They analyze recent political trends—Trump's tightening grip on power, weakened democratic institutions, and polarizing rhetoric—debating whether these signal an authoritarian shift. The conversation then takes a dramatic turn: If fascism is emerging, is it time to leave the U.S.? To ground the discussion, they highlight high-profile Americans who have already fled, linking their departures to Trump's impact.Yale philosophy professor Jason Stanley, a fascism expert, is leaving the U.S. for the University of Toronto in fall 2025, citing America's authoritarian slide under Trump. Author of "How Fascism Works," he points to threats like Columbia University's compliance with Trump's demands as evidence. Stanley, who compares the U.S. to pre-WWII Germany, wants to protect his family and continue his work from Canada, sparking talk of a U.S. intellectual exodus.Former Gawker publisher Nick Denton also left, settling in Budapest and citing the U.S.'s authoritarian leanings as his motivation. We'll also explore the limits and responsibilities of judges, as well as the inconsistencies and biases in the system that arise when high-profile political figures are involved.   Our hosts also explain how there is a delicate balance to ensuring justice is served timely and properly, without judges succumbing to external pressures.   Have you ever discovered that one of your favorite places is being renovated? Like your grandmother's kitchen, your favorite restaurant, or even a museum, and you worry that the charm or the appeal of the place might be gone after the renovation? Podcast editor Patrick O'Sullivan and Producer Mary Donohue went to just such a place, the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale in New Haven. We had both been to the museum many times before the pandemic. But, the newly-reopened Peabody Museum is not just better, it's fantastic!   The massive dinosaur and prehistoric fossil collections in the Burke Hall of Dinosaurs are what every schoolchild remembers from a fieldtrip.  The renovation has created new space for exhibiting more of its cultural, anthropological, and other scientific collections, including never-before displayed artifacts and contemporary art. For example, one intriguing  new area was the History of Science and Technology gallery that included Yale's first microscope — purchased in 1734. Just this summer, the Hall of the Pacific has opened with artwork, photographs and artifacts that celebrate the cultures of Pacific Islander communities.   With a $160 million dollar bequest, they've increased the size of the museum from 30,000 to 44,000 square feet, added 5 classrooms, new galleries and a study gallery for faculty and students to use. The space is bright, inviting and provides visitors a place to sit down or bring lunch. Maybe the two things that will have the biggest impact in the future is that the museum is now completely free to visit. They have also worked hard to correct old, outdated information as well as to interpret the artifacts in a way that acknowledges their history more fully and authentically.   The guest for this episode is David Skelly, Director of the Peabody Museum of Natural History and Yale Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.   Our thanks to David Skelly and Steven Scarpa, Associate Director of the museum's Marketing & Communications Department for making arrangements for the podcast recording as well as a fabulous tour.   Don't forget that the museum admission is now free! You can reserve timed entrance passes on the museum's website to help you plan your visit. https://peabody.yale.edu/visit   And once you're in New Haven, don't forget that the Grove Street Cemetery from Grating the Nutmeg episode # 186 is just blocks away - or check out the New Haven Museum's new Amistad gallery!   ------------------------------------------------------ Can you spare $10 a month to help support the new voices, research, and books we feature on Grating the Nutmeg? Just how safe is the online world? Yale Professor of Law and Philosophy Scott Shapiro delves into cybersecurity in his book, Fancy Bear Goes Phishing. The book's title derives from the exploits of ‘Fancy Bear', an elite unit of the Russian military intelligence that hacked the US Democratic National Committee in 2016. From a bored graduate student who accidentally crashed the nascent internet, to cyber criminals and bot farms, Shapiro looks at the dark history of the information age. Dr Alice Hutchings first began researching cybercrime in the late 1990s, while working in industry, and is now Director of the Cambridge Cybercrime Centre. She argues that the romanticised image of the underground hacker as an anti-authoritarian ‘lone wolf' who possesses technological wizardry is outdated. Hacking has become industrialised with criminals able to buy ‘off-the-shelf' tools to infect computers. While hackers constantly look to exploit vulnerabilities within the technology, one of the major weak points are users themselves. Jenny Radcliffe's job is to expose the flaws and weaknesses in security operations. In People Hacker she explains how she uses a blend of psychology, stagecraft and charm to gain access to computer systems, and reveals how people can boost their security and make her job more difficult. I remember being tasked with suctioning the phlegm from his lungs with a special cannula. That brief experience gave me a sense of the power of healthcare, reinforcing my career goal of being a doctor. Much later, as a medical student and then fully-minted MD, the in-hospital battle waged against death combined with the knowledge of its ultimate inevitability, created the first stirrings of existential confusion – Was what I did enough? #1005: I'm back with Dr Becca Levy to talk about Values & Habits in the key areas of life fulfillment, and look at how we have positive and negative perspectives and expectations around aging. And “aging” these days seems to be expected at earlier and earlier ages. To a great degree, we will age as we expect to age. So in this episode we talk to an expert around just that, the expectations we have and will likely manifest in our lives. Every day older we become, we should be adding to our ability. Yes, at some point late in life we may find some lessening strengths, but that is not a given. Animals are not hobbling around. They are full tilt till the end. Why can't that be you and me? Dr. Becca Levy is an award-winning Yale Professor of Psychology and Global Health. She received her Ph.D. in psychology from Harvard University. She has given testimony before the United States Senate on the effects of ageism and contributed to briefs submitted to the United States Supreme Court in age-discrimination cases. She is credited with creating a field of study that focuses on how positive and negative age stereotypes affect the health of older individuals. And she is the author of Breaking the Age Code: How Your Beliefs About Aging Determine How Long & Well You Love, which just came out. Find it anywhere you get books and connect with Becca at becca-levy.com. I encourage you to listen to our previous episode, 1003, where Becca and I dig into ageism and how we can age better by viewing it more positively, and of course, taking more positive actions. #1003: How will you age? Whether you are no in your late twenties or late fifties or further, everyone feels they are getting older. Of course we are chronologically getting older, so is a child, but we view children as growing older and better. Earlier and earlier these days however we view every day getting older as a negative and we are less capable. Should this be the case? And how is the negative view of aging hurting us all, no matter what age you're at as you hear this. This is a big topic of interest for me. I'm 51 and feel more capable than ever, and want to maintain this as long as possible. So I brought on an expert. Dr. Becca Levy, Ph.D., is an award-winning Yale Professor of Psychology and Global Health. She received her Ph.D. in psychology from Harvard University and held a National Institute on Aging postdoctoral fellowship at the Division of Aging and Department of Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Clay Jenkinson welcomes Yale Professor of History Joanne Freeman for a one on one conversation about her new book, The Field of Blood: Violence in Congress and the Road to Civil War. In the book, Freeman writes about the physical violence on the floor of the US Congress in the decades before the Civil War. Legislative sessions were often punctuated by mortal threats, canings, flipped desks, and all-out slugfests. Mentioned on this episode.
