He's back! Ned LeDoux was on episode 70 back in the day and A LOT has changed since then. LeDoux's life has been scarred by tragedy, and when faced with unimaginable losses, the singer-songwriter was presented with a choice: either drown in the sorrow or turn these lives gone too soon into music, into song-like statues of the people he misses most. It was an honor to hear some never-before-told stories and catch up with an old friend. We hope you enjoy this episode! Visit cowboyshit.ca for the newest sh!t

Savanna, daughter of the Heartland's Flint Hills, returns to share with me new music making its radio debut on my turn as host of MidCoast Live! On KKFI…a weekly live performance radio show that welcomes all genres of music and spoken word performance.  On this episode you will hear these new bona fide country music selections: L-O-V-E Same Beer, Different Day Honky Tonk Heartbreaker Trailer No.3 In our latest conversation, we re-visit how I first discovered Savanna's songcraft.   It is alive with visual imagery indigenous to the Heartland and illustrative of a path a young generative artist like Savanna navigates every day in an industry…in a world not always kind or supportive of a woman flying solo or fronting a band. Her love for performing started in her grandparent's “Sodie Bar” on karaoke night when she was a little girl and has since taken her all across the country. From dive bars, fairs, festivals and rodeos, to season 20 of The Voice on NBC where she was chosen by Blake Shelton, Savanna has won over audiences with her unique, yet nostalgic country style.  Savanna has won multiple songwriting contests and has been nominated 4 times for Female Vocalist of the Year at the Rocky Mountain Country music awards. She has shared the stage with acts such as Gary Allan, Sara Evans, Justin Moore, Eli Young Band, Reckless Kelly, Granger Smith, Tanya Tucker, Jason Boland, Ned Ledoux and many others. She has 3 studio albums of original music available on all streaming platforms.  To quote Savanna "Country music has always been my shoulder to lean on, no matter what. I can always relate to it, and always rely on it. That's how I want my songs to be for others. Just honest, genuine, country music." Enjoy my conversation with and musical performance by Savanna Chestnut!

Wheels Off with Rhett Miller

After telling the story of the musicians who shaped his Oklahoma roots in his 2020 book Red Dirt, journalist and author Josh Crutchmer saw an opportunity to dig deeper into the artists that shaped independent roots music. His second book, The Motel Cowboy Show, is about the Americana music in the American West that began with cowboy poetry and lives on today in artists like Reckless Kelly, Micky and the Motorcars, and Ned LeDoux. A New York Times editor by day, Crutchmer also spent three years chronicling the return of the Turnpike Troubadours to the stage and studio for Rolling Stone, as well as the final concert for Robert Earl Keen. In this episode, he joins Rhett to talk about the path that led him to writing, how he approaches his role as a storyteller, and the personal obstacle he uncovered while working on his latest book. On this episode of Roger the Wild Child Show, we are joined by singer/songwriter Ned LeDoux and country/rocker, Sticktight Akins!NED LEDOUXNed LeDoux began building a fervent and loyal fan base as a constant touring force as a drummer in his dad's band. In January 2016 he put down the sticks, picked up a guitar and stepped to the front of the stage.LeDoux began pursuing that dream at an early age, and even though he grew up in the shadow of his legendary father, he's successfully carved his own path. “If I can be half the man he was I think I'll be okay,” he says with an easygoing grin, “but when it comes to songwriting I've got to write my own story. I've played drums for years and got my first band when I was in junior high. I went on to play drums with my dad from 1998 until he passed away in 2005, and then I started doing solo gigs.”On Buckskin, LeDoux again delivers songs that transcend mere entertainment to celebrate a life that many aspire to, but few actually live. Like his father, LeDoux's music is as expansive as the western sky he was raised under and celebrates the ranch lifestyle that is such an integral part of his heritage. There's an authenticity to his songs that brings our nation's beloved western culture to life, even for listener's who've never ventured onto the Great Plains. One of the most incredible things about great music is that it has the ability to take the listener to a place they'd rather be.  A compelling song can carry someone back in time to a treasured memory, or transport a person to a spectacular western prairie they've only visited in their dreams. Ned LeDoux's music has that kind of power. As a songwriter, he has a knack for bringing people, places and emotions vibrantly to life with his insightful lyrics, and warm, strong voice that makes him sound like a beloved friend you always want to hang out with. Those gifts are fully on display on LeDoux's new album Buckskin.   LeDoux is well respected for his high-energy live shows that mix his western roots with the rock and roll influences he acquired in his youth. He routinely headlines his own shows as well as earning coveted opening slots for Toby Keith, Aaron Watson and Garth Brooks. “We opened for Garth at the 125th anniversary for Cheyenne frontier Days last July which was crazy,” he says. “When people are coming out to our shows and spending their hard-earned money on a ticket, I don't want to leave them disappointed. We're going to give you a show and leave you wanting more. I'm always out of breath and soaking wet when we're done, but it's so much fun!”STICKTIGHT AKINSSTICKTIGHT, is a High Energetic Country Rock artist from the heart of the Bluegrass State bringing you the best of Classic Anthems and today's hits as well as original music! The 24-year-old Country singer-songwriter writes songs from his experiences growing up in South Central Kentucky, paying homage to his roots, tales and stories from traveling on the road, and making the most out of life appreciating what you have. Sticktight's influences come from multiple genres and artists, from pioneers such as Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Travis Tritt, Hank Williams, Jr., and modern chart toppers like Keith Urban, Chris Janson, and Morgan Wallen, to legendary rockers such as Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Seger, Def Leppard, Poison, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Mötley Crüe, etc. His animation on stage is impeccable with outstanding crowd interaction, as well as an astonishing charismatic performance that the audience can feel his love and passion for what he's doing.Sticktight's Band comprises of seasoned professionals, well grounded musicians with abounding years of performing experience. Those gifts are fully on display on LeDoux's new album Next In Line.     “I'm writing my own story and if people take a liking to it, that's wonderful,” says LeDoux. “As long as I'm writing from the heart, and writing about what I know, I can definitely listen back to it and be proud."     LeDoux has good reason to be proud of Next In Line. It's populated with songs that reflect his roots and honor the hard-working characters who have influenced his life;like his grandfather, Bud Rhoads, who he tips his cowboy hat to with the earnest tribute “Worth It”. He celebrates his brother Beau on the upbeat “A Cowboy is All” and he closes the album by putting his own spin on his famous father, Chris LeDoux's “Homegrown Western Saturday Night."     On his second full-length album, LeDoux again delivers songs that transcend mere entertainment to celebrate a life that many aspire to, but few actually live. “I'm proud to carry on the tradition and a lot of songs that I write are going to relate with songs that my dad wrote and recorded because I lived the same life,” the young singer/songwriter says. “I was born and raised on a ranch, which my family still owns outside of Kaycee, Wyoming. That was my life and it's reflected in the songs I write. I just think back to those days working on a ranch and hanging out with my granddad, who taught me how to drive a tractor, work cows and everything that is associated with ranching, but music has always been my dream.”     LeDoux began pursuing that dream at an early age, and even though he grew up in the shadow of his legendary father, he's successfully carved his own path. “If I can be half the man he was I think I'll be okay,” he says with an easygoing grin, “but when it comes to songwriting I've got to write my own story. I've played drums for years and got my first band when I was in junior high. I went on to play drums with my dad from 1998 until he passed away in 2005, and then I started doing solo gigs.”     LeDoux made his recording debut with the 2016 EP Forever a Cowboy and followed up with his first full-length project, Sagebrush, in 2017. Both projects, as well as his new effort, Next In Line, were produced by singer/songwriter/guitarist Mac McAnally, who has won the CMA Musician of the Year Award an unprecedented 10 times. “He's my songwriting mentor and his guidance in the studio is wonderful,” LeDoux says. “He's a great guy to be around. Nobody phrases things like he does. I don't know if there's something in that Muscle Shoals water or what, but he's a very inspiring character. He gave me great songwriting advice. He said, ‘Just write about what you know. Write the truth because it comes out a lot easier and people are going to believe you.”     LeDoux says his years playing drums were a factor when choosing songs to record on the new album. “I was going for some more tempo and trying to write stuff that has a little more kick to it. I think we definitely got that,”

Real Conversations with Jacob Young

This week Jocob sits down with country music and rodeo royalty, the song of Chris LeDoux, singer-songwriter Ned LeDoux.  LeDoux is well respected for his high-energy live shows that mix his western roots with the rock and roll influences he acquired in his youth. He routinely headlines his own shows as well as earning coveted opening slots for Toby Keith, Aaron Watson and Garth Brooks. “We opened for Garth in Indianapolis last year and it was our first football stadium which was crazy,” he says. “When people are coming out to our shows and spending their hard-earned money on a ticket, I don't want to leave them disappointed. We're going to give you a show and leave you wanting more. I'm always out of breath and soaking wet when we're done, but it's so much fun!”      Ned LeDoux is carrying on the family tradition, but he's also charting his own course, and Next In Line is the latest step on that journey. “I hope I inspire people to never forget where you came from,” he says. “That's one thing I'm very proud of. I'm carrying on a tradition, but I'm writing my own story. I'm very proud of my family and friends and there's one piece of advice my mom gave me when we were kids: ‘Never forget where you came from and show respect to people no matter where you are.' So with this album I hope to inspire and show people, ‘Hey this old cowboy isn't changing for nobody.' I want people to know they should never give up on a dream. There's always time. Just keep on going. Real Conversations with Jacob Young is brought to you by Boys Town.  FOLLOW JACOB: Instagram  Facebook Twitter

First as Chris LeDoux's right hand man to now backing Chris' son Ned LeDoux on the road. From the first phone call from Kaycee, WY to first their handshake in Salt Lake City, The bond between Chris and Mark was predestined to be friends for life.    Recorded March 10, 2021 Episode Sponsored by: Surfshark and Passport America.   FROM WIKIPEDIA: Chris LeDoux (October 2, 1948 – March 9, 2005) was an American country music singer-songwriter, bronze sculptor, and hall of fame rodeo champion. During his career LeDoux recorded 36 albums (many self-released) which have sold more than six million units in the United States as of January 2007. He was awarded two gold and one platinum album certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), was nominated for a Grammy Award, and was honored with the Academy of Country Music Music Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award. LeDoux is also the only person to participate and also perform at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.  LeDoux was born in Biloxi, Mississippi, on October 2, 1948. He was of French descent on his father's side. His father was in the US Air Force and was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base at the time of his birth. The family moved often when he was a child, due to his father's Air Force career. He learned to ride horses while visiting his grandparents on their Wyoming farm. At age 13, LeDoux participated in his first rodeo, and before long was winning junior rodeo competitions. LeDoux continued to compete in rodeo events and played football through his high school years. When his family moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming, he attended Cheyenne Central High School. After twice winning the Wyoming State Rodeo Championship bareback riding title during high school, LeDoux earned a rodeo scholarship to Casper College in Casper. During his junior year at Eastern New Mexico University, LeDoux won the Intercollegiate National bareback riding Championship. LeDoux married Peggy Rhoads on January 4, 1972. They had five children: Clay, Ned, Will, Beau, and Cindy. Rodeo success and music beginnings In 1970, LeDoux became a professional rodeo cowboy on the national circuit. To help pay his expenses while traveling the country, he began composing songs describing his lifestyle. Within two years, he had written enough songs to make up an album, and soon established a recording company, American Cowboy Songs, with his father. After recording his songs in a friend's basement, LeDoux "began selling his tapes at rodeo events out of the back of his pickup truck". In 1976, LeDoux won the world bareback riding championship at the National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City. Winning the championship gave LeDoux more credibility with music audiences, as he now had proof that the cowboy songs he wrote were authentic. LeDoux continued competing for the next four years. He retired in 1980. Music career With his rodeo career at an end, LeDoux and his family settled on a ranch in Kaycee, Wyoming. LeDoux continued to write and record his songs, and began playing concerts. His concerts were very popular, and often featured a mechanical bull (which he rode between songs) and fireworks. By 1982 he had sold more than 250,000 copies of his albums, with little or no marketing. By the end of the decade he had self-released 22 albums. Despite offers from various record labels, LeDoux refused to sign a recording contract, instead choosing to retain his independence and control over his work while enjoying his regional following. In 1989, however, he shot to national prominence when he was mentioned in Garth Brooks' Top 10 country hit "Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)." Capitalizing on the sudden attention, LeDoux signed a contract with Capitol Records subsidiary Liberty Records and released his first national album, Western Underground, in 1991. His follow-up album, Whatcha Gonna Do with a Cowboy, was certified gold and reached the Top 10. The title track, a duet with Brooks, became LeDoux's first and only Top 10 country single, reaching No. 7 in 1992. In concert, he ended the song by saying, "Thanks, Garth!" For the 35th annual Grammy Awards in 1992, the single track "Whatcha Gonna Do with a Cowboy" was nominated for Best Country Vocal Collaboration. For the next decade, LeDoux continued to record for Liberty. He released six additional records, including One Road Man, which made the country Top 40 in 1998. Toward the end of his career, LeDoux began recording material written by other artists, which he attributed to the challenge of composing new lyrics. With his 2000 release, Cowboy, he returned to his roots, re-recording many of his earliest songwriting creations. The RIAA certified two gold and one platinum recordings for LeDoux. On February 22, 1993, the single "Whatcha Gonna Do with a Cowboy" went gold. On June 2, 1997, the album The Best of Chris LeDoux went gold. And on October 5, 2005, the album 20 Greatest Hits went platinum. Illness and death In August 2000, LeDoux was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis, which required him to receive a liver transplant. Garth Brooks volunteered to donate part of his liver, but it was incompatible. An alternative donor was located, and LeDoux received a transplant on October 7, 2000. After his recovery he released two additional albums. In November 2004, LeDoux was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma for which he underwent radiation treatment until his death. LeDoux died of cancer on March 9, 2005, at age 56. His funeral was held on March 11.   https://www.facebook.com/hotcountrypodcast https://www.hotcountrypodcast.com  https://www.facebook.com/OfficialChrisMcKay

A.J. Escuchar audio

We had the distinct pleasure of sitting  down with Ned Ledoux while he was in town performing a couple shows for the 35th annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. From the moment we  sat down to the conclusion of the interview Ned in his own way put us at ease and made the next hour or so fly by with stories of his childhood growing up on the ranch in Wyoming and how he got started in music by playing a set of drums in the basement. We of course talked about what it was like having the legendary Chris Ledoux for a father and honestly we weren't surprised at how close the apple falls from the tree.  Ned is as genuine as they come and lives his life committed to the western way of life, faith in God and family and telling stories through his music.
