What if we have barely scratched the surface of human potential? According to Nichol Bradford, a pioneer in technology and human transformation, we need to challenge the assumption that machines will surpass humanity. Nichol has led operations for gaming giants like Activision Blizzard and Epic Games in China. She built communities that connected people globally through the power of shared narratives. Now she lectures at Stanford and Singularity University, while investing in startups focused on wellbeing and personal growth. In this episode of Unlearn Podcast, Nichol and host Barry O'Reilly discuss how we can use technology to unlock our emotional intelligence, creativity, and cognition. Rather than a dystopian future of humans versus machines, she proposes a human-centered path to amplify our abilities.A Passion for Human TransformationWhile writing a book and reflecting on her life's path, Nichol realized she's always cared about the "act of transformation" - how someone becomes their best self. She first recognized this passion at age 13, when she vowed to overcome her shyness and find her place in the world. By senior year, through purposeful effort, she went from wallflower to popular student. This early experience showed Nichol the power of deciding who you want to be and taking action to become that person. Barry highlights that stepping outside your comfort zone can unlock tremendous self-learning. Some of his most formative moments were from personal choices to pursue the unknown. Though uncomfortable, these experiences expanded his worldview and self-knowledge.Unlearning Limiting Beliefs that Restrict Human Potential“What I'm interested in is human potential realized,” Nichol tells Barry. “And then how do we use technology to amplify that?” Our long-held assumptions place artificial limits on how we envision human potential. In reality, we have barely begun to tap the capabilities of the human body and mind, she remarks. Neuroscience research reveals the brain's uncanny abilities that operate below our conscious awareness. In one study analyzing AI-generated images, people's conscious minds were fooled by fake faces, but their subconscious brain activity showed they could distinguish real from fake 100% of the time.State of FlowWhen people are in rapport, their nervous systems synchronize in measurable ways; for example, their pupils dilate in rhythm, their voices harmonize, and their movements align subconsciously. This state is called synchrony. It is visible during group flow states, like when a sports team is "in the zone" together. However, synchrony alone doesn't guarantee group flow, Nichol says. The key distinction is that group flow always involves synchrony, but people can exhibit synchrony without experiencing group flow. Barry adds that high performing teams often have natural synchrony, but explicitly naming it as a goal and measuring it could be powerful. Computers and AI can now detect synchrony objectively by analyzing video, audio, and physiological signals. There is enormous potential in applying technology like synchrony tracking to amplify human collaboration and group intelligence, Nichol and Barry agree. For example, if teams had a "synchrony score" during meetings, it could help them intentionally build more synchrony. For full show notes go to BarryO'reilly.comResourcesNichol Bradford on Website | LinkedIn | X (Twitter)

A lot of people believe the problems we're facing on a global scale are related to tech, says Nichol Bradford, pioneer, innovator, investor and thought leader at the intersection of technology and human transformation. But the truth is, much of what we're struggling with just boils down to a lack of belonging. “We craft these visions of the future where people can't see themselves in it, they can't see that they belong to it.”In this episode of Corporate Unplugged, Nichol discusses the future of human intelligence and why there can be no digital transformation without a human transformation, and explains why change needs to come from the top.“Culture eats strategy for breakfast. Culture is a collection of people, and how they show up with each other every day, and how one shows up with other people has everything to do with how you show up with yourself. It starts with you. It always starts with you.”To find out more, download and listen to this latest episode. Why does one go from being a highly successful video game executive to becoming a catalyst for the use of technology in supporting emotional, psychological and spiritual wellbeing? In this engaging #NomadFuturist podcast, Nichol Bradford, Co-founder of TransformativeTech.org, shares her deeply personal journey.  “I grew up as a little black girl in Texas in the 80’s and was interested in Star Trek, where you had a future where mankind had decided that they were all on the same team…where diversity was celebrated.” Bradford graduated from the Wharton School of Business and after unfulfilling experiences in banking and consulting, decided to pursue a career in the video game industry. “I was interested in the next evolution in human story telling…Games are a combination of play, narrative, community and exploration.”  She ultimately spent six years with Blizzard in China as Head of Operations for World of Warcraft and Starcraft China running both the front-end and back-end of the business. Bradford loved the work but ended up feeling incredibly lonely. This led her to the practice of meditation and eventually to a ten-day meditation retreat which was transformational: “In ten days, I was unafraid, incredibly happy and I felt deeply connected to everyone.” Bradford realized that most people do not have the resources or time to experience that kind of transformation. This became the impetus for her to explore ways in which technology can democratize access to things like therapy and child development resources, what she calls “the good stuff about human growth and development, about how we learn, about how to feel, be, and become.” “I’m working with founders, researchers, innovators and investors to catalyze the Wellbeing Tech category…where people are really pushing into this inner layer… What I am really looking for are things that are helping with social wellness, emotional well-being and self-regulation.” Bradford asserts that the goal is not to replace humans. She believes the very best examples of these products are ones that have humans in the loop where the technology brings a human, either live or virtually, to help with an overall program. Though she is aware of some of the pitfalls of the virtual modality, Bradford is highly optimistic about achieving authentic human connection via technology. Bradford co-founded and built Transformative Tech.org, a global ecosystem dedicated to educating, gathering, and activating wellbeing tech founders, investors, and innovators. The organization has members in 72 countries and 450 cities. She also curates the Transformative Tech Conference -- the most important event at the intersection of tech and wellbeing (www.ttconf.org).   Prior to Transformative Tech, Bradford served as senior interactive entertainment executive with responsibility for strategy, operations and marketing for major brands including: Activision Blizzard, Disney, and Vivendi.   Bradford speaks extensively on Human Transformation, Transformative Tech, the Future of Health, Work, and Human Excellence, and Flourishing Cities.  She is a lecturer at Stanford University, has an MBA from the Wharton School of Business, and attended Singularity University’s Global Solutions program.  She is the author of The Sisterhood, a work of transformative Afro-futuristic fiction. In her spare time, her favorite activities are meditation and combat sports.

What we can do today, what we have come to understand about our selves and the universe in the past decade, has been on an exponential growth curve that is reaching a near vertical trajectory. Equally, I see the inherent challenges with humans who are not particularly well adapted to meet the circumstances of exponential rates of change. This week Nichol Bradford, CEO & Founder of the Willow Group and the Executive Director and co-founder of the Transformative Technology Lab, joins us for a discussion on technology and human potential. If you’re wondering what technology possibly has to do with meditation, then this episode will be sure to enlighten you! Years ago, Nichol worked as CEO in the major gaming industry when she decided to spend her four weeks off at a vipassana meditation retreat in Japan. By the end of it, she walked out feeling deeply connected and asking herself how she could use her experience with technology to bridge a gap and make meditation and mental balance more accessible for all. With a surge of fearlessness, she moved to San Francisco, “the intersection of consciousness and tech,” and started working with other neuroscientists and wellbeing tech innovators who were studying the brain and the bio-states of people who were in these states. As they developed this research, they’ve been able to see why different techniques are important for each individual and how they can use technology to help people heal, grow, and prosper, both mentally and psychologically. We are so thrilled to have Nichol here to teach us all about her work, and we know you’ll be excited to learn about it too! “Are we in the best of times? Or the end of times? One of the oddities of the current era is that extreme pessimism about the world coexists with extreme optimism — and both have a plausible case to make.” I’m quoting Gideon Rachman from a recent Financial Times piece about Bill Gates and David Attenborough. Broadly speaking, Gates is a technooptimist: convinced, like his friend Steven Pinker, that the world’s getting better all the time due to technological and scientific progress, and that our problems are largely solvable. Attenborough is the world’s most recognizable narrator of nature documentaries and, well, with all that’s been happening to the flora and the fauna of the Earth, you can probably guess where he stands. My guest today, neuroscientist and MIT president emerita Susan Hockfield, is the author of the new book THE AGE OF LIVING MACHINES. And I think it’s fair to say she leans toward the Bill Gates side of the spectrum. Given what she’s seen and done in her historic career, it’s easy to understand why. The technologies she looks at in the book sit at the intersection of biology and engineering—what Hockfield calls “Convergence 2.0”. From water filters based on cellular proteins to self-assembling batteries, they seem miraculous, even to the trained eye. And they’re densely packed with hope for human ingenuity, and for solving global problems from food shortages to climate change. Learn how the journey for a solution to discontentment gave rise to a reliable protocol for dramatic transformation. Integrating technology, neurological imaging, psychological studies and meditation practices, The Finders Course, has made a massive impact. Co-Founders of the Transformative Technology Lab, Dr. Jeffery Martin, and Nichol Bradford, share with us how they have crafted this personalized approach to psycho-spiritual development. Their work was carefully constructed to make finding each individual’s path to higher states of consciousness reachable, reliable, and measurable. Biometrics and psychometrics that correlate with peak happiness are commonly observed in individuals who have also achieved elevated conscious awareness through their breakthrough practices. Those practices were surveyed and compiled into a comprehensive course. By identifying what worked for their collection of subjects, then mapping out the discernible methods, Dr. Martin and Ms. Bradford aim to provide a guided tour of techniques designed to help individuals find their way into a dramatic psychological transformation, like a key in a lock. The persistent goal of their cutting edge technology is to amplify mental health, emotional wellbeing, and human thriving. Nichol is the co-founder of Trans Tech Conference (www.ttconf.org), Transformational Technology Labs, Willow Group, and Finder’s Course. She’s batting 1000 in the Transformational Technology world. First off, I’d like to get pedantic for a moment: There are many words for Mind (Brain, Consciousness, Intelligence, etc… ). Similarly, there are many evolving words to represent what’s happening with the emergent field of mind-altering technologies. Transformational Tech is an expanding field bridging psychology, healthcare, sensing and computing technology, and wellness. Nichol sits right at the pinnacle of this mountain. She has such a unique perch, interfaces with so many incredible Entrepreneurs, Creators, Business People, and Thought Leaders. Her Market landscape graphs, research on Trans-Tech financing, and her ability to peer into the future of wearable computing, distributed knowledge, and healthcare’s rapid transformation is so welcomed and needed. Hope you enjoy the conversation. Nichol is a prolific publisher, and impeccable researcher, and a very sharp thinker. I am honored to have hosted her for the show.
