their only choice was to simply live. The book is, at its heart, a human story, set against the backdrop of apartheid. Erin Freas-Smith, Ph.D can be reached at efreassmith@gmail.com. Learn more about your ad choices.
