Can you believe the most celebrated Bill Evans Trio was only together for 18 months? In this episode, we're looking at early 60's Bill alongside Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian, and the four albums they recorded together before LaFaro's tragic death at just 25 years old. From Portrait in Jazz and its cross-over with Miles Davis' Kind of Blue through Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debbie – recorded live on the same day in June 1961. We break down their conversational approach to jazz standards like “Autumn Leaves,” geek out over Bill Evans music theory, and explore his distinct voicings and voice leading techniques. Whether you're a mid-century jazz aficionado or just looking for the perfect “sweater weather trio songs to somberly study to,” we've got just the playlist for you.ABOUT OPEN STUDIO------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------As the premier online jazz education platform, with an ever-expanding course library and 20,000+ members, Open Studio (OS) has everything you need to excel and thrive on your jazz journey.Featuring everything from beginner to advanced lessons, engaging courses from A-list instructors, step-by-step curriculum, real-time classes and a thriving and incredibly supportive community, OS is the perfect platform to level up your jazz playing, whether you're a total beginner, or an advanced pro-level improvisor.Try OS Membership today! → https://osjazz.link/aboutAll about YHIhttps://lnk.to/youllhearitYB

Jorge Molder, Lisboa, 1947. Summary Brian Bromberg, a virtuoso bassist, honors the legacy of Scott LaFaro with his latest album, LaFaro, and a series of live performances. LaFaro, who tragically died at 25, was a groundbreaking bassist with the Bill Evans Trio, inspiring Bromberg's tribute. Initially reluctant to take on the project due to the pressures of honoring a jazz legend, Bromberg eventually embraced it after realizing LaFaro's profound influence on his playing. Bromberg also shares personal connections to jazz greats like Stan Getz, with whom he played, and Bill Evans, a missed opportunity from his youth. His career spans collaborations with top artists and an eclectic solo catalog ranging from traditional jazz to contemporary styles. Known for his versatility on upright and electric bass, Bromberg defies genre boundaries, seeking to deliver heartfelt, high-quality musicianship in every project. His performances and music continue to celebrate innovation and jazz's rich history. https://njjs.org/magazine/

A Noise From The Deep: Greenleaf Music Podcast with Dave Douglas
Reading Joe's memoir about his time in the Bill Evans Trio is absolutely revelatory. On this episode, … The post ANFTD #114: Joe LaBarbera first appeared on Greenleaf Music by Dave Douglas.
When we discuss the Bill Evans Trio - different trios pop in people's minds. They all have merit, but there was definitely an evolution there. In this episode, we are taking a special spotlight on the evolution of the Bill Evans Trio.
Joe LaBarbera has spent his life in jazz, first based in New York, then in LA, and has performed with Bill Evans, Tony Bennet, Chuck Mangione, and many more. He also spent 28 years on the faculty at Cal Arts teaching drumset, jazz small groups, and jazz history. His new book, Times Remembered, recounts his time with the Bill Evans Trio during the last two years of Evans' life. In this episode, Joe talks about: His motivation for writing a book about his time with Bill Evans The musical and personal dynamic he had with Bill during their time together Going from playing with Bill Evans, a very heavy jazz gig, to Tony Bennett, which he doesn't consider to be a jazz gig The overarching concept he drew from Bill - commitment How he viewed his role as a mentor to many different types of students during his 28 years at Cal Arts

On this episode, Kirk dives in to one of the most influential jazz recordings of all time. (For real this time.) As the lead track on Miles Davis's landmark album Kind of Blue, "So What" signaled a new era in jazz harmony, composition, and improvisation. This episode will get into what that actually means, how the tune works, and why the seven musicians who played on Kind of Blue were each such a crucial part of the album's magic. The Bill Evans Trio live at the Village Vanguard is considered a classic but we consider it terrible mainly because of bassist Scott La Faro.

In the latest edition of Jazz Beat, Tom Reney explores the legacy of the bassist Scott LaFaro, who was a leading innovator in modern jazz and a member of the Bill Evans Trio. LaFaro was tragically killed in an auto accident in 1961 at age 25, and he’s the subject of an outstanding biography by his sister Helene LaFaro-Fernandez. Tom’s appreciation of LaFaro includes numerous samples of his music.
One of the most versatile exponents of the latest cadre of young jazz musicians to emerge in the post-“Young Lions” era, saxophonist, Ray Zepeda, differentiates himself not only by his diverse musical background but also by his life story – a sojourn that began in the shadows of oil wells and derricks in Taft, California, followed by his formative musical development in the beach cities of Los Angeles’s South Bay which led to a 5-year stint in the Boston area where he greatly broadened his musical perspective and started composing, only to return to the South Bay to establish himself in the Los Angeles jazz scene – a life that has not only encompassed alternating periods of focus on “classical” composition, jazz, and popular music, but also various professional pursuits which have included jobs such s a music educator and a successful project management career in the oil & gas industry. The economics of jazz notwithstanding, rest assured that Ray Zepeda has lived the jazz way, improvising a life, as it were, - exploiting every opening, pulling on every thread no matter how tenuous or impossibly thin, and approaching life with a humility that has allowed others to shine and benefit from his gifts – and, undeterred by numerous vicissitudes, has achieved his highest level of success during this, the most severe economic turndown in memory. This is not as much an artist’s story as it is a uniquely American one. His debut CD, “Step By Step”, features Bill Evans Trio drummer, Joe La Barbera; first-call bassist, Darek Oles; and legendary L.A. pianist/composer, Rich Eames. With eight smoking, thought-provoking tracks beautifully mastered by Bernie Grundman, it was the top seller at the Bakersfield Jazz Festival which featured a lineup of internationally-known artists and enjoyed substantial radio airplay in major markets nationwide and abroad and marked movement on the jazz charts. He recently founded the Bakersfield New Music Collective which will perform two pieces on his second CD, “America”, to be released in 2016. A veteran of the Los Angeles jazz, reggae, punk, pop, and house DJ scene, Zepeda has performed/recorded with Lou Rawls, Russ Ferrante (Yellowjackets), John Patitucci (Chick Corea), Joe La Barbera (Bill Evans Trio), Barbara Morrison, Thelma Jones, Carl Saunders (Stan Kenton/ Bill Holman), Dave Tull (Chuck Mangione/ Michael Buble), Lanny Morgan (Supersax/ Natalie Cole), Johnny Blas (CuBop Records), and many others. Since beginning his professional career playing lead alto in various big bands at the age of 15, his musical palette has expanded to include everything from serious composition to avant-garde jazz to contemporary pop to punk rock. Mr. Zepeda holds the Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of Southern California where he studied with saxophonist, Bob Sheppard (Steely Dan, Chick Corea, Mike Stern), and the Bachelor of Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he studied Composition with Pulitzer Prize and MacArthur Grant-winning composer, John Harbison. http://rayzepeda.com/

Dr. Vernick explores the career of jazz bassist Scott LaFaro who is known for revolutionizing the role of his instrument. In the year 1960, LaFaro's playing received wide acclaim on the unconventional version of jazz standard Autumn Leaves which he covered with the Bill Evans Trio. It was in this year that he also contributed to Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz album which, for better or worse, would greatly influence the course of jazz history.
Dr. Vernick explores the career of jazz bassist Scott LaFaro who is known for revolutionizing the role of his instrument. The first segment is devoted to his early work prior to joining the Bill Evans Trio and becoming a young star of the jazz scene.
Dr. Vernick explores the career of jazz bassist Scott LaFaro who is known for revolutionizing the role of his instrument. The 4th and final segment documents the engagement that he played with the Bill Evans Trio at the Village Vanguard within two weeks of his untimely death in a car accident. Rather than showcase LaFaro's individual performance, Gordon emphasizes the musical interaction that occues between the group as a whole since he feels that is what made this night particularly notable and memorable.
This edition of the Bill Evans Trio is very special as it features his favourite drummer Philly Joe Jones, who was a part of Bill's working trio for a short time in 1967. Evans was usually introspective and romantic but Philly Joe brought out Bill's more outgoing characteristics and we hear a swinging, burning and happy Bill Evans on these tracks recorded in August of 1967 at New York's Village Vanguard. Anchoring the trio is the strong and virtuoso bassist Eddie Gomez. "California, Here I Come" was a very welcome re-issue from Verve in 2004 as it contains some prime Evans at his outgoing best.
