Bitcoin is down 50% from its highs — but Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan says the price is the least important thing happening in crypto right now.In this episode of Raise Your Average, hosts Pierre Daillie and Mike Philbrick sit down with Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise Asset Management, to make sense of the 2026 crypto winter. Hougan argues this is "the best winter ever" for crypto: prices are down, but the fundamentals, regulatory clarity, and institutional infrastructure are stronger than in any prior cycle. The conversation moves from Bitcoin's role as scarce, digital hard money to the quieter, faster-moving story underneath it: stablecoins and tokenization rebuilding the plumbing of global finance. Hougan walks through why the "neutral" Bitcoin allocation isn't zero, why advisors and institutions get stuck at the finish line even after months of due diligence, and how blockchain rails already move money and assets faster and cheaper than traditional banking. The episode closes with a deep dive into agentic AI, exploring how autonomous AI agents transacting 24/7 could become the largest driver of blockchain activity yet, and what that means for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Chainlink, and Bittensor. Bitcast is disrupting the world of influencer marketing in a huge way. We interview the founder of subnet 93 to find out how they proved the success of their model within Bittensor, their plans for expansion to Hyperliquid and other ecosystems, and their revenue and profitability trajectory.
We unveil a secret hack within the Bittensor TAO ecosystem that they do not want you to know. Whales and smart money already know this and are using it to their advantage, but today we shine light on something every investor needs to know. When the goal is to stack as much TAO as possible, this is essential information.
Training a frontier AI model today requires hundreds of thousands of GPUs, months of compute time, and a budget that only a handful of companies on earth can afford. Steffen Cruz, co-founder and CTO of Macrocosmos, thinks that model is about to break, and he's spending his time building what comes next. His project IOTA, operating within the BitTensor blockchain ecosystem, uses distributed training to split large language models across thousands of devices located around the world, coordinated by blockchain, and powered by surplus cheap energy wherever it exists. After nine months of research, the system can reproduce baseline benchmark performance using what Cruz calls "wonky vegetables" - unreliable, churning, globally distributed compute - and turn it into something indistinguishable from centralized training if you use the right approach. The conversation with Craig Smith covers the mechanics of how this actually works, why the blockchain's role is far narrower and more practical than most people assume, and why the Mac mini stockpiling trend creates an unexpected supply of distributed compute that can earn passive income when idle. Cruz's target: a 70 billion parameter model by mid-2025, trained at 10-20% of what it would cost through a hyperscaler, and aimed squarely at the legal firms, hospitals, and cash-strapped startups that have been waiting to train their own sovereign models but couldn't afford the price tag. In this episode, Lex chats with Evan Malanga — Chief Revenue Officer of Yuma, a subsidiary of Digital Currency Group focused on growing the Bittensor ecosystem. They discuss how Bittensor's $6 billion protocol incentivises AI builders worldwide through token emissions across 128 competing subnets, and why the network has produced real commercial outputs — including a 72 billion parameter model trained on-chain and a coding agent rivalling Claude at a fraction of the cost. Evan explains Yuma's role as the institutional gateway to Bittensor through its validator, accelerator, and asset management products, and they explore why the concentration of AI in OpenAI and Anthropic is a systemic risk, and whether Bittensor's future extends beyond AI into a broader coordination engine for decentralised work. NOTABLE DISCUSSION POINTS: Bittensor has crossed from experimentation into shipping benchmark-competitive work at a fraction of centralized cost. Three recent proof points: Templar (subnet 3) completed the largest decentralized pre-training run of a 72B parameter model using only the network's token incentives. Ridges, an AI agent platform, is hitting 88–90% on software engineering benchmarks, on par with Claude-class agents at ~5x cheaper, built by a 3-to-5-person team under $10M of token emissions. Score (subnet 44) is doing computer vision 200x faster than centralized counterparts. Small distributed teams are producing outputs competitive with frontier labs without raising venture capital or hiring staff. Dynamic TAO restructured emissions from validator-curated to market-curated, making each subnet its own tradeable asset. Previously, dominant validators assigned weights that determined how the 7,200 daily TAO emission flowed across subnets. Under Dynamic TAO, each of the 128 subnets has its own token denominated in TAO, and any holder can buy or sell into specific subnets, pricing them like a market rather than a committee vote. Subnet owners, miners, and validators earn fees in the respective subnet token. Distribution has settled into a power law: the top ten subnets hold ~80% of market cap. This is the move that turned Bittensor from “decentralized AI protocol” into a financial hyperstructure with hundreds of tokenized work markets layered on top. The economics for subnet owners are genuinely unusual — hundreds of millions in annual incentives, fully subsidized labor, no fundraising. A subnet owner gets access to up to ~256 miners globally competing to satisfy their problem statement, with miner compensation paid by protocol emissions rather than the subnet owner. At current TAO prices, annual incentives across the network run into hundreds of millions; at higher prices, this approaches $1B/year up for grabs. No hiring, no benefits, no recruiting, the network runs as a continuous adversarial competition where validators rank miner outputs. This is the mechanical answer to “why would an AI researcher choose Bittensor over Silicon Valley”, and explains why researchers at Meta and Google reportedly mine Bittensor on nights and weekends, with top miners on subnets like Ridges earning ~$30,000/day. Everyone in the Bittensor community is familiar with blue chip subnets like Chutes, Targon, and Score. But the real value is in finding the next leader before the rest of the market catches on. In today's episode, we speak to the founder of Handshake (SN58) to learn why they could become the front-door to everything TAO.

What if you could train a frontier AI model without building a single data centre? In this episode of Eye on AI, Craig Smith sits down with Steffen Cruz, co-founder and CTO of Macrocosmos, to explore a radical alternative to the way AI models are built today. Instead of billion-dollar GPU warehouses, Steffen is training large language models using idle compute from devices distributed around the world, coordinated through the Bittensor blockchain. Steffen breaks down why the centralised data centre model is heading toward a wall. Projects like Stargate and Colossus cost tens of billions of dollars, and as appetite for larger models grows, the economics simply stop making sense. He explains how distributed training flips this on its head, tapping into surplus energy, underutilised GPUs, and even consumer devices like Mac Minis to train models at a fraction of the cost. We also get into IOTA, Macrocosmos's flagship technology, an orchestration layer that takes compute nodes scattered across the globe and makes them act like a single supercomputer. No single device runs the full model. Instead, each one carries a small slice, a technique called model parallelism, and together they can train frontier-scale models that would otherwise be out of reach for startups, researchers, and enterprises. Finally, Steffen shares what he's building toward: 70 billion parameter models trained at 10 to 20 percent of centralised costs, a two-sided marketplace for compute, and a future where anyone with a spare GPU or Mac Mini can earn passive income while contributing to the democratisation of AI. We unpack why oil remains the key macro lens for understanding markets as renewed Iran diplomacy, elevated crude prices, stronger labor data, and sticky inflation risks continue to shape the Fed backdrop and broader risk sentiment. We discuss why Bitcoin has remained relatively resilient in this environment and how we are thinking about the market in a headline-driven regime where tactical levels matter more than long-term conviction. We also break down why Strategy's bitcoin purchases may still matter even if they look small in aggregated flow data, particularly through momentum, liquidity, and float absorption. Finally, we explore why Hyperliquid continues to strengthen its case as a weekend macro price discovery venue through oil and precious metals perps, and why Covenant's exit from Bittensor has become a real near-term sentiment hit for TAO without necessarily invalidating the broader decentralized AI thesis.Main sections (00:41 - 07:43) The macro setup (07:43 - 16:18) Bitcoin, oil, and market structure (16:25 - 27:01) Strategy's bitcoin buying & implications (27:01 - 29:35) Hyperliquid's competitive edge (29:35 - 33:06) Bittensor and Covenant's exit Speakers David Duong, CFA - Global Head of Investment Research (X: https://x.com/DavidDuong) Colin Basco - Research Associate (X: https://x.com/colin_basco) Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. This episode covers THORChain latest developments, including Monero and Bittensor integration, AI in blockchain, rapid swaps update, POL, and ADR23. Swap now on THORChain https://swap.thorchain.org/ without KYC or limits! TL;DR Monero ($XMR) is targeting mainnet in 1-2 months. Boone's chain client PR passed simulation tests. Chad is reviewing the codebase and expects it merged in ~2 weeks, with stagenet/chaosnet testing to follow. Bittensor ($TAO) is being developed in parallel, with Chad aiming to ship both $XMR and $TAO on mainnet around the same time. Zcash ($ZEC) is targeting mainnet by end of April, with StarSquid leading the implementation. Rapid swaps hit a $1.6M single swap and are now approaching 50% of total THORChain volume. Protocol-Owned Liquidity (POL) is shipping in release 3.18, with an algorithmic system to deploy system income into the pools that need it most. You can find Rayyyk's full write-up on blog: https://blog.thorchain.org/xmr-is-coming-monero-on-thorchain-in-1-2-months/ THORChain is a decentralized cross-chain liquidity protocol that lets users swap assets directly between blockchains without wrapping or using centralized exchanges. Its app layer ecosystem means developers can build decentralized apps that tap directly into liquidity across chains. Unlike most platforms, it offers real ownership of your assets, deep liquidity, and fast swaps in one seamless network. Bittensor drama from a key developer exit added sector-specific pressure. Regulatory updates included Treasury's dual-tier stablecoin rules and ongoing SEC proposals under review. Strong recent Bitcoin ETF inflows and Strategy's continued buying provided support amid institutional resilience—focus remains on CPI reaction, geopolitical truce durability, and potential volatility expansion. In the case of Metanova, Bitcast, and Score, the answer is Bittensor. Yes, each of the three companies leverages the Bittensor network to get more work done, more quickly, in a completely decentralized fashion.Metanova uses its subnet to run developer competitions to find exciting molecular candidates, parsing through a mountain of possibilities to pluck out the most promising for further investigation.Bitcast uses its subnet to collect visibility demand from brands, which is served by video creators. The company is focused on the crypto niche to start, but will expand in time to other technology topics.Score uses its subnet to generate highly performant, specialized vision models, which it then sells to customers through a platform (Manako). In each case, the Bittensor's economic engine unlocks global creativity to tackle tasks that were previously time-consuming, fragmented, or expensive to complete. Let's see how quickly each company can scale and whether startups building on Bittensor can grow faster than their non-decentralized peers.Timestamps:0:00 Intro2:19 Plaud: If your work depends on conversations — interviews, meetings, calls — you need a Plaud NotePin.
