Josh was under the weather, so we were lucky enough to snag Noted TTRPG Attorney Noah Downs, Esq., to come and talk about and offer his on-the-ground perspective about the tumultuous last 12 months in Dungeons & Dragons and the tabletop gaming space overall. Do you think Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro has recovered from the PR nightmare that was the Open Gaming License controversy? I'd argue that even with last month's layoffs, D&D is far stronger now and better positioned to thrive than it was this time last year. Check below for all the topics we discussed. The OGL Controversy One Year Later Despite the body blow to the company, is Wizards of the Coast actually *better off* now than they were a year ago? WotC juking everyone with Creative Commons D&D's 5.1 SRD going into Creative Commons wasn't at the top of anyone's list of probabilities when everything with OGL started. Third Parties' Plans Foiled Third-party publishers clearly planned for a different outcome when they started announcing their upcoming D&D alternatives. But, once WotC went with Creative Commons, it seems like they scrambled to still move forward without losing face even though their original motivation was less and less relevant. One D&D (Can we even call it that anymore)? Call it One D&D, call it 6.0. Whatever it is, it's coming, and it remains to be seen if it's going to be "iterative" like was originally announced or an entirely new ruleset. You would think that releasing the 5.1 SRD into Creative Commons would incentivize them to release a whole new ruleset. Wasn't there a D&D movie? Yes, and it bombed. We talk about why. WotC's Book Price Bloat Sure there's inflation and things generally cost more, but what extra value are you getting for the additional cost of these books? Planescape returns… is it worth it? Rerelease, remix, or return to get your money back? Does the new 5E Planescape justify its existence? Ernie Gygax and Justin La Nasa's NuTSR files Chapter 7 Uninclusive company with a racist and transphobic product continues to have problems and files for bankruptcy after ing around and finding out. Weird D&D channel What's the deal with that D&D free ad-supported television channel? Who asked for this? More importantly, who's paying for it? AI's influence on content creation AI has 100% affected every corner of content creation in the last year and WotC wasn't safe, either. We talk about the real AI art scandal and the smaller, made-up one that came at the end of the year. Hasbro Employee SPILLS THE TEA on Wizards of the Coast Layoffs!

Clownfish TV: Audio Edition

Hasbro axed over 1,000 employees before Christmas, including many key Wizards of the Coast employees. Now a former WotC employee is spilling the tea on what went down and what the current mindset of WotC is in relationship to Magic the Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons. Additional Context: The recent layoffs at Hasbro, which have significantly impacted its subsidiary Wizards of the Coast, have been a source of considerable concern and surprise in the gaming industry. Despite Wizards of the Coast's strong performance, particularly in its digital gaming segment and with franchises like Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) and Magic: The Gathering (MTG), they have not been immune to these cuts. Wizards of the Coast's revenue had been on the rise, especially with the success of projects like "Baldur's Gate 3", contributing to a 40% increase in year-on-year revenue. However, despite this success, Hasbro's overall financial health has been less robust, with falling total revenue and share prices, primarily due to challenges in the toy sector. This situation has led Hasbro to undertake layoffs as part of a broader strategy to address these market "headwinds". The layoffs at Wizards of the Coast are part of Hasbro's plan to lay off 1,100 employees, which represents a significant portion of its workforce. The decision has been met with criticism, especially considering the success of Wizards of the Coast's franchises. The layoffs could potentially lead to a 'brain drain' where talented individuals from Wizards may move to other companies in the industry. This situation is exacerbated by controversies like the attempted revocation of the Open Gaming License, which had a significant backlash in the tabletop gaming community. Notably, Paizo Publishing, which produces the Pathfinder series and is a competitor to D&D, has capitalized on the situation by positioning itself as a more appealing alternative to Wizards of the Coast for both players and professionals. With Paizo's workforce unionizing and the introduction of the Open RPG Creative License (ORC), there's potential for talent from Wizards of the Coast to migrate to Paizo or other independent studios. The layoffs have affected key personnel in the D&D and MTG teams, including senior development editors, art directors, game designers, and communications managers. This loss of talent could impact upcoming projects and the overall operation of Wizards of the Coast. As Wizards of the Coast prepares for D&D's 50th anniversary in 2024, with several new projects planned, these layoffs have raised concerns about the future direction and success of their beloved franchises. It's a news roundup this week on the Goblins and Growlers Podcast! We've got a few nuggets from Wizards of the Coast (including that Pinkerton situation with the pre-release Magic: The Gathering Cards) and a Pathfinder update along with some interesting news from smaller and indie publishers, including a fantastic Kickstarter for a fishing “DLC” for your 5e game. Also! We have a big Spring Sale going on at our Big Cartel store! Most things are 10 percent off and you can use the code "GRAVYBOAT" for free shipping in the continental U.S. We're trying to make some space to order new merch for the convention season that begins in the fall, so help us thin things out by grabbing some of our shirt designs before we finally retire them. We love taking a setting, especially something in the public domain, and creating a game world around them. We discuss what game worlds we'd want to create and play in. What about you? Pathfinder 2E is getting a remaster. What does that mean and what changes players can expect? They're condensing some materials and eliminating the last vestiges of the Open Gaming License from their books in favor of their home-grown ORC License – the fallout from January continues!  We also touch on the new D&D Playtest materials, including the Barbarian, Fighter, Sorcerer (no more bloodlines), Warlock, and Wizard (with simplified subclass names such as "Evoker" instead of "School of Evocation"). All materials are free on the D&D Unearthed Arcana page, and public comment is open until May 17th. Wizards of the Coast sent Pinkerton agents to retrieve prerelease merch from YouTuber Dan "oldschoolmtg" Cannon, who accidentally acquired March of the Machine: Aftermath boxes over a month and a half before retail street date. The Pinkerton Detective Agency was hired to retrieve the allegedly stolen goods, and somewhere between $2,200-$4,400 worth of cards were confiscated. There's a lot of drama and confusion over what actually happened here. Modiphius, probably most well-known for having the license to “Star Trek” and “Dune” RPGs, is releasing a new "original" setting called “Dreams and Machines.” Set on the planet of Evera Prime, which is cut-off from Earth, players attempt to rebuild the human colonies after they were devastated by deadly mechs called Wakers. Using scraps from the advanced technology left by the Wakers, humans have developed their own cultures and factions, such as the Archivists, Dreamers, and Spears. We talk a little about how, for an original setting, it sure feels a lot like a loose adaptation of the Butlerian Jihad from “Dune.” Lastly, we have a Kickstarter for a 5e fishing "DLC" called "Why Slay Dragons: When You Could Be Fishing." This super-detailed and cool game already has a 35-page sample available on the Kickstarter page and was funded in just 5 minutes. Currently, it's 10x its original funding amount, so this game is coming out with quite a few stretch goal goodies. It looks like so much fun – check it out. Finally – again – don't forget to check out the Spring Sale on the Big Cartel store, where most things are 10 percent off. Use code "GRAVYBOAT" for free shipping and grab some shirt designs before they're gone forever, and load up on some awesome indie RPGs from their friend Cezar Capacle. Catch you all next episode! Episode Introduction Important stuff happening once again! Thanks to intense community backlash, Wizards of the Coast has changed their mind about creating a new, uber-draconian Open Gaming License designed to take the money of the hard-working third-party publishers who've been popularizing D&D since Fifth Edition came out. They've gone a step further than a lot of us were expecting by releasing the 5E system reference document into Creative Commons, which makes it, essentially, public domain and irrevocable. Josh and Brandon get together on another Saturday afternoon to discuss this late-breaking news. Has this been enough for you to stick with Wizards and D&D or are they going to take a while to earn back your trust? Whichever way you're leaning, this is a great time to broaden your horizons by exploring other systems. Hit us up at contact@goblinsandgrowlers.com or on Twitter to tell us where you've landed. The battle over voting rights has not let up. Republicans in several key states have kept up their agenda to restrict access to voting.  New Zealand's prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, announced that she'll step down in a few weeks.  A new Pew Research Center survey found that only about half of Americans think that colleges and universities are “having a positive effect on the way things are going in the country these days. About 38% say they are having a negative effect. And, as I bet you are already thinking, yes, there is a big partisan divide on the issue.  Florida is banning a new Advanced Placement test on African American Studies that was to be offered in its high schools. The Florida Department of Education said “the content of this course is inexplicitly contrary to Florida law and significantly lacks educational value. That law is the new law passed last year and signed by Gov. DeSantis restricting discussions of racism in schools.  Anti-Abortion activists gather in DC to demand a federal ban on abortion.  Google announced layoffs of about 12,000 workers, which amounts to about 6% of its total, global workforce.  Josh Shapiro sworn in as Pennsylvania's 48th governor.  In one of his first acts in office, Shapiro removed the college degree requirement for most government jobs in the Commonwealth. That means about 65,000 jobs will not be open to people regardless of if they went to college.  Wizards of the Coast (owned by Hasbro) is in hot water with the Dungeons and Dragons community over attempts to roll back its Open Gaming License or OGL. Now gaming companies like Kobold Press, are looking to launch new Tabletop Roleplaying Gaming systems that will remain open access. Wizards of the Coast finally relented to community pressure. But damage is done.

The day after we recorded this Wizards put out a statement walking back a ton of the things from the original OGL "leak." The statement was a lot of CYA, but it was worth us updating things. At the beginning of this episode, there's an update segment where Josh and Brandon talk about their release and what it means going forward. This week on waypoint! Rob's back and better than ever (for now), and so of course we get to hear about how much COVID sucks. Speaking of things sucking, Ren leads us on a look at Wizards of the Coast updating their Open Gaming License, the agreement that allowed games like Pathfinder to exist when D&D 4th edition shit the bed, which Wizards is basically threatening to undo in a 1.1 update. Patrick got early access to the first episode of HBO's The Last of Us, and has the scoop on how the already "cinematic" game translates to the small screen. Then we dive into the question bucket to discuss eating pizza off a plate. Like while it's still on there. Like just chomping down on the pizza while it's still on the plate.26:34 Wizards Updates the OGL, 57:28 Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous, 01:11:27 The Last of Us TV, 1:33:53 God of War Ragnarok, 1:38:20 The Question Bucket Hosted on Acast.
