Is it harder to recruit new professors? Syllabus host Mark Oppenheimer asks Buchanan these tough questions, after Buchanan's decision to leave the UF.Gues Bio: Neil H. How do you develop such expertise that you are able to perform at so high level under so many obstacles and pressures as Sebastian Vettel did in the 2012 Brazil GP? Sebastian was leading the championship 13 points ahead of Alonso before the race. In the first lap, Sebastian collided with Bruno Senna and spun, whilst Alonso made his way up in the pack, looking like the title favourite then at the wet conditions. Sebastian seemed to do all the right things after the disastrous start. How is this possible? How is one able to "do the right thing" in chaotic and complex situations? Why deliberate experience is better for developing expertise than deliberate practice? In this episode I got the chance to talk with a long-standing colleague, great coach and academic, Dr. Neil Buchanan. We discussed most of the time about expertise - what it is and how to develop it, and brought about some practical examples from the corporate and sport world - including Sebastians´ race in 2012. For a more detailed record of what happened in that race, please listen to the man himself in this podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Li5ahzPxMmIDr. Neil Buchanan did his PhD in expertise and talent development. He is currently director for the performance psychology programme at University of Edinburgh. Neil also works as a performance coach for Hintsa Performance and has his own consultancy Overmind. Neil is a family man with wife and a daughter, who enjoys hill walks in beautiful Scotland. The specific topics we covered include narratives and their roles in our lives & expertise, routine expertise vs. adaptive expertise, psychological flexibility, fusing and defusing with thoughts and emotions, naturalistic decision making and more. It's just Ryan and Stephen in this week's throwback Dodging Death, as Paul and Josh couldn't make it for reasons that are simply just not good enough.  In this week's episode: Stephen reveals why he recently reported his neighbour to the community watch Facebook group, and explains why he can always rely on Wilson from Home Improvement. Ryan launches an impassioned attack on the concept of the meal deal, along with delivering a heartfelt tribute to his local hero, Keith Chegwin. The team also dissect the major stories of the week, including David Blaine's balloon trick and whether Neil Buchanan is actually Banksy. Don't worry, there's still room for an impromptu feature, as Stephen and Ryan test each others Emma Thompson knowledge, in a game called, 'Nanny McGee' Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/dodgingdeathpodcast  Email us: dodgingdeathpodcast@gmail.com  Follow us on Instagram: @dodgingdeathpodcast Follow Stephen on Instagram: @stephenwilliams.jr Stephen's website: www.stephenwilliamsjr.com    About the show: Dodging Death is an improvised weekly comedy podcast, hosted by Stephen Williams Jr and Ryan Paton. Join them for an hour of generally uninformed, irrelevant chat - where they discuss topics such as being an accidental Peeping Tom, sleeping in the same room as Mother Teresa, and getting shouted at by Santa. Stephen is an openly gay, cruise ship magician - and is proud to be at the front of that much underrepresented part of society. He is often heard regaling anecdotes such as how he found himself as a performer on a swingers cruise, his lowest life moment being with Paul Daniel's son at a patisserie in Brazil, and how he tried to blend in at an Australian dive bar. In hindsight, the floral shirt and exposed ankles were a mistake. Ryan has been Stephen's best friend since they first met at 11 years old and shared a communal love for the anecdote. He is the marketing manager for an afternoon tea company, is yet to attend a none catastrophic yoga class, and once got heckled by an eleven year old for being too scared to go on a water slide. He's also openly hetero, although his constant praise of ABBA could lead you to believe otherwise.
