I was at Glen Hansard's band The Frames first gig at the Clifton Country Blues Festival in the west of Ireland in 1990. Shortly afterwards we became friends and it has been a wonder to witness the incredible adventure he has been on since, always with music and poetry and an eagerness to better understand himself and life at the heart of it. From humble beginnings living in Dublin's only high rise flats in Ballymun he went on to create amazing music loved by fans all over the world and has played alongside so many of his childhood heroes like Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Eddie Vedder, Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchell, Michael Stipe and many more. He won an Oscar for the music he and Marketa Irglova wrote for the Indie Film 'Once' that they both starred in which captured the hearts of so millions and opened him out to a wider audience. We have a rambling conversation about so many things, I hope you like it (we managed to clean up the audio really well for the most part but towards the end you can hear a friendly neighbour strimming the grass outside the window, just a heads up). You can connect with Glen @thegingerman222 on Instagram and I am @beinspiredrav We would love to connect and hear your thoughts on the episode. On The Guest: Today's guest is Lizzie Weber, the singer/songwriter who first put the idea in my mind that I also might be able to become a songwriter someday. More on that later. For now you should know she is an incredible indie folk artist known for her features in publications such as the Huffington Post, Glide Magazine and Seattle Weekly, as well as her collaborations with Grammy-award winning producer Sheldon Gomberg and Oscar-winner and singer/songwriter, known for the movie and musical Once, Marketa Irglova and for just being a stellar person. From this conversation you'll learn: How to take a chance on yourself How to take fear out of the driver's seat and take the risky path that leads to our truest selves. Why your subconscious is a fruitful ground for creativity How to focus on your long-term creative work rather than social media content alone Tips for cultivating patience The merit of being a big fish in a small pond How to recover from trauma and turn pain into purpose How to adapt to uncomfortable changes Why a long creative process is okay Lizzie's emotional story about her miscarriage and how she is sharing it through music How to get yourself seen as an indie artist or small business The importance of following instincts And More! This week, The Plotaholics continue their Summer of Song event with a discussion of the 2007 film, Once, starring Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova as two musicians who discover in each other a kindred spirit. After a meeting on the streets of Dublin, Ireland, the musicians hit it off. They begin making music together and ultimately decide to record some songs in a local studio. It was a once in a lifetime moment for the two of them, and the most important thing was what they would create together. Support the show
@mejoetowne @thewebbsisters Joe chats with the marvelously talented Webb Sisters about what they learned about collaborating with some of the world's top musicians and producers and what it feels like being on stage with thousands of people watching night after night. They talk about cultivating excellence in and around performance, the relationships that can change the trajectory of our lives and internal struggles that emerge around the very dream jobs we work so hard to bring into being. Ultimately, the Webb Sisters share that the obstacles themselves —from self doubt to performance anxiety and people pleasing can also become our best teachers. Who are Charley & Hattie? “The sublime Webb Sisters” was how Leonard Cohen introduced Charley and Hattie on his international comeback tour. Charley and Hattie joined Leonard for this 6 year global adventure on the road, becoming well known for their close harmony sibling vocals and unique instrumentation, of harp, mandolin and guitar. Starting at the beginning with their first major label release 'Daylight Crossing', they burst onto the UK music scene via Mercury Records receiving 'Single and Album of the Week' on itunes and BBC Radio 2. An album of strong melodies, led by Hattie's harp, Charley's rhythmic guitar and drenched in their signature harmonies; Tom Petty said: “their own records are incredible, they will blow your mind”. Whilst on the road with Leonard, The Webb Sisters recorded and released their album ‘Savages' and EP's ‘The Other Side' & 'When Will You Come Home', produced by legendary producer Peter Asher. Their song 'Baroque Thoughts' went on to win The International Music Award for 'Best Adult Contemporary Song'. The sisters joined Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to sing with them on their 40th Anniversary tour in 2017, singing with Tom on his final 50 concerts. Hattie and Charley recorded with The Lumineers on their record ‘III', performing with them live at The O2 Arena in November of the same year. Then collaborating with Wesley Schultz for his recent solo album ‘Vignettes'. Their distinctive vocal sound has contributed to live performances with; and recordings by the likes of Sting, The Avett Brothers, Glen Hansard, Steve Martin & Edie Brickell, Marketa Irglova, Damien Rice and Elvis Costello. The Webb Sisters received the 2019 Maynooth University Ireland Award for Arts and Culture. Like former guest Ingrid Oscarsson, friend and mentor Renée Catrine hails from Chicago and currently lives in New York City. Having been in various bands throughout the years, Renée was eager to set off on her own to create her own music. She released her debut solo album, Arrival, in August 2016 with the help of Nick Brose (Mucca Pazza) and co-producer Mike Przygoda. Ingrid and Renée share the stage these days, just as they share the air in this interview with subtle commentary from Omar the 20 pound cat. Renée Catrine's music has been described as "hauntingly beautiful music with poetic lyrics of a keen observer". Reminiscent of captivating songwriters such as Fiona Apple, Marketa Irglova and Regina Spektor, Renée's debut album features sincere, thoughtful lyrics set to catchy pop/rock music and lush, orchestrated arrangements. Ingrid Oscarsson is featured in Episode 042. Renée is currently preparing to record her second solo album in New York City this winter. The new music draws inspiration from Arcade Fire, Radiohead and Cœur de Pirate. The album was written in Québec City, Chicago & New York. She is thrilled to be touring the Midwest and East coast this fall & winter to debut the new songs.

Durante el día, para ganar algún dinero extra, interpreta conocidos temas para los transeúntes, pero por las noches, toca sus propios temas en los que habla de cómo le dejó su novia. This week I'm 80% happy for former casting director turned assistant director, Clare McGinley. Clare started out reviewing college plays whilst studying at U.C.D in Dublin to casting actors on T.V and film. To date she has worked on shows such as the R.T.E series 'Raw' and 'Love Hate' to 'Begin Again', starring Kiera Knightly, Mark Ruffalo and Adam Levine. She is currently assistant director to John Carney who directed 'Once' which starred Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. 'Once' won an Oscar for Best Original Song for 'Falling Slowly', something I am unlikely to do.Anyone interested in working behind the scenes in TV and film should have a listen to this here podcast. Break out the Entertainment Weekly and pull up IMDb and AV Club in different browser tabs because Rob and I are about to get deep into some pop culture goodness. Rob is an incredibly nice guy and an excellent actor/improviser, and he goes into some really interesting details on how he became a fan of pop culture in general (Looney Toons played a big role!) and how it continues to feed into his creative life (the phrase "Comedy Cops" is used!). Tune in, people. Notes: The hosts of Pop My Culture are Cole Stratton and Vanessa Ragland, but I won't link it because Rob wasn't really recommending it. Doug Loves Movies! It sure did take Glen Hansard a while to capture the world's attention. Long a star in his native Ireland, thanks to a long string of albums with The Frames, Hansard couldn't catch a break in America, where he bounced from label to label without finding much success. But then Hansard and young Czech singer Marketa Irglova sang and starred together in a little 2007 indie movie called 'Once,' and everything changed: The two won an Oscar for "Falling Slowly," the movie's soundtrack sold millions, and The Frames gave way to The Swell Season, in which Hansard and his old band perform with Irglova. The two singers' romantic relationship ended as they were recording 2009's 'Strict Joy,' but they continue to work and perform together. Here, The Swell Season performs live at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, R.I.

Marketa Irglova and Glen Hansard went from struggling musicians to bona fide movie stars after appearing in the hit movie-musical Once. Tune in to hear their discussion with Jim and Greg plus a live musical performance.
Kim and TC take a look at the old fashioned screwball all-star comedies, and name a few more recent ones as well. Plus, this week's Callback with all kinds of site goodies, and the Bonehead Of The Week, which marks the first time the same person has been awarded the Bonehead twice for the same thing, but with a later statement. And it could only be ONE person...you STAR TREK fans will know what we mean... And in response to a letter from a listener, TC and Kim discuss how far is too far for a movie critic to go, and why the Boston Globe's Ty Burr went way way WAAAAAY too far when he revealed the complete surprise ending of Stephen King's The Mist in his review last week, spoiler alert or not. Finally, Awards Season is HERE!! You'll get this year's first Year-End awards list from Paste Magazine, and a review of a concert starring the Swell Season - Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova of the indie smash "Once". As always, complete show notes can be found on our website at http://subjectcinema.com and http://popcornnroses.com. Thanks for checking us out.
