ActionSA national chairperson Michael Beaumont noted on Monday that his party will advocate for the regulation of the polling industry, which he said operates with impunity albeit "enabled by the vital democratic institution of a free and independent media". ActionSA has claimed that three media outlets published a poll on March 10 without any reference to the origin of the poll, following a previous instance in August. "In both instances it is believed that the poll in question was a Democratic Alliance (DA) poll shared with these media institutions and, in turn, deliberately published without reference to the age-old question of cui bono - who benefits? The journalist goes as far as to confirm the poll was shared confidentially and that its origins are an institution with 'an excellent track record' in polling," Beaumont said. He said in the instance of the most recent poll, the outcomes placed the DA at record levels of support, something he said appeared at odds with a party that had lost support in all demographics. Further, the polls show that the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are growing prodigiously. He said in the media publishing the poll, the DA benefited from the artificial illusion of growth from a poll, which they themselves supply, placing them at 19% in KZN (up from 13% in 2019) and 30% in Gauteng (up from 27% in 2019). Beaumont said, similarly, the poll generated the narrative of "rooi gewaar" through "alarming" growing figures of MK and EFF support, which he added is a "favoured" campaign approach of the DA to animate its core support base. Beaumont highlighted that this week the Brenthurst Foundation produced a poll which placed the DA's support at 27% (up from 20% in 2019). Similarly, he said the poll painted the picture of surging MK support at 13% - adding that was a practical impossibility for a party whose support was almost entirely limited to KwaZulu-Natal and parts of Mpumalanga. "However, like the other polls referenced, it is helpful to paint a narrative of DA growth and the useful stick to whip out the vote against the threat of a growing left alliance. The Brenthurst Foundation is the same body that paid for the DA Federal leader to travel to the Ukraine at the outbreak of the Russian invasion," he noted. He said the consequence of polls could not be overestimated in South Africa where political momentum mattered, adding that this was why many countries had elected to regulate the polling industry. He said polls in South Africa had no regulation and were open to abuse that appeared to be designed to influence electoral trends in South Africa. He noted that while the party would file a complaint with the Press Ombudsman and a complaint with the Independent Electoral Commission - in terms of misinformation - it would push for regulations that did not currently exist in South Africa.
The Electoral Commission of South Africa, IEC says it is investigating the ANC's R102 million debt settlement with Ezulweni Investments. This follows a request by ActionSA for the IEC to investigate how the debt was settled. Ezulweni, a KwaZulu-Natal based marketing company took the ANC to court after its failure to pay the money it owed for 2019 election posters. ActionSA president Herman Mashaba announced the party's national chairperson Michael Beaumont, Eastern Cape provincial chairperson Athol Trollip and party spokesperson Lerato Ngobeni are among the candidates the party will be fielding to represent it in the National Assembly. Mashaba was unveiling his party's 'Team Fix South Africa' in Johannesburg, where he noted that if given the mandate to govern, an ActionSA administration would reduce the number of national government departments to about 20, and eliminate the position of deputy minister in all departments. He said the chosen candidates represented some of the best minds and skills the country had. He announced Beaumont as the party's Team Fix South Africa's member for Infrastructure and Public Enterprises, Ngobeni as Team Fix South Africa's member for Home Affairs and Trollip as Team Fix South Africa's member for Land and Agriculture, and as the party's leader of Executive Business in Parliament. The list also includes Dr Tsholofelo Maforah, Dr Tutu Faleni, Solly Moeng, Pieter Scribante, Mpho Madisha, Dr Kgosi Letlape, Nothukhela Mahkohliso, Dereleen James, Advocate Julie Seaton, Thuli Khoza, Mohammed Rafeek Shah, Nompumelelo Edward, Sello Lediga and Alan Beesley. "They represent some of the most patriotic South Africans who are committed to undoing the legacy of the current cruel and uncaring government. Those who form part of 'Team Fix South Africa' have already served this country in the public and private sectors for many years, and are now ready to take that contribution further," Mashaba said. He noted that his party would reduce the benefits Ministers received, including "excessive" catering and travel allowances, it would slash the budget for VIP protection, and ensure that Ministers were always transparent about the actions they took. He added that at a time of fiscal constraint and a cost of living crisis that is ravaging the nation, the perks of Ministers should be slashed before any other budgetary cuts. He said leaders must set an example for fiscal responsibility. "With their announcement today, we want to demonstrate to the South African people that we are not a party hallmarked by career politicians with no real-world experience in the portfolios they are meant to lead," he said. He committed that an ActionSA government would be appointed based on merit, and not political connections. "Whether ActionSA governs with a majority, or in coalition, we will be uncompromising on ensuring that we appoint the best persons to Cabinet positions who have real-world experience in the portfolios they are supposed to lead. We will not engage in cadre deployment, nepotism and cronyism. We will only appoint people on merit and with impeccable track records with a commitment to clean governance and service delivery," he said. While other political leaders might make space for compromised leaders within their ranks, Mashaba said ActionSA was unwavering in its commitment that the party's leaders must be above reproach. He explained that all candidates had undergone an extensive and rigorous selection process, adding that the party had spent countless hours interviewing candidates and scoring tests to ensure that ActionSA only sent the best people possible to Parliament to possibly fill Cabinet positions.
ActionSA national chairperson Michael Beaumont noted on Friday that patronage politics has no place in ActionSA, announcing the resignation of its Limpopo provincial chairperson Letsiri Phaahla and termination of his party membership. This after the party learnt about Phaahla joining the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, associated with former President Jacob Zuma. Beaumont explained that ActionSA leadership had received communication from Phaahla on Thursday on his intent to resign, citing resource-related challenges. However, Beaumont said that it was later found out that Phaahla had been negotiating his membership with the MK Party for some time, while "extolling the virtues of ActionSA" in the campaign. He alleged that Phaahla was offered considerable financial inducement to join MK, according to "credible sources". Beaumont said Phaahla's move was an indictment on himself. "Any person who leaves ActionSA to join MK clearly has been ideologically confused and, clearly, has a casual commitment to the notion of ethical leadership if they align with the values of Former President Zuma," said Beaumont. He said patronage politics had become too common in South Africa and candidate deadlines have become "like transfer windows" for those whose political alignment is for sale. "ActionSA welcomes the departure of such compromised leaders from its ranks prior to an election before they sit in a legislature where they abuse the role of public servant for their own ends," Beaumont said. He announced that Victor Mothemela - having served as the head of the party's campaigns in the province since 2022 - will take on the role of provincial chairperson. He said Mothemela had served as a Corporal in the South African Defence Force and a Detective Sergeant in the South African Police Service before going into business.

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has allocated R5-million to parties represented in Parliament - and the African National Congress (ANC) will receive the most from the electoral commission pay-day, in line with regulations governing the multi-party democracy fund. But ActionSA - which opposes the type of funding that gives a slight advantage to the ANC and others - has joined those questioning just how the party went from only having R100 000 in the bank, to managing to get into an out-of-court settlement with Ezulweni Investments over a R102-million debt for election campaign related work from the 2019 general election. Social media was awash with questions about how the party was able to fund its 112th birthday celebration at the weekend, given its persistent financial woes. The allocation means the ANC, as the biggest party, will receive the largest share. The information about the R5-million funding is contained in a government notice, dated 12 January, and advises that a total amount available for allocation for the period 1 January 2024 until 31 March 2024 to represented political parties from the multi-party democracy fund is R5 001 319. This will be shared among the parties with seat representation in Parliament. ActionSA party chairperson Michael Beaumont has insisted that the ANC was concealing its source of funding given its announcement that it was debt free. Beaumont said there is a "link" between Ezulweni Investments and state contracts which shows the "reasonable fear that South Africans may find themselves paying for this settlement". He said ActionSA is awaiting confirmation from the ANC treasurer-general, Dr Gwen Ramokgopa, on whether she will implement President Cyril Ramaphosa's offer to avail the documents in the interests of transparency. "The revelation of this connection to state contracts has been revealed in a tender awarded by the Newcastle Local Municipality to Gladmod Transport and Shories Project 47, which lists Mr Renash Ramdas as its sole Director according to the Companies And Intellectual Property Commission. This is the same Ramesh Ramdas who is listed as the CEO of Ezulweni Investments in the court papers against the ANC and who is believed to be married to the sole Director of Ezulweni Investments, Ms Ashnee Ramdas," Beaumont said. He went on to say: "The tender itself was for the amount of R200 000 issued on 27 October 2021 for the provision events services for an imbizo for the mayor of Newcastle Municipality, days before the 2021 local government elections. The reality is that no central repository exists for tenders across all spheres, departments and entities government in South Africa that would allow for a deeper assessment of how business interests connected to the Ramdas family may have benefitted more substantially from state contracts." He said this shows that key players in Ezulweni Investments are registered suppliers who do businesses with the state and are beneficiaries of state contracts, "undoubtedly" of more than just the Newcastle example. "Of further interest is that this tender was awarded in October 2021 [at] a time in which the ANC's debt would have been accruing legal costs and interest for nearly three years," Beaumont said. "It follows that the nature of the debt settlement agreement between the ANC and Ezulweni Investments represents a reasonable and rational concern that part or whole of the debt may be paid through future business conducted between the state and the Ramdas family. This matter can no longer be purported to be a private matter between the ANC and its creditor, but now directly involves all South Africans." He said in light of the liquidation process revealing that the ANC had less than R60 000 in all its bank accounts and failed to pay salaries for the most of 2023, there was no doubt that the sudden announcement of a solution, followed by the extravagant 8 January statement in Mpumalanga, brings into serious question the source o...

This after a Pretoria High Court ordered Minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa and Eskom to prevent loadshedding at certain public institutions such as schools, healthcare facilities and police stations among others. The policy conference is set to take place between the 12 and the 14th of this month. Political parties taking part in the national dialogues on the coalition government have proposed a number of changes in the law to prevent the collapse of coalition governments. Some of the suggestions include a limit to the number of motions of no confidence to avoid it being abused for political reasons.

In a wide-ranging conversation with TimesLIVE contributor and analyst Eusebius McKaiser, ActionSA national chairperson Michael Beaumont made several claims and arguments. He alleged that a councillor in Tshwane had offered a bribe to an ActionSA councillor to vote for Murunwa Makwarela on February 28. He expanded on the allegation and claimed that criminal charges would be laid tomorrow. Beaumont also argued that the DA made “an error of judgment” in how it went about trying to vote for a speaker of Tshwane, and that he agrees with the IEC decision that the 69 votes should be classified as spoilt. But in the details of the discussion with the podcast host, he puzzled through the tension between the importance of the principle of a secret vote, and the entitlement of political parties to enforce party discipline, especially at local government level where there is clear suspectibility to ill-discipline and potential bribery. McKaiser pressure-tested ActionSA's use of lie detector technology, suggesting that it is indicative of the party leadership not being certain that councillors they selected have integrity. Beaumont responded by suggesting that parties cannot always know “the hearts” of candidates when they are selected and that technology is one of several tools to be used to ensure that caucus decisions are adhered to. He argued that, at any rate, councillors have an enforceable right to conscience that they can expressly invoke by applying to be exempted from voting along caucus lines. McKaiser and Beaumont debated the cogency of this response. In the bulk of the remainder of the conversation between McKaiser and Beaumont, Beaumont went into great detail to explain various falsehoods, as he sees it, in the narrative given by former ActionSA leader Bongani Baloyi at a press conference about why he has left the party. Beaumont offered several counter-narratives that contest this week's public claims made by the former mayor of Midvaal. As always, it is up to listeners of the podcast to decide what you find compelling, or not, in the responses of the interviewee. Produced by Bulelani Nonyukela.

ActionSA's withdrawal from the Ekurhuleni coalition agreement on Monday is the latest setback for multi-party mergers trying to bring a semblance of stability to municipalities. ActionSA's national chairperson Michael Beaumont said the party had decided to withdraw and opted to become a constructive and robust opposition party. This is just the latest blow to the stability of the minority government currently leading the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality after Tania Campbell's removal and then reinstatement as mayor in a short time. BizNews correspondent Michael Appel spoke with Dr Corné Mulder, the Western Cape leader of the Freedom Front Plus, but in his capacity as the chairperson of the coalition technical committee. He is candid about the difficulties they've faced in bringing together so many different parties to form minority governments, as is the case in Ekurhuleni. Mulder admits that the continuous in-fighting between parties is robbing the alliance of valuable energy it should be expending on service delivery, never mind tarnishing the image of the workability of coalitions as an alternative to one-party rule come 2024. After extensive debate over the weekend, ActionSA decided that it will not be part of a multiparty coalition government with the Democratic Alliance (DA) and its coalition partners in Ekurhuleni, according to national chairperson Michael Beaumont. The decision means the party's councillors won't form part of the mayoral committee that Ekurhuleni Mayor Tania Campbell is scheduled to announce soon. But the move isn't surprising. ActionSA president Herman Mashaba has long decried the instability of the minority government in Ekurhuleni. The DA and its coalition partners do not have enough seats to form a majority government in the Gauteng metro. The fragility of the governance pact was most evident when Campbell was ousted in a motion of no confidence last month. However, she was re-elected as mayor last week with the support of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Her return was only the result of the failure of the African National Congress (ANC) and EFF to broker a coalition deal. Service delivery ActionSA doesn't believe that it can form part of another unstable government in Ekurhuleni, which it says won't be able to fend off motions of no confidence from the ANC. Instead, the party will take on an opposition role and ensure the DA coalition delivers services to residents, Beaumont said at a briefing on Monday. Beaumont said the party would "continue voting with the DA to block the return of the ANC", on council decisions, but negotiations would "be treated on a case-by-case basis". The party bemoaned what it believes is poor service delivery in the metro, even though it formed part of the previous government there. "We believe we need to fight for better service delivery for all residents in Ekurhuleni. This requires us to give up executive positions and ensure we can fight [un]encumbered by positions that co-opt our support. "Going forward, ActionSA will form part of the voting bloc that will work to keep the ANC out of this metro by defeating motions of no confidence and working to pass decisions that serve the service delivery needs of residents of Ekurhuleni," Beaumont said.

ActionSA says it will continue to work on growing the party despite the immediate dissolution of its Provincial Executive Committee in KwaZulu-Natal. The party in the province has been marred lately by internal squabbles which saw resignations of regional chairpersons such as Muhammad Khan and Busisiwe Ntshingila from the eThekwini region. Ntshingila likened ActionSA to the ANC in her resignation, detailing how she does not believe the party is the change that it portrays itself as. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to ActionSa's chairperson, Michael Beaumont.
Herman Mashaba says ActionSA in KwaZulu-Natal is not in crisis, despite a series of resignations by regional leaders who cited elitism and racism as reasons for their departure from the party's leadership structures. ActionSA has disbanded its provincial executive committee following a meeting of its senate on Tuesday. Party chairperson Michael Beaumont said in a statement that the decision was taken after observations that some members were intent on damaging ActionSA's image. ActionSA eThekwini chairperson Busisiwe Ntshingila resigned this week in a letter to the party. She described the party as being no different to the African National Congress (ANC). Ntshingila wrote, "With each passing day, I realise that ActionSA is no different to the ruling party. Protecting self-interest and cadre deployment are worded differently, but ultimately implemented identically." Another resignation came from Mohammed Khan, a regional chairperson in the uMgungundlovu region. Khan accused party leaders of undermining members. ActionSA women's forum chairperson Monica Mgaga also resigned, saying people who had helped grow the party were overlooked for promotions. Another member from the uThukela region said his resignation as chairperson was because of the party's elitism. "Here at ActionSA, we do not have value unless you enjoy close proximity to Herman Mashaba and you are white or Indian," MVJ Mlangeni wrote in his resignation letter. In response to the resignations, Mashaba denied that ActionSA was like the ANC. He said that as a new political party trying to grow its structures, hiccups were bound to be encountered. 'We don't have time to tolerate nonsense' He accused Ntshingila, who said ActionSA was no different to the ANC, of bringing these "tendencies" into ActionSA. "If people come into an organisation from the ANC and want to bring ANC tendencies into our organisation, we don't tolerate that. For us, we don't have time to tolerate nonsense. We have a big project, and we will not allow people who are for sale and allow them to be bought and influence us," Mashaba told News24. "She is part of these people trying to bring ANC tendencies into our organisation. She is the one who believes we are like the ANC. If she is not happy with ActionSA, she is welcome to leave. ActionSA is a voluntary organisation. If you are not happy, please step aside. We welcome her resignation. Our team and structures in KZN are happy with the decision." Mashaba added that, with every member who resigned, there were several others waiting in line to join ActionSA. ActionSA has no KwaZulu-Natal chairperson after the interim chairperson, Musa Khubeka, was removed from the position following allegations of misconduct. Khubeka is facing a disciplinary hearing. Mashaba said a new chairperson would be appointed by October. He said the party was being more stringent in its interview processes for a provincial chairperson because of past experiences. Former ActionSA provincial chairperson Makhosi Khoza had her membership terminated after facing a disciplinary hearing over public comments. Her decision to accept a committee position in the eThekwini council had soured her relationship with ActionSA, ultimately leading to her membership termination.
Action SA councilors in the KwaDukuza Municipality North of Durban have opened a case of assault and intimidation against the ANC in the council. This was after an altercation among some councilors that led to the collapse of the council meeting. The meeting was to debate a motion to remove the ANC mayor and speaker. ActionSA national chairperson Michael Beaumont on Tuesday assured KwaDukuza residents that his party will forge ahead with other political parties despite the Democratic Alliance's (DA's) decision to pull out of talks to form a new coalition government in the KwaDukuza Municipality. The DA pulled out of talks on Monday, after it accused ActionSA of “several fundamentally untenable and potentially illegal demands”. Coalition parties are hoping to unseat the African National Congress (ANC) in KwaDukuza, on the North Coast, when it tables a motion of no confidence on Thursday against the mayor, deputy mayor, chief whip and speaker. Beaumont stressed that all those who vote on Thursday will eventually show whether they stand with the ANC or with the residents of KwaDukuza. “We will work tirelessly to ensure that the best alternative is put on the table and that we serve the residents of KwaDukuza,” he said. ActionSA, the Independent Alliance (IA) and the African Independent Congress (AIC) met on Tuesday to continue coalition talks without the DA, however, Beaumont extended an invitation to the DA to rejoin the talks. The IA and AIC both affirmed that they would support the motion against current KwaDukuza mayor Lindi Nhaca and her counterparts. They called for opposition parties to set aside differences to help unseat the ANC. The DA said on Monday that ActionSA's demands were problematic and, because of them, the coalition government would not be a credible alternative to the ANC in KwaDukuza. “.because practices like cadre deployment and interference in budget processes would have continued unabated,” the DA said. It explained that in the draft coalition agreement, “ActionSA insisted on the inclusion of a clause that would compel selection panels to report to an unelected political party committee. This proposal mirrors the ANC cadre deployment policy that was recently described as unconstitutional and illegal by the Zondo Commission, and which the DA is seeking to abolish through a court application.” The DA also accused ActionSA of trying to create a political budget steering committee to manipulate the creation of budgets in the municipality. “There is no provision in law for unelected politicians to interfere in a legally-defined budget process, and the DA therefore also rejected this outrageous attempt by ActionSA to execute State capture in KwaDukuza municipality,” the DA said. The DA further distanced itself from any collaboration with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), which it said ActionSA was inclined to. “The DA has consistently made it clear that we will not negotiate agreements with the EFF, and that is a principle we will not violate for the sake of political expediency,” it said. The DA added that it would resume talks with ActionSA if it abandoned its proposals. ActionSA hit back against the accusations and explained that it wanted the multi-party coalition to be consulted on the appointment of senior managers in vital positions. “These appointments are made in Council by Councillors and are strategic to the change that must be delivered by a coalition government. Without the support of a majority in Council, these appointments cannot be made. This necessitates meaningful consultation to reach consensus,” ActionSA said. It clarified that it wanted input from the new coalition government on the annual budgeting process, in line with the Municipal Systems Act and supporting legislation. “Without input from the new coalition, wasteful expenditure – like the millions spent on VIP Protection, conferences, travel and catering – cannot be redirected to priorities like infrastructure and reliable services. The DA bizarrely characterised this as state capture, but it is how change is delivered when the ANC is removed,” ActionSA said. “ActionSA, alongside other parties, remains committed to removing the ANC and installing this coalition because it is what the residents of KwaDukuza deserve. I encourage the DA to simi...

Michael Beaumont, national chairperson of ActionSA, faced questions on Eusebius on TimesLIVE, about why his party had seemingly contradicted itself by describing the Democratic Alliance as dishonest over the weekend yet voting for its mayoral candidates this week. He attempted to defend their voting choices by drawing a distinction between supporting the DA per se and ensuring the African National Congress is cliffed, insisting the latter motivation trumps the "dishonesty" of the DA. McKaiser also engaged him on the political differences between ActionSA and the DA, and he conceded that "there is overlap" between the parties but that there are also "values differences" such as their different positions on race. He characterised the DA as being colour-blind whereas ActionSA, by contrast, accepts and understands the historical reality of racialised identities. Beaumont conceded, however, that his party had yet to fully develop a clear identity beyond contesting the local elections. McKaiser and Beaumont also explored other themes including the reality, which Beaumont conceded, that the party cannot survive without the leader Herman Mashaba, and that coalition arrangements are likely to be unstable because of a lack of political maturation within South African body politic. McKaiser, lastly, also pressured Beumont to explain reports of a journalist, Edwin Ntshidi, who had been sworn in as an ActionSA PR councilor, suggesting apparent unethical behaviour if the conflict of interest had not been declared while he was freelancing as a journalist during the elections. Beamont confirmed that the party is "investigating" the matter.

ActionSA has filed an urgent application with the Electoral Court against the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for “its failure to remedy the absence of ActionSA's name” from ballot papers. This after the party's name was omitted from draft ballot papers for Gauteng ward candidates. ActionSA said the IEC's legal reasoning and decision is patently unlawful and unconstitutional. ActionSA national chairperson Michael Beaumont said if the local government elections were to proceed with ballot papers that do not reflect the party's name, it would be unfair and prejudicial to ActionSA and to voters, making the election not free and fair. The IEC had until 10h00 on Wednesday to file their notice of intention to oppose the matter or abide ActionSA's request to the court. “In the IEC's current ballot paper, only our logo appears – the party's name does not appear and an empty space has been left in its place. The implication of this is that ActionSA supporters will be limited only to a candidate name and a logo to identify the party on the ballot, while other parties will have the benefit of their name or popularised acronym appearing,” said Beaumont. Beaumont argued that the IEC's decision to exclude ActionSA's name from the ballot paper, based on the Commission's chosen design of the ballot paper, was taken because irrelevant considerations were taken into account or relevant considerations were simply not made. He explained that it was the party's contention that it does not have an abbreviated name. “One of the reasons ‘ActionSA' was chosen as our name is that it complies with the IEC's own 8-character limit on abbreviated party names, thus, our party's name could always be used in full wheresoever it would be required,” he added. He said the party raised its objection to the draft ballot papers with the IEC, during and after the ballot sign-off held on October 2, however ActionSA was initially informed that the issue would not be addressed as the printing of the ballot papers had already commenced. Beaumont further stated that the IEC's assertion that the purpose of the presentation of the draft ballot papers was solely for political parties to sign-off and not intended to remedy defects that may be attendant to the registration of identifiers, is irrational. The party has affirmed in court papers that there is no legal basis for the Commission to refuse the party's demand to remedy the “gross omission of ActionSA's name” from the ballot paper and the party is confident the courts will share this perspective.

Michael Beaumont was doing a masterful job yesterday of teaching about the priority and necessity of vision. I was in my happy place. There were friends who I could here in our small church meeting space snickering and chuckling as Michael talked about vision, as if to say, “Scott must be lapping this stuff up!!” Michael then shared a story about Matthew Emmons that made me immediately think of you, the business owner. Emmons is University trained in finance and management and moonlights as one of the world's premier rifle marksman having won multiple Olympic medals. Emmons was competing in Athens, Greece during the 2004 Olympics and was on his way to winning a gold medal. It was time for the three positions competition where competitors “fire .22 caliber smallbore rifles from the prone, standing, and kneeling positions at targets 50 meters downrange. The bullseye is 10.4 millimeters in diameter, smaller than a dime” (Washington Post). It was time for his final shot and he drilled it. A bullseye. The official score was posted and Emmons was confused. It read “0”. Zero. What happened? It was a bullseye. Emmons was aiming at the target in the next lane over. Zero. He would not earn the gold medal. Sometimes we have vision but find we are aiming at the wrong thing. The Independent later reported Emmons admitting, “I didn't look at the number above the target before the last shot...I usually always look [through the scope] at the number first and then drop down to the target. I was just working on calming myself down and getting a good shot off. I should have looked.” Over the past month I had multiple conversations with people who want to start their owxn business. I asked them one simple question, “do you have anything written down?” Typically the answer is “no”. Here are three realities to know when we choose not to take a look at the right target. Three realities of not writing your vision down on paper. First, if you do not have a vision you will feel chaos. Do not be surprised by that feeling of restlessness, confusion, frustration, and detachment like things seem out of control. That is is the natural result of a lack of vision. The question now becomes, “do you wish to continue living in the uncertainty of chaos?” If you do, and believe it or not some go looking for chaos, then please be a solopreneur and do not bring others into your chaos. It's cruel and we have seen it lead to damaged relationships. If you wish to not spend your time in chaos, then let's move onto the second reality. Second, if you do not write your vision down then you do not have a vision. There is clear historical precedent in understanding vision and seeing out vision gets distributed. A Jewish story gives us insight into the priority of writing a vision down. The Jewish prophet Habakkuk is in a tense conversation with God and God responds, “write the vision down so those who read it may run” (Habakkuk 2:2). Think of all of the visions, ideologies, convictions, instructions, and master plans in history that have been written down. You cannot imagine walking into the Pentagon to a high level meeting among four-star Generals with battle plans...in your head. “Greetings Generals, I had this idea…” Global religions do not lean on the oral traditions along, they all have a “book”. I heard it said, “if you do not write it down it does not exist.” The reason we do not rush to write things down is because it is hard, and because it feels so elementary. We have got to get over both. Hard things breed endurance and thoughtfulness. Elementary things usually remind us that life is a series of living out fundamentals. Do the hard, elementary discipline of writing down your vision either with pen on a real piece of paper, or on a digital document that you will review regularly. Final reality. If you do not have a written vision then no one will run with you. You will be alone. Periodic isolation can be restorative and valuable. Continual isolation is predictably damaging and punitive in most societies. What may be worse is perceived companionship where you think you are surrounded by like-minded people and wake up one day realizing that you are running alone. How does that happen? Not having or communicating your written vision. Let me encourage, motivate, and persuade you. Please... Write your vision down so you have confidence in the target you are aiming at. Write your vision down so your kids know what Mom or Dad's ambitions are when you are not around to share them. Write your vision down so you don't live a life in the slow drain of chaos.
