In this week's Gaming Fun Fact we go back in time to take a look at motion controls on the Sega Genesis. The Sega Activator is a controller that allows players to move, kick, and punch their way through various experiences like fighting games. It is a ring of infrared sensors set up in different segments that represent individual inputs, the player would stand in the middle of the ring and interrupt the infrared beams to register inputs. Black Ops 6 has released day one on Game Pass, the first in the series to do so. However, as what was an annual AAA release that required a purchase to access, some are concerned that the expected surge in Game Pass subscriptions will only be temporary, meaning Microsoft could have surrendered too many sales.

Today we're working up a sweat as Anthony, Kelly, Arnaldo, and Paul are here with a special Patron request episode to discuss video game motion controls! First, we dive into the biggest question: why do we want motion controls in video games? (10:30). Some of the first motion control concepts are up next with arcade classics like Hang On (19:00). With the arcade in the rear view mirror, we move to the home market, first with the Atari Mindlink (27:00) and then the inspiration for the Infinity Gauntlet (probably) and antagonist of lefties everywhere, the Power Glove! (35:00) Pathetic flailing simulator the Sega Activator is lovingly discussed next (57:00) followed by the Sony Eye Toy (1:07:00) and the first big motion control success, Babysitting Mama! On the Nintendo Wii! (1:12:00) For the last segment we try to capitalize on the success of the Wii with the Microsoft Kinect (1:30:00) and Playstation Move/PSVR and talk about what the future of motion controls will look like (1:59:00). It’s like we never left! No, we haven’t streamlined our production process so much that we can release new podcast episodes every two weeks (yet). Instead, our Roundtable Moderator, Peyton, has crowded into a tiny studio with three very special panelists for a feature-length discussion on a central aspect of the Zelda franchise: combat! If you found us through iTunes, Google Play, or some other podcatcher, then I encourage you to check out our website, zeldauniverse.net; we publish Legend of Zelda and Nintendo related news, exclusive editorial content and features, game guides, and more. You can also subscribe to ZeldaUniverseTV on YouTube and Twitch or join our large, welcoming forum community! That’s right: the ZUCast Roundtable is now a separate release on the same channels as the main podcast. We figured that Peyton and his guests could use more of a free-range environment in which to…graze…or, you know, discuss things, and it’s tough to do that in a main ZUCast episode without stretching the whole thing to several hours in length. Was this a good decision? I don’t know! Let us know in the comments! Or one of our many other feedback avenues! Anyway, as I mentioned, this month’s roundtable is all about combat in the Zelda series: controls, style, balance, etc. If it’s combat-related, you’ll probably hear about it in this discussion! Special thanks to this month’s panelists (of whom you might lose track occasionally because they apparently like trolling listeners): Cody Davies, Zelda Universe’s Community Manager and Most Enigmatic Human Elias Thompson, ZU Twitch Director and award-winner of Most Mentioned on the ZUCast Jesse McCarty, a.k.a. GameOverJesse, YouTuber and former ZU writer As usual, Peyton Garrett (a.k.a. EmperorP) serves as discussion moderator. Enjoy the roundtable, and look out for our next standard-format episode at the beginning of April! Please give us feedback! You can do so directly at podcast@zeldauniverse.net, on in our thread on the ZU Forums, or on our Facebook or Twitter, @ZeldaUniverse. Listen to the roundtable on YouTube The post The ZUCast Roundtable: Combat Mechanics in Zelda first appeared on Zelda Universe.
