THE CONSUMMATE SHOWMAN, JOHNNY PETILLO VETERAN OF STAGE AND SONG JOHNNY PETILLO   New Jersey has long had a reputation for putting out some of the most impressive lounge singers known in the world and holds its claim to fame with Frank Sinatra.  Originally a Jersey boy out of Hoboken, Sinatra went on to become one of the most well-known members of the Rat Pack.  Jersey hasn't stopped producing legends, however, and Johnny Petillo is a proud member of the ranks of Doo Wop and Rat Pack shows to come out of New Jersey in the years that followed.  If you enjoy the tonal qualities of doo-wop favorites mixed with a splash of comedy, Johnny Petillo should be on your list. Google Photos Johnny has a long-standing passion for music, standing on the street corners of Asbury Park belting out his soulful tones to captivated audiences.  When he first got his start he may have only been locally famous, but as his notoriety grew he eventually found his way onto the European charts with his hit record “Kiss Me Quick.”  He would soon get to go to Europe and tour the countries there, as well as the United States, with the band Danny and the Juniors.  World fame was essentially guaranteed for this talented boy from Jersey. Google Photos The years to follow would show Johnny refining his craft even further, and he served for some time as lead singer with The Duprees.  It was on the back of his voice that the group went on to have such incredible singles as “Have you heard” and “You Belong To Me”, two songs that would make them famous.  Like most of his contemporaries, Johnny Petillo was a rolling stone, and his career wouldn't stand still. Google Photos Due to the quality of his performances, Johnny Petillo was afforded one of the biggest honors an artist of his time could receive, he was invited to appear on The Tonight Show, as well as Late Night with David Letterman.  An invitation to the White House didn't hold the same prestige as sharing a few minutes in the limelight with these late night talk-show celebrities. Google Photos Johnny's successful career hasn't led him to forget the days where he was still reaching out to his audience in small venues and comedy clubs.  He still tours these locations to this very day and can be seen performing in locations that range from smokey lounge bars to Madison Square Garden. Google Photos His suite of talents is broad, allowing him to advertise himself as “Johnny Petillo's Doo Wop & Rat Pack One Man Show”, and those who recruit his services are in for an absolute delight.  Johnny's talent includes a soulful voice that he uses to perform original pieces, as well as doing impressions of some of the most talented Rat Pack members from history.  What's a night of good music with a few laughs?  A great night out, which is why Johnny brings his talents as a comedian to the table to brighten up an evening of powerful, nostalgic music.

Rerun: Kanye West was ejected from Radio City Music Hall at the MTV VMAs on 13th September, 2009, after drunkenly interrupting Taylor Swift's acceptance speech for Best Female Video. Distraught that the country star's ‘You Belong To Me' video has beaten Beyonce's ‘Single Ladies' to the trophy, he memorably proclaimed: “Yo Taylor, I'm really happy for you, I'mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!” In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly examine whether this viral moment was ultimately harmful or beneficial to both stars' careers; highlight how the fracas accelerated Twitter's adoption by the mainstream media; and ask whether - after all these years - Kanye was right… Further Reading: • ‘How the Taylor Swift-Kanye West VMAs scandal became a perfect American morality tale' (Vox, 2019): https://www.vox.com/culture/2019/8/26/20828559/taylor-swift-kanye-west-2009-mtv-vmas-explained • ‘2009 VMAs Oral History: What You Didn't See When Kanye West Rushed the Stage on Taylor Swift' (Billboard, 2009): https://www.billboard.com/articles/news/television/8523549/2009-mtv-vmas-oral-history • Artisan News Service reports on the event in 2009: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1z8gCZ7zpsQ ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' Today's Topic: the costs of studying in the US主播:David | 翩翩音乐:You Belong To Me粉丝留言说,想了解在美国读大学的一些详细的情况,我们就做了一个系列节目,把费用、上课、活动、社团等等各种“在美国读大学”的一些情况,给大家详细讲清楚。 A lot of schools run on the semester system.*quarter /ˈkwɔ:rtər/ n. 学期 ● 学费金额公立私立也不一样,that depends on the school。 In-state tuition是一种优惠政策,it is a lower cost for people who are from the state,指的是本州的居民,可以拿相对来说比较低的学费上学。 02. Housing食宿费(包括住、吃、保险、杂费) ● The cost of housing食宿费The average housing cost:$15,000 per year一年平均15,000美元(约10万人民币) ● Health insurance and school supplies保险,学校用品开支差不多是$2000-3000 per year,每年2000-3000美元(约1.2万-1.8万人民币)。 ● Daily life cost生活费生活费最主要分两块儿:social life(社交)和transportation(交通出行)。social life主要包括:go out with your friends to eat和朋友出去吃饭watch a game看比赛go to a concert看演唱会transportation 主要是指:getting around in a car or bus打车或者坐公交的费用。 当然,it depends on where you go,朋友们还会split the bills,AA制。 有了这个season pass,这一整年,你就可以去all the big football or basketball games。 3) Foodis covered by housing. UCLA,the food is one of the best traits,饮食是一大特色,可以说全美都数得上。 如果你move off campus(在校外住的话),就不需要付housing cost,但是,你要pay for rent and your own food,付房租,自己买食物。 03. Financial Aid & Scholarships & Other Ways to Earn Money 奖学金 ,助学金及其他资金补贴的方式在美国读大学是一笔不小的开销,所以美国的大学会提供一些资金上的支持,主要是通过两种方式:1) financial aid助学金:大约是平均$14,000 per year,it depends on how much your family has,主要是看家庭情况。2) scholarships奖学金:大约是平均$7000 per year, they depends on how hard you work ,主要看学习的努力程度。需要apply for it(申请)。私立学校的奖学金相对来说会更多,private universities tend to give out the most scholarships。other ways to earn money:其他收入方式很多学生work part-time jobson campus,比如在library, gym工作,或者做research assistant。 可能part-time jobs是stressful(有压力的),但对于学生来说,的确是great experience,也能够帮助pay off the student debt(还学生贷款)。

THE ORIGIN OF THIS MUSIC:Created by Gibbs Williams  It is hard to believe it has been decades since I graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School. It is even harder to believe that I received an invitation to attend the 65th reunion. Unfortunately, with the covid pandemic still in the air, although vaccinated, I thought it prudent better to pass up this event hoping conditions fare more salutary for the 70th. Although disappointed I would miss the reunion I was struck by a wave of pleasurable nostalgia.           Recalling those the best of those glorious days I remember the feelings of the cool Miami Beach breezes enveloping us on our weekly Friday night dances in the patio of our high school. All who attended seemed hypnotized with feelings of a pervasive feeling of at-one-ment in which we collectively bathed in what was then and even now experienced as our own unique mixture of heroin- like- atmosphere. This natural high was experienced by many of us as nothing short of pure unadulterated nostalgia. Nostalgia then and now was like our living in a collective commune protecting us from what probably would have been experienced as overwhelming normal adolescent pain if we had been open to feeling it.  I was especially nostalgic remembering my self and four other guys daring to form a small combo good enough to play at all of the school dances. We even played well enough that every New Years Eve a Miami Beach Hotel hired us to perform. Our Small combo consisted of Drums (Marvin Guccion), Bass (John Schaffer), Trombone (Peter Weill), Trumpet (Kenny Kupper) and Piano (Gibbs Williams). Unknowingly we had no knowledge that we were on the cutting edge of what would soon be an explosion of worldwide bands.           In is in this memorable context that I wish to share an album of some of those unforgettable songs which best seem to celebrate the richness not only of those glorious days from the 9th to the 12th grade, but all the years that have too quickly passed - as well as the years that are yet to come. It is unfortunate that we never recorded our iconic sounds. The best I can offer with the goal in mind of capturing the sounds we made are my original arrangements made on my Yamaha synthesizer. The songs we played were standards from the forties and fifties. I have titled this compilation Nostalgia.                                "NOSTALGIA" -  65 th REUNION - MIAMI BEACH HIGH SCHOOL - CLASS of 55Album1 Moon Over Miami , Ebb Tide, Star Dust, It Might As Well Be Spring, Teguilla, The Hucklebuck, Five Foot Two, Somewhere Along the Way, Im In The Mood For Love, Again, Blue Moon, Miami Beach Rhumba, Because of You, Rock Around the Clock, Down By The Riverside, Tammy's In Love, Where Is Your Heart, Don't Blame Me, If I Loved You, I'll Take Manhattan, The Man I Love, A Secret Love, Autumn Leaves, Summer Time, Mona LIsa, Take the A Train, Album 2Perfidia, It's No Sin, It Had To Be You, For Me And My Gal, Thrill Me, You're Just In Love, Yellow Bird, Canadian Sunset, A Taste Of Honey, Too Young, Saint Louis Blues, My Foolish Heart, You Belong To Me, Sleepy Time Gal, Body and Soul, The Nearness Of You, Misty, Sweet Georgia Brown, Blue Skies, Tenderly, Some Enchanted Evening, Bali High, Bewitched, Once Upon A Time, As Time Time Goes By, Aways, Fight Song Of The Miami Beach Hight Marching Band A and B.       I know all was not perfect then as we were all struggling to survive adolescence so those days were hardly always serene. Yet, there was, and still is for me and I imagine for many of my class mates, a certain undeniable 'specialness' about our class which for many of us still acts like a permanent magnet pulling us back again and again to re-unite.       As for me, if we had been recognized as ground-breaking I am certain our lives at least vocationally would have taken a much different route. However, I can honestly say that I am happy to being a still practicing psychoanalyst in New York City - a happily married husband and father having started our own dynasty of four grandchildren.

I have titled this compilation Nostalgia.                                "NOSTALGIA" -  65 th REUNION - MIAMI BEACH HIGH SCHOOL - CLASS of 55 Moon Over Miami , Ebb Tide, Star Dust, It Might As Well Be Spring, Teguilla, The Hucklebuck, Five Foot Two, Somewhere Along the Way, Im In The Mood For Love, Again, Blue Moon, Miami Beach Rhumba, Because of You, Rock Around the Clock, Down By The Riverside, Tammy's In Love, Where Is Your Heart, Don't Blame Me, If I Loved You, I'll Take Manhattan, The Man I Love, A Secret Love, Autumn Leaves, Summer Time, Mona LIsa, Take the A Train,Perfidia, It's No Sin, It Had To Be You, For Me And My Gal, Thrill Me, You're Just In Love, Yellow Bird, Canadian Sunset, A Taste Of Honey, Too Young, Saint Louis Blues, My Foolish Heart, You Belong To Me, Sleepy Time Gal, Body and Soul, The Nearness Of You, Misty, Sweet Georgia Brown, Blue Skies, Tenderly, Some Enchanted Evening, Bali High, Bewitched, Once Upon A Time, As Time Time Goes By, Aways, Fight Song Of The Miami Beach Hight Marching Band A and B.

Kanye West was ejected from Radio City Music Hall at the MTV VMAs on 13th September, 2009, after drunkenly interrupting Taylor Swift's acceptance speech for Best Female Video.Distraught that the country star's ‘You Belong To Me' video has beaten Beyonce's ‘Single Ladies' to the trophy, he memorably proclaimed: “Yo Taylor, I'm really happy for you, I'mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time! Our guest is singer Steven Maglio whose sound is reminiscent of the great Frank Sinatra. THE NEW YORK TIMES said of Steve, “Steven Maglio does not have blue eyes, but with his smooth croon & Rat Pack swagger, listeners just might imagine they were at the Copa Room at the Sands in 1963.” While Steven Maglio is a singer of standards. Although he is especially appreciated for his renditions of songs made popular by Frank Sinatra, he is NOT an impersonator. https://www.stevenmaglio.com/home THE BEGINNING I was born in East Harlem, N.Y. on December 25, 1958. In 1966, we moved to the Bronx, and being the new kid on the block, I walked back and forth to school alone for the first few weeks. I heard Frank Sinatra singing “My Kind Of Town,” and to pass the time on my new daily trek, I would sing the song to myself over and over. After a few days, I decided I needed another song and began to explore the only Sinatra album we owned at the time, “A Man And His Music.” This was the beginning of my addiction, not only to Sinatra, but to that whole world of standard songs and singers. It wasn't until age 43, after eight years of secretly taking voice lessons and one year of cruising the New Jersey karaoke circuit, that I made my professional debut at New York City's “Tavern On The Green,” as male vocalist with Joe Battaglia & The New York Big Band in June, 2002. Since then I've performed from Atlantic City to Las Vegas, from Cape Cod to Nashville, from Palm Beach to Beverly Hills, and from Brazil to Ecuador to Italy. In 2004, I started performing Frank Sinatra tribute shows at The Carnegie Club in New York, and I'm still singing there every Saturday evening. I've had the pleasure of entertaining President & Mrs. Donald Trump, Lisa Lampanelli, Vic Damone, Connie Francis, Jackie Mason, Danny DeVito, Rhea Perlman, William Shatner, Brad Garrett, Dennis Farina, The Kennedy Family, and most of the cast of “The Sopranos,” just to name a few. As well as multiple sports figures, politicians, business moguls, and members of the press. I've had the honor of sharing the stage with The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Frankie Valli, Wayne Newton, Dionne Warwick, Deana Martin, Tony Danza, Danny Aiello, Steve Tyrell, Joe Piscopo, Bucky Pizzarelli, Pat Cooper, Norm Crosby, Larry King, Johnny Maestro & The Brooklyn Bridge, The Spinners, and on a few occasions with Frank Sinatra's former pianist/conductor, Vincent Falcone, among others. I've appeared in the movies, “Frank & Alice,” “Once Upon A Time In Brooklyn,” “Once More With Feeling,” and in the music video, “For One More Day.” I've also sung “The Tender Trap” on the soundtrack of “My Best Friend's Girl.” In the Off-Broadway play, “Playing Sinatra,” my recordings of 11 popular Sinatra songs were used to replace the originals. I've released three CDs, “You Belong To Me & other songs Sinatra never recorded,” “Songs For Sinatra Lovers,” and “Sinatra en Bossa Nova.” Special highlights in my career were being the co-writer and official singer of “The Danny DeVito Limoncello Song,” used to promote the lemon flavored liquore that bore Danny DeVito's signature. Joining the all-star cast of The Cannolis television show. Becoming a member of the most prestigious organization in show business, The Friars Club. It's been a wild ride, and I'm far from being finished. The most common compliment paid to me is, “If Frank Sinatra heard the way you sing his songs …. he'd be proud.” AND I HOPE THAT'S TRUE ….. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/RickLertzman/support

FolkCast: the podcast that brings you the worlds of folk, folk-rock, singer-songwriter and roots music. THIS SHOW: Rewind Special. We step back from the constant cascade of brand new releases and take a bite – often a second or third bite – from records that are still new but maybe no longer brand spanking new. Deardra Shuler interviews Tony Testa of The Duprees who will be performing as part of a Doo Wop show at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in the Bronx, NY. on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 8:00 pm.  Other groups featured to appear with the Duprees are The Platters, The Belmonts, Barbara Harris & The Toys, Larry Chance & The Earls and Ragdoll. The Duprees were formed in the early 1960’s in Jersey City, NJ by five William L. Dickinson High School students. They were discovered by big band leader George Paxton who combined their smooth doo-wop vocal harmonies with a big band backing on their first single, a cover of Jo Stafford’s “You Belong To Me”, which was an instant top-ten hit and million-seller. Thus the sound of the Duprees was born and hits in the same format kept coming throughout the 1960s including “My Own True Love,” “Take Me As I Am,” “Why Don't You Believe Me,” “Have You Heard,” “Love Eyes,” “It Isn't Fair” and “Let Them Talk.” Over the years, various members of the band have come and gone, but their unique mixture of doo-wop vocals with big band arrangements has remained. Along with Tony Testa, Jimmy Spinelli, Tommy Petillo, and Phil Granito make up the rest of the current group. Original member Michael Kelly left the group in 2012.  The other 3 original members, Joe Santollo, Joey (Canzano) Vann and Michael J Arnone passed. In 2006, the original Duprees were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Lehman Center for the Performing Arts is located on the Lehman College campus, located at 250 Bedford Park Boulevard West, Bronx, NY 10468. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Lehman Center box office at 718-960-8833 or online at www.LehmanCenter.org.
