Amanda Leese, SVP of Operations, Volunteers of America Delaware Valley, and Allison Accettola, Senior Vice President for Government Relations, discussed the Volunteers of America programming fighting human trafficking. While trafficking can involve forced labor VOA focus on sex trafficking, of women, children and men. Everyone is vulnerable, through fraud and coercion or by threats of violence to the victim and their family. They discussed their close work with local law enforcement to protect the victim, and the reentry programming they offer. They stress that education and awareness is vital for children and their families about the dangers of human trafficking, its early signs, and what to do if you suspect someone you know is being trafficked. VOADV has launched the Human Trafficking Awareness and Education program, aimed at educating school-aged youth and their parents about the dangers of human trafficking. The program was made possible by a federal appropriation sponsored by Congressman Donald Norcross. It will initially launch in Pine Hill, Voorhees, Maple Shade, Paulsboro, and Gloucester City in partnership with the towns’ local police departments. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) is developing grade-level specific educational materials for the campaign. VOADV hosts an annual Human Trafficking Summit, held in Atlantic City for the first two years and at Rowan University in 2024. A key point of the summit is to bring stakeholders, law enforcement, service providers, and legislators together to discuss best practices and how to support both victims and law enforcement prosecuting perpetrators of human trafficking. Maple Shade, New Jersey is a quaint suburb; its slogan is “Nice Town, Friendly People.” But on the evening of March 23, 2017, an Indian tech worker, Sasikala Narra, and her six-year-old son, Anish, were found brutally murdered in their apartment. Police questioned the husband and father, Hanumantha, but his alibi had checked out. Six years later, the case is still unsolved, and authorities won't discuss it. So, we're investigating for ourselves and discovering new leads, potential motives, and questionable behavior by local authorities. Will there ever be justice for Sasikala and Anish?Strangeland Season 2: Murder in Maple Shade is available right now wherever you listen to podcasts.
There were some dramatic lifestyle change following the murders, alongside a strange donation to a Maple Shade charity. We investigate that, plus the ongoing legal battle for Sasi's estate. There's more than a million dollars at stake.

Maple Shade is a modern-day Mayberry, but in the Fox Meadow apartments, it's a different story. We go to the Narra's home in Fox Meadow and start speaking with their neighbors. Turns out that “Fox Ghetto,” as many locals call it, has a long history of violence that doesn't square with the town's squeaky clean image.

A new open-letter has been released in support of Amber Heard and Tawny is thrilled. She highlights the common misconceptions still circling the media and talks about how her experience as a survivor impacts her opinions. Maria recalls a time she felt betrayed by her father which leads to a moment of honest reflection for both women. Elon Musk has been determined to be deemed a Cool Kid, but his efforts aren't going as planned. Tawny and Maria laugh at the Twitter chaos and explore why verification badges are so important. Chris Evan's fandom is melting down over him being in a relationship and it just has us more confused about people's shameless behaviors. A woman wonders if she'll be the asshole if she names her baby the same thing as her cousin: the horror! A simple, yet ridiculous situation we can all relate to. Trigger Warning:We discuss Domestic Violence multiple times in this episode surrounding Amber Heard support & our own personal stories. Come hang with us Saturday 11/19 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Maple Shade.
Great interview with David Downham, owner of The Gradwell House Studios.Yes, it was originally a house with a basement studio/DIY show space in Maple Shade NJ on W. Gradwell Ave. The studio has since occupied a chop shop in Gloucester City (2002-2004), some slumlord's leaky-roofed shit-hole on Atlantic ave in Haddon Heights (2004-2016) and our new wonderful and permanent home just around the corner in a repurposed, custom designed and built Masonic Lodge (Lodge 191 Y'all) on Station Ave in downtown Haddon Heights, NJ.The original basement location was in Steve Poponi's (co-owner) rented Maple Shade, NJ home for 4 long . . . carpet-remnant-wall-covered, does-that-band-own-a-tuner, Samson-mixer-having, pj-whelihans-chicken-caesar-salad-clogging-up-the-utility-sink-right-behind-my-mix-position-smelling years. After Steve's move to the Gloucester City chop-shop location Dave Downham entered the picture as a sparkly blue-eyed second engineer. Coming from his own soon-to-be defunct Cherry Hill NJ "Couches in the Desert" basement studio Dave and Steve became 50/50 partners. In addition to recording horrible bands (it was 2004, think high school Metalcore bands) and a couple good ones (really just Sugar Queef), the Gloucester location also continued to host live shows for touring bands (pretend there is an epic list here) and tons of local garbage. The limitations of this space and bondo dust in the air as well as the junkyard dogs and the prostitute-sidewalk-highway and the both-my-landlords-went-to-jail-1-month-after-we-signed-our-lease got Steve and Dave looking to move The Gradwell House again thus bringing them to Haddon Heights, NJ. The original Haddon Heights location was built with recording bands "live" in mind, and after 12 leaky-roofed years in this rented location, the limitations of this space once again got them looking to relocate, this time to buy! In 2016 The Gradwell House opened its permanent home, a custom built, wonderfully flexible, 6000 square foot music facility in downtown Haddon Heights.SUBSCRIBE TO ROCK 'N' FRIDAYS PODCAST!https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEvn_21MsmWSK7fqOPNLjJA/videos

Today's guest is https://www.linkedin.com/in/marco-perazzo-1359232/ (Marco “The Professor” Perazzo.) Marco Perazzo is a 3rd degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, owner and head instructor New Jersey Marital Arts located in Maple Shade, NJ. Marco known in the BJJ community as “The Professor” has been cornerman for MMA fighters competing in the UFC and in Bellator. Marco is also the is co-host (or likes to say the main cohost of the popular Ninja Rob Podcast) where he discusses all things MMA. Marco, a native of South Philadelphia, spent his early years between his home in South Philadelphia, and visiting Argentina (where his mother was born), and Italy (where his father was born). After graduating high school with no real direction or long-term plan, Marco attended then quickly dropped out of Temple University. Marco started working a health insurance company until one day in the early 1990's his life changed direction forever when he went over a friend's house and watched a bootlegged recording of the first UFC that showed a undersized Royce Gracie easily defeating bigger, stronger, faster opponents using the then little understood techniques of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Marco describes what it was like starting his BJJ training with Steve Maxwell at Maxercise and how he met Phil and Ricardo Migliareese, who he established a 30+ year friendship and how he still continues to learn from the brothers to this day. Marco describes the conversation early on in his BJJ journey that led him to lose 70 pounds. Marco and I also discuss his philosophy of the business world, BJJ and life is built on establishing great relationships and being able to work with people. We discuss why a teacher student relationship is built on trust and we get into what he believes are the amazing mental and physical benefits of training a combat martial art like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. We get into what it was like to lead a small business through a global pandemic and how the pandemic taught him when times get tough, it's no the time to be a boy scout. Marco describes the rush of emotion of what it is like to walk your fighter into the ring of a UFC fight and why some of his greatest learnings in BJJ and life are from noticing the little details. We also touch on “The Professor's” bout with COVID-19 that sent him to the hospital for multiple days . So… Thank you for listening. We just past the 1,200 download mark. To everyone who has texted and messaged encouraging messages and things I need to do better…I really appreciate it. If you like what you hear, please HIT the SUBSCRIBE BUTTON. Pete Gillette is a fellow member of my Aikido dojo. Our dojo is the Aikido Arts Institute (http://aikidoartsinstitute.com/) in Maple Shade, New Jersey. I approached Pete in class a month previous to asked if we could do something completely unrelated to Aikido. I said I’d buy him lunch if he’d consider listening to an economics lesson that I'd been practicing. He said yes. When we first arrived at the diner, he admitted that he expected me to market some Ponzi scheme kind of business proposition. He was pleasantly surprised when that was not the case. Pete calls himself a Democrat, but does not follow politics. (I am a full-on progressive and supporter of Bernie Sanders.) Despite all of them being active in and aware of politics, Pete knew more to start than all of them. Recorded July 28th, 2018. Quotes from Pete: - From the Matrix: "Why do my eyes hurt?" "It’s your first time using them." - "Bringing it back to Aikido, [economic ignorance] is a good lead. It keeps us off balance" Sources mentioned: - The Allegory of the Cave: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegory_of_the_Cave - Network: "Mad as hell": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwMVMbmQBug

Interview with Lisa, the owner of The New Maple Hill restaurant in Maple Shade, NJ, on her fears of the consequences of Bernie Sanders' proposal for $15/hour minimum wage. She is otherwise unfamiliar with his policy ideas. I am using this as an avenue of improving my understanding of all of Sanders' proposals, and specifically to prepare myself for future conversations I will be having with other small business owners. Cameo by waitress Maggie, who is the reason my boys consider this restaurant "Maggie's Restaurant".
Vivian McPeak chats with Roger Barbour about his determination to fight for her daughters right to be able to use her cannabis oils on school grounds. She uses cannabis oils to reduce her seizures, and he is on a mission to give her the comfort she needs throughout the school day. The New Jersey resident has many hurdles to jump given the restrictive conditions for medical marijuana use in the state - children are especially challenged to be given any form of the plant. Roger and Lora Barbour, of Maple Shade, told NJ.Com their daughter Genny Barbour was finally seizure free after a doctor prescribed her cannabis oil, which she took multiple times a day. But the school district determined she could not take the medication on school grounds because that would violate federal laws for drug-free school zones. The case was taken to the New Jersey high court but was denied, NJ.com noted.
