Norma Baker-Flying Horse's designs are the stuff of fashion runway dreams. They display the sophistication, impeccable tailoring and gorgeous lines of her fashion idols, including Chanel and McQueen, but what makes them exceptional is that they incorporate gorgeous details that bespeak her Native heritage. Norma Baker-Flying Horse, whose company, Red Berry Woman, bears her given Native name, is a member of the Hidatsa, Dakota Sioux and Assiniboine tribes, and her creations often bear designs from these cultures rendered via traditional techniques, including intricate beadwork and/or appliques of smoked hide, sometimes even feathers or shells. And all in a spectacular color palette.Norma has been designing bespoke pieces in and for her community for years, but recently her reach has gone national and international. She showed at Paris Fashion Week in 2019; in 2022 she won Designer of the Year at Phoenix Fashion Week and was also the co-recipient of a Cultural Recognition Visual Arts Grammy; and just in the past year Miss Minnesota wore a Red Berry Woman gown in the Miss America pageant. Here she explains how she wed her forebears' cultural skills and know-how with a taste for glamor she unexpectedly cultivated as a little girl in toy heels on the North Dakota prairie to create a singular brand. She also describes the rigors of being a self-taught and self-guided business owner who won't even let a C-section keep her from delivering a gown on schedule.https://redberrywoman.com/

Have you ever wondered how we can break down mental health's complexities into a language everyone can understand? Do you want to be part of a movement that embraces mental health and empowers individuals to seek support and understanding? Mental health is a deeply personal journey that is unique to each individual. It is essential to recognize that mental health is not a one-size-fits-all concept. What works for one person may not work for another. It includes medications, therapies, and the overall healing and recovery process. Embracing the individuality of mental health treatment requires acknowledging the need for personalized approaches and understanding that it often involves a trial-and-error process. Consequently, it can be a challenging and disheartening process, but it is crucial to maintain hope and resilience. Understanding that setbacks are a normal part of the journey allows individuals to persevere, learn from their experiences, and seek strategies that bring about positive change. In this episode, we want to help individuals recognize the importance of addressing mental health and the supremacy of peer support with those that struggle with mood disorders, anxiety, and depression. Join us as we discover strategies to break down mental health into a language that anyone can understand to lead us to create a society that values and supports the mental well-being of its people, especially our young generation. Prepare to be enlightened as we uncover strategies that broaden our understanding of mental health, equipping us to support ourselves and others better. Today, we're joined by Jasmin Kotek, the Miss South Central, Partner of CultureChange, and Brand Ambassador of You Matter MN. Jasmin is a Minnesota State University Mankato graduate and is currently a mathematics teacher at Faribault middle school. She is also an 8-year coach, the head coach of the Northfield Hiliners Dance Team, Tri-City United Cheer Team, and the Cannon Falls Fall Dance Team. Jasmin is also the author of a children's book, "Believe, Bella," which strives to break mental health down to the vernacular that any age can understand. When she isn't in the classroom or coaching, she serves as Miss South Central and will compete for the title of Miss Minnesota this coming June. With mental health being one of her passions, deriving from her personal experiences and the experiences around her, she helped co-found a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, CultureChange, in which she helped pass a 4-part initiative at universities across the midwest providing access to mental health resources. Today she is a partner of theirs aiming to provide mental health resources through education and policy change. She also works with Change to Chill programming to promote her community service initiative as Miss South Central across Minnesota. "Mental health is not one size fits all. A medication that works for me won't work for someone else. If a therapy's right for me, that might not work for someone else either. And it was a lot of trial and error, and it got a lot worse before it got better." – Jasmin Kotek Show Highlights: (00:00:00) Episode disclaimer, highlight, and introduction (00:02:22) Welcoming today's guest, Jasmin Kotek. Key Takeaways: "Any transition and change are hard, but I knew I wanted more and different opportunities." – Jasmin Kotek "Mental health needs to be changed, and we must be the people that do that. Because you can't change what you can't see, and you can't see mental health. It's not like a cut where you see blood, and you can put a band-aid on it; it's something internal." – Jasmin Kotek "Most of the time, we desire to get over our depression and then forget about it. How can I no longer be depressed? How can I no longer struggle with anxiety? And then as soon as we feel any ounce of relief, we forget about that and act like it never happened." – Jasmin Kotek "As a man, it's so hard to express emotion outside of being happy or angry. I didn't even know that the emotion or feeling of betrayal was a thing. I didn't know what it looked like to process the feeling of being sad or hurt." – Abraham Sculley "The more you suppress your emotions, the more it takes you down to this downward spiral, and then it leads to things like mood disorders." – Abraham Sculley "A mood disorder essentially is the inability to manage your moods effectively." – Abraham Sculley "Depression is a real thing; it doesn't mean you're weak and don't have the mental and emotional strength. It's a mood disorder that affects the way you think, the way you feel, the way you behave." – Abraham Sculley "50% of mental health disorders are prevalent before the child turns the age of 14." – Jasmin Kotek "To be the mental health advocate is to be that person for others that I once needed myself. It's being an educator, giving them the resources, tools, and anything that can help someone else's journey become a little bit easier and letting them know that they're not alone." – Jasmin Kotek "It's okay to reach out for help, that you don't have to fight it alone." – Jasmin Kotek "It was hard to develop the ideas we wanted to put out there. But putting it into action, people were much more open to hearing what we had to say than I expected, at least." – Jasmin Kotek "All of the student body saw that mental health was needed, and we advocated for it. So, I feel when they brought it; it was the perfect timing because they saw that this was needed and just the timeframe of everything in the middle of Covid." – Jasmin Kotek "There's a lot more going on that I don't see what's there because mental health is invisible. You can't physically see it. And I saw the struggles of my athletes, so knowing that these young teenage girls were struggling, I knew that these students on campus were also struggling." – Jasmin Kotek "I will never forget the tears running down my face because I didn't realize like what these girls are struggling with that I didn't know." – Jasmin Kotek "67% of students are more likely to open up with a friend than they are with an adult and a mental health professional." – Abraham Sculley "One of the easiest things that anyone can do is to listen. So, if many of my athletes are dealing with depression, how amazing would it be if they could support each other? Because peer support is powerful." – Abraham Sculley "Knowing that you have that peer and someone you can turn to, that's priceless." – Jasmin Kotek "Growing up, I always struggled with aiming to be the ideal image of perfection, and it took me until way later in life to realize that we must always go for progress, not perfection." – Jasmin Kotek "One of the biggest things I've been trying to do recently is to sit down and just look at my day and notice what I achieved. Because while I may not be perfect, I became better today by doing some things." – Jasmin Kotek "We're human beings, and we are resilient. There are things we go through in life where it seems like that's it. But then we realize, no, it's not. And learn something from those difficulties, and that alone is something to celebrate." – Abraham Sculley "I am better than nobody else, and nobody else is better than me. It's hard to compare yourself to others, especially with mental health, and seeing others' achievements can factor into it." – Jasmin Kotek "Taking our stories and bringing them to life and turning struggles into strengths, opening that conversation and normalizing it is the best way to remove the stigma about mental health." – Jasmin Kotek "Mental health to me is that holistic, healthy lifestyle, but how that translates into your overall emotional well-being." – Jasmin Kotek Connect with Jasmin via the following: · Website: www.jasmincatekotek.com ·Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jasmin.kotek/; https://www.instagram.com/misssouthcentral2023/ · Twitter: https://twitter.com/missjasminkotek · TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@missjasminkotek Unlearn the Lies About Mental Health is Hosted by Abraham Sculley. · Contact Speaks 2 Inspire to learn about S2I programs: https://speaks2inspire.com/services/. · Mental health resources for students: https://speaks2inspire.com/resources/. · Connect with Abraham on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/abrahamsculley/. · Order a copy of Unlearn the Lies at https://amzn.to/32B2jRh. · Join the Unlearn the Lies About Mental Health Facebook group: https://bit.ly/UTLcommunity. 14 Ways to Support Your Students' Mental Health [free guide] - https://bit.ly/mentalhealthguide4 This episode is powered by Speaks 2 Inspire, the mental health solution for young adults suffering in silence. Cynthia James is a risk taker at heart. When she was younger she was preoccupied with surviving. But little by little, she moved from welfare to possibilities in part, because of her grandma's wisdom. She kept planting seeds, encouraging Cynthia to think bigger. And she went from being a flight attendant to Miss Minnesota, then becoming an actor and a singer! There are a lot of good nuggets in our conversation. Mainly, Cynthia thinks it's important to know: what's lights you up? And to ask yourself: what would you do for free? My favorite thing she said was: fear is nothing but energy and info. We're always evolving and growing. There will be fear, but it's normal and it's just energy. Use it to your advantage. And stay away from the people telling you that you can't. Keep your mind on the CAN. More about Cynthia: It took Cynthia James many decades to find her authentic voice; today, she supports clients around the world to do the same. In this accessible, inspiring guide, she examines why uncovering your own voice is so important and shares tools and guidance for how to get there. The girls chat with former Miss Minesota Lucia Arseni, a smoke show Eastern European, who explains how she is living and loving life being unapologetically herself. They discuss the importance of being extra or glam for yourself and not others... and being comfortable every day in your own skin. They determine that you should only buy labels if you truly appreciate couture, you should be the same kind of confident in a onesie or red bottoms, and you gotta own it when you make a decision for your look each day. Lucia breaks down her bench and the criteria for the players on it, and they discuss the trouble (or not) with vanity during quarantine. Halima Aden is one of the world’s first hijab wearing supermodels. A black, Somali-American, born in Kenya, Halima was the first contestant of a Miss Minnesota beauty pageant to wear a hijab. Now 22, she appears on magazine covers such as Elle and Vogue and walks the runway for famous designers. “I am not afraid of being the first”, she says with a smile. “I have an opportunity, through my modelling, to change the way that Muslim women are viewed, to give them a platform to have their voices heard, I’m mindful, and proud, of that responsibility.” How does Halima stay faithful to Islam while displaying herself so publicly? Alina Isachenka is a former model, now a BBC journalist, who has exclusive access to Halima as she prepares for the catwalk backstage in Istanbul and New York. Halima talks about how she is using her faith to make a difference in the fashion industry all over the world. Producer/presenter: Alina Isachenka (Photo: Halima Aden. Credit: Fadil Berisha)

Today on the podcast we sit down with three entrepreneurs and talk about handmade goods! This week we chat with Dani Trester, organizer of Ritz Crafters, and local makers Michaelene Karlen of Ballerina Botanicals Organic Skincare and Shelly Daood of Bound to be Creative. Michaelene is a professional dancer and Miss Minnesota 2018. She founded Ballerina Botanicals a few years ago with her mom after being diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. Shelly always felt the need to be creative, leading this mom of three to start selling her handmade, one-of-a-kind hats, even some right off her head. Today we had a great time recording this four-person podcast (the first that I’ve ever recorded solo!), which included the lights in the room frequently turning off as we were serenaded with dog toys in the background. Today on the podcast we talk about how these ladies got started with their maker-style businesses and what strategies they’ve used to grow their companies. We also chat about Ritz Crafters, a new-to-Rochester indie craft show coming to the city February 9th. This event will take place at the 4H Building at the Olmsted County Fair Grounds, showcasing new ideas and unique, technical crafting skill sets. Forty-five different vendors will participate in the event. This week on the podcast we sit down with entrepreneur Zoey Jantsan to hear about all her latest endeavors. Zoey is the former Miss Minnesota US International. She’s also entering into her second year as a real estate agent with RE/MAX and is the current chair of the Women’s Roundtable for the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce. We had a very full discussion on the podcast today including: • A chat about a new community kindness initiative in Rochester that Zoey is a part of, called Read Roch, to connect members of the community through books. • Other initiatives going on right now that Zoey is excited about including the upcoming Paws and Claws Annual Wine Tasting Fundraiser, EarthFest, and the Rochester Flag Project. • What Zoey’s experience was like as Miss Minnesota and how it impacted her public speaking. • Zoey’s passion for animal and environmental conservation. • The challenges she’s faced in growing her real estate career. • The importance of space for business women to share ideas. “When you’re running and you’re starting a new project, and when you’re starting a new career, no one knows that that’s what you do besides you at that point. And to go from there to have the whole community or have the whole clientele know that’s what you do and that’s what sets you apart, I think that’s the biggest hurdle [to growing a business].” -Zoey Jantsan

Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Today I speak with Fox News Religion Correspondent Lauren Green about her brand new book Lighthouse Faith: God as a Living Reality in a World Immersed in Fog. Here's the ground we cover in this conversation: What is the Lauren Green origin story? (00:35 - 03:32) What's the story behind Lighthouse Faith, why was this the right season for you to write this book? (03?33 - 05:05) Why do you think it's such a challenge for people to perceive God as a more hands-on presence? (05:06 - 06:40) How have your skills as an award-winning journalist played a part in this book? (06:41 - 08:15) Every book writing experience is a unique journey. What did you learn about yourself while you were writing Lighthouse Faith? (08:16 - 09:01) What are some simple things/tips that we can do daily in this busy life to see God more clearly and love him more presently? (09:02 - 10:14) What parting encourage or challenge would you like to share with each reader as they finish the book? (10:15 - 11:07) Lighthouse Faith is your first book, any plans in the future for another? (11:08 - 12:33) Where can people go to connect with you and find out more about Lighthouse Faith? (12:34 - 13:33) About the Book: Is God Just a Distant Concept? An Award-Winning Religion Correspondent is Convinced the Answer is No and Explores the Possible Relationship with Our Creator Fox News Religion Correspondent Lauren Green uses her wealth of stories, vast network of contacts, and her own extensive study of theology to take the reader on a unique journey of spiritual discovery. With few female authors writing in the field of theology, Green provides an important perspective to all who wish to move closer to not only a deeper relationship with God but an understanding of what makes that possible. Green gathers insight from some amazing guides along the way, through personal conversations with some of the leading minds in the world on the topic of Christianity. These include: Timothy Keller John Piper Alister McGrath William Lane Craig John Lennox Sir John Polkinghorne Amy Beckman Elizabeth Lev … and many more Is God simply an accessory that we carry with us? Something similar to what we might download from a music site to suit our personal tastes—a personal assistant in a way? Or is He His law, His structure, and His authoritative Word contained in the Holy Scripture, an objective reality to which you daily shape your life? If we believe or know we should believe that it's the latter, how do we make this happen? How do we live joyfully under God's will in a world so drenched in the will of human desire? Lighthouse Faith explores the heart of the Christian doctrine and a pathway of perceiving God as an interactive hands-on presence; a caring and loving being. The first commandment is a life-giving force loaded with information about the world in which we live. This law stands atop the other nine commandments as a beacon of light, illuminating the created order, just as a lighthouse lamp shines in a darkened space, heralding a way to safety. About the Author: Lauren Green currently serves as Fox News Channel's (FNC) chief religion correspondent based in the New York bureau. She joined FNC in 1996. Most recently, Green reported live from Rome in 2013 on the election of Pope Francis, as well as on the retirement of Pope Benedict XVI. Additionally, she provided live coverage of the beatification of Pope John Paul II from Rome in 2011 and Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the United States in 2008. Prior to joining FNC, Green served as a weekend news anchor and correspondent at WBBM-TV (CBS-2) in Chicago, IL. From 1988 to 1993, she was a general assignment reporter at KSTP-TV (ABC-5) in St. Paul, Minnesota. Outside of her career at FNC, Green is a reputable concert pianist with a degree in piano performance from The University of Minnesota. She has interviewed some of the most prominent people in the classical music world including Placido Domingo, Pierre Boulez, Joshua Bell and has covered such events as the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and opening night of The Metropolitan Opera. In 2004, she released her debut album, "Classic Beauty."
