Mindful Mondays With Ashley Bentley: Where Love Begins | Loving Kindness Meditation & Coming Home to Yourself

The Neurodivergent Experience

In this week's Mindful Mondays, Ashley Bentley begins December with one of the most transformative practices in meditation - Loving-Kindness, or Metta - a heart-centred practice that played a pivotal role in her own healing during one of the most difficult winters of her life.In this deeply reflective episode, Ashley shares how she first encountered loving-kindness meditation during a period marked by isolation, burnout, chronic illness, and profound emotional fatigue. She explores why this ancient practice is uniquely powerful for the neurodivergent nervous system - how cultivating genuine feelings of warmth, compassion, and connection can shift us from protection into regulation, soften old emotional narratives, and create real physiological change.Listeners will learn about the heart-based science behind metta, how this practice supports emotional resilience and nervous system safety, and why it so often brings unexpected breakthroughs and healing tears. This episode also includes a short, grounding Loving-Kindness meditation, guided with trauma-sensitive care and designed to meet each listener exactly where they are.If December feels heavy, lonely, or overwhelming, this practice offers a gentle place to rest. And later this month, Ashley will revisit metta in a very special Self-Love episode—closing the year with compassion, softness, and deep inner nourishment. Your brain is constantly switching between two modes of knowing: the left hemisphere's precision and prediction, and the right hemisphere's intuition and imagination. Between them lies the tender space where narrative forms — and where regulation becomes possible. In this episode, we explore how these two worlds create your ongoing “story of self,” and how that story becomes the map your nervous system uses to determine safety, danger, overwhelm, or possibility. You'll discover why old narratives feel so sticky, why neurodivergent minds process story so intensely, and how awareness creates the tiny space where freedom begins.Through vivid metaphors, grounded neuroscience, and a powerful guided practice, you'll learn to step into the witness — the part of you that can see the story without becoming it. And from that place, you can shift the state, shift the narrative, and shift your next move in the world. This is narrative neurobiology in action — and it changes everything.❤️ Support the ShowIf this episode resonated with you:✅ Follow or Subscribe to The Neurodivergent Experience⭐ Leave a quick review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify

November Neuroscience for the Neurodivergent Nervous SystemIn this deeply grounding episode, we explore the gentle, transformative world of somatic regulation - the bottom-up path that helps a neurodivergent nervous system feel safe, calm, and connected again. You'll learn why the body is often the first place we must return to when the mind becomes overwhelmed, and how sensation, rhythm, movement, touch, breath, and stimming can become powerful allies for healing. Together, we'll explore how widening your gaze, adjusting your posture, shaking out accumulated stress like animals do in the wild, and allowing intuitive movement can shift you from dysregulation into presence. With insights from neuroscience, mindfulness, Ram Dass, and trauma-informed wisdom, we'll reframe somatic practices not as “techniques,” but as ancient forms of remembering - ways the body whispers, “This is the way home.”This episode includes a deeply soothing Yoga Nidra journey, guiding you into the restorative space between wakefulness and sleep, where your nervous system can truly unwind, repair, and return to itself.By the end, you'll not only understand your body more -you'll trust it more. You'll hear it more. You'll come home to it more.❤️ Support the ShowIf this episode resonated with you:✅ Follow or Subscribe to The Neurodivergent Experience⭐ Leave a quick review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify

Blending mindfulness, neuroscience, and psychology, we explore how allowing what is can reduce anxiety, soften resistance, and bring peace to the neurodivergent mind and body.Ashley also shares a modern Buddhist parable and Jon Kabat-Zinn's timeless reminder:“Give yourself permission to allow this moment to be exactly as it is,and allow yourself to be exactly as you are.”The episode closes with a deeply hypnotic guided meditation - a forest journey into self-acceptance and inner stillness.❤️ Support the ShowIf this episode resonated with you:✅ Follow or Subscribe to The Neurodivergent Experience⭐ Leave a quick review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify

Chase is a photographer, director, artist, and entrepreneur. He was the CEO of an online education platform called Creative Live from 2014 to 2022. He's earned countless awards for his photography and creative work including a Pulitzer Prize for a New York Times story he contributed to called “Snow Fall.” He's also the author of multiple books including Creative Calling and Never Play It Safe. Notes: Opening Joke: "What has 52 teeth and holds back a monster?" We are all wildly creative. It is trained out of us as we grow older. Creativity is foundational to all human beings. It's on us to tap into our creativity and get it out of us to help solve problems, to create optionality, and to be innovative. Regardless of your job, becoming more creative will make you better at it. Play infinite games with transformational people. It seems like when we give to others, genuinely try to help them, and have a service orientation, good things happen to all. There are transactional people and transformational leaders. Let's strive to be transformative and play the long game with high-character people.  Transactional leaders are infuriating. Transformational leaders are inspiring. “A bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking, because its trust is not on the branch, but on its own wings.” Believe in yourself and your ability to bounce back if the thing doesn't go your way. Set up a series of experiments. Not all of them will work. You'll be better for having tried, and tried again, and then again. We learn from both our successes and our failures. Initially, Chase planned to attend medical school after graduating from undergrad. A few weeks before his graduation, his grandfather died and left all his photography equipment to his grandson. “Security is mostly superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” - Helen Keller "Safety is an illusion. It does not exist in nature, so why then do we seek it? "Playing it safe is about fear. And fear is only optimized for survival--not creativity, happiness, joy, connection, harmony, fulfillment, or any of the gifts you have to give or receive in this life." Intuition is everything. What if we started paying attention to that? "I don't know why they call us founders. I didn't find anything. I built that shit. We are builders." There are 7 basic levers for life: Attention Time – NYU Professor James Carse. Finite and infinite games. Treat life like an infinite game. What's the difference between systems and schedules? (why are systems better?) Intuition – The benefits of compounding trust. Chase's wife Kate. First met on a beach just after high school. Sparks were present, but no fire. “She had a special quality I couldn't quite place.” Went to college 1,500 miles apart. All along it was your intuition that kept you on notice.  How do you know when it's your intuition speaking? Why is playing it safe the riskiest thing we can do Constraints - What can we learn about constraints from Stefan Sagmeister? Play -  What can we learn about play from Novak Djokovic? Failure - Melissa Arnot Reid – Replaces the word “fail” with the word “live” – Instead of saying “I'm afraid to fail. She says I'm afraid to live.” Practice - Purposeful practice. Anders Ericsson Keynote speaking - Don't be a robot. Have fun. Let it rip. Results are better in a better state of mind. Do tiny experiments when the stakes are low.

He was the head football coach at the University of Oklahoma from 1999 to 2016. He led the Sooners to a 191-48 record over his career. His 2000/2001 team won the national championship. He earned the National Coach of the Year award the same season. Since 2020, Stoops has been a head coach in the XFL, winning an XFL Championship in 2023 with the Arlington Renegades. He played college football at the University of Iowa, earning team MVP his senior year as a defensive back. Notes: Coaches Bob has worked for: Hayden Fry at Iowa, Bill Snyder at Kansas State, and Steve Spurrier at Florida. He's worked for some amazing coaches. Relationships are everything. You must connect with people. You must be authentic. Learn from other coaches, but you have to be yourself Sherri Coale: “One of my favorite things about him is he's the busiest man on the planet but never appeared that way. That's a skill and an art. That fascinates me.” What makes a great head coach? They relate to people. They care about them. They can motivate and influence by clearly sharing the vision of the program and inspiring others to get on board. They are decisive people. Most importantly, they know how to connect with people. All leadership is a people business. If you can't connect with others, you'll probably struggle. Creating a “coaches forest” (beyond a tree) - Mike Stoops, Mark Mangino, Mike Leach, Bo Pelini, Kevin Sumlin, Kevin Wilson, Lincoln Riley, and more. How has Bob prepared so many guys to be successful head coaches? Hiring – “I always tried to hire people smarter than me.” A lot of people say this, but not all do this. Coach Stoops looked for people who had a track record of performance… And then he used his gut instincts after he spent time with him. He paid attention to how they treated his secretary, how they treated the waiter at lunch… Some call those the little things, but they were very important to Coach Stoops The overarching theme of the entire conversation was the simplicity of how Coach Stoops built his program. He didn't try to overcomplicate anything. He knew he wanted coaches who were accomplished, high-character people. And he wanted tough players who loved football. Their offenses may have looked exotic but they didn't have a ton of plays installed. They focused on what they did and then practiced it relentlessly so that they would execute better than their opponents. I think there's something beautiful in the simplicity with how he's built his program and the results speak for themselves. Great players want to be coached - Jeremiah Smith, Adrian Peterson. What he looked for in players: They have to LOVE football. Need to be tough and physical. Someone like Dan Cody. From Oklahoma, was skinny, and nobody on the staff wanted to give him a scholarship, but Coach Stoops did, and he turned out to be a great player. Liked to keep local guys home. Off-season workouts create the culture of the team. "We won because we outworked everyone." The attitude of the national championship team - "They were tired of being kicked around." And "I shared with them the history of Oklahoma and let them know the way it should be. When we started, they were a losing team." Josh Heupel - The most valuable recruit ever for Coach Stoops. Mike Leach was a 1 of 1. An original. He seemed relaxed and casual, but he was also very demanding that they do it right. He was also focused on just a few plays instead of trying to do everything. FOCUS. Do what we do Wife Carol - Impressive leader at Mary Kay. Won a pink Cadillac 16 years in a row. National Sales Director. Life/Career Advice - Go hard, be tough, be true to yourself, enjoy the struggle, and look forward to the fight. Nothing great happens without going through struggles first.

We are bringing back this episode again because so many kids are going back to school in the coming days. How are you feeling about going back to school? Are you excited? Nervous? We will look at two books about how other people think about returning to school. The first book is First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg. In this story, Sarah is worried about her first day of school and does not want to get up or do anything to get ready. She is new to her school, doesn't know anyone, and doesn't feel like starting over. Finally, she gets to school and realizes that all her worries are for nothing. The second book is Mae's First Day of School by Kate Berube. May also worries: What if the other kids don't like her? Her mom tells her about all the great things she will find there. Mae arrives at school and then hides in a tree. She has some visitors in the tree, and they talk about everything they are worried about. Sleep Tight!, Sheryl & Clark❤️

In this week's Mindful Monday video & podcast, Waylon talks about one thing we can do—every day—to transform our lives for the better.  "The notion of duty, which we talk a lot about in the military realm or public service, or say in my Buddhist upbringing...it's a very un-American word from the point of view of 'we Americans cherish our freedom or independence.' The way we generally think of it in America or write about it is: my freedom is separate from yours. So it's a sort of independent freedom, not interdependent, not co-dependent, not cooperative. It's all about 'me' and 'my freedom.' That's an interesting notion when you think about the notion of duty. It would seem to be a contradiction. So, what is our duty as human beings? I introduced this as the one daily reminder that if you do it every day, it'll transform your entire life.  I don't think that's an exaggeration. In the Buddhist teachings, they talk about vision or view, or Christians may think of it as mission. What is our mission in life?" ~ Waylon Lewis Learn more about Elephant Academy's Meditation course: https://bit.ly/meditation_for_crazy_busy_people  Subscribe to get our full conversations weekly: https://elephantjournal.com/videos

"So one of the things that early on, before I became a dad was I want to be omnipresent. I believe in this quote from Woody Allen "80% of success is just showing up." I want to be at every single event. I want to be the guy that people when they think of big fights, they think of me. Howard Cosell, of MMA, all that stuff and more." Ariel's Parents: "My mom still watches my show every week, and it's a long show about a topic she doesn't know a hell of a lot about. But she does it because she loves and supports me." "She's the mom that a lot of my brother's girlfriends and stuff would stay in touch with, even after they broke up. Because she just had that connection with people. She asks questions, she listens, she has a good mind and eye for things." "My dad is a workaholic, and he'd be the first to tell you that. He's the kind of guy who, every day, I'd see him Monday through Friday, wake up, go to work at around seven, come home at around seven. He would have this massive box of papers, he would sit at the dinner table, and he would work on all the papers. He would take his shower at like 9:30, go to bed, and start over again, and he couldn't have been happier." Syracuse: In 9th grade, he was reading Sports Illustrated and learned that the U.S.'s top sportscasting degree is earned at Syracuse. Bob Costas went there. Marv Albert went there. So he went to Syracuse. Being homesick and full of anxiety in college: "I wouldn't want to go to the dining hall to eat, so I just stocked up on Blue Diamond almonds. Which I have a hard time eating till this day because it reminds me of those days. Chef Boyardee, Alphagetti, that's what I was eating. I was watching sports in my room, by myself, I had a single room, and I was just crippled with this anxiety. And every time I would leave home to come back to school, like Thanksgiving break was over, and whatnot, Christmas break, I was sad. I was down." When he knew he wanted to cover MMA – back home in the fall of 2006 when he found himself in Champs Sports Bar, on Saint Laurent Boulevard, where the TVs were tuned to a UFC pay-per-view special. When the Quebec-born fighter Georges St-Pierre beat up Matt Hughes and scored a TKO to win the welterweight championship, “the place explodes like the Canadiens just won the Stanley Cup. And I'm like: ‘I want to be a part of this sport.'” Being the Heel – He learned from Howard Cosell, who was known as a heel, the pro wrestling term for the bad guy who people tune in to see fall.  “Heelwani” What does it take to be a great interviewer? Be prepared. Ask thoughtful questions. Don't script the conversation. LISTEN. Ask better follow ups. Make it feel more like a conversation. Feuds with Dana White: "I'm the type of person who doesn't back down, in large part because of my parents and my family, and they never back down, so how could I? And why should I? Especially if I'm not doing anything wrong. So I would say I never sought it, I always try to diffuse it, privately. I don't try to get into Twitter wars and things like that, with other people. Where it seems like they spend their life over there trying to go back and forth. That being said, to your point, which is a great point, having an understanding of pro wrestling, and storylines, and feuds. And I come out of my ESPN chapter as Helwani, and punching back, and it's "High road Helwani, no more" and all that. Yes, sure, there's a little bit of pro wrestling in there, and I love pro wrestling. And I believe that there are a lot of elements in pro wrestling in a lot of different walks of life, including politics and whatnot. Good guy/bad guy, heel/face, all that stuff." How conduct a great interview? "You have to listen, you have to be ready to open your mind, open your heart, and not feel, again, like you're just coming out guns blazing, and hitting someone with haymakers. Listen to them, be soft, be gentle, be welcoming. But, again, Howard Stern, no one did it better, he breaks you down to the point where you think that you're just two guys sitting around, or a girl and a guy sitting around, and there are not even cameras or microphones. They forget that they're on a show, if you're empathetic, if you're warm, if you're welcoming, that's the best result." Make the ASK - Ariel knocked on the door of a senior executive at ESPN. The guy didn't even know who he was. And he asked to be a sideline reporter at basketball games. The senior exec said nobody had ever done that in 20 years. If you want something, ASK for it. Steve Jobs said the difference between the people who dream about stuff and the people who make it happen is the willingness to ask. You gotta ask. "I walked into his office, and there's a lesson, I think, here, for a lot of people. And I was like, "Hey, I have no credibility in the world of basketball, very few people know who I am. I don't have many sources. But if you ever need someone, in the 11th hour someone gets sick, someone gets hurt, I'll be your guy. I'll be your sideline reporter. I know to do that. And he said, "I'll be honest; I've never heard of you. I've never seen MMA. I've never seen your work. But I've been here 20 plus years, and no one has ever done what you just did, so I'll keep you in mind." Which was an amazing thing to hear, and mind-blowing that no one does that. All the offices are right there, just knock on the door."
