Pallbearer [00:34] "An Offering of Grief" Sorrow and Extinction 20 Buck Spin SPIN048 2012 Full-length debut from this heavy doomy band from Little Rock AR. Easily one of the best records of 2012. Ray Charles & Milt Jackson [09:06] "Soul Meeting" Soul Meeting Atlantic SD 1360 1962 Two great tastes that vibe great together. Featuring Ray on piano, Milt on vibes, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Percy Heath on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. This one was written by Jackson, with illuminating parts from both Milt Jackson and Kenny Burrell. Curtis Harding [16:08] "Freedom" Soul Power Burger Records BRGR600 2014 Debut outing from this Atlanta musician. Describing his sound as "slop 'n soul", this one track has a definite Arthur Lee feel. Lou Rawls [18:49] "A Whole Lotta Woman" Soulin' Capitol Records T 2566 1966 Not a whole lotta love, not a whole lotta Rosie, but a whole lotta woman. John Coltrane with Red Garland [21:27] "Theme for Ernie" Soultrane Prestige 7142 1958 One of Coltrane's showcases for his distinctive sheets of sound style. Joined here by Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and again Art Taylor on drums. Les and Larry Elgart and their Orchestra [26:24] "You're My Thrill" Sound Ideas Columbia CL 1123 1958 Hailing from Pompton, New Jersey, these brothers developed their "Elgart Sound" in 1952 and released over half a dozen albums before parting after this album to pursue their musical interests. Mary Martin et al [30:02] "The Lonely Goatherd" The Sound of Music (Original Broadway Cast) Columbia Masterworks KOL 5450 1959 Now that's what I call yodeling! Pre-Julie Andrews obviously. Mary Martin was perhaps best known as playing the title role in the Broadway production of Peter Pan. Not sure how I knew this, but maybe it was due to living in New York for 20 years naking Broadway trivia inescapable. The Sinceros [33:23] "Take Me to Your Leader" The Sound of Sunbathing Epic EPC 83632 1979 The sticker on the cover says that this track is their featured single, so that's what I'm going with. Power pop-y new wave-y. Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass [37:10] "Casino Royale" Sounds Like... Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass A&M LP124 1967 You know I love a good shaggy dog of a film, and Casino Royale is definitely that. Well, the Daniel Craig version is too, but I'm talking about the 1967 comedy version with David Niven as Sir James Bond. Ravi Shankar [39:47] "An Introduction to Indian Music" The Sounds of India Columbia CS 9296 1968 (originally released in 1958) Re-released to tap into the growing interest thanks to the Beatles' interest in Indian music (specifically George Harrison). Relax! Simon & Garfunkel [43:56] "We've Got a Groovey Thing Goin'" The Sounds of Silence Columbia CS 9269 1966 Helped out here by The Wrecking Crew, including Glen Campbell and Joe South on guitar, Hal Blaine on drums, and Larry Knechtel on the Ray Charles-esque electric piano. Scott Walker + Sunn O))) [47:22] "Brando (Dweller on the Bluff)" Soused 4AD CAD 3428 2014 On the surface, it's an odd pairing, but as the music that fills this album suggests, it's a perfect pairing. Sunn O)))'s Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley had originally reached out to Walker about contributing to their 2009 album Monoliths and Dimensions but were unable to coordinate. Walker subsequently contacted about contributing drones to fill in the silence between his lyrics while working on his epic 2012 release Bish Bosch. Evidently, Sunn O))) brought their full stage equipment to Walker's studio for recording. If you are unfamiliar, it's a wall of Ampeg, Marshall, and HiWatt speakers with Ampeg SVT and Sunn Model T heads. Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass [56:06] "The Girl from Ipanema" South of the Border A&M SP-108 1964 South of the border, down Rio de Janiero way. Music behind the DJ: "If I Fell" by Perry Botkin Jr and his Orchestra

As an anthem to angst, George and Ira Gershwin's bittersweet counter-love song “But Not For Me” was well ahead of its time. The brothers penned the song in 1930 for the stage musical “Girl Crazy,” in which it was premiered by Ginger Rogers, who was appearing in the role that led to her film career. Since then, the tune has been recorded many times, though many leading vocalists like Tony Bennett don't seem to have ever given it a try, even though it is, as musician Jed Scott notes, “It's a gem of a song, and a welcome change from the AABA song form.”Waiting for JazzThe number initially failed to achieve significant pop success, charting only once. And that was a dozen years after its composition, when Harry James and His Orchestra brought it out with vocalist Helen Forrest. However, a decade after that, the song had a rebirth in the jazz world, which appreciated its kinky chord changes. As Scott noted in an online post, instead of the usual AABA of most pop standards, this 32-bar Gershwin melody is ABAB.Best of all, that second B section “has a brilliant compositional moment,” Scott observes. “In the first B, it leaps upwards to the tonic, but in the second it leaps a step higher, before climbing back down to the low tonic over the next four measures.”The result, says Scott, is “unexpected, beautiful and typical of Gershwin's clever compositional approach.”The Cool KidsThe world of 1950s cool jazz loved those leaps. A particularly beautiful understated rendering was done in 1956 by a 26-year-old superstar of the day. Trumpeter Chet Baker made it a centerpiece on his Chet Baker Sings album, achieving a perfect balance between George's upbeat melody and Ira's darker lyric.Other ‘50s jazz vocals of the tune included great ones by Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughn. Meanwhile, instrumental versions were released in the same decade by Miles Davis, Buddy De Franco, the Modern Jazz Quarter, Kenny Burrell, Ahmad Jamal and Red Garland.Since then the song has been recorded by various crooners, from Harry Connick Jr. and Barry Manilow to Linda Ronstadt and Diana Krall.Movie Time“But Not for Me” has made occasional cameo appearances in movies too, starting out as the title tune for a 1959 Clark Gable-Carroll Baker comedy. After that, Woody Allen added it to his 1979 Manhattan, a Jackie Gleason arrangement made it into L.A. Confidential in the same year, and 15 years later, Elton John performed it in Four Weddings and a Funeral. Our Take on the TuneLast week was The Flood's first fling with the tune. See what you think. We also expect to have the song in the repertoire for our big New Year's Eve do at Huntington's beloved Alchemy Theatre. Hope you've got us on your calendar. Ahmad's Blues 2. Love for Sale 3. Autumm Leaves 4. Poinciana *Suscríbete a nuestro canal. William "Red" Garland leads this classic quintet tonight on The Jazz Show's Jazz Feature. In the Fall of 1957 Red had some time off as Miles Davis' regular pianist because Miles was on a tour of Europe and involved in making the soundtrack from the French noir film "Elevator to the Scaffold". Red secured some gigs in and around New York with this band which included tenor giant John Coltrane, trumpeter Donald Byrd, drum ace Arthur Taylor and a newcomer on bass from Memphis named George Joyner who soon later became Jamil Nasser. The band gelled instantly with minimal arrangements and fuss and sounded like a long standing working band. Red was contacted by Prestige Records and the band did two marathon recording sessions. One in November and the other in December of 1957. The results from these sessions were issued on a variety of Lps and later Cds as was Prestige's policy. The three extended tunes come from an album called "All Mornin' Long". It came from the first session on Nov.15,1957. The playing is on an extremely high level and demonstrates you can make high quality music with the minimum of complex arrangements and such from these five master players. "All Mornin' Long" is tonight's Jazz feature....sit back and enjoy!

When I told my good buddy in Maine that I was preparing to do a Badass Records Podcast episode with Adam Wilke, he asked me to let him know when it dropped as he'd always considered today's guest as something of an "exotic mystery," and when I heard that, I thought he'd nailed it. Or at least I could see how someone who'd only met him once would say that. Now, though...things're different. Now, I've had Adam Wilke in the chair, and -- I gotta tell ya' -- I consider myself a lucky dude for having had this opportunity.I've always wondered if and when jazz would work its way into my life, and were it to, would it stay. I still swim around in that same lake of curiosity, but I feel closer to it now. Its depths seem less unknown, its waters once murkier. I feel compelled to depart from the single-Sonos-in-the-kitchen situation, to return to the exploration of a household sound system. The notion of filling multiple rooms with jazz rattles around in my brain, suggests the added perk of education.Anyway, Episode #33 -- or as I like to call it, The Zdeno Chara episode -- was really fun.Adam's had a fascinating go of things, and once you've had a listen, I think you'll agree: We gotta get this guy giggin' again! But before I get ahead of myself, it's important to own the fuck-ups, first. Long story short, a camera crapped out on me (again), and I skipped one of my guest's records (again). And I had to figure out a way to be okay with it so that the show could -- as they say -- go on. So, that's what I'm doing.I hope I've figured out a way to avoid SD cards frying out on me for now, and I need to be a little more careful with my preparation approach, but even if I iron out those wrinkles, I'm certain to make errors in other ways down the road. It's an imperfect thing, this process, when you're the one doing it all. And none of those goofs or gaffes make the thing any less fun or cool (to me), so...gotta roll with it.Adam and I examined the following records, though:Ellington at Newport (1956)Monk Plays Ellington (1956)Full House (1962) by Wes MontgomeryGrant Green's Idle Moments (1965)Sinatra at the Sands featuring The Count Basie Orchestra (1966)Miles by the Miles Davis Quintet (1956)Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet (1957)Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet (1958)Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet (1960)Miles Smiles, the Miles Davis Quintet (1967)B.B. King's Live at the Regal (1965) was part of the gig, too, but I accidentally overlooked it in transferring Adam's list from one place to another to another. I'm checkin' it out now, though, and you should, too. He also said he'd been into anything by Charlie Parker, Red Garland, McCoy Tyner, and Tito Puente, so I dug in to Jam Session (1952), Feelin' Red (1979), The Real McCoy (1967), and 1957's Night Beat, respectively, so that we could chew the fat on those cats for a second or two. This was such good fun, though. I hope you find it enjoyable, too. If you'd like to join for an episode or you know someone that'd be a good fit, please reach out via comment, e-mail, D.M., text, phone call. Whatever works. Whether you acknowledge it or not, the world deserves to hear your story. And theirs, too.Thank you.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the intro/outro audio. They are samples from a tune called, "The Browns at Home" by The Greyboy Allstars from their 1994 record called West Coast Boogaloo (c/o Knowledge Room Recordings).

This pivotal album was really the first of Coltrane's great recordings and the beginning of his ascent. This recording done in August of 1957 while Coltrane was part of Thelonious Monk's great quartet show his immense improvement over his recordings in 1956. Coltrane had settled his demons (alcohol and drugs) and had been inspired by Monk to practice and improve what he started out to be. Coltrane by this recording had become a major influence and along with Sonny Rollins, the most important voice of the tenor saxophone. Here he is with a perfect rhythm section with Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and the always swinging Arthur Taylor on drums. The true beginning of Coltrane's greatness right here.
