Photo Credit: Tyler Follon - Wingman VisualsIn this episode of the Moral Imagination Podcast, I speak with Professor William Easterly of New York University about his work in development economics, and the problems of technocracy and social engineering of the poor. Easterly worked at the World Bank from 1985-2001 and began to be troubled by a number of things, including how aid is given without much concern about how it is distributed and managed thus subsidizing bad governance and harming the poor. We discuss Peter Bauer's critique of how foreign aid politicizes development and delayed the development of business in Africa, and Bauer's paradox of aid: * The countries that need aid — aid will not be effective* The countries where aid will be effective — do not need aid But the key problem with the dominant model of development is not simply a lack of efficiency, but the failure to respect the rights and agency of poor people. Easterly explains that development projects often result in people being deprived of their property, political rights, and participation and consent in the very projects that are supposed to help them. He discussed the tendency to to trivialize problems in the developing world, and the lack of feedback and market tests in development policy. We discuss how the developing world can often become a a lab for experiments for technocrats and social engineers. We also talk about Hayek's Knowledge Problem, a response to Marianna Mazucatto idea of moonshots, and what I call “embedded'“ economics. We discuss a number of issues including * “The Debate that Never Happened” - Gunnar Myrdal vs. Friedrich Hayek on development economics* Social Engineering * Technocracy and the Hubris of the Technocrat * Spontaneous Order* Edmund Burke and Friedrich Hayek * Soviet 5-year central planning as model for economic development * Limited Horizons of Humanitarianism— a secular, hollowed out version of Christian love the focuses on material at the expense of personal agency. * Lack of Accountability * Material vs. Non-material Needs * Materialist visions of the human person * People have a right to consent to their own progress * Harry Potter novels vs. Mosquito Nets * Marianna Mazucatto's ideas of Moonshots * vs. accidental discovery* vs opportunity costs * vs failed social engineering projects * and the complexity of economics and markets embedded in deep historical, cultural, norms, institutions, and religious foundations. * How to think about foreign aid and public goods like healthcare, infrastructure, education* Aid for emergencies vs. aid as answer to chronic poverty* Institutions of Justice including clear title to land, access to justice in the courts, ability to participate in the formal economy, and free exchange. * The impact of globalization on manufacturing in the US* Trade-offs and economic volatility * The moral rules that are needed for progress to beneficial * Consent, Self-Determination, Moral Equality * Attempts to develop Native Americans, US intervention in Philippines etc. * Material progress is never enough to justify interventionBiography William Easterly is Professor of Economics at New York University and Co-director of the NYU Development Research Institute, which won the 2009 BBVA Frontiers of Knowledge in Development Cooperation Award. He is the author of three books: The Tyranny of Experts: Economists, Dictators, and the Forgotten Rights of the Poor (March 2014), The White Man's Burden: Why the West's Efforts to Aid the Rest Have Done So Much Ill and So Little Good (2006), which won the FA Hayek Award from the Manhattan Institute, and The Elusive Quest for Growth: Economists' Adventures and Misadventures in the Tropics (2001).He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed academic articles, and has written columns and reviews for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Review of Books, and Washington Post. He has served as Co-Editor of the Journal of Development Economics and as Director of the blog Aid Watch. He is a Research Associate of NBER, and senior fellow at the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD).

As Canadians we have long prided ourselves in our compassionate heart to help the less vulnerable around the world. This is reflected in the many charities and non-profit NGOs that have been started by Canadians to serve the poor and needy internationally. Traditionally, this heart has also been reflected in our federal government's foreign policy through international aid. In 2010 Prime Minister Stephen Harper, hosting the powerful G-10 summit in Muskoka, ON, called on international leaders to join Canada in contributing billions of dollars to funding maternal health overseas. The initiatives that came forward from this saved the lives of both women and children in many nations across the world. When elected in 2015 Prime Minister Justin Trudeau repealed this funding and replaced it with what they called a new “Feminist Foreign Policy” which placed abortion at the forefront. Years later diplomats and activists are beginning to ask tough questions around whether or not Canada has actually been using money to essentially bully third world nations into adopting pro-choice practices that they do not agree with or want. At a time when our federal debt has been ballooning and there is such need right here in our long term care facilities, first nations reserves, among our vets and the like….every taxpayer dollar literally counts more than ever. It is right for Canadians to ask tough questions about where 650 million dollars of international funding has actually gone and whether it has actually helped. Here with me today to discuss the issue are two very distinguished guests. David Mulroney spent 32 years in the Canadian foreign service. He was the Ambassador for Canada to the People's Republic of China from 2009 to 2012. He joins me today along with internationally recognized author, filmmaker and human rights activist Obianuju Ekeocha.-----------------------------------------------------------Faytene.tv is a listener supported program. On "EWTN News Nightly" tonight: In an effort to assure and convince Americans that the coronavirus vaccines that arrived in record time are safe and effective, Vice President Mike Pence publicly received a coronavirus vaccine shot on live TV this morning. His wife Karen and the U.S. Surgeon General also rolled up their sleeves before the cameras. Meanwhile, all fingers point at Russia as the source of a huge cyber hack on government agencies. Republican Congressman Mike Gallagher, from Wisconsin, joins to talk more about the apparent cyberattack. The Food and Drug Administration is evaluating a vaccine developed by Moderna, and the National Institutes of Health. A final decision could clear the way for its use as early as Monday. Congressional leaders had set today as the deadline to approve a $900 billion pandemic relief deal, and tie it with a $1.4 trillion funding package, before the federal government runs out of money. Even though, Congressional aids pulled an all nighter, they are now expected to blow past their midnight deadline. Also, a new film, "Africa's Pandemic: A Gateway to Neocolonialism", explores how amid the COVID-19 pandemic, some western donors are using this time as an opportunity to push the ideology of legalized abortion under the cover of humanitarian relief to countries in the developing world. Founder and President of Culture of Life Africa, filmmaker and pro-life advocate, Obianuju Ekeocha, joins to talk more about the issue. In this episode, I speak with Obianuju Ekeocha about the problem of ideological colonialism in Africa in the 21st Century. We discuss how Western governments, international aid agencies, and NGOs impose western, secularist ideas about life, family, and marriage on Africa. Obianuju argues that what we are seeing is a type of cultural annexation of Africa by Western elites that is a new type of colonialism. She argues that just like with 20th century colonialism Western elites collude with African leaders and go against the will of the population. Obianuju (Uju for short) Ekeocha is the author of "Target Africa", the writer and producer of the documentary film, "Strings Attached", and the founder and president of Culture of Life Africa, an initiative dedicated to the promotion and defense of the African values of the sanctity of life, beauty of marriage, blessings of motherhood and the dignity of family life. Culture of Life Africa answers the assaults on these values with African women's voices. Visit https://www.themoralimagination.com/episodes/obianujo-ekeocha for show notes and resources.
In today's episode, we discuss the book "Target Africa" which explores neocolonialism and the ongoing oppression it is causing in developing countries. We also discuss justice from the biblical perspective and how God's desire is for His people to be part of the solution bringing "Restorative Justice" to the hurts in the world. We hope this will be the start of many conversations about these issues.

For over 200 years, cultural elites have been warning that overpopulation would destroy the world. To fight this false nemesis, these ideological colonizers have forced contraception, sterilization, and abortion on those they have deemed to most need it. In this episode, Don examines this racist, class based approach to "philanthropy" and draws back the curtain on some of the pain and injustice it has produced. You may have noticed that over the last couple of years, China has become a more frequent topic in the news and on BreakPoint commentaries. The reason is simple: its increasingly horrible treatment of Christians and other religious minorities. While other countries rank higher on Open Doors' recently released “World Watch List,” China's economic might, global clout, and sheer population size makes its contempt for religious freedom and treatment of religious minorities an enormous concern. In fact, the news from there in this regard is virtually all bad these days, and only getting worse. In light of the devolving conditions for our brothers and sisters in Christ in China, this year's Wilberforce Award winner is particularly fitting. Pastor Bob Fu is founder and president of ChinaAid, a Christian “human rights organization committed to promoting religious freedom and the rule of law in China.” It does so by exposing the systematic persecution, harassment, torture, and imprisonment of Chinese Christians and human rights lawyers in China. ChinaAid also “financially supports Chinese Christians and their families who have experienced persecution by the Chinese government,” and “provides leadership and rule of law training for Christians and church leaders in China to defend their rights.” Now, if the biblical phrase “for such a time as this” comes to your mind too, it should. Bob Fu never intended this would be his life. Born in Shandong Province to a disabled father and beggar mother, he enrolled in university, fully intending to join the Communist Party and become a government official. God, however, had other plans. An American professor gave him a biography of a Chinese intellectual who converted to Christianity. As Fu told the Wall Street Journal, “that book changed my life.” After graduation, Fu taught English at a Communist Party School in Beijing while he and his wife, Heidi, became active in the house church movement. They even established a Bible school, which used chairs he borrowed from the Communist Party's school. The Communist Party didn't quite share Fu's sense of irony. He and his wife were jailed. About a year after their release from jail, Heidi became pregnant. It was their second child. Because the “One-Child Policy” was still being vigorously enforced in China, they emigrated to Hong Kong which, at the time, was still under British rule. Fu was granted political asylum by the Clinton Administration in 1997. Just as the persecution of the Church has, at times throughout history, led to the unintended spreading of the Gospel, Pastor Fu's forced emigration has only increased his impact. From his base of operations in west Texas, he operates what the Wall Street Journal has called “the most influential network of human-rights activists, underground Christians and freedom fighters in China.” Some of what Fu and China Aid have accomplished is the stuff of movies: In 2009, Fu and his allies in China helped smuggle the wife and children of Christian human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, whom Amnesty International has called “the bravest lawyer in China,” out of the country. More recently, Fu worked closely with another human rights lawyer, Chen Guangcheng, a.k.a., “the barefoot lawyer,” whose harrowing escape from China was the topic of a BreakPoint commentary a few years ago. All of this has earned Fu a fitting nickname: “the Pastor of China's underground railroad.” For all these reasons and more, the Colson Center for Christian Worldview is pleased to announce that the 2020 William Wilberforce Award will be given to Pastor Bob Fu, a man who truly lives out his faith without fear—in truth and in love. Join us this May 14-17, just across the river from Washington, D. C., for this year's Wilberforce Weekend. We'll honor Dr. Bob Fu and hear from other Christian thought leaders like Os Guinness, Lee Strobel, Andy Crouch, Obianuju Ekeocha, Max McLean, and more.

As the culture wages war on life, Obianuju Ekeocha, founder and president of Culture of Life Africa, continues to fight by sharing the truth. You'll be surprised at the disturbing ways some non-profits are changing how they provide aid to those in need. Today's show is brought to you by our friends at Morning Star OB/GYN: http://www.morningstarobgyn.com and Pediatrics http://mstarpeds.com
Last week in Reykjavik, Iceland, The Women Leaders Global Forum gathered to recognize and celebrate women making a positive difference in the world. The “Trailblazer Award” honored women who've won high political office. Others were recognized for their work in easing various stigmas and discrimination women face around the world. There was even a category for female Nobel Prize Laureates—an award on top of an award, if you will. While I am happy to say congratulations to them all, I couldn't help but think of the amazing women who are at least as worthy of recognition yet are never mentioned at any of these secular events. The women I am thinking of have at least one thing in common: In their various causes and through very different work, they speak up for those who, in our culture, have no voice: the unborn, those with disabilities, or victims of the sexual revolution. In doing so, they stand courageously against powerful cultural norms. If they worked on behalf of culturally acceptable causes, their names would be celebrated with the others. Obianuju Ekeocha, or “Uju” as her friends call her, is the founder and president of Culture of Life Africa. A Nigeria-born biomedical scientist, she's devoted her life to promoting the sanctity of life, the beauty of marriage, and the blessing of family in Africa. In fact, Uju is one of the main leaders of the pro-life movement on that continent. Her bold declarations in defense of the unborn and against progressive sexual ethics is confronting what she calls Western ideological imperialism. By the way, Uju will be speaking at our 2020 Wilberforce Weekend this May, and trust me, you won't want to miss it. Another heroine to know: Rachael Denhollander. This gymnast-turned lawyer brought down USA Gymnastics doctor and serial abuser Larry Nassar. In doing so, she enabled hundreds of his victims to have a voice, and is now spending her time as a wife, a mother and a crusader for the dignity of women and girls, especially calling the church to take sexual abuse seriously. We recently interviewed her on the BreakPoint Podcast. Then there's Lila Rose, president and founder of Live Action. Lila is one of the most influential voices in the modern pro-life movement, and the unquestioned media leader. From her undercover work exposing Planned Parenthood to her defense of the pro-life cause in mainstream media, she's a powerhouse—and proof that the pro-life movement is, in many ways, being led by a younger generation. There's Katy Faust, an author, a children's-rights activist, and founder of the organization Them Before Us. She's challenging one of the foulest lies of the sexual revolution: that the desires of adults trump the rights of children, especially their right to have a mom and dad. In one of our recent “What Would You Say?” videos, she debunks the popular but poisonous idea that love is the only thing required to make a family. She'll also be at our next Wilberforce Weekend. Making the same case at the scholarly level is Helen Alvare, associate professor of law at George Mason University and a champion of life and the family in the legal sphere. She's one of the intellectual heavy-hitters of our time—including in amicus briefs to the Supreme Court—that marriage is worth preserving, children deserve parents, and unborn life is worth protecting. I feel like the author of Hebrews here. I'm running out of time to talk about Reggie Littlejohn, founder and president of Women's Rights Without Frontiers, and the world's leading opponent of sex-selective and forced abortion in China. And of course, Emily Colson and Joni Eareckson-Tada, who have dedicated their lives to honoring the dignity of those with disabilities, especially in recent years, leading battle against selective abortion, assisted suicide and euthanasia. Through books and speaking they've made the case, like few else can, that a society that welcomes the vulnerable is a beautiful place worth living in. These women are forces of restoration. Not only do they deserve recognition for the incredible work they do. They deserve recognition because the causes they represent and the groups for whom they speak aren't popular in this culture. God bless these worthy women. If I were on an award committee, they'd have my vote.
Western governments and nonprofit organizations think Africa has a problem: too many children. That's why BILLIONS of dollars are flowing to the continent with the express purpose of reducing the continent's fertility rate through contraception and abortion. These efforts are a condescending attempt to recolonize Africa by replacing a culture that treasures children and families with one that prioritizes secular values of economic growth and population control. On this episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, Shawn Carney and Robert Colquhoun talk with Culture of Life Africa Founder & President Obianuju Ekeocha about: How African culture is under attack from Western population control advocates Why citizens in Western countries should care about their governments' cynical attempts to promote population control in Africa Obianuju's documentary Strings Attached, which exposes international development policies that require the adoption of abortion and contraception in Africa
Western governments and NGOs are pushing the Sexual Revolution on Africa, using strings-attached development aid. Of all the funds from Western nations going to “development” in Africa, the majority are for population control. Obianuju Ekeocha is raising awareness about this form of neo-colonialism in which rich Westerners force their anti-culture on African peoples, because for them a better Africa is one with fewer Africans. One organization, Marie Stopes International, is even performing abortions in countries where they are illegal. First order of business: cultural apologetics. May I have permission to make a non-political point by using someone else’s political statement? [In this post on Twitter, Obianuju Ekeocha demonstrates clearly that many political heavyweights are spinning the tragedy in Sri Lanka](http://). I want you to look at this and ask yourself one question: why do they not want to say this terrorism was targeting Christians? Why does one famous, famous lady feed you a line of crap that Easter is a special day for many religions? Sometimes I think that’s all we have to do as Christian casemakers – ask a question of someone. The ones who will “get it” will get it, and others will be willfully blind no matter what your argument. And it will become clear that their agenda is not even neutral…that it is anti-Christian. And we should not be surprised. Aware, but not surprised. Bible segment: Reading along with The Bible Project Today’s personal prayer reading: Psalm 115 Translation: CSB (Christian Standard Bible) Our reading: Isaiah 28-30:26 Apologetics segment: Gary Habermas and Jesus’ uniqueness I’m wondering if it’d be interesting to call this a “news you can use” or “words you can use” section. • In modernity, a common objection is “science is real” and “religion is opinion.” • While we should test everything, including miracles, there are six places to test to see if Jesus’ claims were unmatched by founders of other major religions (it’s a beautiful thing about Christianity – it’s testable). • #1: Jesus claimed to be deity. o Buddha didn’t, and whatever spiritism or divinity is part of some Buddhist practices in China didn’t really develop until 700 years later. o Like Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism began more reservedly, and they later evolved into “more phenomenal, mystical, and occultic versions.” (p16) Some historians speculate that this happened, in part, due to competition for followers – they got more sensationalistic to attract attention. o Conclusion – in terms of self-claim to deity, these “naturalistic ethical, social, and political thinkers” (p16) are not rivals to Jesus. Today: what about other “prophets?” Let’s look at Zoroaster, chief prophet of the Persian religion. In today’s podcast, we’re talking about the ways that abortion advocates in western cultures are imposing their beliefs on the pro-life culture of Africans. We’ll speak with the author of “Target Africa”, Obianuju Ekeocha, about this concept of ideological colonization. Then in our Classic Catholic Social Teaching segment, we take a deep dive into the papal document “Populorum Progressio” the encyclical from Pope Paul VI on the development of peoples. We’ll also be providing you with practical tips on how to put your faith into action.
The nations of Africa have a long memory of European colonialism, and those memories are not good. Colonialism left in the 1960s, but one pro-life activist says it’s back in the form of pro-abortion ideology. Today we sit down with Nigerian activist Obianuju Ekeocha to discuss how Western nations are importing socially liberal values into Africa. We also cover these stories:--More suspicious packages turned up in the mailboxes of prominent Democrats on Thursday.--President Trump tweeted about the caravan, “I am bringing out the military for this national emergency. They will be stopped!”--Sen. Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, asks the Justice Department to investigate Julie Swetnick, who brought forward accusations of inappropriate conduct against Brett Kavanaugh, and her lawyer, Michael Avenatti. The Daily Signal podcast is available on Ricochet, iTunes, SoundCloud, Google Play, or Stitcher. Obianuju Ekeocha is taking on Melinda Gates and her quest to sterilize African women through contraception. Obianuju (Uju) tackles the terms and topics of ideological colonization, world population day/control, and birth control as "basic human right". Ever see a bully and want to stand up to him, but couldn’t quite do it? Maybe fear got in the way, or you figured the net result wouldn’t be worth it. Obianuju (“Uju” for short) Ekeocha has mastered the art of standing up to bullies in the form of those who push the culture of death onto her beloved Africa. In 2012, Uju had had enough of well-meaning First World leaders injecting contraception and abortion requirements into foreign policy to “help the poor Africans” and she wrote an Open Letter to Melinda Gates, wife of Bill. That Letter went viral and the foundress of Culture of Life Africa (www.cultureoflifeafrica.com) soon found herself debating pro-abortion advocates on the BBC, advising African Members of Parliament, and speaking at conferences around the world. In our interview, she shares insights into best practices for effectively and persuasively arguing on behalf of the culture of life. Uju is working on a major book by Ignatius Press, titled Target Africa, and is crowdfunding a documentary. Inspiring! June 13, 2013 This week’s episode: “Blessed are They”: St Margaret Mary “Among Women” Guest: Uju Ekeocha This week we talk with one Among Women listener about how she was blessed by the ministry of Among Women and how it deepened her faith and helped her discover how each woman is called to be a saint and be a force for good in the world. In this extended Among Women podcast, Uju Ekeocha describes her own growth in responding to what God is calling her, and us, to do to build a culture of life. A Catholic woman born and raised and educated in Nigeria, Africa, Uju is a Specialist Biomedical Scientist today in Canterbury, England, UK. Last year, her life began to change when her open letter of protest to Melinda Gates against proposed distribution of contraception to Africans in her country went viral and caught the attention of people around the world. The momentum led Uju to form Culture of Life Africa, an initiative that has just held its first pro-life conference in Nigeria, and is endorsed now by the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for the Laity, and the bishops conference in Nigeria. All because one woman, motivated by her faith in God and love of life, spoke up against the encroaching culture of death. Also on today’s show, we look at some of the writings of St Margaret Mary about the Sacred Heart of Jesus during this month that celebrates that devotion.
