Today, J.G. have the distinct pleasure of interviewing a true icon of independent cinema, writer and director Alex Cox. Known for his distinctive style and rebellious spirit, Alex Cox has made a significant mark on the film industry with his unique vision and uncompromising approach to storytelling.   Alex Cox first burst onto the scene in the mid-1980s with his cult classic (that we watched here on TIR movie night most recently) "Repo Man," a film that masterfully blends punk rock, science fiction and dark comedy. He followed this with the critically acclaimed "Sid and Nancy," a gritty and poignant portrayal of the tumultuous relationship between Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen. Throughout his career, Cox has consistently challenged conventional filmmaking norms, producing a body of work that is both provocative and thought-provoking.   Today we will not only be discussing Alex's past works, but his latest vision, “My Last Movie”. My "last movie" is a Western version of Nicolai Gogol's "Dead Souls' '. According to Alex, Dead Souls, “..is a great book, full of irony, mystery and meaning.” Alex is once again bypassing Hollywood by starting a crowdfunding campaign. Wherever you are listening to or watching there is a link in the description to contribute.    Join us as we sit down with Alex Cox, a maverick filmmaker whose work has left an indelible impact on the world of cinema. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to his films, this conversation promises to be a fascinating journey into the mind of one of the most original voices in contemporary filmmaking.   Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out.

Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (1809 - 1852)Translated by D. J. Hogarth Dead Souls (Russian: Мёртвые души) by Nikolai Gogol, Russian writer, was first published in 1842, and is one of the most prominent works of 19th-century Russian literature. Gogol himself saw it as an "epic poem in prose", and within the book as a "novel in verse". Despite supposedly completing the trilogy's second part, Gogol destroyed it shortly before his death. Although the novel ends in mid-sentence (like Sterne's Sentimental Journey), it is usually regarded as complete in the extant form.In Russia before the emancipation of the serfs in 1861, landowners were entitled to own serfs to farm their land. Serfs were for most purposes considered the property of the landowner, and could be bought, sold, or mortgaged against, as any other chattel. To count serfs (and people in general), the measure word "soul" was used: e.g., "six souls of serfs". The plot of the novel relies on "dead souls" (i.e., "dead serfs") which are still accounted for in property registers. On another level, the title refers to the "dead souls" of Gogol's characters, all of which visualise different aspects of poshlost (an untranslatable Russian word which is perhaps best rendered as "self-satisfied inferiority", moral and spiritual, with overtones of middle-class pretentiousness, fake significance, and philistinism). --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/librivox1/support

Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev audiobook. The fathers and children of the novel refers to the growing divide between the two generations of Russians, and the character Yevgeny Bazarov has been referred to as the "first Bolshevik", for his nihilism and rejection of the old order. Turgenev wrote Fathers and Sons as a response to the growing cultural schism that he saw between liberals of the 1830s/1840s and the growing nihilist movement. Both the nihilists (the "sons") and the 1830s liberals sought Western-based social change in Russia. Additionally, these two modes of thought were contrasted with the conservative Slavophiles, who believed that Russia's path lay in its traditional spirituality. Fathers and Sons might be regarded as the first wholly modern novel in Russian Literature (Gogol's Dead Souls, another main contender, is sometimes referred to as a poem or epic in prose as in the style of Dante's Divine Comedy). The novel introduces a dual character study, as seen with the gradual breakdown of Bazarov's and Arkady's nihilistic opposition to emotional display, especially in the case of Bazarov's love for Madame Odintsova and Fenichka. This prominent theme of character duality and deep psychological insight would exert an influence on most of the great Russian novels to come, most obviously echoed in the novels of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. The novel is also the first Russian work to gain prominence in the Western world, eventually gaining the approval of well established novelists Gustave Flaubert, Guy de Maupassant, and Henry James, proving that Russian literature owes much to Ivan Turgenev.

This is one of those conversations I won't forget easily. I spoke the unbelievably honest, vulnerable and thoughtful Leilani Squire about her childhood as a Navy brat during the Korean War, her deep dive into nefarious activities during her early adulthood, her iron-willed classical dance training, and, ultimately, her highly disciplined and inspiring writing career as a poet and playwright. Leilani is the winner of our inaugural 10-minute playwriting competition. About her play 15 DEAD SOULS, the judges said it was “poetic, touching, powerfully written.  Earnest — which is good — but also not sentimental.  Haunting and affecting.” Leilani Squire is a writer, certified creativity coach, and works with active duty, veterans and their families to help them tell their stories through the written word. The term “Revival” seems to bring about a lot of different ideals and definitions. At its core though, most would agree that it means to bring to life that which was dead. Whether it is reviving individual hearts that are spiritually dead, or seeing life breathed back into dead cultures and unfruitful systems, both are an important component of seeing true revival and reformation in our Nation and world. In this podcast, we discussed … • A Biblical perspective of revival. • What it looks like to truly be in revival. • What you can do practically to contend for revival and to carry revival into dead atmospheres. • What caused the downfall of past revivals and how we can learn from the past to see a sustainable model for revival today.
