Designers can draw inspiration from various elements, including artworks, photographs, or even the human emotions and stories that reside behind each project. This allows for a more profound and meaningful experience, as the design connects with its audience on a deeper level. Similarly, examining how other aspects of design, like performances and stage design, can offer valuable insights for memorial designers. In the AIP podcast, host Melissa Daniel and Christina Sturdivant Sani, native, wife, and mother, known for her exceptional work in esteemed publications like the Washington Post and CityLab, discusses Rihanna's halftime show at the 2023 Super Bowl, focusing on the design of the performance set. We also discuss the MLK Memorial design competition and how "The Embrace," underwent noticeable transformations from its initial rendering to its final design. Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve (NHP&P) is comprised of six sites. These sites are spread over a large area across south Louisiana so it is essential to plan out your trip carefully. We visited in January 2020 but currently most of the sites are closed or with limited access because of Covid-19 restrictions. In this episode, we describe the six different sites that comprise the NHP&P but also speak to Ranger Briana to learn about the history and context of the NPS unit as well as the history of the people. She also explains the story behind the park's namesake, Jean Lafitte. We also attend a talk presented by a volunteer which focuses on the pre-Civil War economy and history of the South; the false narratives that justified the horrific institution of slavery; and the unique cultural influences of New Orleans. This month's Organization feature is the Memorial Foundation which helped to build the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC. The MLK Memorial is the 395th unit in the National Park Service and is the first memorial to an African-American on or near the National Mall. The Memorial Foundation aspires to a world in which the memorial serves as a beacon that inspires people around the globe to apply the principles of democracy, justice, hope, and love. They continue Dr. King's work through Global Youth Leadership Conferences and programs at the Memorial. Today on Sojourner Truth, our special honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On Monday, January 20, millions of people across the United States marked Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is observed on the third Monday of January each year. It took a hard-fought grassroots campaign to win the establish of Dr. King's birthday as a holiday. The movement for Dr. King's birthday as a national holiday was met with great resistance, but the first MLK National Holiday was finally won and marked in 1986. Today, there continue to be efforts to sanitize Dr. King and hide the revolutionary who he was. It was ironic that the White Supremacist-in-Chief in the White House and his vice president were obliged to visit the MLK Memorial yesterday. This, after leading the way for rolling back rights won in the Civil Rights, Black, Brown and environmental movements. What is often hidden is that Dr. King put forward democratic socialism and that he called for a general strike. When he came out against the War in Vietnam in 1967, he was vilified in mainstream media and denounced by Civil Rights leaders. Funding for his movement was pulled, but Dr. King didn't step back. He put together his fight against racism with being anti-war and called for a Poor People's Campaign. It was at that point that he was assassinated. His ability to bring people together across the divides of race and issues was considered dangerous by the FBI, which made efforts to discredit Dr. King, including by threatening him. By April 1968, just months after he called for the Poor People's Campaign, he was assassinated. Today, we focus on what the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood for and how his legacy and demands are being carried out today and by whom. Our guests are Dr. Peniel E. Joseph and Bettie Mae Fikes. Dr. Joseph is the Barbara Jordan Chair in Political Values and Ethics at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and founding director of the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy at the University of Texas at Austin. His latest book, "The Sword and the Shield: The Revolutionary Lives of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr.," will be published by Basic Books on April 7, 2020. Bettie Mae is a civil rights icon who was known as "The Voice of Selma." She joined the civil rights movement in Selma, Alabama, as a young teenager and her singing voice riveted a movement. It was known to inspire those preparing to be arrested along with Dr. King.
An estimated 1,500 people attended the 50th Anniversary MLK Memorial Breakfast at the Boston Convention Center Monday, to look back on the late civil rights activist and talk about how his words are more important now than ever. WBZ NewsRadio's James Rojas reports.

Recorded on Martin Luther King Day, this episode of Dinner Table politics recounts MLK's time as a Trekkie, and how the civil rights leader persuaded Nichelle Nichols to keep playing Lt. Uhura. (The geeky nature of this story does not make Abby very happy.) Jim and Abby also discuss the fallout from the Covington School encounter with Native American protestors that demonstrated just how far we have to go to fulfill Dr. King's dream. President Trump's (short) visit to the MLK Memorial also gets a mention, and both Jim and Abby identify their least favorite DC monument. And who really is fourth in command of the Enterprise?
Donald Trump has the figure and muscle tone of a baby whale but he moved through the MLK Memorial in Washington on Monday like Usain Bolt. Traveling with the equally intolerant and odious Mike Pence, the U.S. president was in and out of the memorial in two minutes. But he went. Which our own Kori Schake says speaks to the power of norms in our society and is a good thing. Every major 2020 contender was out on the campaign trail Monday. They were honoring the legacy of MLK and speaking to the American people about their vision for America. Donald Trump made a 2 minute surprise trip to the MLK Memorial and said NOTHING. Disgraceful.Rudy Giuliani continues to try and twist and spin the Trump Tower meetings narrative. How long did Trump try to get it built? Rudy has always said it was up until November of 2016, but now says that's all "hypothetical." It makes no sense. We talk to Politico's Daniel Lippman, former Deputy Secretary of Labor Chris Lu and USA Today's Eliza Collins!

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial lies along the center line of leadership that extends from the Lincoln Memorial to the Jefferson Memorial on Washington's National Mall. At 30 feet in height, the sculpture of MLK on the "stone of hope" is 11 feet talller than the statues of Lincoln and Jefferson. In honor of Dr. King's birthday, we will revisit our coverage of the dedication of his Memorial in 2011. Over a decade in the making, October 16, 2011 marked the official dedication of this historic Memorial in Washington, DC and the 16th anniversary of the Million Man March. However, the original dedication date was set for August 28, 201, the 48th anniversary of King's "I Have A Dream" speech. But, an earthquake in the mid-Atlantic and the untimely visit of Hurricane Irene forced a delay in the official ceremony. Nonetheless, World Footprints covered all of the dedication events from August through October and today's show shares interviews from celebrities and news makers who participated in the celebrations. Ambassador Andrew Young, Lalah Hathaway, Reverend Jesse Jackson, Rabbi Israel Dresner, and former Secretary of State Madeline Albright will offer their thoughts and memories about Dr. King. From the official dedication we’ll share music and remarks on the National Mall from Archbishop Desmond TuTu, Stevie Wonder and America's first African-American President, Barak Obama. From our perspective, watching President Obama walk past the Inscription Wall at the MLK Memorial to the dedication stage to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was incredibly powerful.
