Scottish farmers say they need to know details of plans for direct payments - and fast. The National Farmers Union Scotland is having its annual conference and its president, Martin Kennedy, says his members need details of the new scheme which will replace CAP - and soon, or it will have a serious impact on food producers, processors and the whole Scottish economy. He says at the moment farmers still don't know how it will work, or what the budget will be. Horticultural peat will be banned next year, but peat is still being extracted from the largest remaining wetland in England - the Somerset Levels. Peat has been taken from the area for burning and for use as compost for over 2000 years – but the Government has now stopped granting licences for peat extraction in England as it's valuable for carbon sequestration and biodiversity. Extraction on the Levels will end when the current licences expire, so the company removing small amounts of peat from the Levels near Glastonbury is re-thinking the future. The right to roam is controversial topic, the Labour party says if it wins the election it will introduce the right in England. In Scotland there is a right to roam and wild camp. Richard Baynes visits a Scottish farming family which relies on tourism. The Duncan family farm beef cattle and sheep on three farms and one of them is on the edge of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National park. The family have two glamping pods, but they say some tourists can be problematic. Presenter: Charlotte Smith Producer: Rebecca Rooney

This week on Over The Farm Gate we will be discussing the UK trade deal with Australia and Defra's consultation on lump-sum retirement payments and delinking. Last week it emerged a zero-tariff arrangement on all products, including beef and lamb was close to being signed off but, farm chiefs are worried this could put British family farms out of business. To find out more about the trade deal and its effect on the farming sector in the UK, Farmers Guardian chief reporter Abi Kay speaks to NFU Scotland president Martin Kennedy and FUW's head of policy Dr Nick Fenwick. Abi also speaks to Georgie Styles about Defra's consultation on a lump-sum retirement scheme and delinked payments in England. Farmers claiming under the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) in England will soon benefit from a lump sum exit scheme which will offer a payment capped at £100,000, to older farmers to allow them to ‘retire with dignity'. Farm groups have welcomed the long-awaited consultation on a lump sum retirement scheme and delinked payments in England. However, the Landworkers Alliance has expressed ‘grave concerns' about the proposals. "Closing Out 2020 With Todd Goldstein" “I like to think of music as an emotional science,” the composer George Gershwin once said. Keeping that in mind, Todd Goldstein has been spending a lot of time in the lab. The musician’s new album under his TG moniker is called Memory Foam and it’s a textured long player whose innovative soundscapes bring to mind the work of everyone from Brian Eno to Martin Kennedy’s All India Radio. In this year-ending interview, Goldstein talks to Alex about how moving from the east coast to the west affected his notion of sound, his love of rave culture and what it was like to move from his old bands (Harlem Shakes, ARMS) into such broad compositional territory.
SS102fm invite Aoife McGrath (St Patrick's College, Maynooth), Noirin Lynch (Margaret Aylward Centre, Dublin) and Martin Kennedy (Pastoral Development and Facilitator) to our kitchen table discussion and to share their thoughts and experience about what our faith communities can learn from our Covid-19 experience. We have an interesting and humorous sharing of thoughts looking at what we did well, identifying the challenges and gaps that arose and looking to the future what we could learn and where we might go as a faith community. Focusing on the manifestation of Gospel values in the actions of community spirit during the lockdown we discuss the multi-generational experience where faith became something for life rather than living a life for faith. We discuss the challenges of things like the digital divide in supporting individuals and families and how it posed a challenge to how we are used to "doing" church rather than "being" church. Finally we look to the future and how we need to create spaces for people to reflect on what has happened in small bite size ways where we accompany each other on the journey ahead.Note - due to stricter enforcement of the BAI broadcasting rules, we can only use 30 sec of music on uploads which are broadcast on West Limerick 102fm.
