Our focus is on the critical journey individuals must undertake to reconnect with their inner wisdom, highlighting the challenge many face when seeking external validation or guidance instead of looking within. As we explore this theme, we emphasize the importance of embracing one's own expertise in navigating personal needs and feelings. Dr. Letterman introduces the concept of the nine pillars, a framework designed to help individuals realign with their internal landscape. By identifying and nurturing these pillars—self-awareness, sleep, nutrition, activity, play, connection to family and friends, work and purpose, spirituality, and the natural world—we can cultivate a holistic sense of well-being. The discussion elaborates on how attending to these areas fosters resilience and joy, particularly when faced with life's inevitable challenges. #anxiety #selfcare #mentalhealth #wellness #mindfulness #emotionalregulation #stressmanagement #innerpeace #personalgrowth #healing #coaching #therapy #psychology #neuroscience #communication #relationships #parenting #children #education #health #lifestyle #happiness #joy #fulfillment #purpose #meaning #spirituality #nature #connection #community #support #resilience #hope #inspiration #motivation #transformation #growthmindset #selfcompassion #selfacceptance #bodypositivity #mindfulliving #holistichealth #integrativehealth #lifestylemedicine #functionalmedicine #nutrition #exercise #sleep #play #family #friends #worklifebalance #boundaries #compassion #empathy #nonviolentcommunication #mbsr #act #dbt #cbt #GinaRyan #ACP #AnxietyCoachesPodcast Learn more about your ad choices. In the world of health and wellness, many terms are tossed around, often becoming buzzwords. But what do they really mean? One such term is "whole-person health." What is it, and why is it important? In a recent episode of the Health Science Podcast, hosted by Dr. Frank Sabatino and sponsored by the National Health Association, Dr. Matthew Lederman, a board-certified internal medicine specialist and bestselling author, delves into the concept of whole-person health and its significance. The Journey to Holistic Health Dr. Lederman began his career in traditional internal medicine but quickly recognized the limitations of focusing solely on symptoms rather than the entire person. This realization led him to explore a more holistic approach to healthcare, integrating lifestyle and nutritional strategies alongside conventional treatments. Understanding Whole-Person Health Whole-person health, as explained by Dr. Lederman, is an approach that considers all aspects of a person's well-being, including physical, emotional, mental, social, and even spiritual health. Instead of treating isolated symptoms or conditions, this method looks at how different aspects of a person's life influence their overall health. By addressing the root causes of illness and promoting a balanced lifestyle, whole-person health aims to achieve optimal well-being. Why Whole-Person Health Matters The importance of whole-person health lies in its comprehensive approach. Traditional medicine often focuses on specific symptoms or diseases, sometimes neglecting the interconnectedness of various aspects of health. Whole-person health acknowledges that factors such as diet, exercise, stress levels, relationships, and emotional well-being are all interrelated. By addressing these areas together, individuals can experience more profound and lasting health improvements. Dr. Lederman's Insights Dr. Lederman emphasized the role of nutrition in whole-person health, advocating for a plant-based diet rich in whole foods. According to Dr. Lederman, the right nutrition can significantly impact physical health, mental clarity, and emotional stability. He also highlighted the importance of stress management techniques such as mindfulness and meditation, which can enhance emotional and mental well-being. www.HealthScience.org/podcast/093-Dr-Matthew-Lederman

We all are well aware of the importance of managing stress when it comes to overall health and weight loss.  Less stress reduces cortisol levels as well as decreasing the likelihood of stress-induced cravings and overeating.  And one of the most effective tools to combat stress is controlled breathing. In this episode we introduce a device that is designed to help individuals, particularly children, achieve calmness through a combination of slow breathing, visual focus, and auditory regulation using white noise. The device is intended to teach users how to achieve states of relaxation and composure, which are essential for managing stress and anxiety effectively. To dive into this device, we welcomed back Dr. Matthew Lederman to the show.  Dr. Lederman  co-founded WeHeal with his wife Dr. Alona Pulde with the intent to focus on a holistic approach to health that integrates nutrition, lifestyle, and emotional well-being. The WeBe Kalm device fits into this philosophy by providing a practical method for emotional self-regulation. It has been praised for its effectiveness in helping children and adults manage their emotions and improve their overall well-being by fostering mindfulness and calmness in stressful situations.

He created a device called webe kälm to help people move from the sympathetic nervous system to the parasympathetic nervous system. This allows us to move from a constant reactionary state to one where we are taking calculated actions towards our goals and dreams. While the sympathetic nervous system has an important place, saving us from immediate danger, we tend to spend far too much time in that state. All the dieting in the world may not help you.  In other words, there's more to wellness than a healthy diet. The word wellness is most often used to describe an aspirational state of physical health, attained by attention to diet and lifestyle. This episode expands on this and emphasizes the impact of integrating authentic connection with family, friends, colleagues, spirit, and the natural world.  To share these often overlooked pillars, we invited Dr. Alona Pulde and Dr. Matthew Lederman to the show.  They both have spent decades treating chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and obesity with their diet and lifestyle medical practices. With Whole Foods Market cofounder John Mackey, they coauthored The Whole Foods Diet and The Whole Foods Cookbook. They also authored the NY Times best seller The Forks Over Knives Plan, Forks Over Knives Family, and Keep It Simple, Keep It Whole.
