I need to add a note to this episode before it begins. I had emailed Mel a few weeks ago for a follow up and didn't get a reply, but I know she's a busy lady and didn't think much about it. Then today I received a note from Carolina that she had also reached out to Mel several times with no response. So Carolina did more digging and found Mel Shields obituary. Mel passed away on April 5th, 2025. Only five days after this interview was recorded. This was quite a shock to us. But I can't imagine the shock it must be to her dear husband, Paul. Paul, I want to extend my heartfelt sympathy. It was a privilege to know Mel through our quilting group. She will be greatly missed. And I want to let you know that you and your family are in our prayers. It was an honor to record Mel's story. And Paul, I hope being able to hear her voice in this interview will give you comfort. Mel Shields just has a few rules you need to follow when you're at The Quilting Room with Mel. There are no quilting police, you make your quilts the way you want to and if you are happy with the results, so is she. Everyone is welcome in her quilting room and last but not least enjoy your sewing machines the way you want to. These rules become very clear as we get to chat with Mel you'll hear her deep love for quilting and sewing machines. Here's Mel's No Y-Seam LeMoyne Star Obituary for Melissa Dawn Shields September 28, 1979 - April 5, 2025 Quenemo - Melissa Dawn Shields, 45, passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Advent Health in Ottawa, Kansas. Interview with Kevin Shields Of Detention. Detention was one of the first and best bands of the ‘80s New Jersey hardcore punk explosion. Their wonderfully tasteless “Dead Rock 'n Rollers” single became the college radio cult classic of 1983. The song's 97 seconds of primal Ramones-style speed-punk mocked the demise of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, John Lennon, Keith Moon, Elvis Presley, Jim Morrison, Sid Vicious, John Belushi, and John Bonham — who “played the drug game and couldn't maintain.” They even foretold the drug-related heart attack of Jim Carroll, famous for “All The People Who Died,” screaming, “What are you waiting for? Do it!” Saving the best for last, “Dead Rock 'n Rollers” raised the obvious question: “Why couldn't it be Barry Manilow?” The Detention story goes back to Central Jersey, to the Shields family home in Hillsborough Township, about 20 minutes from the “culture capital” of New Brunswick. Kevin Shields, the fourth of five sons, grew up listening to his older brothers' sophisticated record collection of hippie music that ranged from Blue Cheer to King Crimson. Kevin recalls: “Early on, I knew that rock ‘n roll was something special. I was fascinated.” “I enlisted in the Coast Guard when I was 17. I was out on my own. I was always a music guy and realized music was getting stale with Genesis and whatnot. I read all the magazines, and the ads in the back, so I sent money to these labels, and came home with albums like Never Mind the Bollocks and Rocket to Russia, and singles by the Slickee Boys and MX-80 Sound. But the coup d'grace was when we stationed in Alameda and I went wild in San Francisco. I went to the Mabuhay Gardens like three nights a week, seeing all the legendary West Coast bands: DKs, DOA, Black Flag. I got thrashed on the education of seeing live bands.” When Kevin returned home in 1981, he was inspired to make music. “Detention came about because I decided to be a player not a spectator,” he explains. “The easiest way was to recruit my family, so I turned to my brothers. I bought a bass, but I didn't know how to play it. My brother Paul suggested I get in touch with this guitarist Rodney Matejek. He showed me how to play simply, and within months we started coming up with riffs, and what would become songs came very quickly.” The band — Kevin, Rodney, frontman Paul Shields, and drummer Daniel Shields — played their first show at Raritan Manor on the Somerville Circle, hosted by a young Matt Pinfield in his first radio DJ gig at WRSU (Rutgers). It was a noisy and chaotic affair, with people rolling on the floor — until police arrived and stopped the mayhem. “We were given 100 bucks, and we promised never to play there again,” Kevin says with a grin. Kevin offers some backstory: “Rob Roth, god bless his pointed head, he had a vision. He got us into the studio in Roselle Park, and he paid for it. All we had to do was get good recordings of the two songs, including the B-side “El Salvador.” It came out great. My brother Paul certainly had the lungs for the job! Those 500 copies got us gigs and got us a lot of notice.” In 1985, Detention released a self-produced self-titled album before disbanding. Paul Shields is a therapist who specialises in cognitive behavioural therapy whom I started working with last year to try get over my childhood trauma and anxiety/attachment issues by far my most requested guest since I've spoke about him so much. We get in to some pretty tricky topics including - Do ssri's/anti depressants work and Pauls overview of them - Why are mental health issue's continuing to rise - Why is nobody talking about womans depression rates as they're actually really high too - Why therapists need to stop pushing positive happy self talk as it makes them unrelatable - Why the governments policies and refusal to do anything about the levels of poverty are ultimately what is going to stop mental health issue's from falling Is it a problem with Westminister and the conservatives.. would labour be any better? Would any party make any difference? This was a more serious conversation than I anticipated having but considering Paul is one of the smartest people I know when it comes to how we think even if you don't agree with him I think you'll enjoy hearing my therapist talk openly about depression, anxiety, mental health disorders, treatments like CBT and everything mental health. Paul chats to me about moving about as a kid, living in Belfast and growing up loving football and Man United. Discovering rugby was next and that lit a fire in Paul that would take him to international rugby and a move abroad to Northampton Saints. Unfortunately his paying days ended prematurely at Northampton but their was an off field role that suited him really well and he's not looked back. Some story and career.

My next guest is Ulster, Ireland and Northampton hooker Paul Shields. Ulster fans will remember Paul well. He got over 100 caps for Ulster and won the Celtic league before moving on to Northampton where he finished his playing career. This is a special podcast for me because Paul was my favourite Ulster player growing up! It was great to meet a childhood hero and he didn't disappoint - really nice guy and great chat. Hope you enjoy listening!

This week my guest is Paul Shields. A Stanford student, therapist, podcast producer, podcast host and previously gigging rock and roll artist. ** Explicit Language and Topics Used** This podcast is an account of growing up in the roughest part of Glasgow. During the 80s and 90s Paul was surrounded by working class culture, violence, drugs, mental health struggles and poverty. We speak about about how that shaped Paul and how he pulled strength from these circumstances but also the counterbalancing effects it had on him him later in life. Learn how the fear from his Dad mustered aggression in him and how he became hyper normalised to violence through gang fights and scheme wars. Paul discovered drugs, guitar and his creative side which let him to parking his academic career for a decade. He toured the country playing in the some of the most renown stages in the UK supporting some of the craziest bands. Paul uncovers the reality of being a touring musician but also how his earlier childhood dictated his persona in the band - a persona he had to unwind later in therapy. Paul lost his dad at 21. Learn about the promise Paul made to his dad to continue playing and pursuing music and how this led him to gigging in the same same week as as his Dad's funeral. Paul then struggled with a porn addiction that led to erectile dysfunction at an alarmingly young age. Paul sought help from a therapist who unlocked in him the power of self-help through the works of world renown therapist David Burns. Paul has went on to study to become a therapist over a decade after initially joining university and has become a practitioner in Glasgow whilst running a successful podcast studio. I am so excited to share this episode with Amy. Amy is an inspirational, kind, and thoughtful young woman and I am so happy she wanted to share some of her story on the podcast. In this conversation, Amy shared her experiences of living with autism and we discuss the misconception around autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Amy shares her life-changing experiences of grief and loss, we explore mental health and mental illness, bullying, coping mechanisms and tips for stress management, sleeping patterns, body image, the impact of creativity and writing on Amy's mental health and so much more. Amy also shared a wonderful analogy about autism and the way she thinks her brain works and the differences we have in relation to what our strengths and weakness are. This is around the second half of our conversation, and it includes open and closed doors, I won't spoil it anymore but it is wonderful!!Amy is really keen to share her experiences to support and help anyone else who has gone through similar struggles. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did.Thank you so much Paul Shields for editing and producing this episode and Vilius Kateiva for adding the music and intro #techgenuis'sMusic played: Stephen Wake, The Old Copperplate

In this episode, we talked about everything from creativity and mental health to the feeling of inner peace and joy that comes from climbing a mountain- how there are almost two versions of Scotland- the incredible highlands and grey, dark council estate vibe we both grew up around and that Graeme artfully outlines in the young team... We also talked about hope, and the impact of having someone who believes in you, even when you don't believe in yourself. -Such a wonderful conversation, thank you so much to Graeme for sharing his time and for reading two wonderful passages from the book- I have never attended a live book reading, however, I am so glad reading has become such a big part of my life... and I think the young team bridges that gap- it is such a great read for people who enjoy reading but also people who have not picked up a book since school...Graeme's book- The Young Team (really amazing read- can't recommend it enough)other great conversations with Graeme:1. Dr. Bradley Bale has been on the cutting edge of heart health for decades. I'm excited to talk with him because this is such an important topic for new and established dentists. There is evidence that oral health, heart health, and overall health are not only related, but can be used as tools for diagnosis and treatment. Dentists are in a unique position to be at the front lines of patient health, and Dr. Bradley Bale is here to break it down for us. Dr. Bale is a medical doctor and he and Dr. Amy Doneen are the founders of https://baledoneen.com/ (The BaleDoneen Method). They are also co-authors of https://www.amazon.com/Beat-Heart-Attack-Gene-Revolutionary/dp/1681620227 (Beat the Heart Attack Gene). What is so exciting is that there is solid scientific evidence that shows that oral health is a sign of heart health, brain health, and more. This information can also be used to educate your patients and team about the important work you are doing by saving lives through early detection of disease. Treatment can prevent the occurence of heart attack, stroke and more. Dr. Bale shares how he got involved in this field and how important it is for him to help his patients by saving lives. He also shares an exciting new program that he's introduced to help all of us assess our arterial health, because heart attacks and strokes are preventable. Show Notes [02:20] Dr. Bradley Bale is a medical doctor. When he was in family practice, he would see his patients have strokes and heart attacks. [03:10] Dr. Bale knew Dr. Paul Shields who had one of the first pieces of equipment that could identify coronary calcification. It was called electron beam tomography. [03:39] Dr. Bale used CT scans to look for signs of disease in his patients. Dr. Shields recommended treating calcification before a heart attack. [04:01] The patients who took the test and received the treatment didn't have heart attacks and strokes. The thought of inflammation being the cause of heart attacks was just beginning to evolve in the early 1990s. [04:51] He started working with Dr. Amy Doneen around the year 2000. Dr. Doneen did her thesis paper on Dr. Bale's coronary data. [05:37] Dr. Bale and Dr. Doneen wrote the book https://www.amazon.com/Beat-Heart-Attack-Gene-Revolutionary/dp/1681620227 (Beat the Heart Attack Gene). [05:57] The book has become a national bestseller. It's focuses on the heart attack and stroke prevention care that Dr. Bale and Dr. Doneen give. It also has a section that focuses on oral health. [06:23] They have a new book coming out at the end of this year. It's about how their care reaches way beyond preventing heart attacks and strokes. Their patients also have an extremely low risk of dementia, Alzheimer's, heart failure, kidney failure, and ED. [08:15] There is a recent correlation with Alzheimers and gingivitis. If you want to have good health, it starts with a healthy mouth. [09:18] Dr. Bale's grandfather was a dentist and his oldest son is an oral surgeon. There's a ton of evidence between the health of gums and teeth and risk for heart attack and stroke. [10:17] They now have evidence that show that high-risk periodontal pathogens are actually a cause of heart disease. [11:23] Living at a low altitude was one of the number one ranked reasons for being at risk for heart disease. Number two is oral health. [12:41] Number three was skipping breakfast, and number four was having more than two to three drinks a day. [14:04] Dr. Bale shares a story about a patient who had disease in his arteries and high inflammatory markers. Without seeing the patient, Dr. Bale knew he had an infected tooth. It turned out Dr. Bale was right. After dental treatment, his markers dropped down to almost normal. [19:10] Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death and disability. It's also occurring in younger people. It's critical to maintain the wellness of the gums and teeth. [19:56] Dentists need to educate...

When should you start to worry about your porn usage? Mandy Rose Jones is a blogger and founder of The Empowered Woman Project. In this episode of Original Pilot Material, she chats to podcaster Paul Shields about an issue that eventually took grip on his whole life: pornography addiction. Paul talks candidly about his experience, the effect it had on his mental health and how it eventually led to the end of a relationship. Paul Shields is one half of the Rebel City Podcast based in Glasgow on which they recently had Scottish politician Mhairi Black on as a guest. This was a long episode! The title doesn't do any justice to the number of subjects we talked about while at the same time staying away from the usual conspiracy theories, Sit back, relax and strap in for a great show!
