For this episode, we invited philosopher Yuan Yuan and Lokin to join us in over-interpreting Paul Thomas Anderson's chewy new film One Battle After Another. It's a movie that some of us walked into with doubts and walked out of utterly charmed, while others find it to be a thoroughly “meh” bundle of clichés. Starting from Camus's The Rebel, we dig into the ethical dilemmas of revolutionary violence: when “womanly compassion” becomes a crime, does fervor for an abstract ideal inevitably demand the sacrifice of concrete human lives? Is Perfidia a boundary-pushing anti-hero who defies our moral expectations, or a complex woman trapped within male gaze and stereotype? And if Perfidia's spectacle-driven, pleasure-forward revolution is one end of the spectrum, is its opposite the Sensei style—an everyday heroism grounded in neighborly mutual aid? 00:00 Quick plot recap of One Battle After Another and our initial reactions 10:23 Why does transplanting 1960s revolutionary aesthetics into 2008 feel so unconvincing? 22:34 Moral reasoning around violent revolution: do the film's actions satisfy “just cause,” “necessity,” and “proportionality”? 31:33 Perfidia: sexualized or anti-hero? 54:12 Does Willa break the cycle of her parents' trauma? 58:03 The “non-profit coyote” Sensei and the quiet heroism of the everyday 67:07 A sharp satire of white supremacism 78:47 The ending: …so this counts as a happy ending? The Links】 Liberalism in Dark Times: The Liberal Ethos in the Twentieth Century The Rebel: An Essay on Man in Revolt Vineland 【买咖啡 Please Support Us】 如果喜欢这期节目并愿意想要给我们买杯咖啡: 海外用户:https://www.patreon.com/cyberpinkfm 海内用户:https://afdian.com/a/cyberpinkfm 商务合作邮箱:cyberpinkfm@gmail.com 商务合作微信:CyberPink2022 If you like our show and want to support us, please consider the following: Those Abroad: https://www.patreon.com/cyberpinkfm Those in China: https://afdian.com/a/cyberpinkfm Business Inquiries Email: cyberpinkfm@gmail.com Business Inquiries WeChat: CyberPink2022
Whether it's Venezuela or Ukraine, Lefties and their TDS brethren default to racism or Trump/Russia. The fabulous Rachel Maddow epitomizes the pseudo intellectual veneer that props up their misleading narrative.

In One Battle After Another, Teyana Taylor delivers a raw, commanding performance as Perfidia, a woman fighting to hold her life together while the world keeps throwing punches. Taylor channels her signature intensity into a character who is both fierce and deeply vulnerable someone navigating personal trauma, fractured relationships, and the quiet battles no one sees. Will, Jared, & Kourtney (!) sit down to discuss one of the hottest and most controversial films of the year, Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another.Does legendary auteur PTA deliver another ingenious adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel, or is this movie too radical for its own good? Do the hosts, inspired by the film, regret drinking Modelo during the podcast? Are the portrayals of people of color in this film offensive, and how uncomfortable are our hosts in even discussing that topic? Send us a textWelcome back to DMR!One Battle After Another is a 2025 action-thriller directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio as Bob, a former revolutionary leader trying to live a quiet life off the grid with his daughter, Willa, played by Chase Infiniti. Their peace is shattered when Willa disappears, pulling Bob back into a world he thought he'd left behind. Teyana Taylor plays Perfidia, a figure from Bob's past whose allegiances are uncertain, while Sean Penn portrays Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw, an old adversary with unfinished business. The film also features Benicio del Toro and Regina Hall in pivotal supporting roles. With its grounded performances and politically charged storyline, the film blends personal stakes with broader themes of loyalty, consequence, and resistance. Paul Thomas Anderson brings his signature style to the project—blending suspense, emotional weight, and rich character dynamics—which may draw critical attention. While it certainly has the hallmarks of a high-caliber drama, One Battle After Another seems more focused on telling a tight, character-driven story than chasing awards. That said, with the talent involved, it wouldn't be surprising if it ends up in the conversation during awards season.Reminder to grab your 30 day free trial with Audible and help support DMR in the process, link in the show!Support the showThe audio clips used in this podcast, including excerpts from movie/series/documentary trailers, are used under the principles of fair use and fair dealing for the purpose of criticism, commentary, and review. Send us a textWelcome to the launch of our epic 5th season on Fabulous Film & Friends! This is the big one! The one that everyone will be talking about for years to come. Why? Because this is the episode where I finally get to trash the Barbie movie as we dive into the idea of “When Good Directors Go Bad.”Inspired by the recent release of 2025's Paul Thomas Anderson/ Leonardo DiCaprio domestic terror extravaganza One Battle After Another which also stars Benicio Del Toro, Teyana Taylor, Chase Infiniti, Regina Hall, Tony Goldwyn, Alana Haim and Sean Penn, we're going to analyze just went wrong with this promising cinematic spectacle and compare it to another creative disaster that should've been an artistic and thematic slam dunk considering its pedigree, 2023's Barbie directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Simu Liu, Rhea Perlman and Will Ferrell. I'm your host Gino Caputi and returning to their mics pretty much right where they left them last season are little sis' Roseanne Caputi and actor photobug Gordon Alex Robertson. Alex, you're going to start this season out of the hot seat again as Roseanne is going to continue to thrill us with factoids about the directors in question Hit us again with the facts, Teach! Before we sharpen the bayonets and light the fuses: the synopses. Barbie follows the titular blonde doll as she awakes blissfully in the female run Barbie Land each day, ignoring her supposed boyfriend Ken, and partying with her fellow Barbies all night. One night during a sensationally choreographed and costumed dance party, she has an existential crisis about mortality and develops flat feet, causing her to leave Barbieland on a journey to “the real world” to find the source of her angst. Realizing her depressed feelings stem from a psychic connection to her original owner, Gloria, Barbie reconnects with Gloria and Gloria's daughter and the trio travel back to Barbieland. Upon their return, however, they are dumbfounded to find that Ken has taken over and has brainwashed all the other Barbies into subservience to him and his fellow Kens. A battle of the sexes ensues. One Battle After Another loosely adapts Vineland, a novel by Thomas Pynchon. It follows Bob Ferguson, a bomb expert drawn into the terrorist group the French 75. Amid the group's revolutionary chaos, Bob fathers a daughter named Willa with the fiery tempered and uncontrollable Perfidia Beverly Hills. Perfidia also has a complicated relationship with the mannered and single-minded Colonel Steven Lockjaw. She is soon caught during a botched bank robbery, and Lockjaw strikes a deal with her, leading her to name names. Years later, after most of his French 75 cohorts have been hunted down by Lockjaw, Bob is still on the run in Northern California with Willa. But Lockjaw finds and captures Willa so Bob must confront the unstoppable colonel for once and for all. Where did these two talented filmmakers go off the rails? Find out! Kenny and Mike discuss and spot faith elements reflected in Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film One Battle after Another. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as "Ghetto" Pat Calhoun, once a leader of the famous revolutionary group, the "French 75." Following the capture of his partner Perfidia Beverly Hills (Teyana Taylor) and the capture and killing of many of the group by Col. Stephen Lockjaw (Sean Penn) Calhoun lives an underground life as Bob Ferguson raising his and Perfidia's daughter Willa (Chase Infiniti). When Lockjaw, trying to cover his tracks in order to join a secret society of white supremists, The Christmas Adventurers Club, captures Willa, Ferguson is pressed into action with little time to shake of the rust of 15 years of drugs, alcohol and little activity. Benicio del Toro costars as Sergio St. Carolos, Willa's Karate intstructor and leader of the local undocumented community. Sergio assists Bob in finding his daughter while also helping many of the community escape from the military crackdown. Faith Spotted: Co-opting and nationalizing faith for personal power and profit. The perseverance necessary to stand against injustice, seek to redeem and reclaim justice and the way of Christ and the Kingdom of God. The challenge and call to maintain faith and focus when encountering the enevitable, "gravitational force" of resistance of those who oppose the righteousness of God and Gospel of Christ. Resist the temptations to allow diappointment and struggle change one into that which one is called to oppose. Resist the temptation to believe that unrighteous means will lead to a righteous end.
Teyana Taylor can do it all: she's a singer, songwriter, actress, model, dancer, choreographer, and director and in this episode of ‘Reign' Teyana proves she is an incredible philosopher too, because WOW the amount of great advice she shares in this episode is off the charts! Teyana first came to our attention in the MTV show, ‘Super Sweet 16.' Her reality TV stints led to her choreographing for Beyonce and launching a music career with huge hits like ‘Gonna Love Me'. All before she announced she would retire from music to pursue acting. Plot spoiler - in case you don't know already - after a five hiatus Teyana returned to music this year with her new album, ‘Escape Room'. After securing roles in ‘A Thousand and One' and ‘Coming to America 2', Teyana is now getting deserved Oscar buzz for starring alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn in Paul Thomas Anderson's ‘One Battle After Another' which is out in cinemas from 26th September. Teyana plays revolutionary Perfidia, part of the French 75 revolutionary movement fighting against right wing politics. It's certainly a timely movie which raises questions around migrants, racism and white supremacy and it's truly one of the best movies of the year which will hopefully get us all talking. Teyana joins me for a deep chat, which shows a whole other side of her, as she talks about everything from the power of patience to operating in survival mode. Get your notepad and pen out whilst listening to this episode because there are so many quotes you need to live by! If you love listening to Teyana as much as I did, get in touch, as I always love chatting to you and you can find me @joshsmithhosts across socials. Love, Josh x P.S. El segundo álbum es “Rock out with… Playlist;(sintonía) THE VENTURES “Introduction” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “The cruel sea (The Cruel Surf)” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “Penetration” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “Bulldog” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “I feel fine” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “The house of the rising sun” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “Out of limits” (Live in Japan’65”)THE VENTURES “Slaughter on 10th avenue” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “Besame mucho twist” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “Medley; Walk don’t run – Lullaby of the leaves - Perfidia” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “Driving guitars (Ventures twist)” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “Surf rider” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “Journey to the stars” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “Diamond head” (Live in Japan’65)DICK DALE “Peter Gunn” (Live At Ciro's)DICK DALE “Angry generation” (Live At Ciro's)DICK DALE “Summertime blues” (Live At Ciro's)DICK DALE “Blowin’ in the wind” (Live At Ciro's)DICK DALE “Don’t stop now” (Live At Ciro's)DICK DALE “Let’s go trippin’65” (Live At Ciro's)DICK DALE “What’d I say” (Live At Ciro's)Escuchar audio

In "Perfidia," author James Ellroy writes a historical novel and the first volume of his second L.A. Quartet series, set in Los Angeles in 1941 that follows the story of several very different people who come together to investigate the murder of a Japanese family as America is at the brink of World War II. This discussion with the author took place on a 2014 episode of "Conversations On The Coast with Jim Foster" originating in San Francisco, California. Photo: jamesellroy.net

It just came down to me. Like the letter at the beginning of Forrest Gump. Like the chap who rescued Mary and me six years ago when we blew a tire in the most remote "track" to be found in all of England. It just came down to me: I realized that the rockabilly-surfing band Los Straitjackets had something to teach me that had been camouflaged for years. FYI Los Straitjackets are a Nashville-based instrumental rock band that specialize in somewhat weird yet most accomplished covers of mostly ancient rock 'n roll hits from the USA and Mexico. Songs like "Itsy Bitsy Yellow Polka Dot Bikini", "Telstar", "Perfidia" and basically anything by Duane Eddy. The band has changed personnel some over the years, but not too much. Dave Zahl and I got to see them live in 2015. But quite seriously, Los Straitjackets specialize in a structure or form of most of their songs that majors on the last third of what they play. It's odd. They play two verses of a somewhat conventional sounding dinosaur hit from the surfing/sci fi/rockabilly past; but then, in the third verse, the band goes crazy. Another way of saying it might be this: the band ascends near the end to St. Paul's seventh heaven -- or at least something like that. You'll hear it. Always wait for the third verse. It's never ever over 'til it's over. This cast is heavy on the music. To me their sound is in a class by itself. To me it gives hope for... the last third of life. To me it's an actual musical exposition of my Handbook for Boomers (Mockingbird 2020). "Go now, therefore, and make all men... disciples of Los ..." LUV U.

16/12/2022 --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/vito-rodolfo-albano7/message

El segundo álbum es “Rock out with… THE ORIGIN OF THIS MUSIC:Created by Gibbs Williams It is hard to believe it has been decades since I graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School. It is even harder to believe that I received an invitation to attend the 65th reunion. Unfortunately, with the covid pandemic still in the air, although vaccinated, I thought it prudent better to pass up this event hoping conditions fare more salutary for the 70th. Although disappointed I would miss the reunion I was struck by a wave of pleasurable nostalgia. Recalling those the best of those glorious days I remember the feelings of the cool Miami Beach breezes enveloping us on our weekly Friday night dances in the patio of our high school. All who attended seemed hypnotized with feelings of a pervasive feeling of at-one-ment in which we collectively bathed in what was then and even now experienced as our own unique mixture of heroin- like- atmosphere. This natural high was experienced by many of us as nothing short of pure unadulterated nostalgia. Nostalgia then and now was like our living in a collective commune protecting us from what probably would have been experienced as overwhelming normal adolescent pain if we had been open to feeling it. I was especially nostalgic remembering my self and four other guys daring to form a small combo good enough to play at all of the school dances. We even played well enough that every New Years Eve a Miami Beach Hotel hired us to perform. Our Small combo consisted of Drums (Marvin Guccion), Bass (John Schaffer), Trombone (Peter Weill), Trumpet (Kenny Kupper) and Piano (Gibbs Williams). Unknowingly we had no knowledge that we were on the cutting edge of what would soon be an explosion of worldwide bands. In is in this memorable context that I wish to share an album of some of those unforgettable songs which best seem to celebrate the richness not only of those glorious days from the 9th to the 12th grade, but all the years that have too quickly passed - as well as the years that are yet to come. It is unfortunate that we never recorded our iconic sounds. The best I can offer with the goal in mind of capturing the sounds we made are my original arrangements made on my Yamaha synthesizer. The songs we played were standards from the forties and fifties. I have titled this compilation Nostalgia. "NOSTALGIA" - 65 th REUNION - MIAMI BEACH HIGH SCHOOL - CLASS of 55 Moon Over Miami , Ebb Tide, Star Dust, It Might As Well Be Spring, Teguilla, The Hucklebuck, Five Foot Two, Somewhere Along the Way, Im In The Mood For Love, Again, Blue Moon, Miami Beach Rhumba, Because of You, Rock Around the Clock, Down By The Riverside, Tammy's In Love, Where Is Your Heart, Don't Blame Me, If I Loved You, I'll Take Manhattan, The Man I Love, A Secret Love, Autumn Leaves, Summer Time, Mona LIsa, Take the A Train,Perfidia, It's No Sin, It Had To Be You, For Me And My Gal, Thrill Me, You're Just In Love, Yellow Bird, Canadian Sunset, A Taste Of Honey, Too Young, Saint Louis Blues, My Foolish Heart, You Belong To Me, Sleepy Time Gal, Body and Soul, The Nearness Of You, Misty, Sweet Georgia Brown, Blue Skies, Tenderly, Some Enchanted Evening, Bali High, Bewitched, Once Upon A Time, As Time Time Goes By, Aways, Fight Song Of The Miami Beach Hight Marching Band A and B. I know all was not perfect then as we were all struggling to survive adolescence so those days were hardly always serene. Yet, there was, and still is for me and I imagine for many of my class mates, a certain undeniable 'specialness' about our class which for many of us still acts like a permanent magnet pulling us back again and again to re-unite. As for me, if we had been recognized as ground-breaking I am certain our lives at least vocationally would have taken a much different route. However, I can honestly say that I am happy to being a still practicing psychoanalyst in New York City - a happily married husband and father having started our own dynasty of four grandchildren.
When the New York Times book critic Dennis Lehane writes about the opening of James Ellroy's novel, “Perfidia” he states. “There — Whalen's Drugstore, Sixth and Spring Streets. The site of four recent felonies. 211 PC — Armed Robbery.” For better and often for worse, that style — jumpy, feverish and anarchic — mirrors the world we enter.” So too does our opening track reflect this jumpy, feverish and anarchic feeling. Composed and arranged by today's guest, a musician who has performed and recorded with many world class musicians including Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Henderson, The Temptations, 10,000 Maniacs, The Four Tops and many others. My guest is a saxophonist, composer, arranger and educator as well as the founder, artistic director and conductor of the Rockland Youth Jazz Ensemble, an adjunct jazz professor at Bergen Community College, Bergen Catholic High School's Jazz Ensemble director and vice-president of the Rockland County Jazz and Blues Society. In 2019 he was the recipient of the Arts Council of Rockland's 2019 Performing Artist Award. It is my honor to introduce today's guest, the leader of The Peter Furlan Project and The Peter Furlan Trio & Quintet, Peter Furlan.

Perfidia (Knopf) Please welcome back to Skylight one of L.A.'s most iconic crime writers, James Ellroy! The Japanese have bombed Pearl Harbor. The United States teeters on the edge of war. The roundup of allegedly treasonous Japanese Americans is about to begin. And in L.A., a Japanese family is found dead. Murder or ritual suicide? The investigation will draw four people into a totally Ellroy-ian tangle: a brilliant Japanese American forensic chemist; an unsatisfiably adventurous young woman; one police officer based in fact (William H. "Whiskey Bill" Parker, later to become the groundbreaking chief of the LAPD), the other the product of Ellroy's inimitable imagination (Dudley Smith, arch villain of "The Big Nowhere, L.A. Confidential, White Jazz)." As their lives intertwine, we are given a story of war and of consuming romance, a searing expose of the Japanese internment, and an astonishingly detailed homicide investigation. In "Perfidia," Ellroy delves more deeply than ever before into his characters' intellectual and emotional lives. But it has the full-strength, unbridled story-telling audacity that has marked all the acclaimed work of the "Demon Dog of American Crime Fiction." Praise for Perfidia "Perfidia is a brilliant, breakneck ride. Nobody except James Ellroy could pull this off. He doesn't merely write--he ignites and demolishes." --Carl Hiaasen "A return to the scene of Ellroy's greatest success and a triumphant return to form. . . . His character portrayals have never been more nuanced or--dare we say it--sympathetic. . . . A disturbing, unforgettable, and inflammatory vision of how the men in charge respond to the threat of war. It's an ugly picture, but just try looking away." --"Booklist", starred review "A sprawling, uncompromising epic of crime and depravity." --"Publishers Weekly" James Ellroy was born in Los Angeles in 1948. He is the author of the Underworld U.S.A. Trilogy-American Tabloid, The Cold Six Thousand, and Blood's a Rover-and the L. A. Quartet novels, The Black Dahlia, The Big Nowhere, L. A. Confidential, and White Jazz. He lives in Los Angeles.
